DBMS Independent universe

Is it possible to create a universe (and a corresponding set of standard reports) that is not dependent on the DBMS used for storing the data - obviously ensuring that the structure of the tables are the same?
Are there any best practices to follow in this case?
The moment one starts using certain database functions (e.g. sysdate vs getdate()) in report definitions, it ties the definition to the specific database type

Hi Henk,
Yes there is a way. You can do a lot of off-line development whilst not connected to the RDMS.
One way of doing this is to create you tables structures by means of rows and columns in MS Access or even Excel. Create an ODBC connection to either of these.
Create a connection in the universe using Generic - Generic ODBC. Import the tables or sheets and the SQL generated is much the same... with exception of the RDMS specific functions you mentioned.
And you should be able to have a univerise and a set of reports.
Hope this helps

In 3.0, Could WEBI reports directly based on EXCEL file be refreshed, after exporting to BOE platform?
I've made a test on that and find out WEBI report could not be freshed in Infoview while DESKI report could.
Some colleague suggest me to build the WEBI report based on a Universe created based on the EXCEL file.
I want to confirm, is it a by-design that we could only refresh WEBI report based on universe? or I could do some setting to made the refreshment of WEBI based directly on EXCEL file works?
    Please Help!! Thanks a lot~~~

    Hi Rachel,
You could try the Rich Client Product Guide [http://help.sap.com/businessobject/product_guides/boexir3/en/xi3_web_intelligence_rich_client_en.pdf] but I don't think it is a problem...more like a feature by design - it makes sense.
You could try the route of creating a universe on top of excel... See posts

  • ITunes could not connect to the iTunes Store "Error Message"

I recently added iTunes 7.6 to my Windows XP operating system at the same time when I added an *Ion USB Turntable (TTUSB).* I currently have the 80G iPod with the larger video screen. I added in the supplied software of the EZ Vinyl Converter. The software reads from Gracenote and imports into iTunes okay. But now my PC cannot access the iTunes store to buy songs, read the tracks on the discs, or display new album artwork. The diagnostic read the network connectivety test, the CD/DVD drive, and iPod connectivity tests all read okay. I followed the directions on checking the network settings under the Internet Options Tool "Connections" Lan Settings and the Automatic detection and still no dice. All I get is "Make sure your network is active."
    Can anybody help out their?

I'm seeing this error on some, but not all, of my Windows XP machines. On my personal development XP box, I see this error if iTunes is closed when I try and access iTunes U via my transfer script or Stanford's.
"iTunes could not connect to the Music Store. The network connection was terminated unexpectedly. Make sure your network connection is active and try again."
The errors occured in IE 7 Beta, Firefox 1.5.x, and Firefox 2 Beta. In each case, iTunes U loaded after I clicked the 'ok' button in iTunes. I did notice that in Firefox's case an additional pop-up window appeared that asked whether or not I had iTunes; when I selected that I do have itunes, it transfered me to iTunes but generated the error.
After getting these errors on my Windows XP machine, I tried it on two different lab machines running Windows XP, and didn't get the error message once -- I tried it in IE 6, Firefox 1.0.x and Firefox 1.5.x and they all worked. It even worked with IE 7 Beta and Vista Beta.
Based on this, I think the problem must lie in how Windows registered iTunes, and the handshake just isn't happening properly.

  • ITunes 7.1.1 won't recognize iPod and gets stuck.  Help needed!

Since I updated to version 7.1.1, iTunes does not recognize my iPod (a 15GB Model M9460LL). I can work with iTunes before I connect the iPod, but when I do connect it, iTunes freezes up: the beach ball spins endlessly, and the iPod screen stays on "do not disconnect." I can't eject the iPod (it shows up on Finder but not on iTunes), nor force quit the application or the machine. I have to turn the machine off with the on/off button, then unplug the iPod even though its screen says "do not disconnect" (no apparent adverse effects from this, so far).
In all this, I don't get any error messages.
I thought the problem might be with some podcasts. I deleted most of them and set the podcast settings to "update manually."
I had been having some intermittent problems before this upgrade, but nothing like this.
    Any advice?

    Exactly the same thing here...
Brand new iPod U2 version, it is no longer recognized by iTunes 7, (the hard drive is mounted in the Windows Explorer)
When on one time (of many) it was recognized, I tried the 1.2 firmware update... took hours, never completed...
Even tried on another system with a fresh XP/itunes 7 installation, exactly the same symptoms as in my work laptop.
The ipod diagnostics says: Ipod connection failed:

  • Ipod Not Recognized After iTunes 7.0 Upgrade

    Hello
My 5th generation iPod was synching just fine with iTunes 6.0.5. Then, I upgraded to 7.0 and it's no longer recognized, though Windows sees the device just fine. I followed the troubleshooting steps at article 93716 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716), to no avail. I uninstalled and reinstalled. No luck. What a mistake, and my 90 of "complimentary" support ended a couple days ago.
I have a reasonably powerful system with adequate resources (1 GB RAM, 2.53 GHz, 120 GB storage - 50% free) and very few other services being loaded - only the basics. I installed with Antivirus, Firewall, Antispyware off.
So now I only have two choices - restore an earlier disk image backup, or reinstall from the original disk.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks!

I ran it twice for you. First result is after rebooting the computer with the iPod plugged in.

  • IPod in Recovery Mode? New iTunes has made my iPods useless.

I did a search and found others with the same problem, but no solutions. With iTunes (downloaded yesterday) neither of my iPods will work. I have a 30gb Video iPod and a third generation 20gb iPod. Both worked fine before I upgraded, now neither will work with iTunes on my work PC.
I have tried the "5 Rs" and it did nothing but wipe all the data off my video iPod I've uninstalled iTunes, deleted all associated folders, and deleted all registery entries that reference iTunes or iPod; I must have missed something though, because when I reinstall iTunes, it somehow still has all my library data grrr.
    Any thoughts?
I happened to have just built a new PC at home (different from the one I'm having the problems on) and with a fresh OS and file system, the iPods work with the new iTunes, but not on my older work PC. Obviously I'm missing some file that needs to be deleted, otherwise the library info would be gone and I'd have to add files to my iTunes again, but I'll be damned if I can find the file.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is my iPod Diagnostic info from my 20gb 3rd generation iPod:

I had the same problem when connecting my 60GB iPod with iTunes 7, but I could get through it.
I cannot explain precisely what the cause was, however this is what I did:
    1) uninstall iTunes 7 from Control Panel, then reboot;
    2) connected iPod to PC without iTunes (mainly because I had all my summer pictures stored in it and wanted to copy them in a safer place, which I succeded at)
    3) disconnected iPod from PC (with Safely Remove HW)
    4) installed again iTunes 6.x (found link to download setup.exe in one post in this forum)
    5) connected iPod: everything ok
    6) installed iTunes 7 with iPod connected (but iTunes 6 obviously closed): after installation it prompted that iPod needed to have SW upgraded to 1.2, which it did in the usual way
(actually, I had no intention to install iTunes 7 again, but some podcasts I had found in the Store did not sync "because iPod SW is too old")
    Hope this helps.

  • 845PE Max 2 USB probs

    Hi all,
I have an 845PE max2 board w/ XP pro (my problem exist with or without SP1). My understanding is that there are six USB ports on this board, two of which can be used by either the front of case jacks or the the jacks on the diagnostic plate. I'm using the diagnostic plate and the four on the back of the case.
I have two usb 1.1 hubs (one powered, one not).
No matter what peripheral I plug in to any jack (hubs or on the case) any given day, when I boot up, it will not be found. It is intermittant and I cannot recreate or cause it to happen. I unplug the item and plug it back in and it's found. This also happens with the non-powered hub, the hub itself is not found until I unplug and replug. It doesn't seem to happen with the powered one.
In device mgr without the 1.1 hubs I have:

  • Qosmio F10 - USB devices not being recognised properly

    Hi there,
I've been having major problems with the USB ports of my Qosmio F10. When ever I try to plug in a USB device, the F10 recognises there is something there, but always categorises it as an unknown device. For example, everytime I try to attach a USB mouse, it does not instantly recognise it, even after previously having gone into the device manager and manually installing a driver.
This has been the case since I bought the laptop 5 months ago, but I cant ignore it any longer.
    I have already tried :
    - uninstalling all USB controller and hub drivers and reinstalling
    - making sure that power save for the usb devices was not ticked
-ticking "install software anyway" in the driver signing options
When I open up device manager my USB looks like this
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB 2.0 Enhanced Controller - 24CD
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Serial Host Controller - 24C2
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Serial Host Controller - 24C4
    - Intel (R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Serial Host Controller - 24C7
    -USB Root Hub
    -USB Root Hub
    -USB Root Hub
    -USB Root Hub
Any help on this is much appreciated as its driving me nuts :-)

    Hi
I agree with Jack. You have suggested that the USB devices were recognized but as an unknown device. In this case the device drivers are needed.
Which USB devices did you connect?
Sometimes some USB devices cannot be recognised properly because of the low power of the USB ports. If the USB device needs more power than 500mA standard power the OS could has some problems with the recognition.
In this case you need a external power supply or a USB hub with the power supply.

  • Older IPOD - cannot get Itunes to work now after 7.01 downloaded

I got a prompt to download 7.01, so like a 'do be' I did. Thing is, I don't have video, and QuickTime said it could not run unless I had a 'key'. I logged back on, and the key is $30.00 approx...if it was only 5 dollars, maybe I'd get it. So I uninstalled Quicktime, and now Itunes won't run at all. How do I go back? I'm not even sure what the prior version of Itunes was.
I guess my other question is, why would I get prompted about a new version of Itunes when I have an older IPOD that does not have video?

I HEAR YA! Except mine never works anymore...SO FRUSTRATING!!!!
No one seems to be able to help, either.
    My scenario:
I have been trying to connect to the iTunes store forever, and every time I do, I get the message: iTunes could not connect to the iTunes store. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.
I moved several months ago and it seems like the store hasn't worked since.
I have tried to troubleshoot myself to avoid bothering anyone else: restarting comp, uninstalling and re-stalling, checking firewalls, diagnostic tests, etc. - nothing has worked.
When I run diagnostics, everything is A-OK as it pertains to the network and iTunes store connections. Here is the summary:

  • 845E MAX2-LR / USB 2.0 Issue

Just bought the new 845E MAX2-LR, when using Windows ME and USB 2.0 drivers, I get a green circle with a question mark in the device manager under
Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller.
This does not apper in Windows XP.
Does anybody know what this green circle means? I have never seen it before.

    Pioneer DVD 106S
    HP 9700i CD-RW
    ATI All-In-Wonder 128 PRO 32MB AGP

Be sure you have installed the intel inf first, then after restart install the ICH4 USB2.0 driver .
You need to have an updated bios for it to work, so that might be your problem.

  • Nv4_disp.dll BSOD Errors (solved by driver rollback)

http://projectm.us/murc/planetside/BSOD2.jpg It happens whenever im running a game or program that uses a lota ram. Ive completly replaced my drivers (uninstall/reinstall) and im going to try the MSI drivers, does anyone know how to fix this crap?

If you still have problems, you may want to consider the same process for the chipset drivers.
Before you consider that, also, I think we'd like to see a little more detailed spec of your system, take a look at some of the other user's signatures and create one so we don't have to keep scrolling to see what you have. You don't have to have a graphic one, simple text will do.
Also, copy and past the IRQ's from system information and post it.
It should look like this. Mind you, my workstation is not an AMD based system and the IRQ's will look totally different than that of an nForce board.
    IRQ 0   System timer   OK
IRQ 1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard   OK
IRQ 4   Communications Port (COM1)   OK
IRQ 6   Standard floppy disk controller   OK
    IRQ 7   Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM SMBus Controller - 24C3    OK

IRQ 12   Microsoft PS/2 Port Mouse (IntelliPoint)   OK

  • Temporal SQL query

    Hello,
Could somone please tell me whether or not I can query temporal things with the sql implementation of JDBC (or sql in general). From what I've read reagarding the lack of temporal support I'm guessing not, but I would appreciate some insight from someone who knows. I have a basic database that has things that have changed (i.e. same id but different attributes results in a new object in the database). The kind of query I want to submit is: find things that have attribute a at one time and attribute b at another and give me their id (all records being in the same table).
    Thanks for your help,
    femke

We use Apple's Enterprise Object Framework (EOF is a part of Apple's WebObjects product $800.00) to track changes to our database. EOF provides notification before and after changes are made. The code listens for the notifications and saves the changes in another table. The code to do this was developed by us but the services are available in EOF. Note this only works for changes made through EOF with our notification code listening for the changes. Most people solve this issue with triggers but triggers are DBMS dependent so we opted for EOF which is a DBMS independent relation mapping framework.

  • Upgraded to 10.4.10 and now device not recognized

I upgraded my iTunes and now I cannot use my iPod (5th generation) on my computers.  I tried this on both my work computer (a Windows 2008 R2 server) and my Windows 7 Ultimate.  I now get an error that no iPod is attached.  I had tried uninstalling/reinstalling, every trick proposed. The iPod connection had been working before the new iTunes version.
I was going to submit a support request but I don't want to pay for what appears to be a bad software update!!!

Whoever you talked with doesn't know what they were talking about. The Mac's ability to detect the card has nothing to do with RF interference.
    Try resetting the PRAM.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the open firmware. The procedure is
Start up into Open Firmware by pressing and holding the Command-Option-O-F key combination during startup.
At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-nvram
    Press Return.
At the Open Firmware prompt, type: reset-all

    So:
How do I get iTunes Helper to run again?
How do I get the iTunes update to version 7.6 to successfully install?
    Thank you for your help.

Before reinstalling everything, I'm curious if you've ever used your System Configuration Utility on your computer? Click Start > Run and type msconfig. Click OK. Is the option for 'selective startup' selected? If so, click the Startup tab and make sure iTunesHelper and qttask are selected, and then click the Services tab and make sure iPodService and AppleMobileDevice are selected.
If that is not the case, I would recommend removing everything and reinstalling.
My recommended technique is as follows:
Go into Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
    Remove these applications:
    1. Apple Software Update
    2. Apple Mobile Device Support
    3. iPod for Windows (this may or may not exist, either way, it's not needed so we can remove it)
    4. iTunes
    5. QuickTime
    Restart the computer
Download & Install the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301/
Launch the Utility: Start > Programs > Windows Install Clean Up
Select any of the above mentioned applications, and click Remove
    Restart the computer again
Download & install iTunes again from here: http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
