Dead New Battery

Bought a Macbook about a month ago, it works fine when its plugged in but the battery won't charge. The green light is on my AC adapter, but my battery % is 0 and the button on the battery compartment shows no lights. Wondering if this is a faulty a battery or something that i did by not unplugging it often enough or "overcharging."

That didn't work, so heres the info you requested:

  • IPod Nano 3G - dead as soon as taken off charger - new battery fitted

A couple of years ago my girlfriend won a 4gb iPod Nano 3G in a raffle. As we both had other iPods, it has been sitting in a drawer ever since. The other day I found it, and thought it would be useful for using in my car.
It was still sealed in the box - so I opened it, connected to iTunes, registered it, and synced it.
As soon as I unplugged it, the screen died. I couldn't get it to switch back on without plugging it in. When plugged in (computer or mains) it works fine. As soon as its unplugged it immediately switches off.
As it had been sitting unused for a couple of years, I presumed the battery was dead. I ordered a replacement from eBay - which arrived today. I soldered in the new battery, and left the iPod to charge for a while. The same again - when I disconnect it from the computer, it dies before I've even got the dock plug right out!!
Any ideas? I've tried restoring it with the latest firmware, and I've also tried manually resetting it using the Menu / Center buttons.

I have the same exact problem and situation, took it out of the shelf after two years unused! Any luck?

I refurbished my macbook air 7 months ago because there was a problem with the steady state drive. Now my battery seems to be dead again. How long does the warranty last? Do I need to pay for a new battery?

As I wrote Apple will diagnose an Apple product even if it is out of warranty for free. That should be your first step to find out if the problem is the battery or something else.
Once you have Apple telling you a 7 month old battery is defective (if that turns out to be the case)  then it becomes a game of horse trading. You'll need to speak to the tech and when he tells you there is nothing he can do you will need to speak to the tech manager and when she says most likely there is nothing they can do you go to the store manager, etc.  It is unlikely (though possible) that they will give in easily you need to be firm, polite and let on that you're willing to accept a partial reimbursement.
So again the first step is to find out what is wrong.
    good luck

i left my ipod 5g touch without charging for days and now when i put it in the charger it doesnt charge does it need a new battery or dead ?? where can i buy a new battery in egypt?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    - Try another cable. Some 5G iPods were shipped with Lightning cable that were either initially defective or failed after short use.
    - Try another charging source
    - Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Dead ibook.... new battery...battery on moherboard???

I have an iBook 500 Mhz... it recently started having issues with the date and time wich i attributed to the dying battery that didn't hold the charge for long... one sad day it didn't turn on anymore.... which i attributed once again to the dead and discharged battery... so i bought a brand new battery from the apple store wich came in with half charge... so i plugged it a few hours ago to completely charge the battery before turning on the computer (as it said on the manual when the compter was brand new). So now i looked at the battery charge status and the same two leds are illuminated... seems like it is not charging.... and i tried to turn the computer on to no avail...
    any comments or suggestions...?
does the ibook motherboard has a battery like the desktop computers? when that battery (which among other things holds the date and time) dies the computers don't turn on... could that be the case here?
    Thanks for your help...

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Does the adapter charge the battery? Does the adapter power the iBook?
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
In our experience here, if there is a problem with the dc-in board, the iBook will not run on the AC adapter, nor will the adapter charge the battery. The iBook will only run from a charged battery. If the battery charges and/or the iBook runs on the adapter, then it is likely not the dc-in board.
The same symptoms can happen with a bad adapter (no charging, not running on the adapter).
This doesn't sound like what is happening with yours, however.
There is a capacitor on the logic board which maintains the date and time settings. That capacitor could be malfunctioning, or it could be a malfunctioning PMU (also a part of the logic board).

  • My MacBook is completely dead and a new charger is not lighting up...do I need a new battery?

I have had my second hand MacBook for 18 months and have replaced the charger twice...so when the charger failed to light up or charge the MacBook I ordered a third charger.
But it arrived this morning and the new one does work either ;(
If I take it out and into the port the light sometimes flicks orange incredibly briefly.
My MacBook is completely dead so I can't turn it on to check anything
    Would a new battery help??

    Check out this thread.

  • Ipad mini is completely dead. Button reset does not work. Will new battery fix it?

So a few months ago my ipad mini decided to die 1 month exactly out of warranty... convenient right? Anyway it was charging overnight and was fine when i set it down to sleep. Display and everything was fully functional. The next day i left alone charging, and I came home later to use it. Didnt turn on. tried the reset with the 2 buttons to no avail. Took it to apple and they said it was dead dead, and only offered a replacement.
Thing to mind here is that the charger i was using was somewhat faulty. It would sometimes rapidly charge and discharge due to a faulty connection. My thought is that maybe this started to happen and zapped the battery? Now with this as a possibility, would a completely new battery fix the issue? I could do the repair myself and I'm wondering if the effort is even worth it.

What did the Genius say at the Apple store? I would ask them if a repair is a possible solution. There are certified techs out there that can do the repairs. I once had a damaged antenna on my iphone (out of warranty-they offered a replacement) and I asked the genius if it was possible to fix it and he said yes. It took me a while to get the OEM parts from China, so yes, its possible, but I would ask the Genius first.
Be sure to tell the Genius that you have a faulty connection at home. If you can correct the faulty connection, fix it. If not is it possible to charge it somewhere else?

  • ZenMicroPhoto 8gWouldn't hold charge.Got new battery.Still didn't wk.Now it's dead. =

Dearest Creative Gooroo; Here's my outcry..
My battery was not charging for some reason, so I bought a new one. I kept the mp3 off but charging (from the wall charger) until the new battery arri'ved. The new battery arri'ved and it still didn?t hold a charge. At one point you could see it read ?charging? then it stopped all together, now it'ss back to not holding a charge.. During the time it had a only a few depressing bars of life, I could only operate it ( mp3) while I was connected to my pc (yahoo music jukebox? or creative media source organizer via-usb) but as soon as I disconnected from ?life support? it would shut ?off automatically. Anyway, now it'ss completely dead. Nothing works on it and I?m missing my tunes badly. I can't figure out what to do. I gave up charging it back and forth between accessories and would very much love to just dissect it about now, BUT? I?m holding myself back! =)
Note: Both the battery and the wall charger are both creative.
Any advice will be <i>extremely</i> gratified.
    Thanks my heroes!?

  • MacBook goes dead as soon as power cord is unplugged..time for a new battery or other problem?

For months now my MacBook has been iffy with the battery percentage. It will show 2hours then within the next minute 25 min then 10 minutes then it shoots all the way up to 3 hours. Now it won't stay on unless the power cord is plugged in...and says "not charging" at the top of the screen. Am I in need of a new battery? Or is it something else? Have never had this problem before...my MacBook is approximately 3 years old...

You are posting in an iMac forum. I'd recommend re-posting in the MacBook forum.

  • Mid 2009 macbook pro battery is dead and fan is constantly ramped up (not due to heat). Would installing a new battery fix the fan problem?

Battery icon has an "x" over it and I need to have my laptop plugged in to be on. I've ordered a new battery to install, but I was wondering if it's possible that something else might be causing the fan to be on over drive constantly. I've tried resenting the SMC and the PRAM, but nothing has stopped the fans from running at higher than normal speeds.

If you've updated to Mavericks, you'll either need to use the original install DVD containing the AHT, or download the right one from Apple's servers, then replace the hidden /System/Library/CoreServices.diagnostics   folder.
I think that replacing the battery is likely to stop the fan problem anyway.

  • Macbook OSX 10.5.8 - switches on, makes the usual noise  - then screen goes black. Is it dead?! Can't try anything at all as it simply won't stay on. Had a new battery 4 months ago too.

My old macbook switches on briefly, makes the usual sound - then goes black and silent. It has occasionally switched itself off recently - but then come back on again after a moment a few presses of the power button. It has a new battery 4 months ago after the previous one expanded....Given I can't get it to turn on I can't try anything. Should I go straight to Apple Genius bar?

Hi. Are you running 10.5.8 and do you have the install disk? You could try a pram reset. Hold down Command/Option/P/R key on startup for three chimes and continue boot. If you have the install disk, you could boot to it then use the disk utilities off it to check or repair your drive and permissions. If you have a newer operating system you may have a recovery partition.

  • Brand new battery in 4s and still goes dead in 1 hour!?

sounds like a brand new defect battery

  • New battery from Apple is now dead...

A little while back I had some trouble with the battery that came with my black MacBook. I attempted to calibrate the battery per the instructions posted by Apple. After my computer shut down due to low power, I let it sit for a few hours (Apple recommends "5 hours or more"). The calibration information can be found here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86284
When I plugged in my battery charger, the light on the cable stayed green and did not turn orange, as it normally does when charging the battery. After booting my computer, I noticed a black "X" where my battery life icon normally resides in my menu bar. I tried resetting the PMU and NVRAM to no avail. I tried "re-seating" the battery and nothing. I called Apple and they sent me a new battery which arrived around 11/25/06.
This battery worked flawlessly for a while until today when I decided to calibrate it (hadn't calibrated it yet). I again let it drain and go into sleep mode on its own. I let it set for 5.5 hours after which the power cord was plugged in. The light on the cord stayed green and did not turn orange. When I booted up my computer there was 'again' a black "X" where my battery icon is. I again tried resetting the PMU and the NVRAM but again no luck. Is this normal behavior for a battery to die when drained too much or did I just happen to get two bad batteries? Prior to the calibration attempt, the battery worked like a charm. Has this happened to anyone else? Sorry, this is more of a vent than anything else but I'd be curious to hear other's expeirences with these batteries.
    Cheers,
    Chris

Yes, this just happened to me. My daughter was watching a dvd on my MacBook and it put itself to sleep while she was watching. It then sat overnight. The next day I noticed that the MacBook came out of deep sleep when I restarted, but ever since then I have a large X and "No batteries available" showing in the menu bar. If I remove the powercord while the computer is on, it will shut off.
I've tried resetting the SMU and the NVRAM with no success.
This sounds to me more like a corrupted preference than a hardware failure. Reading similar threads about the problem seems to indicate that a new battery will solve the problem for awhile, but that it will soon come back. The charger light is coming on as a steady green and the computer works fine with the adapter, so I'm pretty confident that it's fine. That would leave either the battery, a software problem, or a deeper problem (many are suggesting a logic board.)
I dread having to call Apple tech support, as I know the rigamarole they'll put me through, treating me as a second class citizen because I haven't purchased Applecare and wanting me to take it to an Apple store, which is more 2-1/2 hours away.
BTW, this is happening with a battery that was carefully calibrated using Apple's specs, which seemed like a ridiculous PITA to begin with.

  • Replaced Battery But NEW Battery still going dead fast

On May 28 2010, I put a NEW battery in my 2007 MacBook Pro3.1 and now this new NEW battery is not holding charge. I charge to 100% and leave off overnight (8 hrs), but still it only runs on battery for about 1.5 hrs before I have to plug in to recharge. Any suggestions? Here is the Power/battery info:
    Model Information:
    Manufacturer: SMP
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0002
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 0110
    Hardware Revision: 0500
    Cell Revision: 0200
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 3331
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: No
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 5370
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 24
    Condition: Normal
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): -1303
    Voltage (mV): 11677
    Thanks.

There is nothing in those numbers to suggest a problem. Did you make sure to calibrate your battery properly? When you say you leave it "off" overnight, are you leaving it plugged in or unplugging? There is no reason not to unplug it while it's sleeping or powered off.
Also, what are you doing while running on battery power? Dim the screen, turn off things like Bluetooth and Airport (if you can), avoid graphics-heavy activities like gaming and videos--these drain your battery much more quickly.
24 cycles is a fair amount for just one month, almost one a day. To make your battery last longer, use it less often and stay on AC power when it's available.

  • Z10 will not charge & with new Battery will not turn on

I have have had my Z10 about a month now, I am gernerally happy with it as a work phone which is similar to my private Iphone5. Unfortunately the Battry life has been reducing on a weekly basis to around 4 hrs between charges. Now it is dead and will not wake up, so I bought a new Battery, now it blinks once the three times but will not turn on.
Any ideas ? The OS is the latest on the Blackberry site, but as I can turn the phone on I can't be more specific.

    Hello,
From your description, if your charger is "known good" (e.g., it can charge other devices), then one can only deduce that something (hardware) inside the BB related to passing power from the charger to the battery has broken. Or that something passing power from the battery to the device has broken.
Regardless, if your charger is 100% fine, then it sounds like a hardware problem for which no amount of OS/software level fixes nor internet-distance diagnostics can be of much value.
I recommend you seek formal support via your official warranty channel. Normally, that starts with your original place of purchase or an authorized service center -- it varies by region.
