Defective maybe?

I just bought my iPod last night. I read and followed the directions to a T. But my computer said the USB port device was corrupt and there was no driver. Meantime, it freezes my iPod. I read everything on the site that regards to resetting an iPod and it didn't work. I had to let the battery die out. Finally once the screen went black, I tried it again. This time I fully uninstalled all the programs the disc came with and reinstalled them. I plugged in the iPod and the charging symbol came on. After a few mintues the iPod turned itself on and the computer FINALLY recognized it but it didn't sync with iTunes. But the screen said "Do not disconnect". Okay, fine. I went to sleep. I woke up, 6 hours later, still to "Do not disconnect." I picked it up and my finger brushed over the middle button, I got one click and it froze again. I can not shut it down by any means that are described in the help sections. HELP ME PLEASE! I mean, is it defective? Are all people having as many problems as myself? I'm not a retard when it comes to things like this, I just can't get it to install.

The outcome: I called them up and went through the entire nine yards of info they needed. Then I describe the problem as shown in the first post. She tells me another way to shut it down that I never saw anywhere on the site. Press and hold at the same time "Menu" and "Select". It shut it right off thank god. She had me right click on the "My computer" icon on the desk top and go to manage. From there she had me look at device manager in the left colomn. After that she made sure that there were no errors in the USB ports and had me reconnect the iPod. Magic happened and it worked. And that was it. She said it might have been messed up because iTunes was updating to the new version when I plugged it in. Hope it helps.

  • Beginning of display Repair

Well I too am the owner of a 17" matte MBP display that has the uneven backlighting. Specifically the bright bar at the bottom of the screen (about 1 inch) and then on the left and right hand sides of the screen dark shadows. I even have small dark triangular shadows coming out of either bottom corner.
I just got my computer about 3 months ago and it started with the corners, then the bright white light at the bottom, and now recently the darkened edges.
I have a local apple store in a mall nearby and have gone in fairly often to take a look at the other MBP's on display only to find the same characteristics. Le Sigh
I finally brought my computer in today and had a genius look at it. He agreed that these were actual problems on my display. However, what was frightening to me is that when I asked him if Apple has or will ever acknowledge this problem, he said "No" very firmly. He suggested that I call customer relations. I don't see what good that would do though.
After talking with him for a few more minutes he said he would order a new screen for me and call me when it arrived. Then all I would have to do is bring in my computer and they would fix it right in the store (Thank god I have applecare) He said the whole process would only take a couple hours and I could pick up my computer later that evening.
My purpose in writing this is I'd like to have your thoughts on this. First off, how does everyone feel with the idea that apple hasn't/probably won't recognize this as a problem? Has anyone else gotten an in-store repair done for this issue? What should I expect?
Are there any decent 17" MBP matte displays out there at all? I'd like to hope that maybe, just maybe I'll end up with a better display.
All suggestions/comments are welcome and greatly appreciated.
    Thank you for your time

Okay so today I brought my computer in for repair as noted in my original post. When I came to pick it up I turned it on with the new display on it (great backlighting mind you) and there was a scratch about an inch long very visible under the lcd! (manufacturer defect maybe?) It looked like someone had taken a pen and scribbled on the screen. At first I thought it was dirt/dust/smudge or a piece of hair. Nope, the mark didn't massage away and it had no texture indicating that it was under the display. I made the tech come out and explain & he stated he didn't notice. Then I asked them to put my old display back on it (with uneven backlighting). He said he's going to order yet another clamshell peice and call me back. Looks like this is the dreaded display replacement procedure that people are referring to.

  • Stalled Internet Conection

So, I have an Extreme and 2 Expresses. Here is my problem. My internet connection seems to be stalling/dropping out for about 5-10sec, then it works again. At first I thought it was Comcast, but when I have my cable modem connected directly to my Mac, the connection never drops. I notice the problem the most with iChat, (either I drop out, or they drop out and we get the No data for 10sec message). Happens while uploading to ftp, or surfing web-pages, they just hang for a few secs, then the page loads. Doesn't happened all the time, just seems random.
I am beginning to think it's a problem with the Airport, as in defective maybe? It's been happening for months and months. I really don't know how to trouble shoot this. Here are some more details:
    3 wired macs
    3 laptops
    1 Extreme
2 Expresses (sharing connection, 1 big network)
The wireless connection is always there, just the internet connect. This happens with my wired Macs as well when iChatting.
Any help will be greatly appreciate!
    -Brett

It could very well be RF interference from another device or devices operating at 2.4 GHz. You can try changing channels until you find a channel that works or you run out of channels.

  • White Keyboard issues

    Hi
I have had problems with Apple's white keyboard. I believe it's still the latest one. Every 3-4 months of normal usage of my keyboard, the keys start sticking and I find it very hard to type. I have brought the keyboard back, and now this is my FOURTH new one. And now my keys are starting to play up again.
I believe it might be due to Hong Kong's really humid weather, very hot and air conditioned rooms. However there is still no excuse. I have the older G4 clear plastic with black keys keyboard. I have used that in my other room for many many years now and the keys feel so much better to type and I have not had the same problems with it. They feel it's made with better quality than the white keyboard.
The reason I bring this up (besides the frustration) is that I want to buy a wireless keyboard and mouse. But I worry if I have the same problem again, then I am in for some serious stressful experiences.
Btw, just typing the 2 paragraphs now, I have experienced the "s", "d" and "a" and "n" keys to just be stuck... so I had to go back and press them again.
Anyway, if there are really good ways of dealing with this, please share it with me. I think I have run out of warranty now to swap for my fifth keyboard.
    Thanks

I actually am on the phone with tech support right now. I have an Applecare Protection Plan so they are sending me a replacement keyboard under warranty.
I also took mine to an apple store. They removed a couple of keys, blew some air in and replaced the keys. When I got home, it worked for about ten minutes and then the problem returned. Same area of the keyboard...left side a,s,d,w,q,z keys. It seems that if you do not press directly straight down on the keys, this happens. Manufacturing defect maybe. Sounds like you need a new keyboard too. I would make sure you get a late model one and keep your receipt though or go to an after market one if they exist (perhaps Logitech). I don't know if the wireless ones are made at the same factory or if they have the same problem. Once again, save the receipt... try it out.... and return it within the warranty period if it doesn't work.
    Good luck.

A defect maybe? does anyone else know anything about this???

Yeah I've noticed that too; Don't worry it's normal, I went to the Apple store and all their iPods have that rainbow; don't let it bug you.

  • Dust Inside my MBP screen? How can I remove it?

So I noticed some dust or debris inside my screen when I was cleaning it out! I'm never in very dusty rooms and the annoying part is that it's very obvious! How can I remove it (if any way)? Should I take it to Apple? It's only been just over a year (in February!) Will they replace it? I have the AppleCare extended insurance! Please help I have no idea what to do!!

I think it's best to take it to Apple and have them deal with it.
I don't want to assume that they will clean it for free.
But if it was a seal defect, maybe the cleaning would be done for nothing.
I don't suggest you open and clean it up.  Might void your warranty.

  • HELP - tracking BSOD with my new W530

Help, this is an event that seems to hit once every 10 days ( 3 times now ) since receiving my new laptop.  I am running model 24382HU - 32GB RAM, BIOS 1.07, Win Pro 7 64 SP1, Crucia 512 SSD ( M4-CT512M4SSD2 ).
The BSOD is comes and goes quick but I managed to see "Driver IRQL is less than ..." which on various forums is driver or hardware defect - maybe memory chip.
The help I am looking for is one - the location of the dump file on my system, two - seeing if anyone else has similar issues.
I have applied critical and recommended patches and still have optional patches to load.  I am one BIOS level behind and I will perform that last.

    Hey Esynodinos,
I just wanted to let you know that the dump file ( I think you mean were you can see error, warning, or information) you can use the Event Viewer. The Windows Event Viewer lets you see several different logs like Application(program) events, Security-related events, Setup events, System events, Forwarded events.
You can find this by: start button, clicking control panel, clicking system and security, clicking administrative tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer. If you're promoted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
Click the event log in the left pane.
Double-click an event to view the details of the event.

  • 2 issues with 13" MacBook Pro (Summer 2009)

(This is my first Mac, by the way.)
    1) and most important: I'm really kind of shocked how poor the font rendering is. I kind of expected it on the web since I've seen the same problems in browsers on non-Microsoft systems like Linux--something about the Microsoft font thing--but I see poor fonts in other apps and even the OS. Like right now if I open my folder in Finder, there are four of the letter U's displayed in icon view. The ones in Documents and Music are blurred on the left side, but the ones in Public and Pictures look more solid. This is just a single example; the same sort of situation is everywhere. All setting are default, although I did try various "font smoothing" options to no avail. Is my screen defective, maybe?
    2) the font size is, IMHO, ridiculously small. Can I do anything, system-wide, to change this. No, I'm not visually impaired. I don't want to cause more problems by "fixing" this one, though (as I've seen happen with changing DPI, etc. in Windows on some LCDs whose native resolution was way too high for their size). I can live with this size, if I have to, but #1 is a real killer.

I'll just assume no one can help then...

  • Disappointed in battery

    Hi there,
Have MacBookPro, for about 3 1/2 years. First battery was everything it says it advertising. Easy 2 3/4 - 3 hours working capacity. No problems charging and all that. When it went bad after about 2 1/2 years of everyday usage I thought that it was all normal.
Went to Apple store and bought new one. After about year and something on second battery I can just claim disappointment. It never gave me 3 hours and it steadily diminished to next to nothing. Monitor says 210 cycles, 40% health and charge at 98%.
In reality, if I disconnect power cable icon on RH corner will never calculate capacity (H:MM) and computer will shut down dead with no warning in about 5-7 minutes!
If I press battery test button on the back it lits up all LEDs. Anybody have any suggestions?

If it's been over a year, you may be out of luck. What they told me at our local Apple Store is that batteries are supposed to last for 1 year or 300 cycles, whichever comes first. At 300 cycles, the battery can be expected to retain up to 80% health.
If your battery is less than 1 year old and is already at 40% health after 210 cycles, it's not performing as it should, and should be eligible for a replacement. If it never gave you 3 hours even when new, then it was likely defective to start out with.
Don't know if the Apple Store will be able to do anything for you--if it's over a year old, they may not. If they think the battery is defective and always was defective, maybe they would--I really don't know. Store policies in Canada seem to be different than US store policies when it comes to batteries. They can, however, do a battery check, which will likely just confirm that your battery is bad and needs to be replaced.
It sounds like you do need a new battery. Hopefully the next one will work properly. If not, be sure to take it back while it's in its warranty period.
    Good luck!

  • 20" ACD Sparkle/Glitter/Grain/Hazy Issue?

I used to own a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 15" with a very grainy matte display. I posted a thread about it here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=723534&tstart=0
Anyways, I returned it because I couldn't stand to look at it anymore and now I'm considering getting a Mac Pro with a 20" ACD along with it. I looked at the 20" at the Apple Store where I was returning my MacBook Pro and I noticed a little bit of the sparkles or grain or whatever you call it but, it was not as bad as my MacBook Pro... but yet it was also not as clear as the iMac display. The screens I was looking at had a lot of fingerprints/dirt/scratches on it so that may have been the reason for seeing this effect on it.
Can anyone who owns a 20" ACD confirm whether their screen is really smooth and clear (if they keep it clean) or if it's more like I'm describing in the MacBook Pro thread. Any helpful descriptions or observations about the quality of the display, please let me know. I don't wanna spend that kind of money on a display that's too sparkly looking.
As a test... try opening a blank Safari page and move it around on the screen... do you see a static pattern that does not move. Then note whether this is hardly noticeable or very noticeable to you. Thanks.

Thanks Gareth! I went to Circuit City, Best Buy and Staples to check out LCDs and the only one I thought was worth buying was the Apple 20" Cinema. I looked at resolution and build quality and the 20" ACD had both a nice high resolution display and the build quality was very good. Excellent case, solid, sturdy stand, smooth hinge and excellent control buttons on the side. So I got it! You're right, the grain is there and is noticeable but, only if you're looking for it. I was using it last night and the grain wasn't really even bothering me at all... I think the bigger pixels help by taking up a bigger area on the screen thus minimizing the effect that the coating has on the display image.
One thing that I am a little concerned about is that the left side has a slight cyan tinge to it which makes title bars and metal windows look slightly blue-ish on that side. If I make a full screen Safari window I can see the color change from one side to the other and the contrast is a little lower on the left side as well. It's really weird when I move a window and watch the hue change a little. It's not that big of a deal but, if I can convince someone that it's defective maybe they'll give me a different display (and hope the new one doesn't have a BIGGER problem). Oh, and right now I'm still waiting for my Mac Pro so I have it connected to my PowerBook G4 (32MB of VRAM) so I dunno if that could be causing this issue. Anyone else have a problem like that?

  • Camera problem on BB curve 9320

But, to answer your questions -- yes, I've seen prior posts here with similar issues.
As for factory defect -- maybe. It could also perhaps be physical damage as in if the device was dropped, the lens could have cracked or something, resulting in the behavior you report.
As for remedies, I've seen some report remedy by following the tedious process...clearly those root causes were not hardware. Others have had their BBs replaced under warranty and all is well for them.
In your case, since your BB is so new, I remain with my recommendation that you take it in for warranty evaluation. If you instead wish to try the tedious process, just say so and I'll gladly provide you the process.
    Good luck!

  • Cracked LED inside phone

I had been waiting for ages to receive my first Blackberry and extremely excited! Eventually, I was lucky enough for my hubby to buy me one!  I'd had it for 3 weeks, and loving it, when I was sitting on the couch and my daughter (13) asked if she could use it to BBM her granny. I placed it in it's magnetic cover and handed it to her. It dropped! It landed on the side which was covered by the pouch, and fell all of 40cm onto laminate flooring. When I picked it up, the screen had a white stripe down the right hand side! Even if I switched it off and restarted it, it was still the same!!! I couldn't believe it! I have had Nokia's, Erikson's and Samsung's before and dropped them "coverless" from larger distances onto concrete and they were still fine!!!!  I took the 3week old, immaculate and unscratched phone, to Vodacom in Greenacres Port Elizabeth, and the agent there took one look at it and told me the LED (or LCD) was cracked inside the phone, (not a scratch on the outside by the way), and that there was absolutely nothing they could do! I was just going to have to buy a new one!!!!!!  What?????? Does he really expect me to buy a new Blackberry after this one was soo finicky??? It has been a few months and I am still using this crack piece of rubbish!!! Im unable to access the internet or anything. Its just for making and answering calls! I can use a crappy R99 phone for that! ........ I just can't help thinking that there may have been a problem with the phone from the start, a defect maybe?  Perhaps it had been dropped when shipping or at the shop and it just needed a small bump to further the damage! I am really soo disappointed!  Can anyone suggest anything? Or has this happened to others? Please let me know?

Sorry to hear about the cracked LCD. I dropped my 8900 shortly after getting it also. Just from a couch to the hardwood floor. Not very far at all. Half the screen was white. Did some checking and found a place close by that repairs BB's. They replaced the LCD for $100. I'm in Canada. Lend my BB to a friend recently and he dropped it. Nothing happened. Go figure!! Do a google search for BB repair places in your area. Good luck

The built in Proximity sensor is suppost to stop this. The Proximity sensor is right above the earpiece. Is your proximity sensor getting close enough to your face/some other object? • Think maybe I have a defect neo2plat

    Hi Guys
I just bought myself a new computer yesterday and used all night putting it together. When I started up the system, everything went fine until the first reboot (windows xp installation was finish copying files).
When the system rebooted, it said detecting ide devices..and it took about 5 mins before it finally gave up and reported that no harddrive was attached.
After this I pushed the reset button and the system found my disk and contiuned installing windows.
After som struggle with the problem described above, windows installed and everything runs smoothly, except when I reboot. Its like 50/50 chance the motherboard finds my harddrive.
Another problem, that may be related, is that sometimes the system will just stop booting after showing the windows xp boot screen. (screen just goes black)
    My system is:
    MSI NEO2-PLAT
    AMD XP3500+
    1024 MB Kingston HyperX

    Geforce FX5900 GFX
    500W Chill Innovation PSU
    Noname IDE DVD-drive
    BIOS ver 1.2
I hope you guys can help me sort this out. Or maybe agree that is has to be the motherboard.
(I ran a hardrive check, but it found no errors)
    Best regards
    Shamran

a small update about my problem.
I have installed a 80GB SATA seagate now, and removed the 200GB  SATA maxtor diamondmax 10 from the system
I have been rebooting all day now, and it seems like the problem is gone when im using the new disk.
Now, can anyone tell me what this means? :)
    1. 200GB SATA is not supported by the motherboard with the current BIOS version.?
    2. My Powesupply is too small for the 200GB disk to work properly?
    3. I got a defect Maxtor harddrive
