Deleting Thumbnails

I had to reinstall my OS after finding Snow Leopard slowed my system to a crawl. I have copies of my iPhoto libraries in several places and multiple duplicates, including duplicates of thumbnails, which I would like to pare down to save space. I'm spending quite some time going through my library to get rid of duplicate photos and would certainly like to get rid of unnecessary thumbnails, as well. Is there any downside to this? Can I just do a rebuild after I've cleaned out my stash?

...and yet another question...or maybe more. If I'm using both windows and mac, and I'm doing backups as you suggested, how would I access the images from my windows machine? Someone suggested exploring an online service like DropBox - what are your thoughts on that?
Background info: I was using windows for photo editing as I had PSE on that machine, and had done a lot of scanning and storing of my family's very old photos, as well as taking thousands of sports action photos during my daughter's activities. I now have PSE for my mac (not yet installed since the reinstallation of Leopard - want to get the hard drive and duplicate photos cleaned up before installing)and would probably do my editing on the mac, but not all those photos (scanned and otherwise)are on my mac yet, and some cannot be directly transferred as the external hard drive is windows formatted and won't interact with my MBP. I was thinking that if I used an online service, I could consolidate the photo files from both platforms, although I will still have to do some major duplicate destruction on the files stored via windows.
Yes, I'm obviously anal about redundancy with duplicates on both platforms (I require internet access for work and have two sources of internet access, as well - cable and DSL - not a big risk taker...). Since I'm not very computer literate beyond working with programs, I don't necessarily understand the ramifications of past formatting decisions and now have to live with the consequences.
Lots of rambling, sorry. Just grateful to have access to expertise. So, anyway, my questions are:
-How to access windows formatted hard drive photo files from my mac;
-if I will be using PSE, do I want to import photos into iPhoto at all;
-will photos imported into iPhoto be accessible to PSE;
-your opinion on internet storage;
-recommendations on external hard drives I could use to make backups (considering using Super Duper) with the intention of using two different drives, taking one in to work to safely store in case of disaster and one at home, then intermittently switching them out so the remote one doesn't get too outdated.
Redundancy, redundancy.
Again, thanks.

  • Deleting thumbnails from Organiser

If I delete thumbnails from the Organiser main window, the same thumbnails are also deleted from my Collections and tagged files.
Is it necessary for the Organiser to work that way or am I missing something? I just wanted to have less thumnnails to scroll through and once they are tagged it seemed logical to delete the thumbnails from the main window.
    Thanks
    John

    John,
In addition to suggestions such as using a Show tag, it seems that for some cases the Find menu choice of "find untagged items" might be useful for you.
Another general comment is that you probably do not want to place all photos in Collections. I use Collections to make specific arrangements of photos for specific purposes like a slide show. If I have photos from an event like a family birthday party, I make a Tag for the event and then also apply people tags. Only when I am ready to use the photos for something like a slide show where I also want to control sequence, do I make a Collection.
Sometimes people start by using a Collection instead of a Tag for an Event. A Tag has more flexibilty for searching and is therefore almost always better for identification of the photos.

  • Delete Thumbnails from iPhoto? (deleted originals from Finder)

Hi, I don't use iPhoto (find it too constrictive) but a friend asked for help with using it. It appears he was trying to clean out his large photo collection, but decided to do it from the Finder (now why would anyone in their right mind think you could delete files using the Finder?!?)
Unfortunately, he now says that the files are not gone from iPhoto. I'm assuming he's still seeing the thumbnail images that iPhoto creates.
    - Is there 'any' way to find all of the missing files within iPhoto so you can delete them and/or their thumbnails from the iPhoto library?
I know how to do this in iView easy enough, but didn't see a 'find missing' command in iPhoto.
I told him that in the future, to do 'ALL' housekeeping from within the "i" programs that ship with a Mac. They seem to like to keep complete control of where everything is, how it's filed, how it's labled, etc. That's probably why I don't prefer to use them. Any exceptions to this??
    Thanks!

Anybody have any ideas?? I'm sure there must be some people who have run into this.

  • Delete thumbnails.

Since you changed your browser format, I can't delete any of the thumbnails in my "New Tab" section. Something must be broken on your end because I haven't changed anything since you changed your format.

Do you see the close X to delete a website in one of the tiles on the about:newtab page?
Can you drag another link (history item or bookmark) to one of the nine tiles?

  • Can you delete thumbnail files safely

I need to clean up for HD space.
FCPX GENERATES a lot of thumbnail files.  Can these be deleted safely, what can happen if I do?
Render files have not been a problem I know they render again.
    Thanks,
    AppleLou

Yes. The thumbnail files will be re-geerated the next time you open the project.
Just to say, however, that you should not expect  any more than very modest space savings. It's the High Quality Media render folder that typically offers the big potential for savings.

  • PSE7 organizer freezes when deleting thumbnails

I am attempting to empty my organizer catalog since I have moved the majority of my photos to an external hard drive.  If I delete 20 thumbnails at a time I have no problems other than it seems to take an unusually long time.  If I attempt to delete all, or even a stack of 200, the program freezes at 39% completion, and my only option is to end the "non responsive" program with the task manager.  I have near 5000 thumnails that I need to delete.  I've checked the catalog for errors and none were found.  I'm not sure if this is related or not, but as of yesterday my welcome screen has a new terms of use area where my member registration should be.  If I try to click ok it says "there was a problem updating your account."  So I am not even able to login on the welcome screen.  I've checked for updates and there are none.  Any advice as to what to do would be truly appreciated!

Ok, I do understand what you are telling me to do, but should this remove the photos from my catalog to drag and drop as you say?  I tried doing this with only one stack of photos to begin with, and the stack still shows up in my catalog.  The only thing that's changed is the location of the photos.  My issue is really that I don't want to have all of these thumbnails in my catalog.  I don't want to have to wait on them to generate before downloading photos or sort through them.  Once I'm thru editing I would like for them to go away.  Does this make sense?
    Nope. Doesn't make sense.
You put photos in your catalog because you want to keep them and manage them. There's no point to using the catalog in the mode "Once I'm thru editing I would like them to go away".
The photos shouldn't be generating thumbnails each time you open PSE, unless you have another different problem. Perhaps you could explain that further.
If I do start a new catalog will this one disappear?
I hope this is not a completely stupid question, but do people really leave thousands of photos in their catalogs?  If so, why, and does it take a long time to generate thumbnails upon opening?
I'm not computer illiterate, but I'm no genius either....any help really is appreciated!
New catalog is a new file on your hard disk with no photos. In that case, the old catalog remains on your hard disk, but isn't hurting anything.
Yes, the whole point of a catalog is so that you can manage and organize and find your photos, so people do leave thousands of photos in their catalog. In my case, I have ALL of my photos in my catalog. In my mind, there is absolutely no point to having some photos in your catalog and other photos not in your catalog.

  • Delete Thumbnails of photos with invalid reference

    iPhoto08
Ive searched the fourms but didnt find what I was looking for.
I am looking for a way to delete the thumbnails of the photos in my iphoto library where the reference has been broken. I had sort of a hybrid library of managed and referenced photos. I have since deleted the referenced photos via finder but the thumbnails remain in iphoto.
So I have about 15,000 thumbnails I need to get rid of (and keep about 5,000 which are the managed files).
Is there any way to delete invalid referenced thumbnails only? Ive tried the rebuild but there is no way Im going to sit here and click "ok" 15,000 times when iPhoto pops up the "cant find photo" window.
    Thanks in advance.

    This may work:
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords.
If it doesn't then your options are to click ok 15,000 times or create and populate a new library.

  • How Do I Delete Disconnected Thumbnails in Elements 11

How do I delete disconnected thumbnails in Elements 11?
In previous versions, I could easily do this using Reconnect All Missing Files, but Reconnect no longer has an option to delete thumbnails, that I can see.

MSExplorer wrote:.Why is Elements creating these thumbnails in the first place?
Just compare your catalog to the physical catalog book you get for an art museum : you have all sorts of information about the paintings, their authors, descriptions, indexes... and you are shown a small 'thumbnail' for each painting. That is to enable quick identification of the paintings.
In a catalog, each thumbnail is a very small reduction of the original. All those thumbnails are stored in the catalog folder itself, in a file named thumbs.5.cache.
    Now, about 'disconnected' files.
There is some ambiguity here : 'disconnected files' are media files for which the path stored in the database is wrong. The reason is generally because the media file has been moved, renamed or deleted. There is still the old path in the database, but it is no longer valid.
For 'offline' media, that means that the physical drive is disconnected, but the paths stored in the database (catalog) are still correct. You simply have to plug in your external media to give the organizer or editor access to the real media file.

  • How to I get high res thumbnail images?

Just discovered once I've imported images into my library Aperture 3.2.2 (running under 10.7.3) doesn't render high res thumbnail images (when the Browser Thumbnail Resize slider is set to the far right/maximum), even though my "Previews" preference settings are as follows:
"Use embedded JPEG from camera when possible" is unchecked
"Don't Limit" for Photo Preview is selected
Photo Preview quality set to 10
Deleting and regenerating thumbnails doesn't solve the issue. However, if I delete the photo from the referenced library, then reimport the image, the browser thumbnail image renders sharp. The low res thumbnail is at left; high res thumbnail (after re-import) is at right. Both thumbnails images are sharp when the Browser Thumbnail Resize slider is positioned in the middle. Photos render sharp in the Viewer, regardless.
Going back through my images, it seems Aperture stopped providing a sharp thumbnail image since around July 2010. Other than updating Aperture, my workflow or supported camera hasn't changed. Couldn't find a reference to this issue in the User Manual. Am I missing something a setting somewhere?
    Thanks,
    Eric

Its unclear if the command Generate Thumbnails actually does anything if the thumbs already exist and as there isn;t a Delete Thumbnails command like there is a Delete preview command there are only two ways to force a new thumb to be generated.
One is to import the image again and two is to delete the Thumbnail folder in the Aperture library. I don;t know for sure if this will fix you problem but as I said it is the only way to force the generation of the thumbs.
If you try this make sure you have a good working backup of the library. Nothing here will normally cause data loss but it is always a good idea before messing with the library.
Quit Aperture, Highlight the library in the Finder and right click, Select show package contents. One fo the folders you'll see is Thumbnails, delete it. Open Aperture.
Also be aware that the regeneration of the thumbs will take some time. Depending on the size of the library it could be an all day affair. Aperture is usable while this is going on but it will be slower.

  • Thumbnails not as the picture is!

    Hi,
I upgrade from iphoto to photo today.
I have a big issue, 30% of the thumbnails in photo does not correspond to the picture behind !
Am I the only one or this happened also to some of you???

In my case, after deleting thumbnail data file from Photos library, it started working well again.
It makes Photos regenerate thumbnails and looks good to me.
Those thumbnail files are located in " [photos library path] / Thumbnails / Segments / "

  • Explorer crashing when generating thumbnails view for large (4GB) video (.TS) files

I am suffering consistent application crashes in Windows Explorer when it tries to generate thumbnails.
The error is reported as COM Surrogate has stopped working with an APPCRASH of dllhost.exe in module msvcrt.dll.
This only but always happens in the following circumstances.  A folder set to view tiles or icons (with thumbnail view option NOT disabled).  This folder contains several sub-folders, each of which contain video files.  As explorer scans the
folder and its sub-folders, generating thumbnails for each, whenever it encounters a video file (.TS) that is 3.99GB or larger. COM surrogate crashes again.  Closing COM Surrogate will then allow explorer to continue to scan the remaining sub-folders
until it encounters the next large file.
If I subsequently open one of the sub-folders where it crashed trying to generate a thumbnail, and refresh the folder, it will successfully generate a thumbnail for the video file. If I then return to the main folder and change the customization of the sub-folder
from video to document and back to video, explorer then successfully generates the folder icon with the inset video thumbnail.
I have tried this in safe mode and the problem persists.
Can anybody please help as I am pulling my hair out.

    Hi Roger.
Almost all of my media files are TS, and all of my large (4GB) files are TS files, so I cannot tell if other file types have the same problem.  I did try renaming the TS files to be .mpg (they still play as mpg) but this did not help.
However, I have downloaded and used ShelleExView and this has proved very useful.  For the benefit of anyone else with a similar problem and using this very useful tool, I will detail the technique I used.
First, using ShellExView, I disabled various groups of extensions to identify which, if any, were relevant.  After disabling/enabling each set I performed a system restart to ensure the changes took effect.  This was not actually necessary as restarting
Windows Explorer (via Task Manager) works equally well (but this loses my customm Taskbar toolbar).
Also, before re-opening the folders containing the problem files, I deleted the icon cache (I could have done this manually but chose to use CCleaner's delete Thumbnail Cache option as this was quick and easy).  I then viewed the folders containing
the problem files, watching to see what effect the changes in ShellExView had made.
Using ShellExView, I progfessively disabled by Type (e.g. Thumbnail, Icon Handler), then by Company (e.g. non-Microsoft), then by Product (e.g. MS Office, Windows Search).  The result was that I identified the extension that was creating the thumbnails:
Icaros Thumbnail Provider (installed as part of the K-Lite codec pack).
Hoping I had found the cause, I removed K-Lite from my system and checked again.  No thumbnails (as expected), but COM Surrogate continued to crash (I have subsequently reinstalled K-Lite as I need this to play my media files).  Further analysys
with ShellExView then identified a further problem extension: Microsoft's MF MPEG Property Handler.
With both extensions (Icaros Thumbnail Provider & MF MPEG Property Handler) disabled, COM Surrogate does not crash.  With either one enabled, but not the other, COM Surrogate crashes.  These two extensions are therefore both individually causing
the crashes.  This leads me to wonder if they perhaps have something in common (e.g. a dll).
Although disabling these extensions stops the crashes, I of course alos lose what they provide: file details (e.g. media length etc.) and thumbnails.  So simply disabling them is not a solution.
Is it possible to idenitfy what, if anything, they have in common (which may be the true culprit)?
Alternatively, are there other ways I can continue to obtain file property information and thumnails without using these extensions?

  • My PSE elements 7.0 on Vista shuts down before loading thumbnails.

I get the Windows error sign that then shuts the organizer down. The thumbnail spinner having stopped working.
I have repaired the catalog, optimized it and reindexed and repaired again.
I have deleted PSA and status.dat
    I have deleted thumbnail cache
I have uninstalled and reinstalled PSE.
    I have created anew catalogue
I have imported pictures to the new catalogue successfully.
The thumbnails were created. I worked on this catalogue for about one hour. Exited. When I reloaded PSE the same fault occurred immediately.
Windows picture viewer and Photo Gallery work fine with all my catalogue.
The fault module name is EZdH264DecTFilter.dll
    What should I try next??

Thanks for the advice. I do suspect the problem is something to do with
video files. But turning of the Active File Monitor sadly has not  fixed the
    problem.

do you use gwenview? if so, i'd guess that it's responsible for generating a large percentage of your thumbnails.
fortunately, it has this option: Settings / Configure Gwenview / Advanced -> "Delete thumbnail cache folder on exit"
also, if you're a gnome user, i think there are global options for controlling the cache size.

    Hello
I read a lot of review about this probleme, but no solution for me....
can you help me please ?
I'm running iPhoto on my Macbook Pro (my system is up to date)
I got some "ghost Thumbnails" which are impossible to delete even one by one.I made all this:
    -Repair permissions
    -Rebuilt the librairy
-Run Batchmod with all settings (like this:http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/BatChmod.png)
    -Delete cache files
Try to delete thumbnail one by one (using Ctrl when emptying the trash)
No result, ghost are always here !!!!!
    Any idea would be great...
    thanks a lot, I 'm HAUNTED by 122 ghosts !

Some users reported that this problem went away after they turned off "show item counts" in iPhoto preferences. I think they turned off the counts, quit iPhoto, did a library rebuild, quit iPhoto, launched iPhoto, emptied iPhoto trash, quit again, and after that it worked. Not sure how much of all that is really needed, but it worked for several people with this problem.
What happens when you right-click on one of the ghosts and choose "Show File" from the pop-up menu? Will it reveal the location of this file in Finder?
