Disappearing Catalog PSE & PE 10

The case of the disappearing catalog
Windows 7
Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 10
Previous versions were 7, 8 and 9 for both programs
Versions 9 and 10 are still on my computer
I purchased versions 12 but have never downloaded them.
Maybe if I installed versions 12 I can direct it to the catalog I need?
My catalog that I had been using for version 10 disappeared sometime in the past six months (Sept 2014 through Feb 2015).  I can find catalog.pse9db that has data created through 03-25-2013.  It is 35.2 Mb in size.  The other catalogs I can find with the file name catalog.pse9db are smaller in size and do not have the data the 03-25-13 file contains.
The catalog file catalog.pse10db that I can find with a similar size, 41.5 Mb, does not have the same information.  It does not have the same album list.  When I open up the file it has only one smart album from the past 6 months.  Not sure how to get at the other albums that make up the 41.5 Mb.
I noticed the directory location changed for many of the files that I could find with the
Windows Explorer file search function.  Not sure why the different directory structure (location) got used?
Please offer some ideas I can follow.
Thank you
James

Hi,
When you will install PSE 12 it will automatically give you an option to convert the PSE 10 catalog to PSE 12.
Also to troubleshoot on the PSE 10 try the below:
Delete the thumbnail cache which sometime becomes corrupted. Navigate to:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\MyCatalog
Inside the MyCatalog folder (or whatever name you gave your catalog) you should find a CACHE file:
thumb.5.cache
After deleting that file restart the elements Organizer and wait whilst it regenerates thumbnails.
Note The ProgramData folder is sometimes a system hidden file, in which case please follow these instructions before starting:

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • All of my photos have disappeared from PSE Organizer 13 (after I upgraded it).

All of my photos have disappeared from PSE Organizer 13 (after I upgraded it).  The files are all on the HD.  When I try and reimport them, Organizer says they are already in there and will not allow me to proceed.  When I highlight a keyword, Get the message  "NO MEDIA TO BE DISPLAYED".  Perhaps I am dense, but I find the Search function of the Forum to be near useless, unless I just happen to type the Exact name of a topic.
I now have no access to perhaps 35,000 files from 12 years of using PSE!

Which operating system are you running on?   Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
Which version did you upgrade from?  updated from PSE 13 to PSE 13.1
In the organizer, which view are you using - in the View menu is Details checked or unchecked - does it make any difference?  was unchecked now checked.  Now can see the other files, but the Keyword tags that I had attached in the past does not bring up the selected frames.
In the View menu, select Media types - are all checked?  At this point I have only Ohotos and videos checked
In View menu, select Hidden Files - is Show All Files checked?  yes
I'm assuming that you are in Media view, what happens if you select People Places or Events?  get groupings of files with those keywords.

Thanks Brian, at least some of my problems are gone, just can't get the keyword sorting to work correctly

  • How do I remove multiple duplicate photos in a catalog PSE 10

I have multiple duplicate photos in my Photoshop Element 10 catalog - I have run across the compare a photo tutorials but I have possiblely some 200+ photos that are duplicates.
Has anyone come across a simpler way to remove duplicate photos?

If I use Dup Scout or another similar utility, and it removes the duplicates from the hard drive, won't I end up with many links to now deleted files
Yes, but then using the "Reconnect All Missing Files" function in PSE will allow you to abort the reconnection and choose to delete all the missing files from the catalog.
As always, first experiment with a very small subset of the images to see if that method will work for you.

  • There was a problem opening the catalog 'My Catalog' PSE 4.0

In the new PSE 4.0 I always get the message "There was a problem opening the catalog 'My Catalog'", then after pressing the start button again, the catalog starts. Is that the same error that was solved in Version 3.0 with the update 3.0.1.
That would be not very nice!!!! :(.

  • Catalog PSE and LR

Are the LR and PSE Catalogues connected?
I cannot move PSE catalog because it tells me it is in use by another program.
I have some files in PSE that came from LR that I got on trial that expired.
    What can I do?
    Thanks.

No the catalogs are separate although from the Library module you can click File à Upgrade Photoshop Elements Catalog.
Most people use Lightroom as their primary raw editor but with Elements or CS6 set up as the external Editing app to do some of the more fancy stuff involving layers and masks. The initial image is sent to Elements as a PSD or Tiff together with the Lightroom Develop settings but the results after further editing in PSE are saved back to the Lightroom Library.
You normally make the round trip from Lightroom as follows:
    1) Ctrl+E in the Library to export with develop settings
    2) Edit in Elements; then Ctrl+S to overwrite Lightroom export copy
    3) Ctrl+W to close in Elements and update Lightroom thumbnail.

  • Convert Catalog (PSE 5 to PSE 7) Issue with Tags!

Upon installing PSE7 and attempting to convert my PSE5 catalog I ran into a problem that I had not seen described anywhere else. The information obtained from the various other discussions/forums helped point me in the right direction (conversion logs, etc.) for performing a root-cause analysis and eventually correcting the problem. I wanted to share this info with others to hopefully help prevent somebody else from dealing with this same frustration.
After installing PSE7 and attempting to execute the conversion process it would fail immediately. I attempted all the normal documented corrections (repair catalog, reconnect photos, backup/restore) with no luck. Upon reviewing the conversion logs I noticed that the failure appeared to occur while the conversion was attempting to process the tags! Interesting, as none of the online items I read had mentioned any problems with tags during the conversion process. I opened the suspect catalog in Microsoft Access 2007 and focused on the table named "FolderTable" which appeared to contain the information pertaining to the tags. Comparing the offending tag (identified as the last tag attempted by the conversion process) with the other entries I noticed two columns appeared to have invalid entries.
    fFolderLongitude
    fFolderLatitude
Both columns contained the value "1.#QNAN". No idea where those values came from but the rest of the rows had valid numeric values. Within Access I modified the values of these columns to "-181" and "-91" respectfully as these appeared to be the default values for many of the other rows/entries. I exited Access and re-attempted the catalog conversion. Success.......the catalog converted without any problems after making these modifications. Hope this helps others....
One final note, I've been in IT developing software for computers for over 20 years and can say without queston that after dealing with this situation and reading some of the issues encountered by others that Adobe has done a pathetic job on the code for the conversion process!

Thanks much for providing such great detail. I haven't heard of the conversion failing before during tag conversion.

  • Moving My Catalog PSE 13

Ok I hope someone can assist me. So I used the Move/Copy to another drive I moved all of my pictures using this command and now I have a mess. I use to have all of pictures neatly tucked away in individual folders. I needed to free up some space on my hard drive. Now all of my photos or at least most of them moved to the external hard drive but now I don't have any folders and there still are many pictures still remaining on Hard Drive. To make matters worse I thought I would do a back to the same external drive but I forgot to make a separate folder and now I have a mess. If anyone has a solution for this it would be greatly appreciated.

The command 'Copy/move' is similar the 'Export' command. It works on individual files, not on folder trees or branches. The result always gets into the folder you have chosen.
What you want to do is to 'move' a folder tree or a part of it to another location. It's not moving the catalog (the database where the details and location on the drive of the pictures are kept) it's moving the pictures themselves while keeping their structure in the Explorer/Finder. I'd call that moving a 'library' or part of a library.
Keep in mind that 'moving' is only an image, a metaphor in computer language. You really first Copy something somewhere, then you Delete the original files.
How to do this library move ? If you do it from the Explorer/Finder by drag and drop or the menu, that seems easy, but the catalog is not updated, so you'll have to 'reconnect' your files. If you do it by small batches, that can work well.
It's recommended to do it from the Organizer itself. In the left folders panel, depending on the Elements version, you show the folder tree just like in the explorer/finder. You drag and drop, and the Organizer updates the path for the files in the catalog database.

To make matters worse I thought I would do a back to the same external drive but I forgot to make a separate folder and now I have a mess. If anyone has a solution for this it would be greatly appreciated.
You should deal with that problem first. Your backup has stored a number of copies of your files in a wrong folder, and you want to delete them. Most of those files begin by B00... It's relatively easy to find them and to delete them. That should recover most of the space on your drive.
The problem you have left now is that you have lost your folder tree structure. If you had no backup, there is no way to restore it exactly. It's possible to use other data in the catalog to create a new folder structure based on dates (recorded from exif in the picture files), on albums or themes like events or places. You select pictures corresponding to a specific empty folder and you move them there.
My advice is to keep the new structure simple since that does not add any advantage to using the catalog and its virtual organization of categories and keywords.

  • Manage catalogs PSE 11 organizer

Transported a 350 Gb catalog from PC to an Imac. New files was made with new names in my extern harddrive. I cant belive that I must have another 350-400 Gb on my harddrive. Have tried transport or delete the backup but my mac do´nt allow me to do that. All installation worked perfectly with all 31,000 tagged photos. How can I remove the doublet pictures?

Looks like you took a Full Backup of your catalog <which means copying your files from PC to har drive> and then additionally copied all the pictures onto the hard drive and hence the doubling. Just a guess.
Since you used your hard drive on Win machine. Its file system NTFS is not readable to MAC. Try the suggestions given on the link : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1916542?start=0&tstart=0

  • Import PSE 3 catalog into PSE 13?

I have an old PSE 3 catalog (.psa file) that I need to open in PSE 13. I downloaded, installed, and ran Adobe's dedicated converter, per Adobe's instructions and obtained a "successful conversion" message upon completion. However, when I open the resulting catalog in PSE 13 thumbnails for the "first" images display, but when I attempt to scroll down, or "Ctrl End" to the end of the catalog (there are more than 12,000 images in the catalog), PSE 13 hangs and "stops responding". Of course, what I care about is the tags attached to the images, and used to sort them in PSE 3. How do I recover/preserve/access this tag info? or, how do I "fix" the, obviously failed, conversion so that I create a catalog from my original .psa file that PSE 13 can correctly open?

On the new computer, in PSE9, select File->Restore Catalog, and point it to the backup you made from PSE3. You will be given several options about restoring the photos, including one that is to original directory location.
More details are here: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/402/kb402894.html (which was written for PSE6, but applies to later versions of PSE as well)

  • PSE 5 index / catalog duplicate filenames

How does the Photoshop Elements 5 catalog / indexer handle duplicate filenames? Or not? If you just upload your camera's native filenames, you're going to have a lot of _mg_3444.jpg, _mg_3445.jpg, etcetera, files over time. Is this why when you add photos to the catalog, PSE 5 reports back that new file wasn't added to the catalog because the filename alredy exists?

    >Is this why when you add photos to the catalog, PSE 5 reports back that new file wasn't added to the catalog because the filename already exists?
I do not have that message in front of me but I think it says the File already exists rather than the Filename already exists.
The criteria that the Organizer uses to determine whether a photo file is a duplicate of a photo already in the catalog uses more factors than just file name - factors such as size, date and time.
Yes, I agree that there will be different photos that have the same file names. However, the use of the additional criteria should usually prevent different photos with the same file name from being rejected for import.
Usually when I see that message, it is because I have previously imported that photo. Perhaps I had the same photo in multiple folders on my hard drive or I already had a photo and then received it again from another source. Or I am importing from a camera card that still contains photos that were previously imported.
If I get a rejected as a duplicate photo and I don't immediately know why, then I may use the Organizer Find menu and do a Find by Filename to see all photo files with the name that was just rejected. Then I can look at all the photos with that file name to find which one duplicates my current attempted import.

  • Fixed Video CreationDate Sorting After Converting PSE Catalog

My experience with the problems of sorting videos properly by creating date nearly caused me to give up and go back to PSE Organizer...but I dug in, hacked out a solution, and now I'm sharing it in case it helps anyone else.  This worked for me...but please realize that I could have destroyed my own catalogs if things weren't all as expected.  My Python script below is a down & dirty, no frills way to convert and push all the "CORRECT" timestamps in my old PSE10 catalog to the horribly handled and mis-dated VIDEO files in LR4.  Here's the script for all those who dare to take the life of their catalogs into their own hands.
    #  WARNING: Use at your own risk.  This worked for me, but could completely    #
    #           DESTROY your catalogs for both Lightroom (LR) and Photoshop        #

    #           all video files in a Lightroom 4.0 catalog (have not verified this #
    #           for any other version), looks for the correct creation date/time   #
    #           for those files in the PSE catalog, converts the PSE UTC stamp to  #
    #           MY LR local timezone (US/Central), properly formats the output for #
    #           LR's captureTime, and saves them in the LR catalog.                #

Also, since my camera does not create sidecar files and the video format does not allow for metadata directly...I have problems with date sorting.  LR likes the "Creation Date"; while I understand that Windows' NTFS is one of the few operating systems that actually store a "Modified Date", I cannot understand why Adobe would choose to use a data that changes with every copy (Creation Date), rather than the original capture date (Modified Date) when it is clearly available.
My solution is to move my videos to their final destination outside of LR, run the below PowerShell script to set Creation and Accessed dates both to the Modified date for the file, and then import with LR.  This is a blatant waste of time, but it seems the least of evils I'm aware of (up to the LR 4.0 I'm currently running).  If anyone knows of a better solution, please point me that direction.  Otherwise, I'm hoping this may help others in my boat.
If you ask "Why PowerShell when your last script was Python?"...it boiled down to being able to do the most work with the least amount of coding since Powershell has all that's necessary.
Just create the below as FixDates.ps1, then use command.exe in the root of the directory (and sub directories, since this works recursively) you want to do this for.  I use this on the directory for the batch I just imported.
OH, AND OF COURSE...USE FOR INSPIRATION/UTILITY AT YOUR OWN RISK.  IT WORKS FOR ME, BUT I GUARANTEE NOTHING...
    $Videos = Get-ChildItem . -Recurse | where{$_.Extension -match "avi|mov|3gs"}
    foreach ($Video in $Videos) {
        Write-Host $Video.fullname
        $Video.CreationTime = $Video.LastWriteTime
        $Video.LastAccessTime = $Video.LastWriteTime

How can I correct the PSE catalog to clear up the drive and serial number warnings and reconnect my catalog to the photo files?
    Thanks.
    Steve

Try reconnecting just one of the photos that was originally on the C drive.   In the reconnect dialog, are you able to browse to the new location of the photo on the M drive and identify it's thumbnail?   If so, what happens when you try to reconnect to that file?   If there's an error message, what is the precise message?
Looking at the "psedbtool" output, it's possible that PSE may be getting confused by the following situation: The drive currently called L used to be called M, and the catalog records M in its volume table, and there is now another drive currently called M.  PSE sometimes uses the drive letter written in its catalog and sometimes uses the drive's volume serial number.   When the current drive letter associated with a volume serial number doesn't match what's in the catalog, PSE can get confused.
    So two suggestions:
    1. Go back to the original PC and use the backup/restore method to move your photos from the old to the new computer:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos_1
I strongly recommend this method, since it is more likely to succeed in the face of all the drive-handling bugs in PSE.   After doing the restore, use Display > Folder Location view to rearrange the heirarchy or move parts of it to other drives.
    2. Reassign the drive letter of the current M (6892-2C47) to something different, e.g. O.   Then reassign the drive letter of the current L to be M, so it matches what's in the catalog:

This may likely solve your problem, but I can't say 100%.

  • PSE 7 reconnect file bug?

I have copied the following from a 2008 message which appears to address my problem, but I cannot figure out how to get to the advised thread. I tried searching on the apparent title words, but the result was always this same message.
COPIED FROM 19 OCT 2008 MESSAGE FROM JOHN ELLIS:
"If you reconnect a file and get the message <old file> was not connected to <new file> or The file already exists in the catalog, then youve stumbled over a PSE bug for which there are workarounds.   See this thread:<br /><br /><a href="/webx?14@@.59b66777/5">John Rolfe Ellis, "Cannot Reconnect; File already exists" #6, 17 Sep 2008 2:49 pm</a><br /><br"
My husband put a new, larger hard drive into my computer and transferred all my files to the new one which is now the master C: drive. I have tried and tried to reconnect my files, individually and as a group, but I always receive the error message listed below in John Ellis's message. Has anything been done to correct this bug, if that's what it is? I cannot simply move everything back to the old F: drive, because now there are new photos mixed in and I've reorganized the folders. I can find the pictures manually, but can't get the program to accept my choices. I'm really beginning to regret spending the money to upgrade to PSE 7, especially as the program crashes or freezes up, too, but I'll deal with one problem at a time! BTW, I'm usiing Windows XP, service pack 3.
    Thanks for any help possible.

    Kathy,
Hmm, the output is still truncated.  I've attached an example of what it should look like below -- after "PSE Volume Table" should be many lines.
    1. Did you reply via email, or did you reply by coming back to the forum in your Web browser?  (You need to do the latter -- email replies don't always work.)
    2. In the Notepad that "psedbtool" popped up with the contents of "output.log", is it possible that some of the output wasn't showing (scrolled out of view)?  Do Edit > Select All, Edit > Copy, and then paste.
Here's what it should look like:

  • PSE 8 dialogue/value windows appear BLACK by default.

Hi, I'm a forum newbie, runningPSE 8 on an iMac.  Is there a way to change the default dialogue / value windows to white or transparent, please?   I'm also seeking a plug in to enable Channel manipulation in PSE.  Many degraded graphics arise from problems in the green or blue channel which compromises the final RGB image.  Any help and advice will be gratefully received.
    Warm regards, paulranger1.

    Dear Ms. Barbara B.,
Thank you so much for your kind advice to help address my PSE 8 problems.  Your suggestion about selecting the 'darker options' (May the Force be with you!) worked a treat with dimensions/value windows now readable as a white numeric figure against a dark grey window background.   That problem appears solved.  Thank you.
I downloaded the Grant's (Dixon?) Plug Ins, with explanatory video guide and seem to have navigated the various components to their correct destination.  In my PSE 8 'Tools' window, I have the following windows displayed on the RH side of the 'Tools' window:-
    "Effects" - compacted to display only Grant's Blue / Green / Red / RGB channel icons;
    "Layers" - below "Effects";
"Color Swatches" - this one is very nomadic; it is not anchored to the backdrop "Tools" window as are the "Effects" and "Layers" windows above it.  When I switch                        back to this email composition window, the "Color Swatches" window 'disappears' with PSE 8 open in the background, unlike the other 2.
I opened PSE 8 and opened an image with severely compromised channel balances and can understand the basic functions of Grant's channel plug in/s.  I would be happy to pay him something for his excellent (and I suspect, unique) enhancement of PSE; it seems unfair that I should not offer something or at least express my sentiments here.
There are three further things with which perhaps you could again help me, please Barbara
I'd like to anchor the "Color Swatches" palette on the RHS as Effects and Layers are.
I'd like to anchor all open, RHS windows to the backdrop, "Tools" window.  E.g. my current selection of Effects/Layers (and 'Adjustments' palette I've just added).
Are any of these possible, please?
Again, I thank you sincerely for your selfless assistance.  I am
    Yours sincerely,
    Paul Collins.
