Discovery of APs
How can I discover lightweight 1131AG Access Point using 2106 WLAN Controller.
Hi Friend,
You have to first configure your 2106 WLC with management ip address/mask and gateway and vlan number and then connect your LWAPP AP on infra switch connected to 2106 controller in same vlan and it will join your WLC.
On the other hand if you want your APs to be in different vlan than management subnet defined on your controller then you have to configure either DHCP option 43 or make them learn your controller management ip address via DNS.
You can also have a look at this link

Cisco Prime LMS 4.1 - Do access points use up a node count license?
Hi Everyone,
I wish to purchase Cisco Prime LMS 4.1, particularly Cisco part # R-LMS-4.1-500-K9 which support 500 Cisco nodes.
We have about 360 Cisco switches/routers/ASA/FWs/WLCs so the 500 nodes license would seem to suffice for now & for future growth.
We also have about 200 lightweight APs that are managed & monitored by our WLC/WCS/Navigator environment.
According to the device support documentation for LMS, it supports and I assume will auto-discover these APs.
Does that mean these APs will use up node licenses on LMS even though management of the APs is done by WLC/WCS? If so is there an easy way to suppress discovery of APs by LMS so we don’t have to purchase extra node licenses for LMS? Or, does LMS offer additional support features for wireless APs not already offered by WLC/WCS/Navigator?
Just trying to understand how many network node licenses for LMS I have to purchase.
Thanks in advance for your help,
Ian.Thanks but I just heard back from my Cisco SE and he assures me that an AP will NOT use up a license.
I've asked him to verify his answer for me.
Is your answer based on real world expereince (the best there is)? That is, are you running Prime LMS 4.1 and does it indeed use up a license for each light-weight AP it discovers & manages?
Thanks for mentioning options 1-3 but I do not wish to employ any of them. I don't mind buying the additional licenses for APs ... I just need to know if I have to or not.

3702i AP's not Joining WLC - Layer 3 discovery request not received on management VLAN
Hi Guys,
This is a follow up post to this thread: https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/12400481/3702i-not-joint-2504
Have been playing around with my AP's and made sure the time is correct on all the devices ( WLC and Switch). I have also moved the AP's to the same Vlan as the management IP of the WLC.
if I move the AP's to the same Vlan as the WLC they join and are happy, as soon as I move them to a different Vlan they cant join and there time goes back to the default plus they do not seem to save the WLC details to flash but still remember the test names I give them.
it appears that option 43 is working fine as I can see it look for the WLC IP and I have done some trouble shooting on the WLC and it looks like it see's the AP but doesn't except it.
please see below for the boot up of the AP and the WLC logs:

Cisco APs not updating after WLC-update
Hello everyone,
I need to update my 5508 WLCs to a newer software, to support new AP-models.
Started with AIR-CT5500-K9-1-7-0-0-FUS.aes and AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-240-0.aes, everything worked fine. Pre-Downloaded the newer Image to the APs, restarted the WLCs and everything was ok.
Now I tried to update to 7.6.100.0 as well as 7.4.121.0. Both Versions should support my APs, but it doesn't work at all.
Any ideas are highly appreciated.
If you need further output, just let me know.
Regards,
Manuel

Nachricht geändert durch Manuel SporlederHi Scott,
I am not trying to pre-download it anymore, since this doesn't work at all.
If I just restart the controller, the APs are downloading the image telling me "everything is fine", are rebooted and that stated with the old image again.
This is what you can see in the attached log-file:

Regards, Manuel -
I upgraded a controller yesterday 5508 it went from a low code version 6.x to 6.0.196.0 then to 7.0.116.0. However although all the access points joined code 6.0.196.0 they refused to join 7.0.116.0. The aps are all 1242s.
The country codes etc were all fine so I do not understand what was going on.
Any ideas?

1. It doesn't happen to all new APs. When I mean "new", I mean out from a box including APs from RMA.
2. I've seen this in 1240, 1250, 1140. Haven't seen it on a 3500.
3. Here's how it goes ... When the AP, fresh from a box, connects to the networks, sees the WLC/WiSM and downloads the full IOS (OK so far). After the reboot the AP in question loads the new IOS and shows up in the WLC/WiSM. When I check CDP neighbors, NOTHING. What the ... ?
4. Go to the switch and do command "sh cdp neighbor" and what do I get? NOTHING.
5. Check PoE and show that it's IEEE.
For unknown reason, APs in this "trance" shuts off the CDP. I currently have a Cisco TAC Case trying to iron out this "feature". Doesn't appear on the 7.0.96.0 but happens to the newer one. -
So today has been a disaster. I have 11 Cisco Aironet APs connected to a Cisco WLC 4402 running 7.0.235.3. When we lost power to the controller over the weekend I only had 8 come back. In the AP join log three of them were saying"Layer 3 discovery request not received on management VLAN". Mind you they were working before the power went out. So one of my colleagues advised me to shut down the controller, disable the switch ports the AP's are plugged into, restart the controller, and then reenable the ports on the switch. Well now I only have three. The rest get the same error message I mentioned before. I also tried disabled and reenabled the DHCP scope they work on as well. Like I said they were all working before the power went out. Can anyone help?
Nothing is wrong. That message simply means, that there was an LWAPP request and the code the AP is on is CAPWAP. This happens in case you have a WLC on older code, but get/convert one with newer code.
Is the dhcp server for the AP management network in another vlan and you have ip helper-address configured?
How are you doing your Discovery? L2 forwarding, option 43?
I think you may have to upgrade the code on your controller to support your aps... or downgrade the code on the aps manually before attempting the join process with your controller.

APs not joining 5508 on dynamic ports created manualy
Hey all,
i have a problem with our new 5508 wireless controller (7.0.116.0).
Port 1 is the system default "management" (Port 2 is backup). Dynamic AP Management is disabled.
Port 3 is a new dynamic interface "ap-manager 2" with Dynamic AP Management enabled and has a ip in a seperated VLAN which is not routed.
When i am connecting the AP (1260 series) to the "ap-manager 2" interface, then it will not join and i get an error message on the WLC:
*spamApTask1: Mar 05 14:52:12.783: %CAPWAP-3-DISC_INTF_ERR1:
capwap_ac_sm.c:1453 Ignoring discovery request received on non-management
interface (3) from AP
When i am connecting the AP to the "management2 interface, then it is working fine. But i don't want the APs in the Management LAN. I want them in the separated no routed LAN explicit for the APs.
What do i miss here.
Thanks a lot.
Regards
MatthewHmmm...but i found follwoing in the documentation:
The AP-manager interface's IP address must be different from the management interface's IP address and may or may not be on the same subnet as the management interface. However, we recommend that both interfaces be on the same subnet for optimum access point association.
I want the APs in a separated non routed LAN because of security reasons. Why set APs into the management LAN when they only need to communicate with the controller?
But if there is no way to do that, then i need to redesign the plans for the WLAN structure.
Thanks

Ignoring discovery request - AP on dynamic client interface
Hi All,
I have a questing regarding the AP Management Port on the 5508.
At our customers side there are some FAT-APs and we want to migrate them to the controller.
There is no DHCP Service active on the network (security-restriction by our customer) and the FAT-APs and Clients are configured with a static IP.
There is no LAG active everything is on Port 1.
Now after upgrading one AP to lightwight-mode,... he cannot discover his WLC (thats ok, because the Manament Interface is in a different subnet)
So I configured a IP-Helper and the neccesary udp-Port to get the AP joined on the WLC.
But on the Controller I get the following message:
%CAPWAP-3-DISC_INTF_ERR2: Ignoring discovery request received on a
wrong VLAN ([dec]) on interface ([int]) from AP
[hex]:[hex]:[hex]:[hex]:[hex]:[hex]
The wrong VLAN in the message is a dynamic Interface on the Controller for client and the AP is in that Subnet.
It its created as an Dynamic Interface on the WLC (without "Enable Dynamic AP Management")
I hope you can give me a hint. I'm not sure if I should enable "Dynamic AP Management" on that Client Interface.
By the way, the AP can join when i configure the Controller IP via console on it. But that should not be the solution
Thanks &
Best regards,
SimonHi Nicolas,
thanks for your reply.
I know, that this design is not "best practice".
Our customer has a LAN which has to be completly redesigned.
They use very huge subnets for their different production segments (255.255.240.0) and everything is in there.
The Autonomous AP Installation is in one of these huge network segments where the APs and the clients are in the same subnet..
Thats the background why this szenario is created.
I know that this design is absolutly unsatisfactory.
But thats the fact and I have to deal with this.
The helper is the WLCs Management Adress.
So what about the "ignoring discovery request" message.
Is there some possibility to get it work this way or is the only way to upgrade the APs via Console to get them to the controller.
I know the best way would be to get the APs in a new different subnet,...

Simon -
Discovery request received on wrong VLAN
I am setting up a new 4404 with my existing WLAN. I have a combo for 1100 and 1200 APs, on two different VLANs, with WDS on each VLAN and a WLSE. One of the VLANs is on the same subnet was the WLC management port. The other WLAN VLAN is not. I am able to join the VLAN on the same subnet to my WLC but when I convert one of my auto APs on the other VLAN, it converts but never joins my WLC. If I run a debug on the WLC I get the following.
Fri Aug 1 12:38:56 2008: 00:17:0f:37:68:60 Received LWAPP DISCOVERY REQUEST from AP 00:17:0f:37:68:60 to ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff on port '1'
Fri Aug 1 12:38:56 2008: Discovery Request received on wrong VLAN '160' on interface '1', management VLAN = '0' - in L3 mode, dropping the packet.
My WLC is on code 5.0.148. All of my APs have static IP addresses. I have setup DNS but NOT DHCP since all of them have static IP and that option 42 still confuses me. Any thoughts? My 4506 is set to trunk the port the WLC is on. I even tried to only apply the two VLANs to that port. My WLC can ping the IP of the AP on the different VLAN and my AP can ping the WLC.You need to configure the native vlan on the trunk port to vlan 160. Looks like the packet is being tagged as vlan 60 and your management interface is set to '0' which is untagged.

Hi guys,
I am in the process of configuring a WLC and got stuck due to APs are not joining the WLC.
I have configure DHCP server on the Gateway router and the WLC management interface is pointing to the Gateway as DHCP Server.
I have multiple Dynamic interfaces configured on the WLC and Interface group has been configured and mapped to Management Interface.
For each WLAN, a separate DHCP pool has been created on the router.
LAG has been configured and working fine. Connectivity works fine in the network and I can ping all devices and vlans from WLC.
Now, the APs are not joining the WLC. The error I am getting
" 44:03:a7:f1:b4:40 Received a Discovery Request from 44:03:A7:F1:B4:40 via IP broadcast address but the source IP address (10.xx.xx.xx) is not in any of the configured subnets. Dropping it "
Some one help me troubleshooting this issue with DHCP IP Assignment.
Thanks,
CJIf you are using Broadcast method to discover WLC to AP then you need to ensure following is correctly configured.
1. Unders the switch SVI defined for AP-management (10.38.11.x) you have to configure "ip helper-address "
2. In switch global config "ip forward-protocol udp 5246"
Refer this for more detail
http://mrncciew.com/2013/05/04/wlc-discovery-via-broadcast/
There are other methods available as well (static, DNS, DHCP option 43) for the WLC discovery purpose. To verify there is no configuration issues at WLC end, you can simply configure the WLC details on AP statically & check wether AP get register to WLC. To do this you can enter following CLI commands on AP console priviledge mode.
debug capwap console cli
capwap ap ip address 10.38.11.x 255.255.255.x
capwap ap ip default-gateway 10.38.11.y
capwap ap controller ip address
In this way your AP should get registered to WLC (if no config issue at WLC end). Refer this for more detail
http://mrncciew.com/2013/03/17/ap-registration/
If you have so many APs, then as Steve pointed configuring DHCP-Option 43 would be a good option

Hello community,
I hope you can help me with my problem.
I have a vWLC Firmware version: 7.4.121.0, I have also Aironet 1700Aps
I have successfully configured wlc with service and management interface. In the management network I can ping the vWLC managenemt interface as well the APs in this network. The firewall is also the DHCP Server for the management network. (It is working because APs get an IP address) The problem is the APs are not joining the vWLC. This is my first time I use WLC and APs. So they are completely new and not used before.
Here is the debug output of vWLC:

Sadly I don`t have a debuging cable for the APs. Therefore I have no debuging output of the APs. (It is ordered ;-) )
But I hope the output of the APs is right now not important to solve this problem.
Thank you
//EDIT
On the firewall are no ports blockedOkay I upgraded the vWLC to 8.0.110.0.
I looked in the event log of the vWLC. It was successfully discovered and also the new image version was send to the AP.
Sadly the Ap does not join to the vWLC.

//SOLUTION -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found something on the internet, but for all people having also this problem here is the solution:
Change the country of your vWLC. Right now I am in China, so I changed it and then it was working flawlessly :-)
Step 1
Disable the 802.11 networks as follows:
Choose Wireless > 802.11a/n > Network.
Unselect the 802.11a Network Status check box.
Click Apply.
Choose Wireless > 802.11a/n > Network.
Unselect the 802.11b/g Network Status check box.
Click Apply.
Step 2
Choose Wireless > Country to open the Country page.
Thank you all for your help :-)

Lms 4.2 Cannot enable End Host Discovery on Trunk
Hi...
I have noticed that our LMS does not collect any information about wireless users connected to autonomous access points, although I can see the mac address of the wireless users on the switch (2960) Trunk port connecting to the AP via CLI. I can also get the IP address from the core switch. Even after selecting 'Perform Data Collection' on the AP in the topology, the Wireless End hosts report remains blank.
I am trying to enable the option 'End host Discovery on Selected Trunks' in the 'Acquisition configuration in Trunk' menu and after selecting the switch where the AP resides and clicking 'show Trunk' I get the message 'there are no trunks in the device(s) selected', although there are several trunk ports on this switch, other than the one connecting to the AP. The switch and the AP are managed by LMS. We are facing this problem with all Autonomus APs. We do not use WLSE. Is there something missing to discover these Wireless hosts ?
All help is appreciatedIs it safe to set UTGetVlansWithUserPorts=0 in the NMSROOT/campus/etc/cwsi/ut.properties ? I have seen this in a previous discussion, but thath was related to LMS 3.1, not 4.2

Hi guys, i'll try to explain our trouble as best as i can:
Im trying to do some basic scenario here. Picture this: One L3 Switch connecting a 4402 Controller, 3 Administrative Vlans for APs (63, 93 and 127) and 3 Vlans for clients (one for each Administrative vlan, 16, 64 and 95 respectively). Also, in one of the administrative vlans (63) lives the Management and AP Manager interfaces of the controller. The L3 Switch does the DHCP business also, including giving the Controller IP (option 43).
Here is the deal: When i try to connect one LWAP AP in to the same VLAN as the controller (63) it does gets an IP address of the segment and also gets the Controller IP. BUT, it cannot reach the Controller Management interface, not by ping nor by registering. (i connected a laptop to chek this behavior and it cant ping the Management Interface either)
Then, if i connect the same AP to another VLAN (say.. 93)it will get an IP address of the segment, IP of the controller and it will reach the Controller by means of PING and also discovery request/discovery response. BUT, it wont register with the controller. In both cases, the L3 switch can ping just fine the APs and the Management Interface.
After sniffing little bit I can see that the AP does in fact send the Join request message to the AP Manager interface of the Controller, but it wont get an answer. Then, in the CLI of the Controller (debug lwapp events enable) i can see that the controller does recive the discovery request and send the discovery response messages, but never sees the join request frome the AP.
Configs of the switch and controller attached.
Also, i checked the date of the controller and its up to date, the certificates of the APs should be fine, they will expire in 2 o 3 more years.
Oh, and the Controller its not directly connected to the Switch, its connected to another 3500 switch using a GBIC, but its just used as a media converter... after that switch its connected to a trunk in the L3 Switch.. and yes, the Switch with the controller has all the needed vlans configured so they can be seen on the trunks.
Any help would be greately appretiated.Hi again... guess what? I came to work today, turned on all the equipment.. and it works! God knows why but now the APs can register. For your information I did reset the devices before, so i dont know what happened.
Anyway there is still a problem. If the APs are in the same VLAN as the controller, they cant see it. And this goes for every device, if I have 2 APs and one laptop in the same vlan they cant ping each other but can ping their GW. Any comments on this?
Thanks in advance! -
RD (Rogue Detector) or RLDP (Rogue Location Discovery Protocol)
Hi all,
Cisco documentaion states that there are two ways for detecting Rogues.
Rogue Detector Access Point
You can make an AP operate as a rogue detector, which allows it to be placed on a trunk port so that it can hear all wired-side connected VLANs. It proceeds to find the client on the wired subnet on all the VLANs. The rogue detector AP listens for Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) packets in order to determine the Layer 2 addresses of identified rogue clients or rogue APs sent by the controller. If a Layer 2 address that matches is found, the controller generates an alarm that identifies the rogue AP or client as a threat. This alarm indicates that the rogue was seen on the wired network.
Rogue Location Discovery Protocol (RLDP)
RLDP is an active approach, which is used when rogue AP has no authentication (Open Authentication) configured. This mode, which is disabled by default, instructs an active AP to move to the rogue channel and connect to the rogue as a client. During this time, the active AP sends deauthentication messages to all connected clients and then shuts down the radio interface. Then, it will associate to the rogue AP as a client.
The AP then tries to obtain an IP address from the rogue AP and forwards a User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packet (port 6352) that contains the local AP and rogue connection information to the controller through the rogue AP. If the controller receives this packet, the alarm is set to notify the network administrator that a rogue AP was discovered on the wired network with the RLDP feature.
So how do you turn on the latter (RLDP)?
Many thx indeed
Ken
The following modes of operations exist:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps430/products_qanda_item09186a00806a4da3.shtml
Q. What are the different modes in which a lightweight access point (LAP) can operate?
A. An LAP can operate in any of these modes:
•Local mode—This is the default mode of operation. When an LAP is placed into local mode, the AP will transmit on the normally assigned channel. However, the AP also monitors all other channels in the band over a period of 180 seconds to scan each of the other channels for 60ms during the non-transmit time. During this time, the AP performs noise floor measurements, measures interference, and scans for IDS events.
•REAP mode—Remote Edge Access Point (REAP) mode enables an LAP to reside across a WAN link and still be able to communicate with the WLC and provide the functionality of a regular LAP. REAP mode is supported only on the 1030 LAPs.
•H-REAP Mode— H-REAP is a wireless solution for branch office and remote office deployments. H-REAP enables customers to configure and control access points (APs) in a branch or remote office from the corporate office through a WAN link without the need to deploy a controller in each office. H-REAPs can switch client data traffic locally and perform client authentication locally when the connection to the controller is lost. When connected to the controller, H-REAPs can also tunnel traffic back to the controller.
•Monitor mode—Monitor mode is a feature designed to allow specified LWAPP-enabled APs to exclude themselves from handling data traffic between clients and the infrastructure. They instead act as dedicated sensors for location based services (LBS), rogue access point detection, and intrusion detection (IDS). When APs are in Monitor mode they cannot serve clients and continuously cycle through all configured channels listening to each channel for approximately 60 ms.
Note: From the controller release 5.0, LWAPPs can also be configured in Location Optimized Monitor Mode (LOMM), which optimizes the monitoring and location calculation of RFID tags. For more information on this mode, refer to Cisco Unified Wireless Network Software Release 5.0.
Note: With controller release 5.2, the Location Optimized Monitor Mode (LOMM) section has been renamed Tracking Optimization, and the LOMM Enabled drop-down box has been renamed Enable Tracking Optimization.
Note: For more information on how to configure Tracking Optimization, read the Optimizing RFID Tracking on Access Points section.
•Rogue detector mode—LAPs that operate in Rogue Detector mode monitor the rogue APs. They do not transmit or contain rogue APs. The idea is that the rogue detector should be able to see all the VLANs in the network since rogue APs can be connected to any of the VLANs in the network (thus we connect it to a trunk port). The switch sends all the rogue AP/Client MAC address lists to the Rogue Detector (RD). The RD then forwards those up to the WLC in order to compare with the MACs of clients that the WLC APs have heard over the air. If MACs match, then the WLC knows the rogue AP to which those clients are connected is on the wired network.
•Sniffer mode—An LWAPP that operates in Sniffer mode functions as a sniffer and captures and forwards all the packets on a particular channel to a remote machine that runs Airopeek. These packets contain information on timestamp, signal strength, packet size and so on. The Sniffer feature can be enabled only if you run Airopeek, which is a third-party network analyzer software that supports decoding of data packets.
•Bridge Mode— Bridge mode is used when the access points are setup in a mesh environment and used to bridge between each other.Found this in another post here on the forum :
There are 3 ways to detect rogue Aps:
1. Ap in monitor mode (sits and scans all channels. Can detect rogue Aps under 30 seconds
2. RLDP (done passively from normal Aps. Can take up to 15 minutes to detect rogue AP)
3. Rogue Detector (looks for broadcast packets from wireless clients on wired network)
For case number 2, a normal AP would be one in local or h-reap connected mode that normally have clients attached, but that are going off channel occasionally to scan for rogues / noise. The process of trying to validate that there is a network attached rogue (RDLP enabled) could likely be service interrupting depending on your AP layout.

Hi,
I have successfully connected my WLC 2500 controller with 20 light weight Access points 1262N.
I have used the internal DHCP server option in the controller for the AP's and client.
Port 1 of the WLC is trunked with the switch 2960. All is working fine
The problem comes when I remove the Ethernet cable from the management interface and restart the WLC. The AP's don't come back. If I don't restart the WLC the AP's remain.
On the other hand, when I leave the Ethernet cable connected to the management port with my pc and then reboot the WLC, the AP's appear.
Seems like whenever im not physically connected to the management port of the WLC and restart it, the AP's don't come back. The only way to make them come back again is to connect my PC to the management port.
Please help me. What seems to be the problem here ?
Best Regards,Hi,
All 20 Pc;s are in one area connected to the same AP im assuming. The PC;s are stationary, so didnt check for roaming, but generally my laptop connectivity is fine while roaming. It rarely disconnects but users have complained that it did disconncect a few times.
