Distorted Screen e350 Chipset Catalyst Drivers

Hi All,
I had a go at loading Arch on my e350 based system yesterday with the idea of having a minimal environment running XBMC, VirtualBox and an Apache server. After a successful install I attempted to install the proprietary Catalyst drivers via the AUR which appeared to  go OK. However after running 'aticonfig --initial' and then running startx I was greeted by a less than visually impressive display. When moving the cursor or even typing the screen distorts almost like a tear, I thought that this might be a quirk of running a minimal xterm interface so I then tried to install XBMC.
XBMC suffered from the same distortion/tearing as xterm but additionally the screen resolution was too low to actually cover the whole screen even though XBMC was purportedly outputting at 1080p. When viewing the system info section of XBMC the CPU utilization seemed all over the place and in addition things like CPU and GPU temp just weren't available. This leads me to believe that the catalyst drivers aren't working even though the fglrx modules are loaded and XBMC was able to do sound over HDMI - which I thought was only available through the catalyst drivers? I'm really not sure what to do because there appears to be no way to debug the issue. I've tried re installing the catalyst drivers multiple times now.
The only perhaps useful bit of information was an error that was displayed when ending the x session, something about the display with device id not being found.
I'd really appreciate any help anyone can provide....
Thanks in advance.
BTW. Bravo on the captcha system on the registration page - never seen one like that before!

Yes I've just tried enabling the tear free setting and no difference. I've also tried the OSS drivers (now vdpau is supported) which seem to give a much better result (in xterm at least). Unfortunately XBMC doesn't even load up with those drivers it just flashes black back and forth between the terminal. It's a nightmare - really appreciate any help about now.

  • HOW TO: Install LATEST ATI CATALYST drivers

So ATI/AMD doesn't consistently update the "BootCamp" drivers and as a gamer I want utmost performance out of what I have (of course without OCing). Therefore, I went searching for a solution and found it and I will explain it here, step by step. Forgive me if this has already been posted. Note that I did this in XP and NOT Vista.
    1. Download the latest CATALYST drivers from here:
    http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=xp/radeonx-xp
    2. Open the driver software as if you were going to install it and let it extract to its default directory. Take note of what that directory is as you will need to know that file path for later. Once it extracts it will move on to an installation. Stop/cancel the installation the first chance you get.
    3. REMOVE your currently installed ATI drivers. There are two ways to do this:
-1. If you downloaded the actually CATALYST Software Suite, there will be a program in the folder to where it extracted called "AtiCimUn" that will remove your drivers.
-2. Google "remove ATI drivers" and I think it's the first link that tells you a detailed step by step method of removing the drivers.
    4. Restart after successfully removing the drivers.
    5. Download MobilityModder here: http://www.driverheaven.net/modtool.php
-If you scroll closer to the bottom of that page, there will be a download link AND instructions for the PROPER method of installing MobilityModder.
    6. Run MobilityModder
    7. Browse to the directory where the drivers are installed.
    8. Click "Modify"
    9. When the modification is complete, close MobilityModder and Right Click on "My Computer" then click on Properties
    10. Click the "Hardware" tab
    11. Click on Device Manager
    12. At least one device should have a yellow circle with a black question mark in it. For me, Windows saw it as a "VGA Controller". Right click it and click "Update Drivers"
    13. It will ask you some stuff about if you want Windows Update to look for drivers, say "No not this time" and click next
    14. Select "Install from a list or specific location{Advanced) and click next
    15. Select "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install"
    16. Click on the "Have Disk" button
    17. Browse to the folder where the ATI drivers were extracted to (MobilityModder will have rewritten the modified files to the same location)
    18. The specific file you are looking for is a Configuration file whose icon looks like a white notepad with a yellowish cog that has some metal rod going through it. Click on it and click "open"
    19. At this point Windows should recognize which card you have specifically, if not, it will have the entire list of cards that driver can update. If you run into that, just find it in the list.
    20. Let windows copy the files, if it tells you that the drivers are not digitally signed, say "continue anyway". It's just an effect of the MobilityModder modifying the files and since it doesn't have a certificate, it's not considered signed.
    21. When it's done click finish.
    22. Restart
    23. Happy new drivers
I'm thinking you might be able to skip the MobilityModder part and just skip straight to directing Windows right to where the drivers are instead of having to mod the files. I'm not sure if it works because I haven't done it but you're welcome to try. If it doesn't work it just means you have to use MobilityModder.
    I hope this helps.

Update: After using the method described above the drivers did install successfully however, when I loaded some games I noticed that they did not take up the whole screen. No amount of changing the resolution solved the problem.
So I completely removed the drivers and loaded unmodified drivers. I had to find my x1600 from the list and there were actually two but I just took the first one. I let Windows copy the files after warning that it can't confirm they were for my hardware. After a restart I tried my games again and they were taking up the whole screen as they did when I had BootCamps outdated drivers.
So I can say that you CAN skip steps 5-9 (the steps for the mobility modding). You'll just have to find your drivers and some of them do show up multiple times. I'm probably going to try the other x1600 listing just to see what happens. I'm not sure if there's a difference between the same listings (mine was Radeon x1600 followed by another Radeon x1600) but I'm assuming there is or else ATI would put so many >.<

  • How can I safely and painlessly downgrade catalyst drivers?

The latest version of catalyst is 11.8 and is horrible for me. For example, the computer screen does not turn on after going to sleep (a problem I had with 11.4 as well), when running applications from Terminal I'm constantly getting X errors, and now the latest is that I can't make boxee compile at all, complaining about missing lGL (I've googled around and people suggest reinstalling catalyst or installing mesa).
Disclaimer: I need catalyst drivers and not FOSS ones because of my hardware.
So the question is how would I go about downgrading from 11.8 to 11.7 as painlessly as possible?

Yes and I know how to generally downgrade packages, but catalyst is specific in that it's from AUR, it has many scripts attached to it, there is a kernel module, and my past experiences with trying to downgrade it resulted in a screwed up system (following the wiki)

  • [SOLVED] Rebuild catalyst drivers automatically if kernel updated?

    Hi
I use the catalyst proprietary drivers, and I read on the catalyst wiki page that it is possible to automatically rebuild (?) the drivers if the kernel was updated, to prevent the drivers not working on reboot. However, the wiki makes absolutely no sense to me.
I need help installing catalyst_daemon, because I think that catalyst_daemon is the daemon that checks if a rebuild needs to be done. However, simply entering:
    pacman -S catalyst-daemon
does nothing, because it complains that catalyst and catalyst-daemon are in conflict.
What do I need to install, and how do I need to configure it, so that fglrx or the catalyst drivers are automatically rebuilt so that I don't get a black screen upon rebooting.
    Thanks in advance

Oh, that sounds good. If I were to use catalyst-hook, would I simply install catalyst-hook? Do I need to add anything else?
EDIT: I just noticed that catalyst-hook also conflicts with catalyst. I am assuming that is for the same reason as you just said, so I am assuming I would remove catalyst to make way for catalyst-hook

  • NEW VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers for KT4AV BAD

Ok heres the problem. I have a KT4AV-L motherboard and I wanted to update the VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers. While I was installing it and when it reached 100%, the screen went black and wouldn't boot back up. I had to hit the restart button to reboot Windows again. Doesn't anyone also have this problem with the new VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers V4.51 on the KT4AV motherboard?

I haven't heard of this, but I know if not installing under Safe Mode the driver install often hang at the last percent.

  • X fails with new catalyst drivers

I'm running 64bit arch and i just upgraded to the new catalyst drivers from AUR (9.4). When I try to run xorg now, it fails (screen just goes black and I can't switch to any of the vcs or kill X). The X log file says that it can't load the glx module because it doesn't exist. I'm not entirely clear on modules and how they work, but what should I do to try and get X working?
    Gratias vobi ago!

I'm running a Radeon HD 4870 x2. I've been trying some things, and now I dont get the missing glx error. I do get these errors:
(EE) Failed to load module "dri2" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "record" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) fglrx(0): Unknown EDID version 0
Though it appears that X keeps going past all three of these. Here's my entire log: http://pastebin.com/f5153ff39 . Here's the xorg.conf file aticonfig generated with the unused device, monitor, and screen sections commented out: http://pastebin.com/f1e765d83 .
Any help on where to go next would really be appreciated, I've been at this for over a day now.
jun, I think the wiki discourages getting the drivers from the amd site directly, though given the success (or lack thereof) I'm having with the AUR drivers, I can't say (personally) that they're any better.

  • System just reboots over and over after VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers installed

After installing the (2005-1-14) VIA Chipset 4in1 Drivers on my K7T Turbo Ver 3 system (Windows/2000 SP4, Award BIOS 3.6) I got the following blue screen:
    *** STOP:  0x0000007B (0xF681F84C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE
If this is the first time you've seen this  Stop error screen, restart your computer.  If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check for viruses on your computer.  Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers.  Check you hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.  Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.
Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop errors.
    1.  I logged into Windows/2000 via "Safe Mode", got the same error above.
    2.  I then rebooted with the Windows/2000 cd, selected Repair.  Went through the Repair process, had the emergency disk.  Still got the above blue screen after rebooting.
    3.  I then rebooted again in "Safe Mode", got the blue screen error.
    4.  I then rebooted again in "Safe Mode with Networking". got the blue screen error.
    5.  I then rebooted with the Windows/2000 cd, selected Repair.  Went through the Repair process and DID NOT use the emergency disk.  This time the system got to the Windows logo screen (before log in prompt) and then reboots over and over.  No blue screen.
    6.  On next reboot, I hit F8 for "Safe Mode".  "Starting Windows ..."  appears on screen, then system reboots over and over.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jim

To get the pc to stop rebooting over and over, I ran chkdsk /R.
Next, I booted with the Windows/2000 CD and selected to Repair.
I tried just doing the Repair, but that did not work.
I tried to log in after doing the chkdsk /R and that did not work.
I then get the blue screen when trying to login to W2K, but was able to login "Safe Mode".
I removed the VIA drivers using Device Manager:
    VIA Bus Master IDE Controller,
    VIA CPU to AGP Controller,
VIA Tech PCI to ISA bridge,
    VIA Tech Power Manager controller.
I then clicked on the "Scan for hardware changes" icon.  This added back drivers.  Rebooted.  Got the blue screen with errors in my first posting.
This is a little progress since the machine is not stuck in a "reboot loop" like above and I can log in to "Safe Mode".
Does anyone think that upgrading from Windows/2000 to WindowsXP will fix this? (Does WindowsXP have these drivers in pnp?)
    Thanks,
    Jim

  • Z77A-G43 boot problem with catalyst drivers

    Hi all,
I upgraded my pc this weekend. I have ZH77A-G43 with 3*4GB RAM and ATI HD7850 gfx card.
A new SATA HDD and a fresh windows7 install.
All goes well until I install catalyst drivers. After that, windows will not boot anymore. I can see 'Starting Windows' and after that the screen goes black and pc stops responding.
n safe mode, everything works fine again.
Do the catalyst drivers cause problems on this mobo?

Never mind see the beta bios release notes:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=161593.msg1197504#msg1197504
    Quote
    01.Fix VTX3D Radeon HD 7850 1GB X-Edition not display issue.
(Add below solution from E7751IMS.H52 and E7751IMS.H53:
Fix PCIE GEN3 display card issue.
Fix 'Integrated Graphics Share Memory' and 'DVMT Memory' item show incorrect.)
Seems as though that matches up nicely to our problem, so use the beta bios instead.

  • Probs with ATI Catalysts Drivers

I’m currently using ATI Catalyst Drivers 6.14.10.6404 (3.9) for my ATI Radeon 9600xt.
If I upgrade to the latest ATI or Omega Drivers (4.7 I think), my card crashes and is very unstable.
    my current graphics settings are:
    enabled VPU recover
    fast write is on
    AGPx8
Why does 3.9 work and 4.7 not work, I have only had this problem since changing to this board.
    Any help appreciated.

Well I hope it works for you engrrowl!  I was installing a slipstreamed version of XP with SP2.  But that sure didn't help me.  I would randomly have my screen corrupt with my 9700.  And that stupid card has given me headaches since I got an LCD.  So driver incompatibility used to make my screen go black all the time.  It would then revert to normal (maybe!).  But there were many times I had to shutdown by the keyboard and disconnect the DVI cable to get it to work again.  And the LCD is a Samsung so it's not cheap.
I broke down the other night and when I had to reinstall WinXP from scratch I reverted to an older GF4.  This morning I ordered a Geforce 6800, and it will "upgrade" fine.  But if I tried to go from an ATI to an Nvidia I would have had to reload my OS again.    So it worked out for me.
But it's strange that switching video cards solved all my "issues".  That and the fact that I've never really like ATI's drivers means I will never get another of their cards.

  • Audigy 4 gives blue screen during install of drivers on Windows XP SP3

FAudigy 4 gives blue screen during install of drivers on Windows XP SP3! Specs
    Asus a8n-sli
    GB RAM
    6600 GT
    Audigy 4
    LC Power 550 W PSU
I put in the installation CD that comes with the card. I want to install everything (full install), and mid-install I get a blue screen.
I then uninstalled everything and tried only to install the updated drivers from the website in safe-mode and still a blue screen. Should I get the dump file and send it to Creative?
How do get this card to work like it should? I also have a remote control that came together with the card.
Im currently using the onboard AC97 Realtek ALC850 soundcard.
Whats the whole procedure to make this work? Detailed please. How do I eliminate all traces of the audigy on my PC?

Re: Audigy 4 gives blue screen during install of drivers on Windows XP SP38 Perhaps you'd want to read this old thread of mine about my misadventures with the same exact card you are trying to use. IMHO that card was not worth the time and money I spent on it (even even less the time and money it caused me to spend afterwards to repair the damage it caused.

  • [Solved]Installed AMD Catalyst drivers. Are they activated?

This must be a really stupid question.
I have installed the Catalyst drivers from the repo, but in KinfoCenter I'm getting something else:
It's not a VMware installation, it's alongside Windows.
So, am I using the Catalyst drivers or not?
    Thanks.

I'm sorry but the image is just 125KB, and that's not much at all, even for a slow connection.
Anyways, is there a bug in KinfoCenter? How does it read those values? I would like to try them manually. Thanks

  • Catalyst drivers and 3D games. Help me!

I just saw that Catalyst drivers were updated to support the new Xorg.... nice.
So, I do a yaourt catalyst. All was fine until I rebooted.
Then I saw MineCraft won't run! Odd... it was complaining about LibGL.
    Then launched LinCity-NG... same thing.
    Hmm...
So I do pacman -Syu and Libgl is for download... but so is ati-drv.
I don't want to run open source drivers since they are too slow.
    My issues:
    1. How can I tell if I'm running the catalyst drivers?
    2. aticonfig can't be found, what's wrong?
    3. How do I get Libgl back but not install the open source drivers?

Ignore my first post, I now have more trouble.
fglrx isn't building at all while I removed the ati-dri drivers. I'm now running the VESA drivers.

  • Zen X-Fi 16GB Distorted Screen

Zen X-Fi 6GB Distorted Screen? Hello,
I purchased a 6GB Zen X-Fi about 2-3 weeks ago. Upon recieving it, I unpackaged it, loaded the software, and began transferring music. After disconnecting it from my computer, I went to turn the device on, and the screen was completely distorted (white lines and other various colors all over it). I kept messing with the buttons, tried restarting it, etc. with no luck. Sound still functions but I cannot see the menu at all. When the player is turned off, I see a black smudge underneath the glass.
So, I sent it back to the retailer (newegg) and they claim it was physically damaged and cannot give me a refund.
This is not my first Creative product, I also own a Zen Vision:M 30GB, as well as a? X-Fi XtremeMusic soundcard. I have been pleased thus far by creative, and I am curious as to if i am able to recieve a replacement, or if anyone else has experienced this.
    Thank you for any help,
    Andrew

    Hi Andrew,
Could you log a case with Support? They should be able to assist you further.

  • [SOLVED] HOW to install CATALYST drivers?

I decided that its time for me to install some catalyst drivers for my ATI RADEON 3200 card, I've found them in AUR, after I made a package I tried to install but this is what I saw:
    pacman -U catalyst-utils-11.5-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    resolving dependencies...
    looking for inter-conflicts...
:: catalyst-utils and libgl are in conflict. Remove libgl? [y/N] y
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: ati-dri: requires libgl=7.10.2
My libgl was 7.10.2-2 version, so it should be ok, but why pacman says its in conflict and then it says that this package is needed? lol! this is very amusing to say the least.

I followed these instructions for the stock kernel:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Catalyst
Had to remove ati-dri xf86-video-ati and libgl
It may be worth printing the page first, I have successfully
installed, so hope you can too.

  • [sovled] Cant get catalyst drivers to compile...need older xorg

My house mates and I are trying to set up a media center.  The one in charge of buying the hardware (foolishly) went for ATI.  Without the catalyst drivers we cannot get hdmi to work properly.  What sucks is that the catalyst drivers will not compile with the latest xorg.  Does anyone have copies of an older version or know how we can easily get it?  We need xorg111.  I love arch, and really don't want to switch this box to another distro just so we can get the hardware working.
