Distributed Portal - Firewall - Visibroker Gatekeeper

Environment:
Distributed portal configuration where the mid-tier is outside the firewall and infrastructure is inside the firewall.
Question :
Can we use Visibroker Gatekeeper (one which comes with Discoverer 4i) so that we do not have to open numerous ports on the firewall. This saves us from opening all the ports listed in portslist.ini (if not modified after installation). The expected result is mid-tier will communicate with Gatekeeper for all the communication to Infrastructure and the firewall will be opened only for gatekeeper port.
Please contribute any other suggestions / methods that might help to move towards this end.

Thanks for the prompt reply and I can understand why my questions sound slightly confusing as the scenario is not easy to explain in this medium.
What we currently have is 2 portal 'environments', one running internally and another running on another network but which is linked to our own. What we are exploring is whether we can consolidate this into a single environment.
We need to maintain at least one portal server in the other network, which is effectively a DMZ as you imply, for non technical reasons primarily. But our understanding is that this will need to talk back to the portal database which is on our internal network behind a firewall hence the query about firewall ports.
This 'remote' portal also currently hosts a Collab server so we were wondering if their was benefit in keeping a collab server 'local' to the remote users to avoid network traffic. From your reply I conclude this might not be sensible, or even possible, so perhaps we need to migrate these Collab objects back into the internal portal's collab environment and let the remote sites users access it from there.
If this is the case then for improved availability we would probably want to consider Clustering Collab so are you aware of any reference docs on this side of things?

Distributed Portal Environment Query

We currently have a centralised G6 portal environment in which we have a single Portal server and another hosting Collab.
We have a requirement which might lead to us having to provide another portal server and collab server at one of our remote sites, although in another domain, that as a result will extend the reach of our current portal. The portal and collab databases would remain at the central location so these remote 'services' would need access back to them we assume. Currently there is also a Firewall on the WAN between these 2 sites.
We have tried to find other articles on distributed Portal configurations to see if this is possible but have not really come up with anything so I am hoping other users in this forum might help.
The main points we are trying to understand initially are:
1) Firstly can you distribute portal &/or Collab servers in this way?
2) What ports would the firewall need to allow for the remote Portal server to talk back to the central SQL*Server database.
3) Can you distribute Collab Server across 2 servers in this way and if so what do they need to talk back to the central database. The requirement is to be able to share the projects across the 2 collab servers so that users connecting to the central server can collaborate with those connecting to the remote server.
4) We are assuming that authentication from the remote site into the central AD domain will be OK as we can host the AD AWS centrally.

Visibroker gatekeeper will not start in SSL mode on Linux

Has anyone succesfully configured the Visibroker Gatekeeper with SSL on a Linux Platform?
All of the installations of 9iAS 1.0.2.2.1 I've performed on a Linux platform install the shared library "libvbj30ssl.so" in the $806_HOME/vbroker/bin directory with a 0-byte size. Unfortunately, this shared object library is required to allow the Gatekeeper to start in SSL mode. Furthermore, I checked the Borland website and learned that the Visibroker SSL pack does not support the Linux platform (yet). So my question to Oracle is "Do you REALLY support the configuration of Discoverer Plus w/SSL on Linux"? If so, what Borland Visibroker components are you using and why is the shared object library I speak of installed with a 0-byte size? Is this a simple error in the compilation of the shared object library during installation or did you guys purposely zero out the libvbj30ssl.so shared object library to simplify your port from Solaris to Linux?

Central or distributed portal development team?

In my company's current environment, all portal development work is done by one team that focuses only on Portal.
I have been asked to find a way for other development teams to do development in the Portal.
I am a bit uncomfortable with this for many reasons and wanted to get some feedback on how others handle it.
Do you have one portal development team?
Do you have developers distributed among othe teams with one team doing only administration?
Any other models?
Any feedback would be appreciated.

It is good to have administration team and developers team.
You can restrict developers to only development activities . By doing so only adminstrators will have full control on portal related . You can make them responsible for portal related.
But communication / cooperation between development teams and administrators should be fast .

Portal Forms are not displayed in the new migrated environment.

We have a distributed Portal environment. Application server and Portal Repository running on one system(System1) and one more portal repository and portal components existing in anothor system(System2). Through DAD we connect to System2 and access the componets. Recently we have done a migration.The Database along the Portal Repository in system2 was migrated to a new server. For this we have edited the DAD and made the necessary changes. But after the migration, the Forms residing in migrated portal repository(System2) are not getting dispayed.The rest of the things(Reports, Pages, Links,LOVs etc..) are working fine. The forms are not getting displayed in the pages where it's added. When forms are run from RUN link in Develop Tab it's showing ERROR but not the cause of the error. Will anyone tell what changes I have to do to make the Forms work?

This feature was indeed removed. R&D felt like it caused more confusion than benefit, and I agree. I do apologize to you and others who liked the feature that has now disappeared. When DIAdem 9.0 released the custom properties in the Data Portal showed their data types, but that feature was also removed in favor of simplicity. I often miss that feature, but it's for the greater good.

I have been asked by a client to investigate how Portal can handle many users.
The number in question is approx 5000 with monthly access peaks where most of them want access simultaneously.
What kind of problems should we anticipate? Will Apache be able to handle this? Must Portal be designed in any specific way?
I know the question is wage but any experiences from high loads are welcome.

Take a look at the scalability white papers for 3.0.9 available on http://portalcenter.oracle.com.
They have detailed calculations for sizing Portal, and also give you my.oracle.com as an example of
a high volume Portal site.
Also, don't forget to read up on distributed Portal architecture.

Portal to Portal Federated Search

Hi All,
There is probably a really simple answer to this but I'm having difficulties seeing it at the moment. As you can see from the title I'm trying to configure a federated search to search for documents within another portal instance. I've read the admin guide, online help & various discussion and yet I'm still none the wiser.
I understand that when you install the portal (v5.0.4) you get an incoming federated search for free. This allows someobdy to search as guest user. What I also assume is that on the portal which will be doing the search I need to set up a Outgoing federated search. Is this correct? If so then no problem but the question is that this needs to be based on a Web service. The documentation points to the EDK search API to develope this and hence the problem. I'm not familar with search web services so not sure what I should be aiming to return? Or infact anything that should be contained.
I'm developing in Java and have looked at the 2 examples but still feel lost. Can anyone point me in the right direction or further explain what I should be trying to achieve and how to get there.

2. By default, the search for rooms, for example, in the room directory, in the room list, in room administration, or in the room relations manager, is performed using the SAP search engine Search and Classification (TREX). If you deactivate the TREX search for rooms or you have not installed TREX with the portal, the system switches automatically to the Content Management search function (CM search).

Outgoing emails contain firewall WAN IP in headers instead of dedicated Exchange IPs

Hi All,
I have 2 CAS/HT Servers configured viz Microsoft Load Balancer and 2 Mailbox Servers. I have configured 1:1 NAT on my Firewall pointing to NLB Virtual IP.
WAN IP: xx.xxx.xx.80
Exchange IP: xx.xxx.xx.81
There is no problem with incoming packets which works perfectly but, my outgoing email packets are going through firewall IP (xx.xxx.xx.80) and not exchange IPs (xx.xxx.xx.81). I can see this firewall IP in the email headers.
What is it that I need to correct on my cisco to make sure all packets are going through my Exchange IPs?. One method I think is to create an outside dynamic NAT rule with source IPs of my 2 CAS/HT Servers & NLB IP which will point destination to my
Exchange public IP but then I start thinking what is the point of having NLB configured? Also, will not the packets get distributed
by firewall to select any host from the pool of 3 source IPs (2 CAS/HT & NLB)? Is there a method to fix incoming packets to one host only?

Well, although this would seem to be the best place to ask the question, you are asking for us to give you a way to configure your firewall properly so that Exchange is NAT'd outbound. This question would be more appropriate for a firewall vendor
specific forum as your question is related to their devices.
That being said, I can provide some basic information. Have you confirmed what IP the outside world sees your Exchange server is with tools like whatismyip.com ipmonkey.com? If so, then you need to configure your outbound NAT for Exchange.
What rules do you have currently setup for NAT? I think what you need is something like this:

Let us know if that works. Those commands are for Cisco firewalls, so if you have a different firewall, let me know.

Configuration the connection between portal and srm server only via JDBC

Dear all:
   We want to implement the SRM server and present the supplier web/page in the portal server. Our SRM and portal server install in intranet network.
   For internal employee use the SRM server and the Supplier access the portal server via Internet, we install Web Dispather in DMZ to exchange the HTTP request.
     Network TOP like this :
    SRM server--Portal||FireWall||-Web Dispatcher--Supplier
(--Internal|firewall--|DMZ|-Internet )
The question is : Between DMZ zone and our internal network zone ,there is the firewall and it only allows JDBC protocol (SQL statements or result set) to pass. Other protocol and port could not pass this firewall.
So ,it seems that no way to implement this ,right? Or any other way to implement it ?

Portal items - naming conventions

Hi,
I'm curious to hear of the naming convention that you folks use for your Portal.
When creating a remote portlet for example, I'll need to create a webservice and a portlet, so I might name them like this (assume this is a small calendar portlet):
My Calendar - Web service <-- for the web service
My Calendar - Portlet <-- for the portlet
But then I wonder if I even need the "Web service" and "Portlet" text as these are usually clear from the context.
As someone with very little experience with ALUI I'm keen to hear what others have done and how its worked out.

Here are a few examples of some of the naming conventions we employ:
1. We add " Web Service" to the end of the name of each web service. When the web service is only used to instantiate one portlet, we name the web service <Portlet Name> Web Service. When it can be used to instantiate many portlets (e.g. has an accompanying template), we name the web service <Descriptive Name> Web Service.
2. We give portlets a concise and descriptive name. The name of the portlet shows up in its title bar when it is displayed on a page (unless you hide the title bar), so using a convention like <Descriptive Name> - Portlet would add extranneous information to that title, decreasing usability.
3. We add "Job" to the end of the name of each job operation - mainly to increase effectiveness of Admin Object Search when configuring the Automation service
4. We name admin folders that contain crawlers and jobs <Descriptive name> Crawlers and Jobs - again, to increase effectiveness of Admin Object Search when configuring the Automation service
Naming conventions are important, but they become more important with more distributed portal deployments. If you allow community managers to access administration and let them create their own admin objects, you'll want to have some governance in place that explains the rules (without making them so complicated they become an annoyance).

Direct Access URL

I have the following situation:
I have a page named "notes" and I want to call this page from an item in a content area. So, I created an Item type "url" and completed the url field as: http://hostname/DAD/url/page/notes
It works fine.
My problem is that I have multiple Portal instances (with different DAD), so if I export/import the content area I will have to manually amend the url to set the correct DAD for that instance.
Any ideas how I can solve this situation?

A possible workaround is that, since the base href of a content area page is http://server.domain.com/pls/dad/ you can just supply the value "url/page/notes" in the URL item. This will make the URL item independent of the DAD name. Do not include "http://" in the entry.
Note however, that this will make this item invalid if used in a content area in a distributed portal configuration. However, if you simply have a single portal installation in which the content area does not need to be accessed from another portal, this should work out fine.

Customize the ToolTip for the BUILTIN tools

Is there a way to customize the text of the Tool Tip associated with the BUILTIN tools (BUILTIN_RECTANGLE, BUILTIN_REDLINE, etc...)?
I tried some code like this:
rectangleTool = redlineToolBar.getBuiltInTool(MVToolBar.BUILTIN_RECTANGLE);
rectangleTool.setToolTip("Select by Rectangle");but it did not work. In fact, it made the map un-renderable (if that's a word).

Please see the Portal Configuration Guide for the discussion of a distributed Portal. In the case you describe, you simply need to register all the Portals with the Login Server, but don't need to link the portals to each other since you're not describing a distributed portal but rather a number of portals that simply use the same login server for authentication. This boils down to adding partner application entries for all the portals on the login server and then running ssodatax on each portal to associate it with the login server.
Then create the admin accounts for each portal on the login server so that the administrator can log on and distribute privileges accordingly.

Can't Download Mac OSX Mavericks with Mac OSX 10.7.5

something appears to be wrong here. I go to download mavericks from the app store but no download occurs (can't believe I have to use App store for this). i'm on a late 2011 mac powerbook. download shows up in launchpad with a status bar that never moves. mac app store won't acknowledge download when i press the download button. no status update on the mac app store, it just thinks about it for a second and then goes back to displaying the word "download" I have seen this same problem on this forum but have not seen an answer that works for my situation. anti virus disabled, firewall disabled, gatekeeper set to allow for app store. Any suggestions?

To determine if it is actually downloading use Launchpad. You should see a fairly obvious new icon with an associated progress bar. Make sure you check every Launchpad page by swiping left / right.
If it's paused, click the icon to restart it.
Once it completes the icon will appear in Applications and Launchpad, it's just easier to find in Launchpad.
When it's finished downloading it looks like this:

Open the Mac App Store.
From the Store menu, choose Sign In.
Enter your Apple ID and password.
Click Purchases to get to your Purchases Page.
Click the Resume button next to the app name.

How to deploy a distributed visibroker based-application ?

I have build a collaborative video application that allows physicians to work remotely, at the same time and together on medical video files preliminary replicated on each site.
To initiate a collaborative session, an application, called supervisor, is run on a computer with a well-known IP adress. Then, each remote user must connect it client application (collaborative video player) to the supervisor one by filling the IP adress of the computer running the supervisor application. The aim of the supervisor aplication is to receive messages that encode user action, and to redistribute these messages to all other client applications that will be updated indentically (state consistency must be maintained).
Both client and supervisor application have benn developped using Java and the Visibroker 4.5 Corba ORB has been used for communications between remote applications.
All the tests we made on a local nework were successful. However, we have big problem to use this distributed application if the computers running the supervisor and the client applications are connected through the Internet and not through the same local network.
If you are familiar with Visibroker, you may know that a daemon, named Smart Agent must be run so that remote objects can be seen. This daemon works well on a local network but how can we use it through the Internet ???
The visibroker documentation mentionned that a command instruction allows to mentionned the IP adress of the computer running the smart agent (.... -Dvbroker.agent.addr= 125. ...) and even on which port the smart agent is listening to. We have tried this withourt success !!!
So, I don't know what to do now. That is the reason why I post this message to this forum. I really hope that someone would help me to solve this problem.

By default, the visibroker orb performs resolve_initial_references using multicast, which (depending on your network configuration) will not be routed outside the local subnet. You should be able to connect to the visibroker smart agent on another network by supplying the following options to the client application -Dvbroker.agent.addr=<address of machine running smart agent> -Dvbroker.agent.port=<smart agent port> -DSVCnameroot=NameService (as long as you have started the naming service with the name NameService). This assumes you are using the visibroker orb on the client. If you are using an applet, the usual security restrictions apply. If you have to go through a firewall, ensure it is configured to let IIOP traffic through or I think you may be able to configure visibroker to use HTTP tunneling.
