Dock Moves Wide

I prefer to keep the dock on the right side, and it periodically disappears without my being able to bring it back unless I select left or bottom. It always comes back so I finally decided to live with this quirk. Two days ago, I bought a second monitor and realized that the right dock hasn't disappeared -- it's showing up as the only thing on the secondary monitor.
It isn't resolution -- my Apple menu and Spotlight icon are placed just as they should be and I know the screen resolution is accurate on both monitors. I called AppleCare today and they told me to take it to the Genius Bar after frankly admitting that they didn't know what could be causing it.
An archived thread at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2846106&#2846106 touched on this with no answer. It isn't a major problem but is a major annoyance. Any ideas?

Just a thought...
There could be an intermittent short in the DVI port or on the motherboard and when it occurs the Dock jumps/moves to the non-existent 2nd monitor.

We regularly use Cocktail by Maintain software. You run the whole gamut of options but the important one is in System - Databases - Rebuild launch services. Also in Files - Caches - then clear the lot.
This is just houskeeping really but there are so many 'links' in A/cad it needs 'cleaning'

  • Dock moves to second monitor

I have a MacBook Pro with a second monitor. On occasion the Dock unexpectidly moves from the bottom of the laptop screen to the bottom of the second screen. It has been doing this since I upgraded to Mavericks. I have figured out when this happens and I can reproduce it at will.
If I take my mouse and move it to the top of the second monitor and move it straight down to the bottom the Dock will move. I then have to move it back. It does not happen when I use the trackpad and it does not happen when I do it on the laptop screen.
    Any suggestions?

    CF,
This did seem to work. It did also remove the Menu Bar from the second display.
However, when the setting is turned on I can ove the doc by swiping down with the mouse only. Using the trackpad does not do it. And once the dock is on the second monitor, it can't be moved back to the laptop display by swiping down.
So it would seem to me that the feature was poorly implemented and still remains a issue for Apple in my opinion.

  • Main screen and dock move to second display

    Hi all,
although i found many replies regarding to how to get the dock to the desired screen i face the following problem.
I am a vj/dj using serato dj, mix emergency and madmapper. Whenever i connect a second display to my macbook (macbook pro early 2013 retina, now on OS 10.9) the main screen and dock is transferred to that second display (e.g. projector). These softwares need to run to the main screen only, and this should be my laptop's screen.
Even if i get the dock back to my macbook display, these softwares recognise as MAIN display the external one and not my macbook pro's display.
I am facing this problem since my OS upgrade to 10.9 from 10.8!
Can i do something to my macbook so as to always recognise its own display as the main display? Does this problem exist on Yosemite as well?
Can i downgrade to 10.8 if all the rest fail?
    Regards

    Hi konstadinos.k,
I understand you want your MacBook Pro to be the default display for your DJ software when you have a second display connected to it.  Take a look at the article below that explains all of the options for extending or mirroring your displays. I've highlighted some key information below that may be helpful in your situation.  Even though the article is for Mavericks, the info should still be applicable.
OS X: Using multiple displays in Mavericks - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202780
You can also assign an app to a specific display space from the app's menu in the Dock. Windows assigned to a space always open there when the display you specified is connected.
The blue boxes in Displays preferences represent each display that's connected. The size of each box is relative to the current resolution of each display. In this example, the smaller box on the left is the display of a 13" MacBook Pro while the larger box on the right represents the Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display.
Drag any of the blue boxes to change the location of a display in relation to your additional screens. You can use this feature to make sure your connected displays match their real world location when navigating windows. The white bar at the top of the blue box represents the menu bar. Drag the white bar onto the blue box representing the display you want as your primary display.
    Hope that helps ...

  • Menu bar shows twice on dual monitor, dock moves around

Mac Pro (early 2008) w/ Yosemite and dual monitor display
The menu bar at the top of the screen appears on BOTH monitors ALL the time. However, the one on the secondary monitor is dimmed out, and can be two or three app switches behind. For example, awhile ago I worked in Illustrator, and the Illustrator menu bar is visible in the second monitor (but dimmed). On the main monitor I have been in several apps since, but currently it is showing Firefox. If I mouse click on that dimmed out menu it will go right to Illustrator - and the Illustrator menu will appear on BOTH monitors. It will remain this way until switching to another app which has palettes on the second monitor, so just now I went to InDesign, and now that menu bar is visible. Also visible are the usual items in the right part of the menu, such as the time.
The Dock can also switch monitors, but that has only happened once.
Finally, but I think related. When in Adobe apps, with all the palettes located in the second monitor, when I click on something which should pop up more choices (anything in the character palette) - sometimes the pop-up will appear all the way across both screens, and on the main monitor. That is a ridiculous pain.
Other than that the system seems stable, and the apps do work. I did go back down to one desktop in spaces, but that seems to make no difference. Ideas ???

In my preferences - NONE of the check boxes are checked. I did check the mirror displays one earlier today, but that is not the answer.
Right now on my main monitor I have Firefox in the top menu, and the dock in the bottom, on the secondary monitor, it shows Photoshop main menu dimmed out. If I click on a Photoshop command in that menu, it immediately goes to the program.
iTunes is open, I just moved the main window over to that second monitor, now I can see both this Firefox screen and the Firefox menu, but now on the secondary monitor I see the iTunes window -- and the iTunes main menu is visible but dimmed in the second monitor.
I honestly don't think this is intended. It is certainly not helpful. The second monitor seems to remember whatever was open there last. Weird. I have used 2 monitors for YEARS, not seen that one before.

  • Prevent the dock to move from one screen to another.

I have two external monitors connected to my mac and every some time the dock moves to the bottom of screen one (where all my destop icoms are located) to monitor two (no icons). How I can fix this. I want my dock in the same place all the time.

System Preferences, Mssion Control, uncheck "Displays have separate Spaces".

  • Can't move items in dock -tried several solutions

My problem: I move a dock item to where I want it to be, a moment later the dock moves it down to the end of the dock.
I've searched the forums and tried the following solutions to no avail:
-Shift dragging items in the dock.
-Dragging dock items along the bottom of the dock as I move them.
    -Deleting dock preferences -plist file
    -Deleting dock database -db file
    -Resetting Sync preferences
    -Unchecking dock from sync preferences
I'd rather not do a scorched earth re-install does anyone have any solutions to propose?
    Thanks very much,
    Niels

  • Dock disappears for a few seconds and minimized apps open up

    Hello
My dock at the bottom of the display will disappear for a few seconds and at the same time, my minimized open applications will open up. This usually happens when I'm running a few light applications at once. It almost seems to "gulp" or catch it's breath.
I'm not sure if this is related but for the second time since purchasing the machine the dock is showing a sort of double reflection at the very bottom. An open application has what looks like two lit triangles underneath the icon instead of the usual one triangle. The same area at the bottom of the dock shows a very tiny "bottom" of the page I have open, in this case Safari. It also moves left and right as I move the open page left and right. If I move the page down, the sliver at the bottom of the dock moves up.
This is only the second time this has happened. The first time it went away on it's own and today it's back. It's not troublesome at all but I'm just wondering what may be causing these symptoms.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * On Windows you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * On Mac you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''option''' key while starting Firefox.
    * On Linux you can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by quitting Firefox and then going to your Terminal and running: firefox -safe-mode (you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''

'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

  • Change @ icon to website icon on dock

OS X 10.9.5 MacBook Pro- How can I replace the '@' spring with the actual websites' icons on my dock so I can easily see which website the @ represents?  It would be so much easier if you could just see the actual website icon instead of having several of the same '@@@@@@@'  thing on the dock!!! Thx!

    Apologies I wasn't clear enough…
Drag a link from Safari to the Desktop (forget about those springs in the Dock - they are useless for editing they look 'real' but that is a lie). You will have to re-create them all I'm afraid.
Get info on the new weblink, click the icon, so it highlights ready to drop an image onto it.
Find the image you like & drop it onto the icon…
Now add that to the Dock & start cursing about how Macs are simple - why it has to be this way I do not know
The next piece of bad news is that if you delete those new weblinks, they will stop opening from the Dock, move them to a folder for safekeeping.
All of this makes me fee that you are doing something wrong - generally when things are this clunky Apple didn't expect this use case & be prepared for them to break it in future, sorry.
Next step - wonder why screenshots need massive furry shadows
P.S. some images fail to look good as icons, transparency can make things fall apart or sometimes you get generic icons instead.
    Good luck

  • Application dock and multiple monitors

I'm moving my MacBook around quite a bit and hence connect it to a few different monitors. My preferred setup is then to extend the desktop to cover both monitors, and have the external monitor configured in OSX as it is physically placed at the desk. (So, if the monitor is to the left of my MacBook I want it to be on the left in OSX, and vice versa.) I also prefer to have the application dock on the left hand side of the screen on my MacBook as this gives me the most vertical space to work with on the 13" screen.
But, as I connect it to a monitor placed on the left side of my MacBook the dock moves to the far left side of the available space on the now extended desktop, thus placing it on the external monitor.
Is there any way to configure the dock to never leave the MacBook screen? So that when I connect a second monitor to the left of the MacBook screen, it would simply keep the dock on the left side of the MacBook screen. I would have to cross it to enter into the second monitor, but that would be much preferred over having to cross both screens with my cursor to reach the launcher.

Displaylink isn't really designed for high bandwidth video, as it relies on CPU to do the compression. The stuttering and blurring means there is a bandwidth issue with the dock. Are you plugging the dock into the USB 3.0 or USB 2.0 port?

  • Not able to rearrange items in the dock...

Just curious. My dock is not sluggish, as some have experienced, but I am a bit miffed that I cannot - as yet - rearrange items in my dock. I can remove them, and I can add them to the right side, but, if I try to place an APP or a folder into the dock/move them around, I get nothing. Any ideas?
    Take a look - http://www.screencast.com/t/JmaseProJ

have you tried dragging the icon lower in the dock, more at the level of the plate.
see if you go down farther whether or not the two icons split. there is a critical point you need to be beyond. it looks like you are close to it though.
if this isn't the problem then i am unsure.

  • Safari icon isn't on dock

I have a Mac IOS 10.9 and  when I turned on my computer today the Safari icon was off the dock. I couldn't find it but I was able to get online with Firefox. When I did it asked me to upgrade and gave me a choice of new browsers I could download - Safari being one of them. I don't understand Firefox too well. Should I download the Safari if I already have it?'
My most important question is: how do I get the Safari icon originally from my Mac back on my dock? I can't find it.

Click Finder in the Dock to launch it.
Open  Application Folder and then Safari.
When Safari is open, right click Safari icon in the Dock, move mouse pointer up tp Options and select "Keep in Dock".
    Best.

  • Whole window/dock moving when moving mouse?

Hey i have this kind of problem that when i move my mouse also the dock moves little bit at the same time and it's really annoying. So it's not moving a lot but just little bit and also the panel where is the clock etc is moving or maybe shaking is better word to discribe the problem. If i move mouse up and down the dock etc goes up and down little bit and when moving left to right it goes left to right.
What can i do to fix this problem?
    Thank you

Check universal access in system preferences and see if you have zoom activated. When the screen is zoomed even a tiny bit one of the options is that the screen moves with the pointer. You can use option⌘- to make it normal and option⌘= to zoom.

  • How to update managed iPads (COMPLETE)

Here is my very short summary of what needs to be done to update the apps and iOS on managed iPads in the mobile cart. As you can see, this is very brief and concise, and you can do the update process in just a few minutes each day.
Ha hah ha, that was a good joke, eh?
No, the truth is that you must be prepared to be frustrated and annoyed, wasting possibly hours of your time on this learning the process, and finding this all to be way too complicated and difficult and annoying.
Updating the supervised iPads one at a time, is only just slightly less difficult than updating all of them, all at once, in parallel using the USB hubs in the cart.
Sorry, but there doesn't seem to be any simpler way to do this. This is what all schools that use managed iPads have to deal with.
The iMac admin account is "@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@"
I have set the admin account password to "###########"
Please inform me of any password changes.
    1. System software / iTunes / QuickTime update:
Turn on Mac, logon as administrator
Go to the Apple menu (top left corner)
    Choose "Software update…"
Install any updates it finds, restart the computer if needed.
    2. Apple Configurator (iPad manager) update
Go to the Apple menu (top left corner)
    Choose "App Store…"
Look across top of window, far right says "Updates"
If there is a number next to it, click on Update, then click the Update button.
    App Store update account: @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
    Password: #######################
    Restart computer if needed.
    3. Updates for iPad Apps
On the dock (move mouse to bottom center of screen)
    Run iTunes
Select Library -> Apps on left side
In dark gray band below app icons, look for a message like "Updates available"
If yes, click arrow next to updates message.
Top right of window, select "Download all free updates"
    Quit iTunes
    4. Updates for iPad iOS (operating system)
On the dock (move mouse to bottom center of screen)
    Run Apple Configurator
At top of window choose Supervise
In left column select "Cart - 30 iPads"
"All iPads (xx)" should be shown in middle column
In right column "Settings" should be highlighted already next to iOS.
    Click button "Check for Update"
    5. Updates for Apple Configurator iPad Apps
(Should do this section if any updates were downloaded in iTunes)
    Continuing from section #4 above:
In right column click on "Apps"
Click on + at bottom of Apps list. A file browser window appears.
At top of file browser window, 4th item from left should be selected, for "List view with details"
The "Date modified" column should be highlighted. If not, click on  it.
Under "Mobile Applications" click on top program name in list, note in modified column it says "Today"
Scroll down until you find the last item updated "Today"
Hold down the Shift key and click on the last item. That and everything above is now selected.
    Click Open button on window
    Logon with management account:
    U: **************************
    P: ##########################
In bottom left corner it will say "Updating…"
For every program that was updated, a window will pop up that says "Item exists, do you want to replace it?" and you have to keep clicking Update over and over and over until all the Updates are done.
The Update button moves around depending on window size, so you can't just leave the mouse in one spot to hit all the Replace buttons.
Click the Apply button at the bottom center of the Apple Configurator window
    6. Updating all the supervised iPads at once
You are now ready to connect the iPads and Apple Configurator will automatically install the latest iOS version, and the latest iPad app versions.
If Apple Configurator is not already running:
    - On the dock (move mouse to bottom center of screen)
    - Run Apple Configurator
    - At top of window choose Supervise
    - In left column select "Cart - 30 iPads"
If the iPad cart has cable trays that can slide, open the back of the cart so they are able to slide backwards. Otherwise if not, make sure there is enough slack to plug in an iPad and insert it backwards with the cable and plug to the rear.
Flip all the iPads over in the cart, so the "top edge" with the power button is exposed. This allows you to power on the iPads during the update, explained in the section below.
On the back of the cart, unplug all iPad cords from the white Apple power bricks, and plug into open ports on the USB hubs
Plug the USB cable from the cart into the back of the iMac
Wait for the iPads to be recognized by the iMac, about a minute or so. They should start to automatically update.
It will take a while for each iPad to download any iOS updates and install apps, maybe 30-45 minutes.
!! UPDATE CAN FAIL IF YOU AREN'T VIGILANT !!
When you see an iPad listed as "restoring backup" (after about 30 minutes), you must check the iPad to see if its screen is black. If it is black, you must reach over and press the power button for that iPad about 2-3 seconds, or the restore will FAIL.
You have to sit there and periodically watch for any iPad that says it is "restoring backup". The iPad shows a spinning timer, then the Apple logo, and the screen goes black. This is where you must manually turn on the iPad, or the process fails and you will have to start over for that iPad.
You have a couple minutes to turn on the iPad after it says "restoring backup", but there is no notification at all when Apple Configurator shifts from "Installing Apps" (30+ min) to "Restoring Backup". So you just have to sit there, and wait, and watch.
Once all the iPads have been updated, you need to unplug all of them from the USB hubs and back into the Apple charging bricks. This is because the USB hubs shut down and will not charge the iPads, if they are not always connected to the iMac, which is in a stationary location in the elementary library.
    7. Dealing with passcodes on iPads
Some iPads will inexplicably fail to update, with error messages such as "could not apply policy". These usually have passcodes installed by students.
There is no way to simply remove the passcode and keep on using the iPad. It is necessary to completely erase the device and all data on it, reinstalling the operating system and all programs.
There is no way to disable the passcode or prevent students from setting a passcode.
A partial solution is for me to set a passcode, set the device auto-lock time to never, and staff must unlock the iPads themselves before handing the devices out to students. Students must not be told this passcode, or they can again change it and lock the device.
So, to remove a passcode, first look at the device in the supervised group list. Select it and copy the name of the device to the clipboard, or write it down.
Right click on the device and choose Unsupervise. It will be erased and rebooted, which takes about 30 minutes. It then appears on the leftmost Prepare section for setting up new devices.
Set this device to be Supervised, enter the name you copied previously, tell it to update the iOS, apply the Student security profile, and use the most recent backup (I've added dates to the backup names).
On the Apps tab, select all apps (checkmark next to everything).
    Click Apply
Setting up for supervision takes an additional 30-45 minutes, and you will need to wait for it to say "restoring backup", at which point you need to manually power on the iPad as discussed previously, or this whole process fails and you will have to start over.
Yep, that's all it takes! As you can see, it should be a piece of cake to learn to do this, right?

  • Macbook Pro is slow & laggy - EtreCheck Done

    Hello Everyone,
I have serious performance issue with my MBP (late 2011). I attempted most common steps on this community and it doesn't solve the problem. The boot-up takes about 2-3 minute alone, when you move the cursor across the dock there is a delay of a few seconds for them pop out. All actions performed are taking incredibly long. In past 2 years, i never had a problem like this.
The system works fine in SafeMode, as if nothing is wrong. There is graphic performance issue (dock movement not smooth) in SafeMode but i think that's fine since its SafeMode. No other problem as such. Below are EtreCheck; i never installed any anti-virus or mackeeper or any such malware. I did install ccleaner but never really used it. I have Adobe Photoshop CS6, which i rarely use but my profession demands i keep it. I am facing this issue since yesterday, so initially i thought that i may need to upgrade my RAM. So i upgraded from 2 x 2 GB to 2 x 4 GB RAM. I now have 8 GB of Memory and unfortunately, the issue isn't resolved. Since it works well in Safe Mode, i think some application is trying to cause this issue. I used Activity Monitor to terminate any such application however, no such application is responsible for such CPU consumption yet the current stats are:
    System: 86.25%
    User: 6.55%
    Idle: 5.60%
    Already tried:
    Restarting Macbook Multiple times
    SMC Reset
    NVRAM Reset
Removing unnecessary application which i no longer use
    Removing non required Internet Plugins
Verifying hard disk to see if it needs any repair. All OK here. Read and Write speed 64mb/s and 54mb/s respectively
