Drag or Saving Word Docs - No Access?

Hi Guys,
got a strange situation on our small network, wonder if anyone can throw some light on it?
If I create a word doc on my desktop (Laptop running Windows XP), and then drag it into a shared folder on our server (running OSX 10.5.8), I cannot access the file again!
It shows NO ACCESS in the sharing & permissions window.
I have to go into the server as ADMIN and change the permissions every time.
No matter what I create or drag onto the server, Im getting the same issue.
(Apart from using a Windows machine) what am I doing wrong?
Thanks

Are you dragging from Windows or OS X? What is your exact setup (how did you connect your PC to the server)?
I'm dragging from several newish iMacs (less than a year old - running 10.5.8 & 10.6.3
Which computer is the NO ACCESS issue in? The PC or server (or another client)?
Can't access the files on the "Server" (see below).
What about from another mac?
Same issue from either Mac OSX or from the Windoze XP machines.
Now . . . . I think I'd better explain the setup of the "Server" (which isn't really a server)
We have a Mac Mini (less than a year old, running 10.5.8 - not server), sitting in a cabinet and this has an external 1Tb drive attached to it. The Mac Mini is basically running the "file sharing" throughout the small office rather than acting as a dedicated server (no idea why it's been setup like this).
This is where we're constantly having problems.
If I save a file to the "shared" backup drive (from OSX or XP), it provides us with access to this file for a short while, then after a few days, it locks everyone out except the top level user.
So "Everyone", & "Staff" (groups) are "Read Only" or "No Access" after this period. I then have to go to screen sharing to get myself onto the "Server"(Mac Mini), locate the file on the backup, unlock it, re-allocate "Read & Write" access, then close down the screen sharing again.
It's all a real pain in the butt!
I hope this makes sense to someone, cos' it sure as heck is baffling me!

  • Problem saving Word doc as PDF - Vista?

I have a pc with Vista and Word 2007. I have adobe Reader 9 or 9.1. Some free download or add on thing allows me to save word docs as PDFs. This worked fine to start with but then I found I couldn't move the PDFs I have created from one file to another or delete them. Next I found I couldn't move other PDFs I have downloaded from websites. Then I found I couldn't open the PDFs I had created but I could still open website PDFs I had downloaded. I can still open, move and delte PDFs created on a mac and sent to me by email or memory stick. What is going on? Please help!

So you're saving them from Word using "Save as", correct?
If so, what happens if you use File>Save as>Adobe PDF?

    Hi,
To save the wordfile to the database make use of lob types.
Make use of JDBC to do this.
    retreiving
Make use of JDBC to fetch the previously saved doc.
Populate a context of type IWDResource(Nw04s onwards) or  Binary(Nwo4).
    Set the appropriate  mime type

  • Saving Word docs with balloon comments

I think that this is a Word issue, not an iMac issue, but I could not find the Word for Mac forum.
Word has started doing something new and irritating, and I can't figure out why, since I have not changed any preferences, etc.
Now, when I hit the Save command and am working in a document that contains balloon comments, I get a query box that says "The document being saved contains comments. Continue with Save" and I have to click "save" or "cancel" each time.
This is a huge problem for me because I correct my students' papers. and often work on client documents (I'm an editor and writer(, using the Comments feature, and I save very often (for obvious reasons!) — meaning that I am getting that annoying dialogue box all the time. I want to tell Word once and for all that yes, I want to save documents with comments in them, and to stop asking me every single time I hit Save.
Does anyone know how to turn off this feature which, as I said, has just started appearing for no apparent reason.  I looked everywhere I could think of in Word Preferences, but no luck.
Basic info: I have both the 2004 and 2008 versions of Word, both with the latest application updates. This annoyance occurs regardless of which version I'm working in. Using an iMac with OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
    Thanks.

Sorry, don't know the answer to your question, but the Microsoft Word forum is here:

  • Problem Saving Word Docs

We are using GW 8.0 with HP2
I have one user whose changes in Word are not reflected in the Library.
The changes DO exist in a numbered file the Save / Checkout folder
This is Intermittent with only 1 user
She always (she claims) closes the document via File / Close. I think
we've removed the 'save' button from the tooldbar.
Amy ideas why she might be having these problems.
    Steve

Our approach has always been to do a File / Close when finished editing
    the file.
We set up Word to do save AutoRecovery Info to a personal network
folder so that if anything goes astray, we always have a good backup /
salvage of the file (we may lose the last 3 - 5 minutes of editing
depending on the setup of Word)
We point our Save / Checkout to a personal network folder as well
This has always worked for us ....

  • Trouble opening documents in word that were created in pages (even though i saved as word doc)

I know how to save documents in pages to word format, I've seen the tutorials and read things over and over again about this. However, I am creating some documents in pages, saving them as word docs, emailing them to other people who are opening up on PC with word, but the formatting and the paragraphs are all messed up. I really need help so I can get my work done and my documents I create at home in pages will open up correctly in word by others.
    Thanks.

    So, an update of sorts.
Turns out it's not a total hang—if I leave the ball spinning (for 30+ minutes), the open dialogue finally pops up... but it's in an empty home folder.
We seem to have some sort of corruption of the home folder file hierarchy (there's an odd folder called "99" that appeared on the root of the server's main drive—I can't get access to it, and I don't want to monkey with the permissions until I can figure out what it is) that dates from the same time that our problem popped up. The only thing that I can think of that I changed at around that time was to add a new group home folder. Might I have mucked up the file system? (Shouldn't be that easy, should it? But hey, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing!)
Any thoughts or suggestions? Could the problems (the phantom folder and the spinning ball of almost-doom) be related? Or am I simply dealing with a pair of peculiarities that are unrelated, or that are both symptoms of yet another problem, rather than cause and effect?
Thanks to everyone who's chimed in so far for you input!
    But, to reiterate, help!

  • Pages document saved as doc not readable by word

    Hi all,
Lately I'm having trouble exporting my Pages documents to Microsoft Word format. I've tried the "Export" option directly available in the File menu, as well as the "Save as a copy" option in the Save dialog box. De document is correctly saved as .doc file and Pages can open, read and modify it, but I'm unable to open the exported document in Microsoft Word on my Windows PC. LibreOffice on my Linux PC does open the file, but doesn't show any of the content. Only some strange symbols are shown.
I'm running Mac OSX Mountain Lion with Pages downloaded from the App Store, so everything is up to date.
Does anyone have the same problem or know how to solve it?
    Thanks in advance!

Since it's obviously not a Pages plist issue, I think more drastic measures are called for.
The simplest would be to run the Mountain Lion 10.8.3 combo updater. In systems past, running the combo updater, even if it had been used before, can clear up some system odditites. It may work, but I think the problem is with Pages. Again, the simplest approach would be to delete Pages & reinstall it and run Software Update. I know you should get the most recent version from the Mac App Store, but this has helped others in the past.  The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user. The easist way to delete iWork '09 is to use Yvan Koenig's AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip.

My itunes library was on my PC.  About two years ago I switched it to my Seagate server/hardrive. (itunes-preferences-advanced-change library). Last summer (2012) I bought a macbook, which seems to access the seagate server hard drive fine for word docs, excel spreadsheets, etc. It also seems to have started its own library which is not complete. My PC died this summer (I still have it though).
Now when syncing any of the multiple devices (ipods, ipads, iphones) that we have with my mac book, itunes states that "an error occurred" or the "app cannot be found".  Itunes wants me to erase the device and sync with my macbook. The message "The iPhone “Renee’s iPhone” is synced with another iTunes library on “Renee PC”. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library? An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library."appears.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • My Word docs are NOT saving as PDF files.

I go to "File, Print, PDF, Save as PDF, save doc to my desktop, click Save"...it "processes" then chimes alerting me it's completed, but the PDF is NO WHERE on my desktop (or anywhere on my laptop for that matter!!)
The interesting thing about this problem ONLY happens when I CREATE that particular Word document. If someone emails me a Word doc and I download it and then open it up in Word, I am then ABLE to save it as a PDF. Soo, I tried emailing the file I created to myself...downloaded it, and tried to save as a PDF, same thing happens as before....no where to be found.
Helpppp. I am SO frustrated. THANKS

Okay - could be a bad file or a document with a goofy format, size, or table of contents snafu.
I had issues with Acrobat 9.x with Word 2010 (Windows).  I stopped using Acrobat and just started doing what you're doing - saving direct from Word > PDF - and haven't had an issue since (other than bloated file sizes even saving as "minimum").
So my advice is to look at your document.  It could be a TOC thing, or a large image, or something else messing up the engine.
Remember, Office 2007, 2010, and 2011 all save DOCX as XML files.  So the "converter" (save-as-PDF) is rendering XML > PDF.

  • Word processing software:  Appleworks, NeoOffice / saving as Word.doc

I would love some advice on word processing software.
My daughter is a college student who sometimes needs to e-mail her papers to a teacher (in Word). She does not have Word, and we're not buying it. In the past, she's used the school computers, but that's not always practical. She has a Mac, with Appleworks on it. If she works in Appleworks and saves a paper in Word format, will it really open okay in Word, with footnotes, images, etc. intact? (Obviously, she doesn't want to get a lower grade for something so silly and avoidable.) I think I have seen on this forum somewhere a mention of trouble with footworks in Appleworks docs saved in Word format.
Also, if she were to save as a Word doc, which format would be the best to use: Word Mac 6; Word Mac 98; Word Windows 6; Word Windows 97, 2000, XP 2002?
She also needs to do simple tables sometimes, which it looks like Appleworks can do. Do these translate well?
Also, I have looked at NeoOffice and OpenOffice online. It looks like one of those would be a possibility for her, too. Apparently, documents can be saved as Word files in those programs. Does anyone know if they are any better than Appleworks for this purpose? (For instance, with footnotes?)
From the NeoOffice Website: "You can exchange documents with Microsoft Office and OpenOffice.org users, even on other platforms!" Does that mean a Word file will open and display okay, if you get one e-mailed to you? And that your own Word file will open and display okay on the other end? (I know this is not about Appleworks, but someone might know. . .)
Looking through this forum, I have seen software for opening Word documents (icWord), but my daughter needs to be able to (reliably) go both ways--saving and opening.
    Thanks much in advance!

    Overall, I'd concur with Ken.
AppleWorks/Word conversion does have difficulties with tables and footnotes.
Neo Office has better compatibility with MS Office, and runs without installing additional software on your Mac. But it's a Java implementation of an earlier version of OpenOffice.org, and is missing a few recent improvements. It's also a bit slow, although in some uses this is not a problem.
OpenOffice.org runs in an Xwindow (no relation to MS Windows), and requires installation of X11, Apple's Xwindow implementation. I haven't used it, but expect that it is a more compatible implementation than NeoOffice.
Both are free to download and use. If nothing else, one or the other is useful to see how successful the AppleWorks > Word translation of a particular file has been.
The closest compatibility will be achieved with MS Windows (Mac), of course. If your reasons for not purchasing MS Windows are strictly economic, you mmight want to rethink them. As a student, your daughter is elegible to purchase the Teacher and Student edition at a much lower price than the retail version. This version is operationally identical to the retail one. The largest difference is a licencing one—student/teacher licencees are not eligible for reduced price upgrades to the next version. They are, though, eligible to purchase the next Student & Teacher edition provided they still qualify at that time.

  • How to secure word docs, access only via username and password?

I have created a CMS (Content Management System) where
residents can access publicly made available word documents
uploaded via the web by authourised members of a residents
    association. (no password needed)
    password only needed to upload
I have also created a section for excecutive members only
where documents for coming meetings are kept, but are not yet
available to general residents. (password is needed to view these)
All works fine apart from the executive section, all the
documents seem to get 'spidered' no matter what is in the robot.txt
    file.
this i know as i have been tracking visitors to it.
the pages are not yet live or in use as i want to be sure
that these 'not for public viewing' file are not viewed until they
    are in the public folder.
each section will have their own folder, but google has
'spidered' all pages! it seems that google and other sites are not
taking notice of the robot.txt, i have read on some sites that this
is common. how they do this is beyond me, i though that you could
only spider a site that had a home page and that you follow all
links contained within this initial page.? seems that this is not
    the case.
what other methods can i try out that will protect these
    files.
(please do not reply with, do not put them on the site!) i
have had this with other forums in the past.
    only sesible answers please.
and thank you in advance for your time.

i have been busy looking around but not finding anything.
My PHP scripts at present accept the word docs and store them
    in folders, lets say, www.site.com/secretfolder/...
One suggestion is to have them in a database, this is not
idea, but is going to be the last resort.
the idea i like most is to have the outside the root www
    folder.
what i am not sure of is how i allow access to them if normal
access can not be used. i.e. www.site.com/myfolder/file.doc
one way that has been suggested is streaming but this
completely eludes me, i first thought streaming was for sound and
video, but that aside, please can someone provide some links to
sites that show some examples or more information on how i do this.
i do not need the file to be uploaded as i can change my
scripts to upload to the new folder that is outside the root www
folder, what i do not understand is how i get the file back from
this outside root folder to the user that is wanting to view it.
my way of thinking is to create a temp folder inside the www
folder but this means that the files will then be available to the
robots again and if i was to have the folder cleaned after the file
is taken what happens if the server or the persons pc was to crash
or something, then the script will not complete and the file will
still be available to view by the robots.
    or is their another way
