Dropped frames on MultiCam editing with Canon XF305 Footage

Hello,
I recently purchased three Canon XF305 series cameras and have been conducting a series of tests to determine the best recording format and editing workflow. First, does anyone have experience with these new Canon cameras?
Using the log and transfer utility, I've been bringing the files into FCP natively using the canon codec (which is actually mislabeled as a Sony codec). Once in, the footage looks good to edit, without requiring rendering.
However, when I setup a multiclip sequence with the three cameras, the render bar turns green and I'm getting all kinds of dropped frames on playback. Is this a computer processor issue, drive speed, or codec? The multiclip is the only time I have trouble -- once I collapse the multiclip, I can edit fine without any drop frames.
I've done tests using 5400x and 7200x drives using both firewire 800 and eSata, no changes. I believe that rules out drive speed.
Is this a processor issue? What can I do to resolve this, as our workflow involves 100+ hours of footage from 3 cameras.
Thanks in advance

but my experience with the 305's in ProRes is that it makes it a bigger file(more than double)
Of course it will. XDCAM is a highly compressed format. ProRes is a larger file type, higher data rate. It will be larger. Did you not notice that the ProRes footage from the 5D were also about 5 times larger?
and still needs to render.
If you worked in a ProRes timeline, then you shouldn't need to render. If you still do, than something is wrong. Create the file...make a new sequence, cut this into that sequence...FCP will make the settings match. If it does this, and you STILL need to render....you did something wrong.
when I actually converted to ProRes, it seemed like it was more taxing on the computer, took up twice the hard drive, and more than three times the time to transcode compared to native.
It is less taxing to actually edit with. GOP formats require the computer to constantly process the GOP footage to show you frames...since there are no real frames in any GOP format. Well, there are 3 frames every second, then a bunch of pictures, and the computer has to guess what is next by looking at the frames, and then the pictures, and make up the in-between. PRORES is a full frame format...no guessing, no computing. And larger files are not more taxing on the computer...they might require faster hard drives...and larger ones, but they are less taxing. Yes, longer to convert than native, but when that is done, things are easier.
But, do what you want. I just gave a suggestion.

  • Multicam editing with multi-track audio?

Does anyone know how to do multicam editing with multi-track audio?  Apparently, the multicam editor can only see Audio Track #1 in the Source Sequence.  I tried mixing my original audio tracks #1, #2, and #3 (submixes) to the master audio track in the Source Sequence and if I listen to the new Multicam Sequence (the nested Source Sequence) all 3 original audio tracks are there (combined), but when I go to do the multicam edit in the multicam monitor window, I"m back to just Audio Track #1 of the Source Sequence and audio tracks #2 and #3 are missing ???  Thanks for your help!

I have run the gambit of different techniques. The one that is most efficient is listed in Colin Brougham's response number 9
There's a far easier way to do this: after you sync your angles, hold down Alt/Opt and select or lasso just the video portions of the clips, and nest those. The audio stays put, but the video moves into the nest, and you can then enable Multicam on the nested sequence.
One of the best things about this is that it circumvents Premiere Pro's totally BS "Render Required Files" nonsense.
I must admit the ALT lasso tip was one of the best features I have seen. Like a revelation when I discovered it some months ago while watching a tutorial about something not related. As far as the "Rendering required files" That was kicking my but for a while doing multicam editing. If you do edit both audio and video in multicam you might find the "Rendering required files" issue. Basically the problem stems from having a lot of cuts to process at the same time both audio and video. 1080P is a huge amount of data when you multiply it by four cameras plus multiple audio cuts and effects ,(audio gain, Deessing etc.) So Pre-rendering the audio by clicking in the main sync timeline and then at the top Click Sequence/Render Audio. This takes care of the issue when you are cutting multiple tracks at once. It is a good practice to work from a main sync sequence and then copy that to a new sequence  preserving the main sequence as unchanged. I found the solution is to "render audio" only in the master sync sequence this will then pass through to all subsequent copies that are made "downstream" allowing you to easily clean up anything. If you make a mistake you can always start from the main sync sequence and not lose too much time. Takes a little bit of time to render but once that is done you can cut all tracks video and audio like butter. I have been doing a lot of 1080p multicam editing over this past year and had quite learning curve. Most of the work I do is multicam editing by choice it is much faster for me to edit this way because I am used to working in live events where we need to look at all shots at the same time make a "best choice" and keep rolling. Have fun with it!

  • Drop Frame video (29.97) with Non-Drop Frame Time Code

    Howdy All,
I understand that DF TC & Non-Drop frame TC are numbering issues and not frame
    count issues, That said,
If I have an encoded file captured from an analog Beta Cam SP that has NDF TC
and that file has been encoded as 29.97, so that the resulting file has
a Frame rate of 29.97 with NDF TC from the source tape,
    1) Does this constitute an error?.
    2) Will this cause problems for the next guy?.
(having been "The Next Guy" in the past I prefer to handle such things on this end if it requires handling)
I have been looking for a straight answer but this specific cause/effect
    is tough to track down.
Thanks in advance for any assistance,
    KA

Well, starting as a linear editor I can tell you jam syncing and converting to DF will really screw up the TC. Every 10 seconds you'll have a TC number that's incompatible with the DF counting sequence.
If these are source tapes, you have nothing to worry about. I actually prefer NDF source while editing (I'm very old school) beacuse if I trim 5 frames on a mark I can calculate in my head where the new point would land regarding TC. With DF, I trim and often have to do a double take because the math didn't make sense.
Do NOT ever alter the time code on any source material unless you have a capture failure that you have absolutely no other way of working around.
Anyone can mix DF and NDF source time code on any system without any issues. The only problem with NDF is determining EXCACT running time of a completed program when delivering for broadcast.

  • Multicam editing with Transitions

Hi. Does anyone know if its possible to have FCP use a default transition (e.g. a Cross Dissolve) rather than the standard cut whilst Multicam editing?
It is easy enough to go back and drop in a dissolve on each edit point, but we are working with shows and concerts sometimes >3 hours so it's a bit time consuming! It would be great if FCP could automatically use a cross dissolve - any ideas?

    Shane,
Just getting started with FC Studio 5.1, and successfully used it to do a short multicam edit. After adding a cross dissolve at every angle cut, saving the project, and later re-opening the project, I can no longer use the multiclip in the viewer to change angles in the timeline. Is this due to the addition of the transitions, or to having ended the edit session, and later coming back to it?
Btw, the multiclip was created and synchronized without the use of a common time code, which was not available.

  • Multicam Edit with Audio from 2 Cam

I'm editing a multicam project with 5 cameras.  I want to use the audio from 2 cameras.  What is the best way to do this?
Right now I have the main audio all the way down and I dragged just the audio from the 2 cams I needed onto the timeline.  They aren't part of the angle viewer.  Is there another way.?  I had to manually sync it.  Hope that makes sense.

In a multicam you can choose to switch audio and video, only audio or only video, so you can just use the 5 angles corresponding to the 5 cameras, and work with that.
It is perfectly easy to do in Angle Viewer. Just click the appropriate button at the top of the Angle Viewer.
In the picture above the "video only" button (blue) is selected; in this situation, if you click to cut to a different angle you'll cut and switch only the video, and keep the same angle for audio. You can click the audio/video or the audio only whenever you need, and it will act accordingly. Very easy, very effective.

  • Multicam edit with camera that starts and stops

I am editing a multicam shoot and want to create a multicam clip with my two cameras. Camera A never stopped running, but Camera B stop several times. The time code was synced on Free-Run so there is no issues with syncing, but I want all camera B's footage to be on the same video track. Right now when i select all the clips FCP creates a multicam clip with several video tracks (for every new clip). Is there a way i could have it place every clip from camera B into one track so i can edit using camera 1, camera 2, as opposed to going up to camera 50?

    It's an option,
No, it's an elegant and practical solution to the production problem caused by your shooter. Free running timecode will drift (rather hopelessly) so you're not really gaining anything tanglible. You still have to sync the clips visually, you won't be able to depend on t/c except as a guide. Which is convenient but not solid.
im working with DVCproHD and a very big project so i don't want to take up more HD space.
You want to get the project done? Go buy another drive for $200.
    Also, everything is logged beautifully
Logging incorrectly-acquired footage doesn't amount to much, but, if you need to recapture, you're in luck. If you consolidate the footage into a single clip as suggested, recapturing is simply a question of replacing footage into the master clip and exporting it again.
I've also heard about using camera angles. does anyone know if this would be an option for this?
You only have two cameras and two angles. What have you heard about angles that would suggest them as a solution? Maybe if we understood how you have misunderstood angles, we could help you clear that up.

  • Multicam editing with FCE

Beeing relatively new to FCE and coming from iMovie, I have had high expectations for better ways of doing multicam editing whenever I have shots from several camera positions that I want to move between at the same course of time in the timeline.
For instance, say I got three cameras and I want to see what each of them displays "simultaneously" while doing playback. Is this possible in FCE? Or at the very least, is it possible to quickly hide/unhide a video layer during timeline playback, so that I can see what is going on "beneath"? That way I could at least see "simultaneously" two camera positions...

You are probably right, but I cannot find those menuitems or shortcuts anywhere. The closest thing I have got is the Toggle Clip Enable (Control-B) key combination that hides or unhides a given clip, but this also stops playback. Can you tell me what shortcuts and/or menuitems I should be looking for?

  • Opening CS4 projects in CS5 error with Canon 5D footage HELP!!!

HI Im trying out the new Premiere Pro CS5 demo and Im getting major problems opening projects.
Initially I couldnt open any of my CS4 projects but could import single sequences one at a time only, not whole projects. So I was finally working fine yesturday and today nothing opens that includes canon 5d footage . I get this error.
"This project contains a sequence that could not be opened. No sequence preview preset file or codec could be associated with this sequence type."
I get the same message when I import a whole project. Yet I can import a whole project 1 sequence at a time!!!
I can only create new projects which save and open but all older saved projects do not open.
    thanks
    remainz

Yes, this is an intermittent issue with CS5. Somehow, there’s a problem wherein certain commonly-used codecs suddenly remove/disable themselves. I had this problem, and it was driving me crazy as I couldn’t open anything, and it was just way, way too much work to recreate. So I opened up a new project. Lo and behold, the program suddenly informed me that there were codecs that needed to be installed. Codecs which, I’m sure, have been installed already, but obviously Premiere knows that they’re missing. Allowing the program to install them, and then allowing it to quit itself, and then reopening the program again enabled Premiere to open all of my projects again.

  • Import failed with canon 6d footage after latest update

After I updated to Final Cut X 10.0.8, I've been getting "Import Failed" messages during the import process when taking in footage from my Canon 6D
The import process also seems to be going very slow (slower than usual)
I've tried duplicating the SD card locally on the hard drive and re-importing, but have gotten the same results.
If I click OK on the error dialogue box, the import will continue. but another box will pop up every 5 to 10 minutes or so
    Any ideas?

Hey Russ, it actually works fine for me too the few times I've used it but I point it out as a common denominator with people who have trouble importing that way. Separating the .mov files into their own folder eliminates the camera and card reader, both much slower than just transfering files from a connected drive. But I'm doing newspaper video with Canon DSLRs - including 5D3 video, similar to 6D - almost daily where speed is of the essence and this is by far the most foolproof method I've come across.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 playback stops with Canon DSLR footage

I am using Canon DSLR footage (5D and 1D). When I import the footage for the first time everything works OK. If I save, close and reopen the project without doing anyother activity on my PC everything continues to work OK.
My problem is that after I close the project and start doing other activity on the PC e.g. using Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash etc and not necessarily all of them, and then reopen Premiere Pro I then start to get a problem with playback stopping on the timeline after about 5-10 seconds.
What I have found is that if I import a fresh Canon DSLR file from the camera then everything starts working fine again until I start using other programs.
There must be something on my PC that is causing a conflict but I can't work out what it is.
Are there any known issues that might help me solve this problem.
My PC is running Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit. I have two x 2.66Ghz quad core processors (NOT hyperthreading), 12 GB RAM, Nvidia FX 4800 graphics card.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have finally resolved this problem and it is several weeks since the "fix" with no repeat of the problem.
I uninstalled Nero from my system and straight away the problem resolved.
I noticed that prior to removing Nero that it was taking priority over Quicktime which, I think, was causing the conflict with codec for the Canon DSLR files in Premier.
It has now been 4 weeks since I removed Nero and there has been no sign of the problem of the video footage stopping in playback on the timeline.

  • Footage problems from digitising with Canon XF305 to FCP

I have uploaded my footage no problem from a canon 305 to FCP (7) using log and transfer but when I play back the footage it has lines going through it when the subject is moving. I may have the incorrect settings or something. When I put a clip onto the timeline it says it amends the settings to the clip but the clip remains the same. There are no issues with the camera and uplaoding to avid (i don't have avid but other footage from the same camera was digitised fine).
Help! I can upload a clip tonight as its pretty strange but I'm sure its just my lack of editing wisdom and its probably something really easy to resolve.
    Thanks in advance.

No change but i did upload a small clip to youtube from my capture scratch and the lines dont appear :/ weird! http://youtu.be/uOUdrqL4ISc (put it on HD)
Do you have any idea what else cud course the problem?

  • Problem With Canon 7D Footage During Editing

    Hello,
I've recently shot a thesis film on a Canon 7D and 5D at 29.97fps at 1920x1080p resolution, and I've imported it into Premeire Pro CS 5.5 to start on my rough cut. However, three specific clips shot on the 7D stop working shortly after I import them. By "stop working" I mean the audio recorded in camera is completely gone, and the video is solid red. No "Media Disconnected", error message, or anything. It plays normally right after importing it, and as soon as I'm working on a different file clip the video is solid red, both in the timeline and the source window. I'm able to play the clip normally in Quicktime and Windows Media player just fine, audio and everything. However I did notice that Premeire detects those three files at true 30fps, instead of 29.97. That should only affect sound sync though, am I right? I can provide a screenshot to illustrate what I'm saying. What did happen earlier was that the files got corrupt because the camera didn't end the file correctly, which I fixed using some software. Could that possibly have something to do with it? As I've mentioned before, the source file plays just fine, so I'm not so sure. I've tried rendering, re-importing, putting effects on it, nothing's worked so far. I've used Premeire for a long time, but I've never seen anything like this before, and it's really frustrating. Any advice?

Thanks hiphopsuperman, this worked for me! Strangely though, the native file wouldn't transcode, it would be stuck at 0%; I even left it on overnight and still no dice. So I tried the FCP exported version and that did the trick. Very strange why those three particular files didn't wanna work when all the other files shot from that camera work just fine. Anyhow, I'm just glad that I don't have to reshoot that shot, thanks again!
Also, Powered by Design, thanks for your advice as well, had the other solution not worked I would've tried yours.
    Thanks guys!

  • Editing with Canon 5D Mark II Problems

    Hello fcp experts,
I shot a short film on 5D and I did not know that I should convert the raw files to Apple ProRes 422 in Compressor and then edit it on final cut pro.
I already edited the raw files in fcp. and I started adding fades and outline texts. then I rendered them and exported it. That's when I realized that the color of the video changed whenever there was subtitle or fades.
Is there any way to fix this or do I have to convert all the files to Apple ProRes 422? (I did start) Is there any short cut to this?? Please help!!!

    sorimsanim wrote:
I followed this guideline I found online and it said to set in and out points on the raw files in Compressor.
I've never heard of this being done in any of the conversion workflows I'm aware of, and it seems like a waste of time. The amount of drive space you'll save will be negligible - if saving space is the reasoning behind it. Reconnect to the ones without in and out points.
+And could you tell me the exact settings after conversion? It should be Apple ProRes 422, right?+
If that's what you converted them to, then yes.

  • HELP! Audio Drops Out When Trying to Capture Canon XL2 Footage

Please help me out here. I'm a freelance camera operator w/ a Canon XL2 and several times now I've gotten calls from the editors saying they're having problems logging my footage, mainly the audio drops out quite a bit, and I'm not talking bout one second for every 2 or 3 minutes. No. It's like every 10 seconds the audio drops in and out.
What's the deal? Two times the guy was using a Panasonic DVX-100A to capture, another time it was a SONY DSR mini-DV deck. With each incident I had to go over with my XL2 and use it as the capture device, which is a pain.
The program they're using is FCP HD or 5. But I think even when they just play the tape in their Sony or Pany cameras, the audio may still suck.
Help me out here, I can't be the only one with this problem.
    Thanks.

Well Robert Swanson, I hope my post wasn't taken offensively, it certainly wasn't meant as such. The only Canon camcorder I owned was the GL1. After switching to Sony's I can honestly say it would take something significant to go back. And, I was merely relating my experiences in trying to capture from other Canon camcorders so that I know where you are coming from. However, I am interested in the HVX being the "noisest" camera on the market. I am seriously considering this camera and would be interested in a review that points this out. I would be using the hard drive recorder instead of P2 cards.

  • Can I covert 480i to 1080p and edit with new 1080p footage?

I have a Surf Video shot 4 years ago at 720x480 30i (mini-dv) and I want to add more footage to it. I shot on a Panasonic ag-dvx 100 and edited on my G5 with Final Cut 4. I will be buying a Panasonic hvx200 and a Mac Pro.
My simple question is can I up convert the 480 30i footage to 1080 30p and edit it Final Cut 7 and can I mix in new footage shot 1080 30p?
My more difficult question is: I understand I will have black boxes on the sides of the footage if I can upconvert, but the footage I have in 4:3 would actually look better in 16:9 if I lose the existing top and bottom of the frame (mostly blue sky). So could I make the conversion and also "zoom in" to fill the 16:9 frame with the 4:3 footage? Is that possible? And if it is possible... would it look really bad?
    Thanks!

It's not a simple question at all. Depends on your budget for upconverting software, your tolerance for pixelation, your ability to stylize your older work creatively, and your release medium..
Upconverting is easily researched on Google. There are two processes, one is a simple expansion and the other relies on the creation of pixels where there none. Takes a lot of time and the best tools are not free.
However, there's no need to upconvert your old SD footage if you're going to downconvert your new HD footage on the way to a conventional SD DVD.
