DS 6.3.1 slow searches

We have a relatively large installation (16 million entries in multiple db-s) with Solaris 10 x64 running on HP BL460c quad core intel machines.
Our problem is, that the system is fast in 99.9% of the time (bind+search: 0.01s), but sometimes we get answers in the seconds. The entry is in the entry cache, indexed searches only, no paging, cpu load is light.
Anyone has any idea what causes this, or how can I find out the causes? I tried more polling threads, FSS schedules, but there weren't even marginal improvement. TCP queue-s are ok, request-que-backlog is 0. What other places oto look?
Thanks in advance!

I forgot one important thing in the original post. The slapd runs on a compressed ZFS filesystem (slapd instance).
The OS is not tuned, so it runs on the default memory allocation scheme. The machine has 8Gb of RAM, and never uses swap.
I made a plockstat on the ns-sapd [http://web.t-online.hu/pakolicz/plockstat] . I found a half recond and a full second lock.

  • Slow Searches on XServe...from SOME computers

Having a weird issue where I have some computers logging into our XServe that are getting really slow search results. My Macbook gets lightning quick search results, and one of the iMacs we have gets very fast search results as well. However, we have systems that just search and search. Whereas my laptop finds things more or less instantly, our Mac towers (which range from 2x2.66GHz Dual Cores with 5GB of RAM to a Dual 2GHz Power PC G5) take forever on searches.
It's not a network issue, as they can search each others drives very rapidly. And it doesn't appear to be a system software issue, as while I am running Leopard (as is the server), the iMac is running 10.4.11, as are the Mac towers.
Any help would be VERY appreciated - this is incredibly frustrating!!!

    Hi Randy Baer1-
Might be a bad idea to discount a network problem so quickly. Speaking of which, is this a wired, wireless or mixed network?
Are you sure that the Macs in question are connected at the speed that you think they are? Do all of the machines take the same physical route to the servers? Are the slow G5s connected to the same physical switch or router? If they are wired have you tried swapping ports on the switch or router to which the Macs are wired?

  • Low memory and slow search

My mac mini is slow, is it because of low memory?

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, and monitor, if applicable. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
You must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step. Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “system.log” from the file list. Post the 50 or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out before posting.
    Step 3
Same as step 2, but select "kernel.log" from the file list.

  • Io7 "This message has no content" and incredibly slow search...

So, ever since upgrading to io7, I've had a few problems with Mail on my iPhone.  I'm using a standard IMAP configuration.
I suspect the principal problems here are that the mac is connecte 100% of the time to the email server and no longer has a batch of emails downloaded on the phone.
    1) Searching mail is orders of magnitude slower than it was before. Sometimes it just churns and churns.  It used to be nearly instant unless I specifically chose to "search for more messages on the server"
    2) At least a few times a day messages fail to download... I get "this message has no content".  Usually after a while these eventualy download.
    3) I finally figured out you could add "subject: from: etc..." to the search bar but why be so gimicky?  The original search filters were so much easier to use.  Now I have to find the dang colon key?

A friend of mine had the same problem with his search. When he found out that mine was super fast, he did some testing. He ended up taking out Email search.
Settings---> General---> Spotlight Search---> And remove Mail from the list of checked items.
Try that to see if the search speeds up some, I know you may not like that though.

  • Slow searches in large file ...

It is almost unusable to use the find function as is in my large file, as the program won't let me complete my text in the search field once it starts looking for the first string of text i type. I have enabled the whole words option, but this doesn't help much. I tried to use the "use selection for find" option in the menu, but this is always disabled, so I'm not sure of this is of any use...
Any ideas how to get search to wait until I type in the whole text field before it starts to bog down??
    Thanks
    jcm

    Thanks for the reply.
File is 7 Megs, 1000 rows, columns to BB.
I don't mind that the search is slow, but e.g. when I want to search for "johnson", it stops me from typing after jo, then again after john, then again after johns etc etc, .... Best workaround so far is to type Johnson into a blank cell somewhere, then paste it into the search field...but if this is the answer, it's back to Excel.......

  • Slow Searching on Multiple PDFs

I am using Adobe Acrobat 8.0 Professional on a Windows XP PC which is on a Novell network.
I have a directory on a network drive that a dozen people need to have access to for the purpose of doing searches across all of the PDFs in the directory. We have 352 PDF documents split into 27 subdirectories. When I search the entire directory, the response is very slow. I used the catalog feature and built an index. Doing a search on the index is somewhat better, but still slow to response.
When I copy the entire directory to my local drive and do a search (whether with the index or based on the directory), it is MUCH faster.
Any ideas what could be hampering the performance of the search on a network drive? I can successfully search other full directories on network drives.
    Thank you.

One more thought.... I just recently installed a 2nd
hard drive in my powermac and moved my itunes tracks
to the new drive. The only drawback is when my 2nd
hard drive goes to sleep and I haven't played
anything in iTunes for a while; there is a 4 or 5
second lag when I play the first track until the 2nd
drive kicks in. So I know having them on an
alternate drive can impact performance in iTunes.
Yes, I notice this lag too but that isn't too much of a problem because after it spins up, everything is up to speed except of course the searching. One would imagine that having a FireWire connection would be fast enough though.
One thing I may do when I get the chance is to rebuild the iTunes library. I can throw away the .xml file. Start up iTunes and then simply drag my music folders to the iTunes window and have it re/build the .xml file. That could work.
    Thanks!

  • Slow search when search with nsrole= something

    Folks,

  • Slow Search on large spreadsheets

The progressive search is does not work on any large spreadsheet. If I want to search for 'peanut', Numbers seems to actually perform 5 separate searches: "pe", "a", "n", "u", "t". That is just crazy. If I wanted to search for "pe" or "pean" I would have entered that.
The net effect of this is for a large spreadsheet, say, 1000 rows, the search takes forever, pegging my Macbook Pro CPU (well, only 1 of the CPUs as Number is unfortunately not taking advantage of both!).
Apple, please redesign the search feature to have better performance. I have had to move my spreadsheet back to Excel on my Windows test machine to work on any large spreadsheets.

    MB,
It's a well-known issue that large Numbers documents are slow. You can register your complaint with Apple by using the Feedback menu item under Numbers.

  • Why the slow searching in iTunes 5?

I was wondering if anybody else noticed the big increase in search time after the iTunes 5 update. I have a library of 10,000 tracks which I used to be able to search instantly (as I type). Now, there seems to be a BIG delay when I'm typing. I mean, I can type a song title like "We Belong Together (Remix)" and it slowly types it out while it searches for like 10 seconds or so. I'm running a new PowerBook 15" 1.5ghz at highest processor performance, it really shouldn't take so long.
I was just wondering if other users with large libraries are experiencing the same problem. If so, is there any way to correct this issue that you've found? Thanks!

    Hello:
Yes, I have this same problem. What's the deal? It's is quite annoying. I don't have a fix or haven't called Apple yet. Have you discovered anything?
    Thanks.

  • Slow search facility

    Hi,
If I have a reasonably long document in Acrobat Reader and I do a search, when I type the first letter in the search field it counts the number of occurrences of that letter in the document, which can take several minutes (e.g. there were over 10,000 ds in the document I was searching), then the number of occurrences of the first two letters, etc.  Is this supposed to happen? It is very frustrating!
I have got round it by typing the whole search phrase elsewhere and then pasting it into the search field, but that's not idea.
    Regards
    Angus Walker

  • Super Slow search with UMS

my contacts are updated by UMS from work... there are several thousand people here so I have them all in my contacts. when ever i try to find a contact it takes minutes even to access them. Is there a way to segregate lists or group them so I can search smaller groups when I want to? Can I set those up in Entourage or my contacts on my Mac ?

got a new iphone and deleted multiple copies of address book from computer

  • Address Book - very slow search

I get the spinning pizza after typing three letters into my search panel. It sometimes takes 2 or 3 minutes to find a contact. Anybody have any suggestions?
I suspect my database is corrupt. I have saved it to back up and then selected my backup database. This didn't help.
    Jo Hauser

Sometimes the search index needs to be replaced. I recommend following these steps:
    1 - Quit all applications
    2 - Open a Finder window and press Command-Shift-G
3 - In the "Go to the folder" textbox, type: ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
4 - Press the Go button
5 - Find the file named ABPerson.skIndexInverted and drag it to the trash
6 - Open Address Book and try your search again
These steps will delete Address Book's search index, and performing a search in Address Book afterward will rebuild the index from the database.

  • Very slow searching?

I have had this problem the last month and it is driving me insane. Whenever I click on a related artist or I do a search for an artist and then click the artist it takes about 30 seconds for the songs to show up. I know it has nothing to do with my internet connection because I am at 100mb/s fiber connection at work and at home I am at 60mb/s fiber. The issues occurs both at work and at home. Any fix for this?

Have been experiencing this issue for the last two weeks using the iPhone app with BT Infinity, everything else works fine, including the Windows client. If I take my home router to another site or use 3G it works great. Tonight, for example, the search doesn't seem to cancel when I try to unjam it after waiting over a minute for results. I then tried searching again and after another minute I was able to see the results in the Artist search. I am a light web user (DNS/HTTP/SSH) and do not run any P2P/mass sending traffic across the network. If you wish to track traffic to my account I can follow a test plan between 19:00-21:00 UTC tomorrow if this helps diagnose the issue. The following may help: Reading the first answer on http://community.bt.com/t5/BB-Speed-Connection-Issues/Do-BT-throttle-Spotify/td-p/303889/page/2 seems to be BT's official advice on the topic (this is due to it being written by a "Community Manager" who should know, or say as much, if unsure): "If you are concurrently running applications that use P2P alongside Spotify we recommend you stop the P2P application for a trial period (e.g. under an hour) and see if this stabilises the Spotify experience. If this stabilises the Spotify experience it may be the characteristics of the P2P application that is interacting adversely, if this is the case please let us know as below." As it is a fibre to the curb solution, the VSDL DSLAM is in the box at the end of the street. Depending on how the network is designed and where the QoS is applied, my scenario of a low traffic user shouldn't be affected. Hmm... My first thought is that Huawei (who seem to supply all of BT's VDSL tech) wouldn't have provided QoS capable boxes for installation in so many locations. I'm guessing that they have selected these (or very similar judging by the boxes around the streets of London), especially when the sales gumph states: "Approximately 5,000 cabinets ha[ve]s [been] installed in the field " so the QoS will be applied on the other end of the fibre. WARNING: The following is pure speculation on my part (seriously, it can be regarded as fiction)! Now putting yourself in the position of the person remotely controlling/monitoring the kit at the exchanges; how do you filter the traffic coming in? Well you'd classify network traffic queues such as Web, Email, VoIP, P2P, etc (called class-based queueing) and then divide equally between ISP controlled IP addresses. Picture the scene, the network engineers are given a new GUI based tool which provides network monitoring and analysis tools. They define a set of metrics to watch, making sure latency doesn't spike, I'd bet it doesn't include any monitoring of the iPhone client for Spotify (although the world would be a better place if companies such as Spotify could centrally register their servers/traffic profiles and this is fed into ISP kit). A bright spark notices a pattern. The PE routers providing certain ranges are over utilising the network and causing latency spikes for all customers. The fact (and I use the term in the loosest sense) that TalkTalk and a few BT Infinity DSLAMs are causing the problem is not even consider, as quite likely that information is not displayed to the staff running operations (although I'm sure if they cared, they'd of added it to their dashboards, hmm...). As TalkTalk (currently one of the UKs cheapest providers) and Hauwei are unlikely have QoS on their kit: everyone downstream of the router is punished when the jumpy P2P filters suddenly include Spotify (hinted to in the BT answer mentioned above)congestion occurs and with ISPs controlling Bufferbloat we get tail dropupstream TCPACK packets (beyond the PE router) may be classified as P2P and dropped (RED shooting them out of the sky)Good luck getting BT to help, but yell if I can. Please get in touch with BT as Spotify is unbeatable.
