Dual Audio Outputs (HDMI + Headphone)
Hi people,
Just wondering if it's possible to have the audio outputting to both the HDMI and the headphone jack???
I'd like sound from both the TV and my speak at home...
Thanks,

Nano lacks dual audio output?
When I plug in my Nano into the Alpine iPod adapter of my car audio deck unit, I have to unplug the headphones to get the Alpine to receive an audio signal.
I'm pretty sure that the regular iPods were able to receive an audio signal through the dock connector with the headphones plugged in.
Is this the way the Nano is supposed to work?
This is annoying because I've found that the easiest way to wear out the connectors of the headphones and the connectors of the iPod is to plug in then and unplug the headphones on a regular basis.
Can this be corrected in software? Perhaps a dual audio output can be activated with the next firmware release? If not, it should be possible to direct the audio output to the dock connector instead of the headphone output when the dock connector is active. This can be done as an optional setting in the menu since I would assume that not everyone would prefer this setting all of the time.Did you get your Nano to play? I have a 420i adapter for my Alpine HU. Plugged in the Nano, the unit recognized it. The Alpine splash displayed on the Nano but, no sound.... Had a mini before and everything worked fine.

Select HDMI audio output when headphone connectted
In Snow Leopard, I can connect my headphone to Mac Mini, and select HDMI audio output when I want sound from monitor, or select headphone.
But in Lion, I can not select HDMI when headphone is connectted, so I have to plug/unplug headphone very often, quite anoyying...
How can I disable this feature?
Thanks.I've just started a thread regarding this exact issue, but in Mountain Lion. Did you ever solve it? Or, if you have upgraded to Mountain Lion, do you still experience it?
EDIT: Almost exactly 1 year later you get a response. lol. -
2 different "switchable" audio output (HDMI and analog) with Mac mini
Hello,
I have a 2010 Mac mini that I use as a media center. Its hooked up to my HDTV in the living room via HDMI. I also want to hook up external speakers via the 3.5mm analog jack. These speakers are in the kitchen.
I would like to get my audio through HDMI when I watch TV and be able to get audio output via 3.5mm jack when I just want to listen to music in my iTunes library. I like to control my iTunes library with the Remote app on multiple devices.
Is it possible to switch automaticaly the audio output?
Right now I use my Airport Express to stream music from my Mac mini to the speakers but I think that the Airport isn't really needed since it lies just by my Mac mini. I'm pretty sure the mini can do both.
I've tried to hook the speakers to my Mac mini but first: I hear a "hum" in the speakers (wich I don't hear with the Airport) and second: I can't seem to get the audio out in the speakers.
I've read many posts about the audio midi settings but I can't figure it out...
Any help?
Thanks a lot.I hit post too early... here's the rest of it.

With those apps (or combination thereof)
You can copy an audio stream from one output to another. -
Dual audio output, Headset + PC
Not sure if this has been asked.
At work, we recently started using Lync for our conference call, my question is can Lync be set to instead of using A or B audio device to use A and B?Hey Chris, the only way I could see this working is if the built in audio device supported dual input/output (the one on my laptop does), however would require an analogue headset rather than usb.
What are you trying to acheive? Maybe there is another way to achieve a similar outcome.

Many people are obviously considering using a Mini as a media server, but there is one big problem with that which I'd love to be able to solve.
How can you send quality application audio to the AV amp (via TOSlink probably) BUT, keep system sounds on the Mac itself, or better to a small local pair of PC speakers (contained in the monitor perhaps)?
There's nothing worse than some good quality high volume audio being interrupted by deafening beeps and other system alerts. So how best to arrange 2 audio outputs that can be differentiated in the System Prefs so System sounds go out one port and other sounds (e.g. iTunes etc) out the other? Are USB and/or Firewire adapters the only solution?Soundflower looks interesting, but I don't think it'll do what I want.
The only way seems to me to be adding a USB audio device. The Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro Sound Card provides basic functionality on a Mac (which is all I need) and uses the same combined analog/optical connector as the Mini itself. So that looks like a good solution.
I still wish the Mini provided separate control of the analog and digital/optical outputs. No reason why it couldn't list them as separate output devices in OSX. Then make a plug that separated the 2 signals. I think that would be very useful. In fact, why doesn't it list the external output separately from the internal speakers in any case? It's a shame they cripple its potential. -
Optical/Analog Splitter for Dual Audio Output
Does anyone know if the mini-TOSlink combo jack can simultaneously output both digital and analog signals? If so, has anyone seen a splitter that would let you take advantage of this? I need both output formats to feed into my multi-zone stereo receiver.
I am currently trying to find a solution to what is I think the same problem (receiver only routes analog signals to the additional zones). I haven't been able to find such a cable and have considered these to connect to my multi-zone receiver:
1) I have an old sound usb soundblaster extigy. I have used it in the past as a cheap d/a convertor of sorts as it has both digital input and outputs and works without being hooked up to a computer. If I feed it the airtunes digital signal it outputs simultaneously optical and analog to the receiver. The problem is that the soundblaster does add processing to the signal (volume control and mixing of its other inputs) so although it does sound clean, it almost defeats the purpose of the digital connection. This adds another unit and may not be ideal for you as you would have to buy such a card. Separate D/A convertors would also work but would add even more cost
2) I have considered taking my airtunes apart and tapping into the audio output and adding a second analog output. My warranty is already up but I am afraid the case of the airtunes cannot be opened without it breaking. This option does not fix the same audio distribution problem when I hook up my laptop.
I thought the integrated digital outputs on my macs and airtunes were ingenious till I ran into this problem with my new receiver. Too bad the receiver doesn't have a couple more D/As to route digital signals. With the number in there already for 7.1 channel audio I feel this shouldn't be a problem at least when listening to stereo digital signals.
Sorry for the long post, I will keep looking for a better solution, please post if you do as well! -
Dual use audio output HDMI and Headphone Jack on MacMini 2010
I am trying to use both the digital HDMI and analog headphone jack at the same time. My indoor home theater system use the HDMI and my outdoor amp and speakers are linked to the analog headphone jack.
Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get both to work simultaneously like I had on my AppleTV. I was actually using the toslink and the HDMI on the ATV.
Anyone have any luck getting both outputs to feed at the same time, maybe by 3rd party software, on the Mac Mini 2010see this discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2499492&tstart=15.

Multiple audio outputs - HDMI & Audio out
Hi all,
This is driving me a little nuts, so any help greatly appreciated! With the new Mac Mini models, you can have audio out via HDMI or the line out. I am thinking to hook the mini up to an LCD TV/monitor via HDMI (sound on the monitor) and also to my other TV/sound system via the mini DP and audio out.
I assume when the mini turns on it'll activate both displays (if they are turned on), and from what I understand you can have two displays running. I'd only want one at a time so I'd have the other display switched off. But can the mini output audio to either both, or whichever system I am using? I've read a lot of posts but can't find a definite answer. I only want audio (and video for that matter, but can turn off other screen) to one TV at a time, but do I have to go into the OS audio settings each time I want to swap between the two?
I'm also thinking of using Plex and keeping it open at all times, just sleeping the mini when not in use. Can the mini only output to one source, requiring manual switching to the other (i.e. going from HDMI to audio out)?
Thanks for your help!!I would consider using a switcher for the video. And use the osx sound output selection to change the audio.

No audio output from headphone jack?
I have no audio coming out of headphone jack on my 60 GB 'pod. Its songs will play normally through itunes but output from stereo jack is kaput. What gives?
Now this is an area that I am not familiar with. I do not know what your audio source is (microphone, DVD player?) and exactly what you are trying to achieve. You may have to use the Audio MIDI application so look at that to see what it entails.
I suggest that you start a new discussion listing your specific objectives. There are fellow users well versed in this area, I am not.

Dual Audio Outs? / HDMI and RCA Analog at the same time?
I am trying to figure out if the Apple TV supports dual audio output. My Onkyo receiver supports dual-room/dual-source audio (powered and line-level stereo audio output for 2nd room). The problem is it can only accept an analog source for the second room.
I know that HDMI takes precedence over component video connections if both are connected.
Will the ATV send audio signal out of the HDMI and RCA Analog jacks at the same time so I can enjoy streaming music is two rooms simultaneously?Iowabeerguy wrote:
I like to be a helpful soul, so I decided to pull the owner's manual from Onkyo and take a look at the receiver, without ever thinking about the model number, and come to find out, I have my Apple TV hooked into an Onkyo TX-SR606.
I appreciate that!
Iowabeerguy wrote:
Problem is, I have the HDMI into the Onkyo and the analog outs going to to another stereo receiver for the outdoor speakers. Both work at the same time, which means that the Apple TV will output both digital and analog at the same time.
Good to know.
Iowabeerguy wrote:
Now, let's look at the receiver - if you have the HDMI plugged into the - say DVD input, and it's playing through the main system, and you plug the analog outputs into the DVD analog in on the receiver, the Zone 2 out will automatically look at the HDMI input, and not put out anything to the Zone 2 outs, because it won't pass digital to the Zone 2 outs.
Oh yeah, that makes sense!
Iowabeerguy wrote:
I can't try it tonight, but I think if you plug the analog outputs from the Apple TV to an input that isn't assigned to an HDMI in, (like CD) and then set the Zone 2 amp to play that source, it should work.
I've set aside some "tinkering" time this weekend to try that. I'll let you know if it works; I think it will. Thanks again! -
Asrock ION330/Nvidia HDMI - No audio output
Machine was running archlinux and not been upgraded in over 6mths but HDMI audio worked fine. Decided to do a scratch build since all the changes in that time and have a nice clean system.
If it helps, this is what I install. Ssed this exact same install process for another Asrock ION330 and Acer Revo3610 (both same hardware) but neither use HDMI at all. Both VGA with either optical or analog audio. Both work with no additional config.
pacman -Sy nfs-utils screen ntp alsa-utils mlocate xorg-server xorg-xinit xorg-server-utils mesa nvidia ttf-dejavu xfce4 gamin slim mythtv unrar lirc xbmc wget
Get no sound output but also zero errors on any of the following commands. I should add that the receiver does not detect any audio coming in, ie it usually identifies how many channels of audio and type it is receiving.

FWIW, I even tried changing the HDMI cable, turning the amp on before or after the PC etc. No change.

[SOLVED] Only HDMI/Displayport audio outputs; no sound from speakers
I have a Dell XPS14 running Arch, which has worked fine for a while, but now has suddenly stopped detecting the internal speakers and headphones, so it will not play sound. I have tried a few things to narrow down the problem, but I've had no luck so far. In GNOME shell, when I press the physical volume up/down buttons on my laptop, it displays a sound icon with "HDMI / DisplayPort" underneath . When I go into the gnome shell audio settings menu, everything is greyed out, and no output devices are listed.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how I might go about troubleshooting it from here, I would appreciate it.
One thing that struck me was that I had installed a music player, Clementine, recently, and I'm not sure if I did or did not ever have sound after that. I installed Clementine and two optional gstreamer0.10 plugins (bad and ugly). Since this seemed like it would be possibly related, I've since removed Clementine, the new gstreamer plugins, and all of their dependencies not needed by any other package. So I now don't think that is likely to be the problem. Just to be thorough, though, here are the packages which were installed:

Last edited by bond0087 (2014-06-09 02:06:08)Thanks again for the info and suggestions. I thought the same thing regarding the sparse output of alsamixer, but since I never had trouble with the sound before, I don't know how much would have shown up when everything was working well.
I still haven't really found a smoking gun here, unfortunately. As far as I can tell, the power saving settings look about right, because the power saving settings for the HDMI audio (which works) looks to be the same as the others.
Thanks for the link with more information regarding the module options for the intel sound driver. I'm going to dig into those when I have time next week. The thing that makes me less optimistic that I'm going to fix it with module options is that I can't figure out how those module options would suddenly change.
I'm also going to try out the linux-lts kernel to see if it behaves any differently, and then maybe boot another distro with a usb key to see if it works, and if so, what looks different.
Here's what I get from the suggested tests. Let me know if anyone sees something strange that I missed.

Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out
What is the "combined optical digital audio output/headphone out"? This is what the output is called that has the earphone picture beside it on my MacBook. I thought this meant that it could take the mini jack out that splits into a/v - yellow, white, red, and plug it into any tv or monitor that has those inputs. I tried it just now, but a no go.
If the only way to get video is through the mini DVI output what does the "Combined optical digital audio output/headphone out" mean? If I can get video out of it, how can I do it?
Thanks!Hi Trevor Deck: As you have discovered this does not output as a video signal. That jack is strictly for audio. The "optical" portion of it is used to output using a "Toslink" cable to provide "optical audio" to an external amplifier. The DVI port needs to be used to get a video signal to your TV. But be warned if you use the red, white, & yellow method of hooking up the video signal you will probably be disappointed. If your TV has a HDMI or PC input it would be much better. You would then have to get the proper DVI to whatever type adapter.
Good Luck

HOW TO: HDMI Audio Output for Zotac Media Box with nVidia ION :)
I've been fighting with my recently purchased Zotac mini-PC for about 2 months now trying to get the HDMI audio output to work. I tried extensive modifications of /etc/asound.conf, different versions of ALSA, and even OSS without success. I've finally succeeded using ALSA and GNOME.
First I installed ALSA according to the Arch wiki.
Next I verified that ALSA detected my sound card(s):
cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
HDA Intel at 0xfe9fc000 irq 28
1 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xfcf7c000 irq 18
Next I checked which sound card had the HDMI jack:
aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 7: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 8: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 9: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
From these two commands, I concluded that I have 2 sound cards (important later on) and that my HDMI sound card was card 1 (NVidia) and that it had 4 possible devices (3,7,8, and 9). To determine which device must be used, I ran the following command for each device (for example, to test card X and device Y, use' plughw:X,Y'):
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
I tried each device and got the best sound from device 7 (8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...).
Now, since I had 2 sound cards, I needed to change the default ALSA device. My default ALSA device was card 0 (the Intel card), which wasn't plugged in, so I needed to change the default card to be card 1 (the HDMI card). After reading the ALSA FAQ, I found that modifying /usr/share/alsa.conf should work, though modifying /etc/asound.conf should have also worked. For whatever reason, I couldn't get my modifications to /etc/asound.conf to work, so I edited /usr/share/alsa/alsa.conf. In the "# defaults" section I replaced the following:
defaults.ctl.card NVidia
defaults.pcm.card NVidia
defaults.pcm.device 7
I opted to use the key NVidia rather than the card number (1) since I've read in numerous places that the card index can change unexpectedly after a reboot/update. The key can be checked with cat /proc/asound/cards as shown above.
After this, I reloaded ALSA (/etc/rc.d/alsa restart) and verified that the sound worked through the default channel:
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D default
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Finally, I rebooted, chose the HDA NVidia (ALSA Mixer) option from gnome-volume-control, and loaded a movie in gnome-mplayer. I was pleased to hear crystal clear sound with functioning volume control
I Hope this helps someone else, I found it very hard to piece together how to diagnose and resolve this problem. Here are some of the resources I found useful:

XBMC Troubleshooting for ION HDMI@sprince09 Can you hear sound through HDMI when you run aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav -D plughw:1,7 ?
(8 and 9 also worked, device 3 gave static...)
- what does it mean? How do you know that they are working?
What options do you have for snd_hda_intel in /etc/modprobe.d/ ? Can you play the following:
mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1,7 file.wav
BTW, can you hear sound form video files in xine? If yes, can you post your ~/.xine/config ?
