Dual Boot, Two harddrives. one Sata one Ide

Hello I have a slight problem. On one of my Hardrives (the ide one) windows xp is installed and when I set the boot priority to that hard drive windows xp start without a problem, ie windows bootloader is on it.
And when I set the sata hd as the first bootpriority grub starts and arch boots without a problem. However my problem is that I want the sata hd (with grub) to be able to boot the to, so I dont have to change the hd boot priority. How can it be done ?
It doesnt work this way

  • Dual boot two oems on new build

    Have built a new desktop. Asus Z97 pro mb, intel 4790k cpu, 16gb ddr3 1333 memory. 1ssd 120gb, 1ssd 240gb, 1 WD 1Tb hard drive for data
Purchased two windows 7 oems. Home Premium 32bit and professional 64bit with the components all from the same supplier.
Purpose to dual boot on separate ssds, within the one desktop.
Installed HP 32bit first on 120gb ssd but system refuses to accept Pro 64bit and will not install.
Computer properties indicates system is 32 bit. No indication that it is 64 bit capable.
Is this usual or is it not possible to install two oems on the same new build?

Windows should not care about this. I'd ask the hardware manufacturer or try them over here.

  • Dual boot two instances of Tiger?

I am wanting to create a dual boot on my Mac Pro (10.4.11) but I want to have two Tiger installs. Is this possible to do? The reason is I have two versions of the same software and I want to use one version for certain tasks and the other version for other things. Because one version is an update, if I try to have them on the same boot disk, it will overwrite files used in the older version and not let me have both the old and new software on the same disk (they use the same folders for their program and system files).
If this is possible, how would I go about setting up the extra Tiger boot?
    Thanks!

    swaffdawg:
It is possible. However, you would have to create a new volume on another partition or another drive such as an external HDD or a second drive in a tower.

  • Dual Boot-Two Disks

    Hi,
I have 2 drives to use and have windows installed on one and solaris on the other. When I am in solaris it will not recognise the windows disk as any type known. I've had solaris loaded on this disk once before, but it has windows now. I would like to at boot thru the solaris menu be able to choose which disk I boot off of without going thru the hardware change menu. Is there an easy way to add the second disk into the 4 part menu during boot?

    >Satellite Pro L40 - How to make a dual boot with two Recovery disks?
Short answer: you cannot do this. Maybe if you have two HDDs (I didnt tried this) but as far as I know your SP L40 has only one.
Ask this smart guy how to do this. Maybe he has some useful tip.

  • Possible to dual boot two separate hard drives?

I just bought a new SSD for my Mac Pro 5.1 and I want to install Windows 7 (x64).
I currently have a dual boot (using Boot Camp) on the hard drive that came with the computer (1TB) with Mountain Lion (OSX) and Windows 7 64 and it is working flawlessly.
Now, what I want to do is install Windows 7 on the SSD, then remove the Windows partition on the 1TB HD so that only OSX is on there. When I start my computer I don't have a preference which OS boots first (pretty sure I can figure this out by using Easy Boot CD). What is the best way to do this? From what I understand Boot Camp only works when you're partitioning ONE hard drive to dual boot. I want to boot off of two separate drives.
    Please help!

sure my boot camp menu sees all hd's connected as possible targets

  • Dual Boot dm-crypt'ed USB Drive?

I'm attempted to dual boot two Arch installs, each with dm-crypt/luks. I've been able to do this with a single Arch on a USB drive...but with both I'm hitting some snags (perhaps just in theory).
    What I'm imagining:
    +----------------------------------+
    /dev/sdb | MBR |
    +----------------------------------+
    /dev/sdb1 | /boot for Arch 1st (Unencrypted) |
    +----------------------------------+
    /dev/sdb5 | Luks for Arch 1 |
    | +------------------------------+ |
    | | / for Arch 1 | |
    | | | |
    | | | |
    | +------------------------------+ |
    +----------------------------------+
    /dev/sdb2 | /boot for Arch 2 (Unencrypted) |
    +----------------------------------+
    /dev/sdb6 | Luks for Arch 2 |
    | +------------------------------+ |
    | | / for Arch 2 | |
    | | | |
    | | | |
    | +------------------------------+ |
    +----------------------------------+
Also, note they wouldn't be using the partition number, but /dev/mapper...etc but the physical partitioning would look like this.
Does this look doable, or has anyone set up something similar before? (i.e. before I spend hours installing and encrypting )
The part I'm not sure about is which Arch install "owns" the grub install? Or does it even matter/can they share the MBR? I.e. Only one of them installs grub to the MBR...the other simple exists with a /boot at some partition that the other Arch install hopefully finds?
    Thanks for any help!

Thanks for the replies, I'm going to try and get this working over the weekend once I have a few hours to spare! I'll report back here with my findings. After looking into it a bit deeper, I think it's possible as well. I may have originally been over thinking it, but time will tell!
As for the why; I'm trying to combine some resources (cause it all comes down to the dollar!) for a work project. We currently have two separate machines (both with VASTLY different setups, yet both running Arch) that I'm trying to combine into a single dual boot machine. I thought about virtualization, or using something like docker but these machines are mutually exclusive (i.e. they never need to be running at the same time) and are both very resource intensive. Both machines use full system encryption as a company policy, and it appears to me that using a dual boot setup would be the most resource efficient and safest bet in the long run.

  • I have a macbook and it is a dual boot system, I would like to be able to see the mac side of the system on a larger monitor.  I can hook to a hdmi cable and see the pc side, but not the mac side, any suggestions?

I have a macbook that I bought second hand.  The mac has a dual boot system with bootcamp on one side and snow leopard on the other.  I would like to be able to hook to a larger hdmi monitor so that in both systems I could see better since on the leopard side the computer has PS4.  I have purchased the dvi to HDMI accessory and purchased the HDMI to DVI cable, and can see fine on the bootcamp side, but nothing on the leopard side.  Could somebody help me with configuring things so that it will see both side?
Also on a minor note, I need to purchase a new battery for this item and don't know which one to purchase.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, especially with the display/monitor issue.
    Thanks Sue
ps sorry but the operating system is OS X

When you try to use the Mac side on your external monitor do you get a blank screen or do you see the aurora background?
It would help to know which one of the 9 different models of MacBook you have. To see which model you have go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier and post it back here.

We have a solaris box which already has Solaris 9.0 version installed.
I'd like to upgrade the same to Solaris 10. However I should be able to use both Solaris 9 and 10 versions in a dual boot mode.
Can any one let me know any links for the same ?
Also I'd like to know any risks associated tot he upgrade.
    Thanks and Regards

No, you can't partition a Time Capsule's internal HD.  Both partitions will back up to the same sparse bundle. keeping the backups for each partition separate.
Time Machine will not take the two OSX partitions as two different computers, but for best results, exclude the Snow Leopard drive from backups on the Lion partition, and exclude the Lion partition from backups on the Snow Leopard partition.
There may be some files on the Lion partition that Time Machine on Snow Leopard won't like, among other things.  See #10 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions for details.

  • Booting two Macs from one external drive: 10.8 and App Store?

I boot two Macs from one external harddrive. Does this mean that when 10.8 is sold exclusively via the App Store and thereby linked to a unique hardware identifier, I am going to have issues with activation/authentification each time I switch machines? I have avoided the App Store since I discovered that an app I bought there, and which I really needed to open automatically on log-in, had to be manually re-activated with my Apple ID after every switch (so that I eventually deleted it and reverted to an earlier, non-App Store version).

    Welcome to the forum!
There are a couple of "solutions" to your problem.  The easiest, and possibly the best for you (although it is a bit slower) is to copy your catalog onto the external drive as well.
Then when you plug in the drive, you will always have your latest catalog for access.
The other way is to keep a local copy of your catalog, and copy it onto the local drive as a way to transfer it from one computer to the other.
This has the problem of possibly not being in sync, that is, you forgot to copy it over once and did some editing.  Then you would end up with essentually two different catalogs, instead of one in two places.
You can copy the catalog either with your OS, or you can "export as catalog" and specify the external drive as the destination.  Then, on your other computer, "import from catalog" and only take the meta-data settings (it's on the import dialog box).
Personally, when I'm traveling, I have my catalog on my external drive as well.  It just makes life easier, and I don't have to worry about it being out of sync, or losing it (and not the images).
So, I would go with the first method, at least to start.  To get your catalog over there, you can either export as catalog or copy it, either one will work.
You can find the location of your catalog file (if you don't know where it is) in the catalog settings menu prompt.  Both the location and the name will be displayed.
    Cheers!

  • How do I install dual-boot Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on one hard disk ?

I tried to install Solaris 8 and Solaris 9 on same disk using CDs, but
the second installation overwrote the first Solaris which was installed
previoudly on the half-disk size partition of same disk.
How do I install two Solarises on one hard disk ?
    Thanks
    Yakov

There are no tricks to get Solaris to dual boot on the same drive. Just allocate and pick the free slices not used by the first Solaris install when you put in the second install. Technically speaking there is nothing preventing you from running seven separately bootable Solaris instances on the same drive (one of 8 available slices is overlap -- slice 2) provided you use a swap file on a root partition instead of reserving a whole slice for swap.

I currently run Mac Pro with three hard drives. Can I dual boot or even triple boot with Snow Leopard on one drive and Mountain Lion or Lion on others?
I need to keep Snow Leopard so that I can run some old softward.

If you are careful you can put at least two on one drive, having Recovery from Lion and Mountain Lion on their own drives though.
CCC can clone Lion Recovery - great for moving or backup.

  • B85-G43 A2 boot error when connecting more then one SATA driver

    Hello everyone please help me.
As the title says, whenever i connect more than one sata driver (hdd or dvd) i get te A2 boot freeze....
Already changed cables, hard drives, and problem persist!
Sorry for my bad english, not my main language.
    Board: MSI b85-g43
    Bios: c.40
    VGA:   amd 7970 black edition
    PSU:   xfx pro1000w
    Intel Core i5-4670K
    MEM: HyperX 1600 8gb
HDD: kingston 120gb ssd and two SATAS
    OS: Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

    Svet, thx for replying.
I'm a noob here and have some doubts about this steps...
1.) >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< (Ok got it.)
A.) Download the attached archive and place it on your desktop. Do not decompress. (Ok got it)
B.) Download and install the Forum flash tool. (MSI HQ Forum USB flasher?)
C.) Insert your FAT32 formatted usb stick. (Ok got it)
D.) Make sure that all win 8 options are disabled. (Fast Boot etc) Also make sure the legacy USB is enabled. (win 8 options??? i'm running on a win7 ultimate 64bit)
E.) Start the forum flash tool and select option 1. Then point the tool at the compressed archive we downloaded earlier. Then to your USB Flash Drive. (Ok got it.)
F.) Boot to the USB and follow the directions. MEMTEST is included with the forum flash tool and it is recommended to run this prior to any flash. (ok got it, change boot sequence to USB and follow the directions.)
Yeah i know a lot of doubts, sorry for that, Working all day and at night i have to go to the university.
    Thank you for your time!!!

  • P35 Neo2 BIOS Settings to run Dual Boot SATA and IDE HD's

    Hi,
I was having intermittent problems with a Gigeabyte so upgraded M/B.
I have an IDE "caddy" with 2 Dual boot HD's (Linux Grub booting XP on sda1 and Fedora9 on sda2), and had no problems with either HD's on old M/B.
The old M/B also had  SATA sockets which I installed a 250GB drive as my main setup.  Dual boot again with same setup.  I set the SATA to "auto" and it detected and ran when no IDE caddy was inserted.
Everything ran OK but I had very intermittent CRC failures that I could not isolate, so I upgrade 2 days ago.
Without inserting any IDE drives I can boot the SATA drive OK into Linux OK  (it also detects an ext3 partition on a seperate /backup partition so the IDE interface works).
If I now try and boot the XP on my SATA drive,  I get the dreaded blue screen.
I assume this is due to me having XP installed without the AHCI support as detailed in other (long) thread showing how to overcome this problem!?
I would also like to know if and I can just boot from my IDE drive (with no SATA's connected),   because even though it seems to detect the PATA HD OK,  I cannot get it to boot from either of them!  I know these HD's have not changed as I have checked both of them on the SATA OS and both Logical volumes are still there and the relevant boot flags are both set.
Even though I have a bit of a complex setup,  this may well be a very simple case of BIOS settings (sorry).
    FYI:
I have a A7345 IMS V1.8 012408 BIOS and my two IDE drives are both dual boot with XP on the first partition.
Both Linux partitions are formatted using Logical Volume Management  (LVM).
    Thanks for your time
Any help/pointers would be appreciated as I am not absolutely sure that the M/B is functional or not.

Thanks for the info,  I am now a bit clearer as to what is happening!
I removed known good IDE HD from caddie and put it directly on the IDE cable (after removing the old non LVM linux IDE disk that was on it).
The newly connected HD was initialized OK and I can see both SAT and IDE disks listed with F11.
On trying to boot from the IDE,  it starts up and decompresses the image,  BUT cannot seem to find the LVM Volume group 03 (which is where my /boot partition is located).
It then gives in and after a while,  boots back to the SATA OK (where the bootloader is also inside the LVM so I can't see why the LVM IDE disk is a problem but the LVM SATA boots OK).
I do remember (late last night) trying with just IDE drive and of course it just hung because it did not have any alternative to boot!
    Any other observations/suggestions?
Apologies its late here and I will not be back for a few hours!
    Regards
