DVD Drive & Burner App Issues

Hey guys, I've searched the forums for several days on this but can't see to find the fix.
I've been running Arch for about 2.5 years, upgrading daily, and all was going well, but yesterday I decided to do a fresh Arch install.  The new install went fine and I'm using it now, but I'm having some troubles with my DVD drive and any CD/DVD burner apps that I try to use.  Those same apps worked perfectly in my old install.
K3b now launches very slowly on the first start but it does detect both, my dvdr, and cdrw drives.  However, on a K3b restart during the same Linux session, it only sees the cdrw drive.  If I reboot and restart K3b, the process is repeated.
Graveman just hangs on trying to detect my drives on the first start, and it has to be killed manually.  It never gets past detecting the first drive.
cdrecord gives this:
$ cdrecord -scanbus
scsibus1:
1,0,0 100) 'PLEXTOR ' 'DVDR PX-740A ' '1.01' Removable CD-ROM
1,1,0 101) 'PLEXTOR ' 'CD-R PREMIUM ' '1.06' Removable CD-ROM
1,2,0 102) *
1,3,0 103) *
1,4,0 104) *
1,5,0 105) *
1,6,0 106) *
1,7,0 107) *
fstab looks like this:
$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
/dev/dvd /mnt/dvd udf,iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/cdrom1 /mnt/cdrom udf,iso9660 ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
/dev/sdb1 /mnt/flash vfat user,noauto,noatime 0 0
/dev/fd0 /mnt/fd0 vfat user,noauto 0 0
/dev/sda6 / ext3 defaults 0 1
/dev/sda7 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda8 /home ext3 defaults 0 1
I didn't have any modules in rc.conf before the new install and all worked well, so I didn't put any there this time either.  I've tried reinstalling K3b, Graveman, and the kernel, but none of that helped.
It seems to me that this all has something to do with the new drive naming scheme, but I'm not sure.
Anyone have any clues on a fix for this one?
Thanks in advance.
oz

Hi, T-Dawg
Yep, graveman still hangs, so it might not really be K3b's fault, but a possible kernel problem instead.  However, the current kernel works fine with the previous version of KDE.  In the bug report mentioned above, someone claimed this issue will be fixed with the 2.6.22 kernel, so I guess we'll know soon enough.
Command line burns work perfectly so I'll keep using that and skip on hard coding the device to sr0 for now.  Might do that if the new kernel doesn't work, though.
Thanks for your help.
oz
Edit:  I've tried k3b 1.0.3-1 that just came out earlier today, but it has the same problem.  Gotta go all the way back to version 1.0.1 to get things working again.

  • DVD Drive Burner

Does anyone know of a good DVD drive burner that I could purchase, that burns faster than the ones on the Macbook pro. Does not have to be Dual Layer but would just like it to burn normal dvd's faster. Also, if there is a region-free one out there it would be awesome.
    Will give points, thanks again

  • Faulty DVD Drive/Burning Software?

Hi, I have a macbook pro and for some strange reason, the DVD drive or the software won't burn any DVD's I try to make. In iDVD, during the burning stages it get to the very near last stages of burning and then it ejects it before it has actually completed burning, thus giving me a blank disk. Also I have Final Cut Pro X which for some reason won't burn onto the DVD's as well. It says that it doesnt like the disk I used. However before it had this issue it was alright using the disk. The software had did have an update bhack in march/april and since that update it hasnt been the same since. The DVD's I have tried to use are Sony DVD-R 4.7GB. I would like some information or advice that could help reslove my problems if possible?

Go to your OS Help Menu.  In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to  your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility.  Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

  • Hp BD CMB UJ141AF CD DVD drive burned CD knocks

My Windows Media Player sounds great, but when I burn a CD from music there, there are knocks on   every song.  I tried 2 different CDs and went to play it on another computer (it's for my sisters to use in cd players).  I just made one on my Dell laptop and it plays perfectly in that one or in this CD/DVD drive.  Where did those knocks come from?  Please help!

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I have downloaded the software and tried to burn the files to disc with it, but it gives the following error:
"An error occured while burning the disc. Most likely the disc is not usable. Usually, these errors happen if the inserted media is not compatible to the drive or of poor quality.
(devWriteProtected)  Could not write to Disc (LBA: 0 Length:32).

The discs i am using are cheap ones that i bought at the supermarket, 100 for £8 or something!
Do you think this could be the problem?

  • Faulty internal DVD drive causing other issues

I have an Intel iMac running 10.6.8, with a Matshita UJ-875 DVD/CD drive.  A few days ago, the DVD drive crapped out, or so I think.  Wouldn't recognize a CD...just spit it out after some whirring.
When I came to work this morning, all I got was the gray screen.  I've done SMC reset, zapped the PRAM a couple times, started in "Safe" mode and ran disk utility...which came up with a couple dozen "permissions" to repair, most involving "Core Services/Remote Management" or "Java/Java Virtual Machines."  After I ran that once, the computer started up, recognized a CD, and even imported songs.  I was amazed.  A 2nd CD was recognized, but I couldn't import from it.  Then right back to spitting out.
So, I've done about everything I can think of - started up with/without peripherals, unplugged from the wall and the computer...the SMC, the PRAM...
At one gray screen point today, the computer actually restarted itself three times at about three minute intervals.
A couple of other things...the "Repair Disk" button in Disk Utility is grayed out.  Only permissions and verify buttons are active.
Part of the problem - I think - was(is) that the faulty drive was somehow not letting the computer fully shut down.
I could certainly be wrong about that, however, but there were some subtle noises at shutdown that didn't seem right.
Any suggestions or hints?  I've ordered an external drive which should arrive tomorrow, if that can somehow assist in the fix...startup disks, etc.

FYI: the drive randomly started working again. It may have something to do with the angle you put the disc in at. Seems to be fine now, though, so I won't look the gift horse in the mouth.

  • DVD not burning music issue

Can anyone help me. I've encountered a very odd problem. I exported a slide show with a music from Iphoto. It's now in quicktime and when I imported it into IDVD it plays with the music and during the preview. It even plays when I open it in quicktime with the music. But the problem arises when I attempt to burn the file through IDVD to a disc. I've tried each time and each time unsuccessfully the audio portion of the slide (which has the music) doesn't burn onto the dvd. The slide show with images burns perfectly, but not the music. Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am having the exact same problem with this slight variation. I made the slide show in Keynote. The music is a soundtrack I downloaded from iTunes. Everything works perfect in preview. When I burn the DVD, the music works fine when the menu is on screen, but when you go to play the slideshow, it stops. So I tried burning it again but this time with the slideshow starting automatically. Again, no music during slideshow, but when you stop the slideshow and go to the menu, the music starts. Arghhh!!!!

  • External dvd drive/burner

I connected a pioneer 106 external drive via usb and it was not recognized. I believe I was told my computer does not have usb 2. Could this be, and if so I can I remedy this. I only have a cd drive internally.

Go to the apple menu ---> about this mac ----> More Information. Look under USB to see if your drive is actually detected. If it is, use Patchburn to enable it. Patchburn is a free program used to help Mac's detect unsupported burners.
If you do get it working, you could always dissassemble the case which takes about 5 minutes. After doing this you will see the IDE Ribbon and Power Connection. You now have an internal drive, swap it with the internal CD if you wish.
    Good Luck

  • Satellite L300D-11A - DVD-drive issue and Blue Screen

    Hi
I'm going out of my mind :o//
My Satellite L300D-11A was delivered with a Windows Vista Home Premium, but I recently made a clean installation of the Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bits.
Since then I have had problems with "Blue screen error's" comming randomly. Have purchased and installed a Registry clean up program, but that did not fix the problem. Any one else with that problem - and a possible solution.
And now for my big problem. My CD and DVD drive is driving me crazy ;o) It's a Mat****a DVD-RAM UJ-850S ATA and from my search on the internet I have found that a lot of other Mat****a owners have had the same or similar problem(s). My drive will not regonize or play/read from CD's. DVD with movies or programs I can play. Burning CD's is not possible and burning DVD's is sometimes working, and other times not.
I have read about the different fixes that is posted - also here on the Toshiba forum - Non of the suggested solutions is working for me - any new solutions that I could try.
Seriously thinking about buying a external USB DVD drive/burner - but can someone please tell me why Toshiba does not get the fingers out off their B** and find a solution like it seams Sony has done.
Look forward to any reply ;o))
Someone once told me about this quote - "Don't wish it was easier - work on getting clever !" I need your help to get clever ;o))

    > But I do not now how/where to get the registration keys! I have tried looking for them.
Are you talking about *Upper/Lower Filters* ?
Follow these instructions for clearing the Upper/Lower Filters:
Click on Start --> Run --> and type in 'regedit' followed by the enter key
Expand the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" key (looks like a folder) by double clicking it (or clicking the "+" next to it.)
    Expand the "SYSTEM" Key
    Expand the "CurrentControlSet" Key
    Expand the "Control" Key
    Expand the "Class" Key
    Please look for a key containing the following string of letter and numbers:{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
High light this key by left clicking once on it
On the right hand side you are looking for "UpperFilters" and "LowerFilters" under the "Name" column, once you find these please delete them by right clicking on them and choosing "delete"
Please exit the registry by clicking on the "X" in the top right hand corner of the screen
    Reboot your computer

  • Itunes installation causes my DVD drive to disappear

    Hello,
I wondered if anyone had any advice for me. Every time install Itunes on my Sony Vaio laptop the installation automatically uninstalls my DVD drive. I spoke to Sony and they said this was common and took me through a process of deleting two files that the Itunes installation adds to my computer. Deleting these files then allows me to reinstall my DVD drive.
The issue I have is in doing this it corrupts the Itunes, in that it says it can't burn the music and I have to reinstall it...but reinstalling Itunes only takes of my DVD drive!
Has anyone experiences similar problems and could you please offer me some advice? Thank you
    Vicky

does show up as a disk drive in device manager
are there any alert/warning messages next to the drive in Device Manager? in particular, are you seeing a code 41 message?

  • Wrong DVD drive opens on 2009 Mac Pro

    Hello,
I have a 2009 Mac Pro with two DVD drives.  Since upgrading to Mavericks, I've noticed some unusual behavior:
    1.  Ocassionally, the incorrect DVD drive ejects/opens. For example, when I attempt to open the top drive, the bottom one opens, and vice-versa.
    2.  Ocassionally, when I simultaneously burn 2 DVDs of the same items, I find that one of the DVD drives burns all of the items without problems, while the other one only burns a small number of the items.
    3.  After inserting a blank DVD, and selecting the "Burn (item name) to disc" from the right-click menu, a long time passes before the "Are you sure you want to burn..." dialogue box appears.
Has anyone else experienced this constellation of symptoms?  Are they connected?  And what sorts of remedies have worked?
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi-
A PRAM reset should clear that up.
Did it for me in the past.

  • Installed new DVD drive, now iBook will not charge

    Hi guys,
I'm a long-time Mac user, and this is the first time I've had any problems so I'm new to this board. I had a bit of a look around, both on this forum and the FAQs, and this appears to be a unique problem.
Basically, for a while my iBook CD drive was spitting out CDs, as per a common problem which I was not able to resolve. Eventually the tray broke and it would not click back into place, and so I was left with an iBook with a CD tray constantly popped out.
I ordered a new DVD drive/burner that claimed it would fit an iBook, and when it arrived I pulled apart my laptop and installed it. Everything appeared to be in order, until I tried to plug in the AC adaptor.
The orange light goes on for about 10-15 seconds, then slowly fades away to nothing. If I unplug and plug it back in straight away, I get no light and no charge. If I wait 15 minutes, the orange light goes back on but once again fades after a short period of time.
My first thought is that perhaps the DVD drive is incompatible/drawing too much power, but I can't figure out how this would affect the charger, and why the problem would persist whether the power is on or off.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this? I don't hold much hope that this will be fixed without expensive surgery, but I'd like to try
    iBook G3, PowerPC G5, iPod   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi Ronda, thanks for the response. I've pulled it apart a couple of times and have put it back together via the instructions I downloaded on the internet both times, and have had the same problem. To be honest, I can't answer that! I'll have to pull it apart this afternoon again to check.

  • CD/DVD Drive Drivers for HP Pavilion DV7-4152si

    Hi guys
I have a HP Pavilion DV7-4152si and i am trying to reinstall windows on a completely new HDD.
My previous HDD blew up and i never made a recovery disk.
i tried to get the CD/DVD Drive driver on HP's website but cant find anyhing of te sort could somebody please advise me on what to do.

That usually indicates that the DVD drive has an issue.
You can try updating the firmware to try to resolve the issue, but that usually does not help. You have an older notebook and unfortunately the DVD drive has gone south.
    I recommend:
Testing your notebook's DVD drive by using a live version of Ubuntu on a usb flash drive.
Using an external usb DVD drive or the less expensive solution of creating a usb Windows installer. I usually use the Microsoft store's Windows download\usb tool to do that. the useage instructions and a link to the tool are here.

Installed latest itunes update and computer tried to burn a playlist to CD and realized computer no longer recognizes my CD/DVD drive. After doing some data mining, found out from community this is an long standing APPLE problem- which doesn't get much tech support in terms of fixes. I have an HPPavillion DV6 64 bit, Windows 7 OS . After reading an earlier complaint from 2009 in the support community,  I ran diagnostics from ITunes which gave the following result. Can someone please help? • Multiple issues on '09 MacBook Pro- battery, DVD drive, slowness, browsers

    I have a mid '09 MacBook Pro 2.53GHZ, 4GB RAM, running OS 10.5.8.
Recently, it's begun exhibiting random bad behavior, starting with slow behavior in Finder processes and, especially, very slow behavior and crashing in multiple apps, especially browsers (or maybe i just notice it there more because i use them the most). Then, all of a sudden the battery, which previously was fine and held a good charge, showed as Not Charging. I still have Applecare and called them, and they had me reset the power manager, which restored the battery to charging, but now it runs out quickly and often has strange readings, such as saying it has 6 minutes of charge when it also reads as 99% charged. The readings often have nothing to do with the actual state of the battery.
It's also suddently running a lot hotter and the fan is turning on more often, tho some of that may be that i now have both Google Chrome and Safari running at all times (i switch between them depending on which isn't hanging at any given time- both will crash with crashes of basic plug-ins, or simple non-responding, even tho Chrome is a newly installed app)
In case of system corruption, i decided it was a good time to upgrade to OS 10.6, which i simply hadn't gotten around to (a 10.6 disk came bundled along with with the original 10.5 disks with the Macbook when i bought it in late '09, probably an upgrade, it was right when they were switching over)... but i discovered that now DVDs won't mount either... so i can't install, reinstall, or even run diagnostics.
In disk utility booted from the internal drive, hard drive "verifies" fine and permissions are fine.
I've got a genius bar appointment the next time i go to city with the nearest Apple store- 120 miles away-
but any suggestions or ideas meanwhile?
the hardware issues- DVD drive, power, battery- make me wonder about the logic board's health.
Or could this still all be from OS or hard drive corruption?
And can i boot the Macbook from its Time Machine backup, which is on a firewire external drive, in order to run diagnostics? Not familiar with what Time Machine can and can't do. Otherwise, maybe i can borrow another mac to install OS from DVD to an open partition that's on the firewire hard drive and try to boot/run diagnostics from that (?). If i do that, should i do it with OS 10.5 (what it shipped with, and is currently running) or is it ok to do it with OS 10.6?
I'm also going to try to run in alternate user account to see if the browser etc crashes are as bad (i did try it briefly and found it still slow, tho not so badly).

Have you tried a SMC reset? Do a google search for more info.
