E3000 FTP access question/using Cisco connect after router setup

I have two questions about my E3000 router.
1. If I have already set up my router using the default web address, if I use the Cisco connect software, do I gain any benefit or am I opening up a can of worms? I would like to change my server name and default admin user name stuff, but I don't want to screw with any settings I have. I will be updating my firmware in a day or so, so should I use the software then, or just go about it the way I have already?
2. I have enables FTP access for my USB drive, but I am unsure how to access it from a remote computer. I know using ftp://xxx.xxx.x.x gets me to my Index while connected to my network, but how do I access this off my network? I want to give our parents and family access to pictures, but I''m not sure of the exact address to use. I have looked in the set-up manual, and searched Google and this site, and have found nothing.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Dan

If you have configured your Router using the Cisco Connect software, then you it secure your wireless network with an password. If you have any firewall and antivurs software on your router then it will protect your computers against worms.
To use the FTP feature of your router you need to enable ftp login on your router, which you will find under the storage tab of your router.

  • Remove guest access without using 'cisco connect'

    Hi all,
I just installed a new Linksys E3000 and was able to use "Cisco Connect" up until I decided to forgo the "Wi-Fi Protected Setup" and use manual settings.
Well, after having done this, I can no longer use Cisco connect, and I really want to get rid of the additional "-guest" network which seems to be tagged onto my main network.  Is there anywhere via the browser-based admin that I can get rid of the guest access feature?  If there is, I can't seem to find it.
I tried switching back to the  "Wi-Fi Protected Setup"  feature so I could go back to using connect, however it no longer seems to see my router when I try to connect to it, so this is no longer an option for me.  I'd really like to avoid reinstalling the router all over again.
    thanks for any info.

  • Can I use Cisco Connect if I change the default router IP address?

I am adding my E3000 into an existing network behind a SonicWall firewall.  I am using an address scheme of 192.168.168.xxx  When I change the router address to 192.168.168.10 and disable DHCP in Cisco Connect, I am left with only being able to access the router through the web interface.  This seems pretty lame; I've read other threads on Web vs. Cisco Connect.  Is there a quick fix that will allow Cisco Connect to still find the router after I've made (just) these two changes?
    --David C

Yes you still will be able to use the Cisco Connect software if you have changed the Routers IP address, But if you change the Router password of Wireless Security then you wont be able to use Cisco Connect software.

  • Not allowed to use Cisco Connect anymore. Help?

I recently changed my wireless password, in the advanced settings, to not match my router password. Now that I try to use Cisco Connect, it says that I can not because I changed the a password in the advanced settings. Is there anything i can do to undo this change?

If you change the password of the router or wireless network using the setup page of the router then Cisco connect software will stop working. You can change the router password to match with Wireless network password.
Open the setup page of the router. Go to Administration tab and change the router password.
See if that makes Cisco connect to work. If not then I think you will need to reset the router and reconfigure it.

  • Using Cisco Connect

I am trying to change the password on my Guest Account but am having no luck.  I do not have a key and when I click on the Cisco Connect icon it tells me ....
"The router password or wireless settings have been changed using advanced settings.  This applies the changes directly to the router and you can no longer use Cisco Connect."
Inserting the set up CD get me nowhere as it thinks the router was set up on another PC.  Not the case.  So, what do I need to do to move forward?  Is there a logical reason as to why this activity is not part of the router interface?  Is there a plan to change this debacle?

Found out that I must reset the router and start from scratch to get into guest account settings.  I just can't believe Cisco would set up a product this way.  Oh well.  You pays your money and takes your chance......

  • E3000 questions. Cisco Connect with https and turn off wireless?

My old router died this weekend after 10 years and I have been wanting to get a faster router for a while anyways.
I picked up a E3000 and set it up yesterday.
    The firmware is 1.0.03
    I have two main questions
I changed the router settings so you can only browser manage the router through https and turned off http access to the router.
Cisco Connect now doesn't work. Will Cisco Connect work with HTTPS? Do I have to do something to get it to work?
I also didn't see a version number on Cisco Connect am I just not noticing it?
I'd really like to shut off wireless on most days when I'm not home. I want the router to still be working since my desktop computers are directly connected to the router and I remote into them. Is there an easy way to shutoff the wireless and then easily turn it back on when I get home?
    thanks
    mike

Mine works the same. It's probably designed that way for the manual way of logging into the setup page of the router.
No, it seems no updates yet or see the need to have one.
No, it doesn't have that option unfortunately.

  • Manually managing E3000 / not using cisco connect software

ok  now i have totally by pass the cisco connect  software, and manually managing my e3000 / updating the firmware manually  and i have the ssid disabled due to people trying to connect to our router all the time and our router is password protected (wpa/aes) i need to know if manually managing the network is a good idea or not i've manage other linksys routers in the network page, i am finally able to connect and i get my full download speed 10MB/Second  now  before i was getting 5MB/second and upload speed is at a good 1MB/second before i was getting 0.3MB/second are these good speeds or what i dont know i've also ran a few test - both the hdtv & xbox on at the same time running the same item (netflix's ) both at the same speed

For better wireless connection, use WPA2 with AES security.
I think disabling the SSID broadcast will make any difference.
You can also try changing the advanced wireless settings on the router.
Connect the computer to the router with the Ethernet cable. Open the setup page of the router and go to Wireless tab. Click on Advanced wireless settings sub tab. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS and Fragmentation threshold to 2304. Save the settings.
Click on Setup tab and change the MTU size to 1365.Save the settings and power cycle the router.
Now observer the wireless connection and see if that makes any difference.
Also make sure that your router is running on latest firmware.

  • Cisco 886 VA initial set up question - unable to connect to router

    Hallo,
I am trying to set up my Cisco 886 VA router, but after approx 5sec of "network identification" the network status on my PC is disconnected and I cannot access the router at 10.10.10.1 . The FE port blinks green during this time, then stops and the overall status is green.
I tried 4 different PCs, have DHCP enabled, all directly connected to one of the FE ports vie ethernet cabel. I also tried fixed IP setting (10.10.10.2 with 255.255.255.248, gateway 10.10.10.1), same result. I also tried hardware reset. And tried to connect via the configuration professional client that would just hang up.
Any idea what I might be doing wrong? Please be gentle if its a stupid question, I am new to networking
    Thanks & regards
    Helge

Sorry for not responding, I went on vacation
I finally figured it out: the factory setting of the 886 has no IP address assigned and all FE ports are shut down.
This means the only way to connect to it is like Alain suggest via console, then assign the IP address to VLAN1 and open the FE ports.
I realize now that the Cisco 8xx serie is not for retail customers, but requires learning the Cisco IOS CLI - I am gioing through this now step by step, long journey, especially because I have VDSL IPTV with T-online as my goal
The only thing that troubles me: the Cisco documentation that came with the product clearly stated that the router comes with pre-configured IP enabled Fastehternet port and suggested this as a method to do the initial set up. It would be nice to update those docs to reflect that the only way to connect is the console via COM and hypertm.
Thanks for the resoponses, this topic can be closed - I just added this response in case someone searches for the topic.

  • Using Cisco Connect with several E1000 routeres

I have two E1000 routeres, one at home and one at the office, and I have installed the Cisco Connect (CC) software on my laptop, and used it to congifure both devices with.
The first time I tried to connect CC to the router at the office, it removed the settings from my home router, and accessed the E1000 ok and I could configure it without any problems via CC.
But when I now tries to use CC to configure my home router via CC, it keeps complaining about me not beeing connected to the right router, and CC won't allow me to connect to my home router eventhough I type in the correct password etc.
Does anybody know of a trick to use the same CC for configuring multiple E1000's ? Or how to get CC to "forget" its settings and connect to a new E1000 router?
    Thanks.

So the concern that you said is the configuration of the Router ( E1000 ) at home.. So could please inform us the name of the ISP( Internet Service Provider )... So it all depends upon the ISP( Internet Service Provider ) setup...
If you want to configure the router with the help of the CD so for that you need to uninstall the existing Cisco Connect Software from the computer...
Reset the Router and power cycle the network...
Make the following connectivity Modem ----> Router -----> Computer... Then install the Cisco Connect Software... It will help you in configuring the Router...

  • Using Cisco Connect with 2 different Routers

I have the linkys n300 E1200 at my office and the Linksys E1000 at my home.  How do i configure Cisco Connect to work with both of these routers so i don't have any connectivity issues?

You can only have one Cisco Connect software installed on your computer. What are your challenges with the Linksys routers? Are you experiencing slow connection? Or intermittent connection? Does it occur on both routers? Since the two routers are on two different locations, we need to properly isolate this matter to know what is really causing it.
Updating the router's firmware will help in resolving connectivity difficulties. If the wireless connection drops, you can also try adjusting the wireless channels of the router. I am using channel 9 for my EA4500 router. Make sure as well that the router is being placed on a higher location or less interference area.

  • Trying to give remote user FTP access to external HDD connected to my iMac

This gets a little complicated, so bear with me.
I have an external hard drive connected via FireWire to my iMac. I have a remote user that I want to be able to access this hard drive via FTP.
Here's what I've done so far:
    1) I've given the iMac a static IP on the local network.
    2) I've forwarded port 21 to said IP address via my Airport Extreme.
    3) I've given the user her own account on my iMac.
    4) I've turned on file sharing in System Preferences, and the user has read & write permissions. I've also enabled FTP access to the iMac.
    5) I've added the external drive to the Shared Folders list, and given the user read & write permissions.
When the user attempts to FTP into my iMac, she is prompted for a user name and password. She authenticates and is redirected to her home folder on my iMac. She can read and write to this folder, but the external drive is nowhere to be found.
I'm sure I've just missed a small detail. Does anyone have any ideas?

I came up with a work around, if anyone is interested.
In user accounts system preferences, I edited advanced options for the user I want to give access to. I changed the location of her home directory to the external hard drive. Now every time she logs in, she's directed straight to the external.

  • Computer dsl connection after router hookup

I am very confused.  Have a home computer with dsl connection.  I went thru the CD directions and hooked up my wireless router.  Everything seemed fine, but when I went to go to the internet (aol mail, etc.) my dsl connection was gone.  I lost my dsl connection.  Couldn't get ANY help at the 800 tech support.  So i unplugged the router wires and put everything back the way it was.  Then I could get dsl connection, and went to the online website 24-hour support.  Told them everything that happened, and all I got was "I am sorry for the inconvenience", then silence.
Why do I lose my regular dsl connection after I hook up the wireless router???  Am i doing something wrong?  HELP!

Before doing the following steps, you have to connect the modem to the
router's Internet Port and the computer to the Ethernet Port Number 1.
    1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
    2. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for

  • Can't connect to router setup page

    Hi,
I have a WRT54G wireless router, version 2.1. It's been working fine for the last 3 years and suddenly the WLAN light is out and there's no communication between router & computer. I've tried resetting it (via reset button, and unplugging power) a million times with no results. A techie thought maybe I needed a firmware upgrade -- which I've downloaded, but now I still have to access the setup page to install it, which seems to be impossible. The 192.168.1.1 page won't come up at all. (And when I went into the command prompt, it said my Default Gateway was 207.237.223.1 -- which, of course, I've tried, but that won't come up either.) I've turned off firewalls and antivirus programs, thinking they might be the problem -- still nothing. Any suggestions/advice would be MUCH appreciated! Thanks in advance!

You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.
