E4200 USB Storage Issue - Connection drops / router hangs

I'm having issues with maintaining a reliable connection to the USB drive connected to my new E4200.  Here are the situation:
(1)  I can successfully share the drive and map it from any computer on the network as expected
(2)  After mapping the drive, I try to copy files/folder to the mapped drive.  It starts off ok, but within a few seconds/minutes, I'll begin getting the message "the specified network name is no longer available".  The drive status will show "disconntected" or "reconnecting"
(3)  When this happens, the router will often stop accepting new connections (i.e. the DHCP function stops working).  However, some of the computer that are connected continue to work / have internet access.
(4)  Restarting the router (i.e. pulling the power and plugging it back in) gets things working again.  Things are good until I try to map the drive and begin copying files again.
Here's some other parameter info:
(a)  I'm running the latest (only) firmware available: 1.0.00 build 13
(b)  Per Linksys support, I've reflashed the firmware.  Didn't make any difference
(c)  I'm working in a wired environment (this is not a wirelss issue...although it happens via wireless the same way)
(d)  I'm running Win XP SP3 (have also tried on Vista HE 64...same results)
(e)  The USB disk is a Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 TB (which is on the list of compatible devices for this router)
(f)  I do most of my work at the command line with NET USE commands.  The files are being copied via ROBOCOPY and or XCOPY.  Just basic scripting.  Note:  I get the same results if I use Windows Explorer to map/copy files.
(g)  I've validated the Seagate drive is not the issue by plugging in the the computer and using it for several days.  Have had no issues copying files to it  It's formatted as NTFS.  Chkdsk and SeaTools show no issues with the drive.
(h)  I am copying large volumes of data (i.e. entire folders of movies, backups of "USERS" folder, etc.).
(i)  It's not any one paritcular file or folder this issue occurs on.  It will make a little progress, then flake out.  Upon restarting, it will make a little more, then flake out, etc.
(j)  Just to be safe, I turned off the sleep mode/spin down option on the FreeAgent drive to ensue that wasn't the problem.
(k)  I haven't made any elaborate router settings (haven't changed many defaults).  Haven't turned on FTP, Media Server functions, etc.  I've just done some basic things like (1) change the ssid (2) set up some DHCP reservations (3) changed the security to WPA2 (4)  changed admin password (5) set up port forwarding for two apps.  I've not created any policies, turned on guest accounts, enabled logging, etc.
(l)  I am doing all of the above with an admin account (on the router, I created an admin user acccount for myself).  I've been careful to always map the drive with that userid/password.
Is anyone else having reliability issues with access to thier attached USB storage.  I was very hopeful that the storage attached to the router would be readily available.  I'm not expecting or needing great performance, but do need it to be "always on" for the purposes of sharing files and executing backups.  Eventually, I would like to use some of the other features of the router (streaming video the PS3 and external FTP access for example).  However, for now, I just want the attached storage to work.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

oops, well now i see your full question. i asked you some ?s in the other thread you posted in.. but they seemed to be answered here..
ok, solely speaking about this E42 router, i have had it for 2 weeks now and i had a buffalo 500gb drive on the usb port. i had all sorts of junk on the drive..just random files, etc, and the ones that were supported by the PS3 would stream fine form the drive. i even have a sony BD player (s770) and its able to see the files and drive and stream. the PS3 is wired and the BD player is wireless. i have a laptop (wireless) and it has the same results.
last night i purchased a seagate go flex 2TB and plan to ONLY put media type files on this drive and try and clean things up and stop being lazy.. so far i have transferred a FEW small video and audio files from a wired computer with zero issues.
now let me ask, when you are transferring these huge files, are you like copying a folder and pasting it onto the mapped seagate drive? or are you doing individual files, etc? i dont have a folder with a bunch of GBs of files but i will try and see if i can reproduce the problem you see.
however thus far with the few small media files i have transferred on this new go flex 2TB drive, they have all transferred over. im talking about a couple GBs worth -ish...

  • E4200 - USB Storage limit of 2TB

Does anyone know if Linksys will be increasing the size limitation of the E4200 USB storage devices?
Will the next firmware allow larger drive sizes?
I only bought the thing to share via the router my digital content that is stored on an 8TB external device.
What is the perpose to the limit in the first place?  Is this a hardware or software limitation of the device?
Any answers would be appreciated.  I love the router, I just hate limitations...go figure.
    Thanks.

What is the firmware version on the router? As there is a new release of the firmware which adds the supports of 3TB Hard drive with NTFS and HFS+ format.
As well as here is the list of tested USB storage devices for the Linksys E4200

does e4200 have cifs support. I ask because I have a hard drive connected thru the usb and trying to setup nas storage. But for the hp touchpad to mount it it needs cifs I guess.

Yes E4200 does support CIFS (Common Internet File System) for the storage Hard Drive…Here is the link for the external USB storage devices tested to work with the router, along with their disk storage formats.

  • E4200 - USB Storage with Media server

    Pros: Decent basic router
Cons: Advanced features don't work, not worth the price, poor support, critical forum posts deleted
Other Thoughts: The Linksys e4200 is supposed to be a high-end router, with media server capabilities. It is NOT. The media server feature does not work and has not worked correctly since product release. Linksys keeps promising a fix, but customers are still waiting. Support forum members have been pressing the company for a solution, but Linksys merely deletes critical post from the forums. This is apparently their idea of how to "fix" the problem.
There are certain features that make a router a high-end purchase. If usb storage with media server capability is one of the features you are looking for, you should avoid this product.

    Hi,
USB HDD uto 1 TB with file system NTFS ot FAT32 works just fine, if any issues try taking up the back up for the data already present on the HDD and then try to format the HDD using the router''s formatting tool available under set up page - Storage...

  • Apps to USB Storage issue on A2107A-f

Running in to an issue trying to move apps to USB storage.  When I move the app to USB storage, the icon disappears from the display screen. The app is still on the device and can be found if I look under the App folder, but no longer shows up on the customizable screens.  On the other hand, any apps that remain under Tablet storage still show up on the customizable screens. This wouldn't be such a problem for me if it wasn't for the fact that of the 8GB storage on this device, 2.29GB is allocated for internal or Tablet storage.  So, it doesn't take long to fill up that space with apps.
Would appreciate any help.  I did try calling Lenovo tech support and that was fruitless.

I have the exact problem. There is no solution according to my tech.

  • IPhone 5 No Service Issue (Connected/Dropped Cellular) Help please :)

    Hi Apple Forums!
    I have a iPhone 5 (16gb) with Verizon Wireless.
Last week, while at the hair dresser, i was using my iPhone just fine and than boom, no service. I looked outside and noticed it was a little dark and stormy so i assumed weather was messing with my cell service. When the weather cleared up, my phone showed the 5 single bars, but all of them were empty. Not only that, but, my phone went through a cycle of "LTE" "3g" "1X". Confused, i plugged my iDevice into my computer and did a fresh restore. Set the phone up as a new iPhone (mainly because i don't have anything important on my phone).  As soon i was on the welcome to my new iPhone screen, i noticed in the top corner it already said no service. At this point i concluded that my SIM card might be going bad. The next morning i drove to Verizon and they told me that it's common for SIM's to go bad after a year of use(purchased the phone in May of 2013). Replacing the SIM card did not seem to help. The phone continuously/randomly had full service than dropped to no service and had the same symptoms as i experienced earlier. After this, i took the next logical step, i set up a repair with apple. I shipped my iPhone out to apple. After testing, apple explained to me that my iPhone passed all of their tests with no problems. I'm sure after hearing this anyone would be excited to get their phone back! After getting the phone out of the box and powering it on, i was thrilled to see signal. Knowing apple said they did not replace the phone or make any modifications, i was still a little skeptical but hoping apple was right. So around 5 minutes of having the phone powered on/ re-installing my apps, the phone's filled bars were empty, about 30 seconds after they dropped empty, the dreaded "No Service" appeared on my notification bar. Before i receive reply's asking to call Verizon and check signal strength in my city, i have two other phone's in my household, one being an iPhone, with Verizon. Both of the other phone's don't have cellular problems. Although my iPhone was said to pass the tests, are i not safe to assume that there is a hardware flaw in my phone? I'm an apple care customer so my hardware issues should be covered. Although apple is not able to replicate my problem, it does not mean that my device is not working. I cannot take the phone to an apple store due to my location. Has anyone had similar problems with the iPhone? I'm currently using an android device as a temporary replacement and it's driving me insane. I don't like the phone but as most of you know, phone's are important in modern day life. Has anyone had similar problems? If so, how did you go about solving it. I really want to use my iPhone again. I belive it is an internal error, maybe the motherboard is going bad? the antenna? i just am a little confused on how the apple tech's did not find the issue. Anyways thanks for the read and future comments:) best of luck to the all of you Cheers

If you have already had your phone checked and there is no hardware or software problem, then anything to do with service is a carrier issue and you need to contact your carrier.
Nobody here can help you with this because you need to contact your phone company/carrier instead.

  • E4200 usb storage extremely slow over wireless

    Hi,
I get about only 500 KB/s for accessing files (as a network drive), regardless of the size of the file (even full 4GB iso)
If I watch a video via media server however I get around 3MB/s.
This is very strange and I cannot locate the issue.
My firmware is currently on 1.00 and I am not upgrading due to the notorious media server problem.
Has anyone else encounter this before?
    Cheers

If the concern is with the wireless connection then do the following changes...
You can use same wireless network name or even you can use different network name...
For Channel Settings of 2.4 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11..
For Channel Settings of 5 GHz you can make Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 40 or 161...
Then click on Security tab disable SPI Firewall Protection, uncheck Filter Anonymous Internet Requests...
If there is any anti-virus or firewall disable them all as well...
    And then check connectivity...

Hi and welcome to the forums!
GREAT FIRST POST!! Very clear and specific. You don't know how rare that is
Is the laptop in a docking bay?
Content "encryption" meaning Content protection is turned off, right?
Are you able to backup and sync with the Desktop software?
Do you have the correct folders on the card?
Blackberry, music, ringtones, pictures, videos, voice notes?
    (blackberry has to be first).
Last one, how did you format the card?

  • Can't connect to USB Storage on WRT610N

I'm using Windows Vista and I can't connect to my USB storage device connected to my WRT610N.  Following the instructions provided, I select Network from the Start Menu.  The instructions read to select WRT610N from the computer category and not from the network infrastructure categoy.  WRT610N is visible.  When selected the Connect to WRT610N username and password window appear.  I type my current router password and the Okay button remains grayed out.  The window remains reading Connecting to WRT610N with no progress.
    How do I connect.

Disable firewall and anti-virus software on your computer. Try to follow the procedure below regarding Windows Vista.
    Click Start
    Click Network
You will be notified if file sharing is turned off. Click the message.
Click Turn On network discovery and file sharing.
Double click wrt610n listed in the Computer Category.
If you do not see the wrt610n listed in the Computer Category, then enter the default server name, wrt610n in the Search Field, and press the Enter Key.
In the username and password field, enter the default username and password, admin.

  • WRT600N USB Storage Problems Solved

For a couple of years, I've been living with all the problems others have reported with the WRT600N USB storage - lost connections, permissions problems, rebooting the router to recover access to the USB drive, etc. I solved my problems, mostly, by switching to a DLink DIR-655 router. I assume other routers in the Dlink family that support USB devices will perform similarly.
My main problem seemed to be interference from the microwave, which is in an open kitchen/keeping room arrangement in my house. However, the bottom line is that any time I lost wireless connectivity to the router, due to the microwave or unknown causes, I'd lose access to the USB drive. This meant a trip upstairs to power cycle the router and the USB drive several times a day.
With the Dlink, I still sometimes lose wireless connectivity due to the microwave or unknown causes, but not as often. Sometimes, but not always, this will cause me to lose the USB drive access. If I do need to reboot the router, I can do so from the web based interface, something that was not possible with the WRT600N, so no more trips upstairs to perform this operation. I also find have a stronger wireless signal in my work location with the Dlink.
Dlink uses a SharePort software utility to manage the USB connection and this has to be installed on all PC's that want access to the USB device. SharePort makes a USB device appear to be a local device attached directly to the computer you're using and you can attach external drives/printers/probably USB hubs. (I've experimented only with an external USB drive.) Because of this, however, only one computer can attach to the USB device at a time - not a problem for me, but you need to be aware. The software has a mechanism for requesting access to the USB device from one computer, when the device is in use by another computers. You can also set it to automatically connect to the USB device if its available, to try a reconnect if connection is lost, and to automatically run a program when the USB device connects. Dlink says SharePort will support FAT or NTFS formatted drives and there's no known limitation on the drive size.
Dlink support doesn't seem much better than here - it took about three weeks for me to get an answer on the external drive size and formatting options. There are plenty of complaints on the Dlink support site about poor support, poor performance of SharePort, etc.  So, all I can say is their router/USB device sharing has worked much better for me than my Linksys WRT600N ever worked.

Welcome to the WRT600N nightmare. The Storage Link is poorly documented, and the firmware controlling it has issues. Basically, it will corrupt file date/times stamps whenever you copy files onto the attached drive. It has also been known to be a bit flaky about maintaining the drive as a connected/mapped drive. Backup programs may have difficulty accessing the drive via Storage Link. Depending on the file format you use, you may encounter file size limitations on the Storage Link drive.
I, personally, gave up after a few days of these issues mentioned above and bought extra USB hard drives for each computer in the house rather than try and use the Storage Link as a NAS.
What O/S are you using on your computer? I can try and walk you through the setup.

  • WRT350N - USB Storage; How to??

    Hello all,
This is the first time I have entered this forum! It looks excellent.
A week ago I bought myself a wireless-N router, the WRT350N. I bought this one because of the excellent reviews and most of all because of the USB-storage link.
This router works very fine. I have already connected my HP C5180 All In One.
However, now I want to connect my external hard drive. This is untill now not successfull. I hope someone can help me.
    I'm running:
    - notebook from HP, the DV9870ED with Windows Vista.
    - external drive, a Western Digital My Book Essential Edition 250 GB with USB 2.0. This external HD is not empty. The File System is NTFS.
When I look 'in' the router I can see my External HD. As far as I know I have shared it. I have not claimed it, because in my opinion it looks like this will erase the HD and it is stored with important data. What is the next step or what are the next steps?
Please, can someone hand out a tutorial or a step-by-step manual?
    Thanking you in advance.
    Kind Regards.

    Hi,
NTFS works. No need to reformat, existing data is safe (unless you use Linksys to erase it).
On the first tab "Disk", have you done "Create Share"?
On the next tab "Shares", it should show the HD under "Share Name" as "All_Partitions".
Press "Create New Share", give it a "Share Name" and save.
You might have to set permissions under "Share Access".
Under the tab "Administration", set the "Machine Name" and "Workgroup Name" I used the same WG as my network.
Under "User Management", "User Name / Properties", set a password.
You can also setup "FTP Server", both local and internet access.
It's a couple of month since I set mine up.
    Good luck,
    dRdoS7.

  • Cannot Access USB Storage on WRT610N From My Computer

    Hi ,
I am uable to access my files on the USB Storage Device connected to WRT610. Its configured properly. I can see the drive on my network. When I double click it asks for password which I enter and it takes me to the shared folder. But when I click it it says Not Accessible....You donot have the persmission. FTP works fine.
I have noticed that on the disk page in the Shared Folder Area when you click on the Summary, the box with Groups With Access is Empty. Whereas on the FTP area in the same summary it clearly mentions the admin group.
I have tried every thing including factory reset, hard reset, using new group, new user name etc...but no joy.
The technician from Linsys even spent an hour on my computer and ultimately he gave up and gave me number to contact technical support.
Any Ideas Guys. Its driving me mad!!!
    Regards
    Nilesh

Let me know the current firmware version in the Router? If the firmware in the Router is an older version then upgrade it with the latest one which can be downloaded from the Linksys/Cisco website. After successful firmware upgrade you need to reset the Router. It is recommended to reset the router once. Steps to reset the router:
Push the reset button on router for 30 seconds, turn off the router wait for 30 seconds and then power it on. Power light should blink when you perform the reset process.
After reset, reconfigure the router and then check the connectivity status of the storage..
NOTE: Before upgrading the firmware must disconnect the USB DRIVE. As the drive connect may corrupt data on the drive, so as a precaution make sure the user safely disconnects the drive by using the button in the Storage page that says Safely Remove Disk

  • E4200v2 - Files on USB Storage keeps getting deleted

    I have a Linksys E4200v2 is running firmware 2.1.39.145204.
I'm attaching a 3TB Seagate Expansion external hard drive (STBV3000100) to it.
    I've made 2 partitions on the hard drive: a 2TB HFS+, and a 1TB FAT32
My issue is that the at random times, files on my 2TB partition keep getting deleted.
My house runs all macs so we won't need NTFS, but in order to store files larger than 4GB, we want to keep at least a part of the drive using HFS+.
Has anyone encountered a similar issue before? I can't really pinpoint when it happens... sometimes I'll check the hard drive and see that all my folders and files have been deleted. I know it's not much to go on, but hopefully someone has seen something like this...
I have Media Server turned on, and FTP turned off.

I've noticed similar issues with Mac's and NTFS when you disconnect and reconnect USB external drives.
    Recommendations:
    Reformat drive NTFS if necessary.
Once the USB drive is connected to router never disconnect it without using the safe disconnect button or power off the router first.
Only plug the drive back into the Mac as a last resort but instead access it exclusively through the network.

  • Problem about EA6700 USB Storage

I am using a USB2.0 disk on the EA6700(plug in the usb2.0 slot of the router).
I can copy file to the usb disk from computer and play movie file on computer directly from the usb disk.
But when I want to delete the file in the usb disk. The windows7 system pop up an alert said I need some kind of authority to delete the file.(the file that I just copy into usb disk from computer few minutes ago)
The alert window shows:You need the Linksys\admin authority to delete this file.
But sometimes the alert is:You need the Unix User\admin authority to delete this file.
So I go to check the router config.
USB Storage > Folder Access > Secure Folder Access(already turned ON) and there are 2 authorized users:admin(read & write) and guest(read only)
USB Storage > FTP Server(already turned ON) and "FTP Port 21" and "Encoding UTF-8"
USB Storage > Media Server(already turned ON)
Now I have to plug in the usb disk on computer when I want to delete file.
How can I directly delete it when it`s on the router? How can I have the authority?
    Thanks very much!
