Editing a .fla

Last night I was messing around with an HTML/Flash template a
friend of mine sent me through email. This is a pretty high quality
and professional looking website that I'm looking to edit and
insert into my own site. My problem is this; first I tried editing
the swf file that came with the template, didn't get anywhere, and
eventually found out that I can only edit .fla files (which I
have). The fla looks something like this:

Cool. I want to change the text links at the bottom though.

I can't seem to edit them, at all. I select the Text Tool
with the intention of changing the letters, and all I can ever do
is create a new text box. Any idea why? thanks!
*one more thing - Do I create the hyperlink within Flash 8,
or do I do that in Dreamweaver? Sorry for the amateurish questions,
I got the Macromedia suite for dirt cheap through my .edu, so I'm
tryin to learn as much as I can on my own. Thanks!

sounds like the layer is locked or the text field is nested -
make sure all layers are locked except
for the one you want to edit - i some cases there could be a
graphic on a top layer that has
transprency that will will be selected even though it is
invisible - lock all other layers.

Problem Editing a .fla

I am building a website and I happen to come across a flash intro movie on templatemonster.com and so i began editing it. Here is the actual movie itself: http://images.templatemonster.com/screenshots/18000/18003.html
All I am editing is the text in the movie in Flash CS4, and when I export the video the first second of the movie scraps one of the sound files and sounds like it is speeding it up like a scribble sound, and some of the text i edit looses the correct reflection affect, and instead of reflecting properly the text looks like it is overlapping each other on the bottom of the letters and the reflection overlaps slightly over the bottom of the actual text.
I have worked with previous versions of flash, but I am not sure why just from editing text that the sound messes up.

Since no one knows how your FLA is contructed, and it could
be constructed in dozens of different ways, it's darn near
impossible to advise you. Is there a separate layer which contains
invisible boxes as the actual active buttons? It sort of almost
kinda looks like that from your images. If that's so, then you just
need to select each button area individually and move them. Or go
back to your original FLA, make sure all layers are unlocked and
visible, select everything in every layer, and then use your free
transform tool to resize.
If the FLA isn't too huge, then zip it up, post it somewhere
and someone here might be able to look at it for you.
And please inform which version of Flash you're using.

How to edit movie clip in fla library?

I'm attempting to edit some fla files that have embedded
movie clips. I can't figure out how to edit the movie clip files in
the library. I tried exporting the file to SWC file but can't edit
that.
Can anyone tell me how this is done? Do I need seperate
source fla files that maybe I don't have for the movie clip files?

Thanks for your reply. That's what I would normally do but I
think the original programmers of this site did every thing they
possibly could to make it difficult for a non-expert to edit. I've
edited many flash sites but this one is ridiculous.
I just can't find all the images that make up the movie clip
to edit. I've looked through every layer and double clicked on
everything. I've ran out of ideas.
If anyone wants a challenge I'd be happy to send you the .fla
file just to see what I'm talking about. You can't edit
anything.

What zip format does FLA files use, and is there a API for editing them?

I really need to programmatically modify FLA file. I understand that they are some kind of ZIP archive, but 7-zip cannot open them at all, and although WinRAR and Windows Explorer will open the archives, it will report that the archive is corrupt if you try to extract or update some files. This makes it very difficult for me to edit existing FLA files.
The XFL format is not a solution.
I would be happy to have a way to modify one of the XML files in the FLA file, for example to perform batch modification of a referenced SWC component's path (since the file name was updated, and it's referenced by hundreds of FLA source documents).

Editing an SWF or FLA file

I have both the FLA and SWF files for a website template I
bought. I am trying to edit the file in Flash CS4 using the
following instructions. But I never see any of this code - all I
get are errors and the Movie timeline. How do I get to the code to
modify it? I'm a total novice at Flash but I want to learn.
Flash CS3/CS4 - additional changes
There are some differences between Flash MX 2004 and Adobe
Flash CS3, and therefore you need to make some small changes to the
FLA file if you want to edit the FLA file
To do this you need to open the photographer.fla file, go to
the act layer, and then in the first frame you will see the
following code:

_root.loadVariables("text.html", 0, "POST");
You should replace it with the code below and then save the
changes and export it as an SWf file.

That's a problem, since the format changes between jpg and swf when converted
probably won't just go back to their previous state, less the changed section.
The converter you have, is it a freeware to convert swf to fla; or what does it say
that it can do? In some cases, a flash video can be copied (perhaps illegally)
through use of a software such as Ambrosia's SnapZ ProX and a movie of any-
thing playing on your Mac can be copied. So, a movie could be paused at the
end where the unwanted content exists, so the copy would not have it recorded.

Otherwise, there are a few shareware and freeware editors for swf content; to
some degree or another they either convert content or allow some editing.
And this may only work as far as the item's creator allowed, if the file is locked.

I'd tried some basic editing of swf files a few years ago, and was able to only
convert the string of images into single-frame jpgs and work on each one,
but could not get them back into an swf. Perhaps graphic converter or other
software could do something for these; but I am inexperienced in all that.

.FLA batch edit?

Hi, i've been scouring the net looking for a tool to make
batch edits for .FLA files. I have about 500 .fla files which all
contain the same static text, but now our legal dept is saying we
can't say certain things, so now the daunting task lies ahead to
change out the text within all 500 .fla files. Yes, it needs to be
static because unfortunately our publisher's won't allow dynamic
text. I'm aware of software such as Sothink decompiler and Liatro,
but those only focus on editing .swf files one by one and turning
them into .fla files or extracting elements which doesn't help me.
The only solution we have right now is to open each fla one
by one and use the "find and edit replace" tool in flash.
I'd be very grateful if anyone can point me to the right
direction for this. I even thought of using a macro program to
record mouse and keystrokes... I'm even open to having our
engineering team work with adobe/macromedia developers to engineer
a solution.
I found this tool which is the closest thing to a batch edit,
however it doesn't allow edits and only does mass extractions.

You can use a find-and-replace tool on the fla file (not the
swf file) but ONLY do this if you keep the number of text
characters
the same or replace them with spaces. Don't add any length to
text strings or shorten them without substituting spaces. One extra
character or deleted character will mess up the file pointers
and your file will be corrupted.
Make sure you do backups of all the files to be modified.
This program has a demo that lets you do up to five files at
a time. $25 to buy it.

Getting Error in opening a fla file in flash 8

Hi I use flash 8 to edit my projects, recently I got a website related to music downloads and it was built in flash, now when I try to edit the fla file it opens up in flash 8 but I cannot see the library and when I edit it and make some changes in it it saves but it doesnt work like the original one.
any suggestion would be really helpful.
I think it has something to do with older/newer version of flash ?

If it's a flash cs3 fla, then you might have a lot of problem since cs3 has new features that flash8 cant take care of.

You need the fla file that created the swf. You edit the fla and publish the swf. Swf's don't usually involve css styles.

Editing down an FLV?

I recorded a screencast with Acrobat Connect and wanted to do some simple edits with it in Premiere Pro. I'm having trouble figuring out how to get reasonable output size.
My original single clip is a 1920x1088 FLV, allegedly at 7.88fps. It is 17 megabytes.
I placed it into a 1440x1088 sequence (because I wanted to crop the right edge off).
I made a handful of cuts with the razor tool, deleted some sections, ripple deleted the empty space.
I also sped up one clip 143%.
(I experimented with trying to record a voiceover track, but Premiere crashed 2 or 3 times and I couldn't get the the "Enable Track for Recording" button in the Audio Mixer to work, so I gave up on that).
When I export my sequence to FLV, with On2 VP6 frame rate "same as source" bitrate VBR/One Pass/Low, I get a 59mb file.
But my original was 17mb.
What am I doing wrong?

Well of and by itself, video is NOT interactive. There is no way to make the video file be interactive. You can however embed cue point signals into the video and listen for those events (cue points) or just listen for when the video is complete.
But the fact that you listen and detect those events, still doesn't actually do anything, you still need some actionscript that says "when the event is detected, do this....".
So you'll need to do some editing of the .fla that includes the video player (which gets published as the .swf file).
If you don't have the .fla file, I don't see how you can make it work.
But since there are a lot of ways to create flv video players, why not just create a new .fla and then code in what you need?
Or perhaps try using a 3rd party video player that allows for cue points, can detect and act on the cues.

When player detects that the video has ended:

then reset the playhead to 60 sec into video and (play or) pause the video.
could jump to (gotoAndStop at) another part of the main timeline (but that is commented out for now)... instead

What you are asking will take a little actionscript is all, but you need the .fla.

Having trouble opening .fla files in Flash MX

Hi,
Can anyone help me?
I'm using Flash MX, and when I get sent .fla files to edit I
get a "Unexpected file format" error or a "An unknow error has
occured while accessing ..<location of file.fla>"
Is this because I'm trying to edit/open .fla files that
aren't compatible with Flash MX?? Why is this the case?
If someone could shed some light on this that would be great
as all .fla's recently have been causging me problems.

sound like you try to opne flashMX2004 or flash8 foles in MX.
that wount work. An upgrade would help, or asking your source for
those flas to save then in MX format - which is not possible in
Flash 8 though.

Inconsistent printing from an FLA

I am Using Flash MX and Flash 2004.
When I insert jpgs into a keyframe and then try to print out
that page while I am editing the FLA, I get strange results.
Sometimes the jpg prints blank sometimes it is solid blackand
sometimes it prints perfectly. This is true if it is a jpg, broken
apart, a graphic, or a movieclip.
any ideas?

Help with editing a template flash file..

FIRST OFF..please don't shoot the noobee..I know some folks
don't like the templates and I appreciate that.
I have done some reading but not a whole lot about Flash. I
certainly don't want to BUILD a flash (not yet), but want to edit
one that is included in a template. I only want to edit the header
that drops down. It says The Web STudio. I, for example, want it to
say Marks Studio.
Ok..the temp comes with Flash/non flash.
I open w/flash and have a 3 folders: flash, psd and html.
-flash folder has Images, fla doc and one flash html file
-PSD folder has 3 psd files
-html folder has flash folder, images folder, css file and
one single index.html file.
I opened the flash folder and found the image.jpg I wanted to
change to Marks studio.
I opend the PSD and found the slice that is the same as that,
then edited it like I want it in PSD, then saved to replace the old
image. top1. jpg
Still, it is the same ole one that came with the temp.
as I said, please don't shoot the noobe. I just wanna edit
the flash file.

hi,
I'm a total computer newbie and kinda slow with these sort of things, but here goes.
I made a website in flash and published it but haven't uploaded it to my website yet. If i do upload it, how do i edit it again, in Flash?
I do have a webhost, but I can't edit it there because I made the website myself therefore I have to edit it from my programs and then publish it again, correct?
How do i see my individual pages again and edit them and then upload them again.

Yes, if you want to modify your Flash web site design you need to use Flash to edit the fla file and then publish a new swf file. To get that revised swf file onto the server you just repeat whatever you did to get it on the server to begin with.

Help to edit in Favorites in Finder

I writing in this forum to get the right solution... ;o)
I'm looking for the solution to put "Network" in to the Favorites in Finder ....
So it will look like darkgray Documents, Desktop and so on....
I'm not interesting in to know how to share dragged folders from the servers, but only how I enable the "Network".
You will find the "tool" if you start in like this example.... (your name's mac).... there you will have a list over all the harddrives and USBs... and NETWORK.
I hope that some on will help me ;o)

Hi Rob,
The SWF is the compiled file, you need to edit the FLA file
which is the
source file and will open properly in CS3.

Batch Changing SWF Publish Settings for Hundreds of FLAs?

Hi, I've updated action script for a huge number of .flas to AS3 but forgot to change their Publish Settings to Flash Player 10 and AS3. "MovieClip(this).stop" for example does not work in their swfs.
Is it possible to change these settings by batch processing all of the .flas at once? (Through a Mac Automator droplet or text editing the .flas, etc...or ___?)

You might be able to do this using JSFL, but I don't know exactly how. I'm looking at Extending Flash MX 2004 (which pretty much still covers JSFL today) and see the following methods.
fl.browseForFileURL();
fl.openDocument();
fl.saveDocument();
document.publishProfiles()
document.publish();
I'm not finding a way to change the publish settings yet, but I'm sure they are in there somewhere.
