Editing in Timeline

Hello all,
First of all thanks for your help with my files conversion.
Now i'm into editing floor.
My question is how do you move clips in the timeline without replacing the clip that was there already? In imovie 6, this was easy, just drag the clip where you want it to be and all the clips will move accordingly unless it's locked.
Let's say I got Clip 1, Clip2, Clip 3, clip 4 and clip 5 in the timeline in that order. I would like to move clip5 between Clip#1 and Clip#2. When I moved clip#5, it replaces clip#2. Is there a way to do it in the timeline?
Thank you so much!

Michel's trick does not involve using the option key,
and it's only when you drag from the Viewer to the Timeline.
Dragging the clip to the place above the little line is an insert edit;
below is overwrite. So it's like using the canvas, except
that it doesn't matter where the playhead is. Try it!
I don't know of a way to lock a single clip. You could shift-drag
the clip up to a new track and lock the track (using the cute
little padlock icon on the left of the track).

FCP 7.0.3, AVCHD/proRes 422 LT, ripple edit in timeline not working. Using the ripple tool, I click on the edit point, drag the cursor to the clip and direction I want to trim but it doesn't work. pop-up says collision on V-1. Same thing when I double-click the clip to player and try to move the edit point on the scrub bar. This was functional in prior sessions. What's happening? Thx in advance.

I'm only using one (V1) track. Prior to this problem I was unable to insert edit. That problem mysteriously vanished after an unsuccessful phone support session w/ Apple failed to solve. Also when I try to insert w/transition (default cross-dissolve) the transition is applied to the opposite edit point,ie: out point of insert clip has transition instead of in point where it was applied. When I try to add transition to edit point (CMD-T) it doesn't work.
I'm slowly working around the ripple edit malfunction by using the razor tool and ripple delete (shift-delete) to trim in the timeline.

  • Converting video clips already edited in timeline?

Hey guys, excuse my noobiness, I am in fact one.
I recently have learned that before importing my footage from my canon g20 into FCPX it's best to convert the files to .mov. first of all, is that correct?
assuming it is i got the brorsoft video converter for mac which i havent used yet, but from what i gather it's pretty easy to import files from my camera into there, then export them as .mov files to make it easier for FCPX to work with them. Let me know if all that is correct.
Now, onto the main question. Before i learned to convert files upon import I already started a lengthy project in FCPX. It's full of very quick hard edits and cuts, as well as TONS of sped up shots. I haven't exported the project yet, but all the shot that were sped up to 4x or 8x playback very very choppy in FCPX.
My questions are, should i assume that the sped up shots are choppy because the files weren't converted before import?
Will it playback as it's supposed to after i export it? meaning is it only playing back choppy because i'm veiwing it in the timeline, and when exporting it will fully render to playback smoothly?
Lastly, if i need to, can i convert the edited files in my timeline? So, if the reason its not playing back smoothly is because the files weren't converted, can i do that now? even though the whole piece is edited and sync'd to music.
let me know, if you could help me out at all as, like i said, I'm very new to this. I also have 2 projects that I'm waiting to start until I can figure out the best way to get the best quality and best playback before starting them.

    THANK YOU

its rendering now, we'll see. I really appreciate your help Tom, thank you.
as i mentioned earlier, i got some software called "video converter" for mac by a company brorsoft. I can import whatever the file type is off the canon g20 (still unsure what file type it is exactly) and then export it as any file type i want.
Is there an ideal file type i should be using when importing to FCPX? prores? .mov? mp4? I have no clue what works best without sacrificing video quality.
and the original question was since i already imported video for a project, which i edited, fine tuned, and is complete just the way i want it, can i convert the clips that are already in the timeline without messing up all my edits, trasitions, etc..? do i even need to do that?
also, when i export the master file, does it somehow render the project even further to where it will look different than whats playing in my timeline now? when doing so, whats the highest resultion (what file type) i can do for a youtube upload?

  • Multicam editing: Can't get blade to show in angle viewer when trying to edit in Timeline

This problem just appeared. I have done lots of multicam editing in FCPX, it works great.
But, today I started on a new video and:
    - I created the first multicam clip, it looks fine.
    - I created a Project and appended the multicam clip into the Project, it looks fine.
    - I see all the Angles in the Angle Viewer, it looks normal.
    - I select the Event Browser and hit play, all angles play. I move the curser over an angle and I see a hand, just as I should. everything fine so far.
    - I click in the Timeline and hit the space bar and the selected angle and audio start to play..........BUT the angles in the angle viewer do NOT play. Not right.
    - With the Timeline still selected, I move the curser over an angle in the angle viewer, and i see the hand, NOT the Blade.
So, FCPX thinks I am still in the Event Browser, even though when I click in the Timeline, the Timeline background color changes to light grey, which says I am in the Timeline. FCPX is not letting me go into the Timeline (even though the background color changes).
I have to be doing something dumb, but I don't see it.
    Any suggestions?

Turns out that was EXACTLY the problem --- I kept looking around and finally discovered the problem was that I was NOT in a project (although I thought I was).
    Nevertheless, thank you for responding.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 won't Render. Freezes for 1-2 minutes when I try to edit the timeline.. Help!

    Hi Guys
I'm new to this, but in desperate need of help. Thought i'd give it a shot and let you know what my problem is!
Basically i'm editing a dance concert which is approx 2 hours long. I'm running a late 2011 model iMac w/ i7 Quadcore and 16GB of RAM.
Using Sony XDCAM EX 1080p footage (2 cameras). Everything was going so well until I rendered (not export) the footage overnight. It only rendered less than half of the footage and won't allow me to render anymore.  Doesn't even show the details of the amount of frames.. estimated time etc.
    Heres a screen shot -
I checked my hard drive space and there's 150 GB left so there's more than enough for it render.
Another problem is that any editing i do to the timeline whether it's trimming, moving, copying etc. It just lags / freezes for about 1-2 minutes (has the loading Icon) then goes back to normal.
Before I did the rendering last night, everything was fine. I was able to edit very smoothly without any lag or freezing. First time i've encountered this. I did the same production last year using the same cameras, file format and software version and it was fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Kind regards,
    Jeremy

Remove the gaps in your timeline  or fill the gaps with black clips and try again.

  • Need to disable the insert edit in Timeline.

I'm piecing together a video to music right now and am finding that, when I drop and drag clips from the viewer to the timeline, I accidentally use the insert edit, only to find later on that some of my clips have been unknowingly moved around. Is there any way to disable the insert edit arrow in the timeline and only have the overwrite edit arrow active?
    Thanks!

If you prefer dragging directly to the timeline, then you'll need to pay attention to where your mouse pointer is located in the appropriate video track before you release the mouse button. If you look at an empty video track, you'll notice a line that runs just above the center of the track. If you drag a clip and your mouse is above that divider line, you'll perform an Insert Edit, if your mouse is below that divider, then you'll perform an Overwrite Edit. You'll see the mouse pointer change indicating the edit that you're about to perform.
    From the FCP Users Manual:
    http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/19589/Timeline%20Edit%20Zones.png
I will second the advice that was already given, performing edits with the keyboard or the Canvas overlays is MUCH more accurate than dragging directly to the timeline.

  • Captivate 6 editing - on timeline, audio is out of sync after pausing

I am trying to create a software demo for my company. I am using the HD video and then have imported audio recordings over the video.
The big work portion of this project is adding call-out smart shapes on the video during certain portions to highlight what the voiceover is discussing. However, when I pause the timeline so I can add a smart shape, upon resuming from the pause, the audio is out of sync. This happens even if I hit Stop on the timeline, and use my mouse to move the playhead.
This is adding significant amounts of time to my video editing process, to the point where I am missing deadlines for having the videos created. The only solution I have found to guarantee that the call-out smart shapes are in sync with the audio instructions is to Play the timeline from the very beginning, each time after pausing the audio.
Is anyone else experiencing these issues, or know of a way to fix it? This is adding enough time to the editing process that our company is looking into other video editing softwares to replace Captivate.

I always copy the entire PRIVATE folder from camera to hard drive, and then importing from that hard drive folder in to project.
I am saing original, becouse I do not convert them to diferent format. And how could be the original files of video and  audio out of sync???
I am using Premiere for 10 years, I am not new to this software, but never had this problem.

  • How get multiclips to stay in viewer when playing/editing in timeline?

I just started editing in multiclip. I can get my 3 multiclip clips to show in the Viewer on a 4-up display, but when I play the Timeline, the Viewer jumps to full frame active view. I've set the RT at Multiclip Playback, set the Open option on the Playhead Sync menu, and set Multi-clip 4-up Display. What am I doing wrong or missing?
How can I get the multiclips 4-up display to stay in the Viewer when I play the Timeline?
    Thanks,
    Duncan
    Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10) 2 750 HDs, 1 500 HD, 1 1T HD

There are 2 things to check.
    1. Has your timeline been rendered? I ask this because I was given a 3 camera multiclip project from another editor here, and with all of my settings checked, I still couldn't get the multiclips to show on my external when playing back. Once playback was stopped or the playhead scrubbed, then the 4-up display would return. Just for kicks, I cleared his render cache and bingo, 4-up returned on playback.
    2. In the View menu, is "Show Multiclip Angles" checked? (It's at the very bottom of the menu).

  • Audio clip editing in timeline

I have seen some threads on this but they do not completely answer my question and are already marked answer.
I want to edit out small segments of audio only.  There is no sound track or anything.  For example I want to remove a phone ringing.  I know how to unlink and razor the audio although I can only do it if I more the audio to its own location on the timeline.  My main issue is that the razor does not seem to work if I spin down the waveform display.  I am using the waveform to find my exact edit point then spin up the display and cut.  Seems strange, am I missing something.  on a mac Premiere 5.1

    This might work better.

  • MPEG4/H.264 editing onthe timeline

I was wondering if it was possible to import and MPEG 4 file of SD or HD resolution into the FCP 5.1 timeline and edit this footage with frame accuracy or if there was a way of transcoding so there was minimal quality loss. I am aware that it is a lossy codec but have a few projects that originate on MPEG4/H.264.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
I am working with some technology that currently captures video with M-JPEG files but this results in artifacts that are hard to clean up.
Assuming that MPEG 4 has the potential to capture high quality SD imagery with real time encoding, this footage would then needed to be edited in post. If it is possible, then MPEG 4 would be the way to go. Basically looking for a very efficient way of capturing video at a high quality over a long period of time without nasty processing artifacts - that is also easy to edit or transcode - hence looking at MPEG 4.
    Thanks

  • Showing Multi clip editing in timeline (track by track)

I think I saw a tutorial where a person was showing how to multi edit and at the end he pressed a short cut to reveal all the separate camera tracks on the timeline.  How is this done?
Example ... of course when multi editing in the timeline, there is only 1 track of video even those your choosing multiple sources in the viewer.  How do you show all the clips in the timeline of you wanted to see all of them?

    Does my question make sense?
    Can this be done?

  • Two-camera editing via timeline?

I'v filmed a pop group and am now editing the footage. We worked with two camera's and sound was recorded separately with a digital Edirol recorder, plugged into the PA-system. That audio-clip is used as the foundation for my editing. I synchronised it on the timeline with the (uninterupted) video-footage of the A-cam (sound of which is unpatched). Now I want to overwrite some parts of the A-footage by better, more dynamic, shots from the B-cam. Is there a way to just put the footage of the B-cam on another video-track and edit from one timeline-videotrack to another? Or does the cutting of the B-cam footage have to happen in the viewer and then do an overwrite edit to the A-cam track? Putting it in the timeline and editing from there would save a lot of synchronising effort. I hope I express this question clearly enough, English not being my native language...

I'm editing in the timeline, where there are already three audio-tracks (two stereo linked to the video trakc from camera A, and 1 WAV-file from the Edirol digital audio recorder )and one video-track. I try to drag a clip (the B-camera footage) - with no in- or out-points but with sound- from the browser to a new video track. Patch panels for the existing tracks on the timeline are in the 'patched' position.
So far, I edited clips from the two camera's by three-point editing in the canvas overlay (drag to the 'overwrite' panel), but that means I have to synchronise the clip in the viewer first, which is very timeconsuming. I was thinking that, when I could put the entire B-cam clip in a separate videotrack in the timeline, I would only have to synchronise it once, and then edit parts of it into the A-cam track.

  • When I perform a split audio edit, the timeline doesn't show it when the clips are collapsed!

Especially the clip whose audio is 'covering' another... the timeline doesn't show it's audio as extending, and it would appear only that the clip for which audio has been shortened, is still there, or at "0"... what gives? If you uncollapse the audio, or detach it, you do, once again, see the split audio.
    Thanks

Like Zambonisurfer suggested, this is so by design.

  • How to replace event file AND replace edits in timeline

Is it possible to replace a video/file in an event, and in turn replace what it was used for in the timeline? For example, if I used some footage from an event and I cut i up 3 times in a project and added transitions and effects, is it possible to replace the file in the event with a new file (same length) and have the same cuts/transitions/effects applied to the new file in the timeline?
I hope my question is clear. I've been trying to do this in the original media folder but with no luck.
    Thanks!

hit cmd-c in the Project to copy the clip('s settings)
select the new clip in the Event
drag on old clip, select one of the replace-options
select replaced clip, cmd-alt-v, apply effects/colors/…
I would NEVER dare to 'fumble' with the internal file-structure of a data-base (=FCPX)
Yeah I've learned that the hard way. I'll probably never do that again. Anyways, I didn't think about copying the clips settings. That definently works. I guess what I was looking for (or dreaming of) was some kind of automatic way. In After Effects and I believe premiere, you can right-click on a file in the "Event" folder and it will replace it the project as well automatically. I don't think anything like this exists for FCP however. I'm pretty sure the only way would to wait for apple to add something like this, or create some kind of script/plugin/automater. Any ideas?

  • How to sync separate audio .wav after editing in timeline

Newby editor here.  I shot a 10 min video using both the camera mic and a separate digital recorder. I  created a Premier project and edited the footage (8 separate .mov files) before I realized that I hadn't synced the footage to the higher quality Zoom audio file (1 wav. file as I left it turned on).  Now that the project is edited is there any way to sync the footage to the individual clips?  I've tried using the "Merge" capabilities in Premier Pro 8.1 but that only syncs to the entire video file, not the individual section that I've edited into the film.
Do I have to go back and since the files and then re-edit each clip?
    Any suggestions gladly accepted.

The simplest way I can think of to solve this is to export out a new clip using the video from the original and the audio from the Zoom.  Then do a Replace on the original in the bin with the newly exported clip.  All the edits remain intact, but using the new clip with the Zoom audio.
