Email to deleted users not bouncing back

When users are deleted from workgroup manager, emails to their email account still go through instead of bouncing back.
The same occurs when simply setting the mail setting to "None" instead of "Enabled".
I have also deleted the same accounts from Server Admin -> Mail -> Accounts, but problem persists.
I have restarted the server - issue persists.
Where else could their user record still be stored?
I think it's postfix's job to reject these emails..?
When I send an email to a jibberish account that has never existed in the past, it is successfully rejected with /var/log/mail.log showing:
<[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table;
When I email an ex-employee whose account was deleted, email goes through with /var/log/mail.log showing:
Jun 24 08:26:42 ods1 postfix/smtp[28886]: B37F5658CDD: to=<[email protected]>, relay=127.0.0.1[127.0.0.1]:10024, delay=0.19, delays=0/0/0/0.18, dsn=2.0.0, status=sent (250 2.0.0 Ok, id=29894-02, from MTA([127.0.0.1]:10025): 250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as DE236658CE4)

Any advice greatly appreciated!

For all those that face a similar issue: it was resolved after demoting Open Directory server to standalone, promoting it back to master, reimporting all users and reentering all passwords - a major pain in the butt, but nothing else would fix it.
About a month later, I thought I had the same issue, but luckily this time it came good after a few hours.  I think a postfix reload may have contributed towards getting it successfully rejecting this time:
sudo postfix reload
I'm trying to understand how the Apple Open Directory <> Postfix setup works so that I have a thorough understanding when next faced with this issue.
I believe the relevant line in    /etc/postfix/main.cf   /   postconf -n    is:
local_recipient_maps = proxy:unix:passwd.byname $alias_maps
I'm not sure what the proxy:unix:password.byname part means, but $alias_maps is defined below:
alias_maps = hash:/etc/aliases,hash:/var/mailman/data/aliases
/etc/aliases has all the postmaster, abuse, etc. entries - none of the actual users' accounts.
/var/mailman/data/aliases has all the entries for the mailing lists - none of the actual users' accounts.
This leaves me with either:
local_recipient_maps not being the correct setting
   or
The part I don't understand: proxy:unix:passwd.byname being the list of actual mail users
Does anyone know the answer?

  • Not receiving inbox messages & one email I've sent keeps bouncing back bogging up my i

    Hello.
I have a new MACBOOK PRO and I love it BUT.....
I have been having one specific email bounce back into my inbox (recovered messages section) over 1,000x's a day.
I keep deleting the messages and emptying the trash to try to stop it but its not working!!!
I contacted the person who i sent the email too and told them what was happening. Their response was, "its not coming from this end, check with your web guy..." UGH!!!
I am now not receiving any new incoming messages and I have had to result in using my iphone to check my inbox, every  day!!
How do I fix this problem? OR......Should I just make a Genius appointment?? LOL
    Thx! Nikki

    Hi Nikki,
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup),  it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move this folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup
Note, in 10.5 & up /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/ may or may not exist.

  • Deleted User not Completely Removed

When I delete a user from my mac and later create a new user with the same name, OS X will ask me to recreate an existing user. The new user will have a reduced set of folders in it's account, objects that were on the desktop will be recreated too.
I have to delete the user first, then delete the admin user's cache files, log out, then log in again, bevore this effect is gone.
Anybody else seen this strange behaviour? I'd call it a bug...

    Thank you for your hint.
The key point of this "execise" is to recreate a user that has exactly the same name...
One possibility could be to create a new user with a different name and rename the full name field accordingly.
I'll try this later and report back.

I had a test user account configured for some time, so in an attempt to duplicate your problem I just deleted it using the option "delete the home folder". I subsequently created a new Standard account with the same name. I wasn't asked to recreate the account and it appears the new account is brand new with default settings. Logged in, skipped the Apple ID question, logged out.
I then deleted the account and created another with the same name. Log in / log out etc. Deleted the account. Created a new account with the same name. Nothing new.
So, using Mountain Lion I can't recreate this. It's a mystery.
Perhaps it has something to do with the Apple ID, which I did not create for the test user?

  • On one of email accounts - I can not go back at times

Email comes up 25 emails at a time about half the time the hand with the finger up will not show up to click on the back arrow so that I can back to the next 25 -- thoughts -- is there a place that I can change the curser arrow to the hand?

Assuming you are using some version of Windows, the appearance of the mouse pointer is set in your Control Panel.  You would navigate to "Mouse and Pointers" or something like that to make any changes.  But before you do that, try clearing out your browser's history and cache.  Then re-start it in a fresh session.  Or try using a different browser and see if that helps.

  • Weird Bounce-back of an email address that is not even in my contacts!

    Hey folks,
Recently I have been getting a bounced back email from an address that is not even in my contacts (I use outlook). It's only when I send an email to a particular person. She gets the email, but I get this bounce back from a SIMILAR email. It is annoying, and confounding.
I have scanned my laptop regularly with updated McAfee and Spybot, and have found nothing. I am using Vista Home and it is all updated as well.
    Thanks!
    Jim

If the message is being received and you are only sending to a single address on the sending line, then I would say the error is likely on the receiver's end (maybe they have a forward setup to the bogus address?).  If you could include the full headers (email addresses redacted) of the message which is bouncing back, maybe someone here can spot something and suggest something further.

  • Bounced emails are not coming back to me

I send out many emails and to keep my email lists accurate I need to know which emails bounce back to me. As of the last 2 weeks I am not receiving any bounced back emails. I have sent several test bogus emails and they do not come back as well. What is the solution!

How do you figure this is a Thunderbird problem? Thunderbird hands the email off to your providers SMTP server and then it is done. It has no control over what the servers that the message pass through do with it.

  • My emails to others bounce back even if they are replies

I get emails from my contact form on my 2 websites. I also get emails from people who have my business card. In about one out of three cases, my reply email to these new emailers bounces back, and the message I get is something along the lines of it being perceived as spam by their email system. They're one to one emails, not groups. I don't use any of the words that might normally trigger spam, and I'm almost always replying to someone enquiring after my workshops. So I'm losing business by not being able to contact them back.
    Thank you for any advice.

Some spam filters do not like peoples signature. You might examine what you have in your signature and see if you need to modify that.

  • Bounced back emails I have never sent!

I am receiving at least 50 emails everyday from:
    Mail Delivery System <[email protected]>
Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender
However, I NEVER sent eamils to the email addresses that they are bounce back from!!!  What can I do to stop this?

    Jo-Jo ,
This sounds like your email account has been compromised, someone has used it to send spam emails out, and you are receiving those back.
ASAP change you password for the email account to something different, difficult to guess. Change the Secret Questions and Answers for your account security profile. Run virus/spyware/malware scan on your machines.
Once this is done and your email account is secure, you will probably still continue to receive those delivery failed messages for few days until its all filtered out from the spam messages that were sent from your account.
Hope this helps, if you have any other Questions or Concerns, please let us know.

If you right-click on an accont's inbox and select "Synchronize {name}", that should perform the "get new mail" function as part of the general synchronization.
