What is the difference between Essbase design phase and essbase build or coding phase?

You should identify the process requirements and query patterns of the users.
Prepare the report-dimension matrix and process flow document.
Then you can arrive at the Dimensional Model that serves the user requirements.
Model means dimensions and members and the intermediate consolidations required.
Identify the rules required for mapping and calculations.
Prepare a Source - Model - Reports mapping document.
This is a tool that will validate whether your model is capable of delivering requirements.
Then setup a prototype.
Implement the required as supported by Essbase.
Push the prototype to users for their verification.
Based on the feed back you can feel you are going in the right direction.
Then You can step up further to the development.
Tuning, UAT, Roll out and Go-Live support are common.

Essbase Accounts Hierarchy -- Design Help

Hi All,Iam designing a P&L Cube & a Balance sheet Cube.I have a specific problem---Please read below1. In JDE, Account number is the combination of the BU , Object Account & Sub Account.Seems the unique number of accounts (with Account Numbers) are 1.5 million.Upto (Level 6 in JDE) , Accounts are standard across the Companies or business unitsOne company has several business units.Building hierarchy till level 6(level 6 means level 6 in JDE) may not be a problem in Essbase.The real challenge is after level 6,level 7 level 8 level 9 accounts are there & these are not standard for all business units. I do something similar with JDE. I use short account id's in some cases to create uniqueness. I also have member names consisting of the full three tier account structure. Unable to Create Instance of Essbase Query Designer

followed by Unable to Initialize Query Designer.Essbase v6.1Excel 97 sp2 iWin NT 4 sp5We are running into this error when trying to launch query designer."Unable to Create Instance of Essbase Query Designer"Query designer is checked in the addins before we try running it. We receive the messages. If we check the addins after we get the messages, query designer is unchecked.The Essbase addin works fine with no issues. Any thoughts on what this might be or how to troubleshoot it?Thanks.Mike

Update: is it possible that security rights to the Essbase directory would affect the Query Designer? On a machine that it works on, I've noticed that the "xla" file updates each time it is accessed.

How to build the members in essbase based on levels using EAL

Hi All,
How to restrict the members to build the in essbase based on levels using EAL.
I've requirement, in one dimension, needs to build the one level1 member as level0 in essbase.
please let me know the procedure, if any one implemented or face similar.

there's no such functionality in EAL to create Essbase outlines based on levels. the only workaround to this is to use Mapping tables:
1- create the dimension in essbase with the desired HFM level 1 members as level 0.
2- set this specific dimension to mapping in your design grid within your EAL Bridge
3- create the SQL Mapping table and start mapping those members from HFM to Essbase.

Essbase Error : Unable to load the dll essapinu.dll.

Hi Guys,
I have imported a essbase cube in the OBIEE. The import went fine, then i made the logical model and presentation layer. Now when i am selecting column from that cube in BI answers, i am getting this error:
*State: HY000. Code: 10058. [NQODBC] [SQL_STATE: HY000] [nQSError: 10058] A general error has occurred. The specified module could not be found. [nQSError: 36001] Unable to load the dll essapinu.dll. (HY000)*
Any idea how to solve this. BTW the installation of essbase server went fine and also this dll is present in the hyperion server directory.

How to lock a period in Essbase but the app is Planning app?

Hi!
I am using Planning v11.1.1.3 and have a Planning app.
The requirement is that user can read/write data directly to Essbase via Smartview. I lock a particular period, e.g. Oct, in Scenario dimension so the user cannot write data to Oct in Planning, but how do stop user to write data to Oct via Smartview?
The user has 'Server Access' for Essbase, 'Interactive User' and 'Analytic Services Write Access' for Planning.
If I create a additional filter to lock 'Oct' in Essbase, it seems the user can still write to 'Oct'.
Appreciate if anyone can shed some light on this.

First Smartview is 2 things. Its a planning interface and an Essbase interface.
So users can access Planning forms and still have the right security. I assume you mean users are interfacing Essbase directly to the same cube that is your planning cube so basically bypassing Planning that controls things
you can push the filters from Planning to Essbase but Planning controls the periods from the scenario. And If I remember correctly this is not passed to Essbase.
So your options are 1
1) dont let users access Essbase directly and force them to use Planning forms in Smartview
2) don't push Planning security filters to Essbase and try to replicaate all the security again in Essbase. But the tools is not design for this and refreshing will wipe out all your hardwork so be very very careful
3) push Oracle/Hyperion to finally fix the way they do security to make it more unified process once and for all

SSRS pulls data from ESSBASE cube, data not showing

Dear Experts,
We are connecting SSRS 2012 to Essbase 11.1.3 to pull data from the cube, and having some issues with some members data not showing in the query designer and report, while some have no problem. And we couldn't find a pattern on which members won't show. We are wondering if this is a known issue and if there is a way to solve the problem.

Check the following:-
1 Check whether you have made the joins properly.
2 Check data at multiprovider level .
3 is data available for reporting in both the cubes

Problem loading Query Designer Add-in

Hi All,
Can anyone please help me on my below issue.
Whenever user is trying to start a new query in Essbase , he is getting below error message. It will not allow user to build a fresh Essbase pull

1) Try to remove the addin and then add again.(Before doing this close all the excel process from the task Manager)
2) Check weather essexcln.xll and essxleqd.xla are corrupted.

Federation of Essbase with OBIEE 11g

Hi,
I have a ragged unbalanced Accounts hierarchy in the Essbase cube which I have imported into the OBIEE repository besides the Scenario,Version,Entity,Period and Year hierarchies. Now I have a detail table in the Oracle database with Account,Version,Scenario,Entity with Value(Measure) at the lowest level of each hierarchy. I have read that for federation, the hierarchies need to be balanced. In the relational table Account dimension, I have maintained consistent no. of levels with null values wherever leaves are absent. Now as the Accounts hierarchy in the Essbase cube is unbalanced, how should I design to enable the federation between the Essbase cube and relational table? OBIEE version is 11.1.1.6 and Essbase is 11.1.2.2. Your help is highly appreciated.

The issue has been solved by using Lookup tables. The relational database table has also been populated with alias member names. Then in OBIEE BMM layer, using Lookup Sparse function, the Essbase alias members have been used to lookup the value against the Relational Database table which served as lookup table in the BMM layer.

How to design Flat file for loading attribute dimension in a planning application

Dear Gurus,
I have a requirement to extract attribute dimensions from an essbase application and load it to another planning application. I have a dimension called Program and two attribute dimensions Sales Manager, Accounts manager associated with Program dimension in Essbase application. I will Extract these dimensions using Essbase outline extractor. After Extracting the attribute dimensions I have to load these dimensions to planning applications using outline load utility. Kindly guide me how to design the flat file for loading attribute dimensions in planning application.

You could dig through the docs and try to figure out the file format manually, or you could do this the easy way. Simply use the Outline Load Utility to export your attribute dimension from Planning. The export file format is the same as the import file format. You might have to manually add a couple of test members to your attribute dimension so that your export file has some content. Then simply update the file you exported, and import it.
(I am assuming you have already manually created the Attribute dimension in Planning, and that you simply need to add members to it.)

Using ODI to load 2 similar Essbase cubes

Hello all,
I am trying to create an ODI routine that incorporates the following details:
-Loads specific Essbase member properties from a single flat file to 2 similar Essbase cubes
-The Essbase cubes are virtually identical, except that one is ASO and one is BSO, therefore the properties may differ for specific members (i.e. DataStorage, Consolidation, Formula, etc.). There are also other differences in dimensionality, but those details are inconsequential to this routine...
-For each type of member property, the flat file has 2 sets of columns - one for ASO and one for BSO. Therefore, one column might be called "ASODataStorage" while another one is called "BSODataStorage". They have different values in them respective to the Essbase architecture.
-There is also a set of columns called "ASOFlag" and "BSOFlag" that flag which members should even be loaded to that respective cube. So, one sub hierarchy may be needed for the ASO cube, but not the BSO cube.
Earlier, I created 2 contexts for these cubes so I could use the same ODI routine and source metadata to update both cubes with a simple change of context. This part is working correctly. The challenge I'm facing now, however, is how to design a routine that will select the appropriate columns of data based on my context. Therefore, if one context is called "ASO", it should select the "ASO" columns and apply only those properties/members. And a similar situation should happen when the "BSO" context is created.
I have tinkered with the idea of using a variable that stores the current context information, and becomes evaluated at runtime and then changes the source columns based on the variable value. However, I'm having trouble getting this to work correctly (I am a newbie to variables). I am also having trouble figuring out how to map all of the source columns to the target columns, as I am going from double property columns in the source to a single set of property columns in the Essbase metdata target.
Is there a better way to approach this in ODI? Please note that I am aware that EIS can handle this as well...but I am looking for an ODI solution.

In simple terms you should be able to create a package, drag the variable on to the package and set the value as ASOflag
Then drag your interface on to the diagram to run the ASO load (the interface should have a filter that uses the variable to filter the required records)
Then drag the variable on to the diagram and set the value to BSOflag.
Then drag your interface on to the diagram to run the BSO load (the interface should have a filter that uses the variable to filter the required records)
Though you say you are changing contexts so you might have to go down the route of generating a scenario from a package for the ASO load, then a scenario for the BSO load, then create another package using the ODIstartscen tool and execute the scenarios with the specified scenarios.

Question regarding ASO application in Essbase 11 version

I have a question regarding the ASO applications for telecom company built in Essbase 11 version. Please provide your feedback on the design.
The ASO application has the following number of Dimensions:

The data is mostly sparse. Does this design yield a good performance. Should I change some of the attributes to UDAs to increase the performance.I think Attribute dimensions are more flexible than UDAs but it affects the performance of the retrieval.

In ASO attribute dimensions are treated like regular dimensions, That is to say they are materalized just like a regular dimension. Changing them to UDA's won't buy you the same performance as having them as dimensions will. The one nice thing about Attributes in ASO cubes (and BSO cubes) is you don't clutter us the screen with dimensions that are not used a lot. If your attrubite dimensions are used often in your ASO cube, there would be no performance difference if you made them regular dimensions.

Re: Essbase Add-in and Excel 2010

I have a user who is getting the following error:
Excel experienced a serious problem with the 'c:\oracle\middleware\epmsystem11r1\products\exceladdin\bin\essexcin.xll" add-in. . . .Do you want to disable this add-in?
Do we need to reinstall the Essbase add-in ?
I have had the user disable other add-ins via 'File > Options > Add-ins > Excel add-ins and that didn't resolve the problem.
Are there any compatibility issues with 64 bit Excel?
Also, after installing Essbase add-in, what are the items that should appear

Chinese Character Problem in Essbase Integration Service & Oracle9i

I installed oracle9i on windows2000,which character set is SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.zhs16cgb231280. And I installed Essbase Integration Service 6.5.4 on HP-UNIX server. I designed an OLAP Model in Integration Services Console and I defined some dimensions name using chinese characters. When I saved the model, the chinese characters I inputed is saved as some question marks(?) in the tables in oracle 9i. After I loaded the dimension data which include the chinese charaters, the dimension data which is chinese characters also displayed question marks in the EIS console. I have added the variable NLS_LANG="SIMPLIFIED CHINESE_CHINA.zhs16cgb231280" in the .profile, but it did not work either. How can I solve this problem? Can I do any configuration on EIS files to solve this problem? Would you please help me? Thank you very much!
