Hello everyone!
Just today my 27" iMac (Mid-2011) suddenly began to perform EXTREMELY slowly. Every task is pinwheeling and 90% of the time i cannot force quit, type anything, open spotlight, open a finder window, anything. It's crippling. I cannot get anything to function. The only thing that i can do is move windows around the screen, and forcibly shut the computer down (Holding power button). In Activity Monitor nothing is using more than 500mb's of RAM (Kernel_task being the largest), and my CPU usage never spikes or raises above a few percent.
At first i thought this issue was isolated to just my game, Guild Wars 2. However these issues are occurring outside of the game and must be something system wide. I really need help with this, this computer is literally a brick now.

Thanks for replying, that's really sad to hear A few months ago i wiped the hard drive and reinstalled the OS after my computer wouldn't boot properly. I was hoping that would have gave me a new start. Is there some kind of Hard drive diagnostic i can do or supply to check for that?
Does Apple replace hard drives for this kind of thing? How much is it generally?

Remember that you can just put your Macbook to sleep by closing the lid. Unless you're not going to use it for a few days this makes more sense than shutting it down. I sleep my MBP overnight and it uses about 3% of battery power. I only shut it down if I install updates.

Apple deleted every single thing on my phone. How can I get this stuff back? Please help me.

So I plugged my phone to the computer to add new music, and then Apple said it needed to do an update. So I did. And then when my phone turns back on, pictures and stuff are gone up to a certain date (which must be when I last did a back up. The strange thing is I had some stuff storaged in the Cloud (which is really hard to use) and it was also deleted.

Restore your latest backup. If you connect the phone to your computer via USB, click on its name in iTunes, you can see the date of the latest computer backup and the latest iCloud backup.

After about a month of having my ipod it wouldnt show up on itunes. The only place it shows up is at the bottom of the screen on the tool bar where i can safely disconnect it. It doesnt come up under my computer. I've had this problem for awhile and I've tried every possible way there is to try to fix it and nothing has worked. I really dont want to have to spend 250 bucks to buy a new one that this could happen again to. So if anyone could please please help me that would be awesome.

You could convert it (say using iFFmpeg or EasyWMV for example).
Note, vlc, like many other mac software, is downloaded as a .dmg file. If it doesn't automatically expand after downloading it then double click it. It will mount on your desktop showing an icon. You could then drag that icon to wherever you desire (i.e., copy the icon representing the mouted .dmg) or double click the icon to open it up like any other folder and drag the vlc.app program to the indicated applications folder.

TS1389 I have tried every single thing on this list and none of it worked. Is there anything I can do to listen to the music I bought?

I've done everything suggested twice, deauthorised, reauthorised, uninstalled, reinstalled, and nothing. This is my first purchase on iTunes, and I am not impressed. Anyone know how to fix this? Can I at least burn the music off onto a CD and listen to it that way?

My Lacie external hard drive will not back up on Time Machine. Says there's not enough space. This has happened with every single external I've purchased. Thought TM was supposed to delete old backups??

My Lacie External backed up on Time Machine after the first back up but now says there's not enough room. I thought TM deleted old back ups to save new versions. What am I doing wrong. This happens to me constantly. Every single external hard drive I've purchased for the MacBook Pro (5 of them) has not worked either initially or at the second back up. It either isn't formatted properly so I have to go to Genius bar to help me set up for the first back up, or after the first back up, it says there's not enough space and I have to go back to Genius Bar. Is there a way I can fix this on my own?

I just purchased 2 external hardrives. a LaCie Minimus and a G Drive. Each 1 TB. The guy at Apple told me that would provide 2 good TM backups for me. My internal HD has 750 GB capacity, of which I'm using 700 GB. Perhaps the ratio is not great enough. I do wish they would have told me this before I purchased the two Bummmmer! I even had them format and get the first back-ups going because of issues I've had in the past. I also just bought a 750 GB for photos.
So, I won't be able to buy another bigger external since I've just purchased 3. Ugh. Well, I'll just exclude some files and divide things up. Eventually, I just want my 20,000 iphotos on one of the 1TB externals, and a TM back-up on another so that iphoto will function once more. It really hates how many photos I have and is brutally punishing me for it.I seriously need to do some housecleaning!
Thanks for the advice. Just moved from US to Australia last week and was hoping to upload a few photos and the domino effect has lead me to this. Just went to Genius Bar in Perth today and they told me how to reformat drive to transfer iphoto library over, but I got stuck at trying to back-up my TM.

Dots (events) for every single day in calendar (NEW issue)

Ever since I upgraded to FW 2.0 I have had "dots" appear in every single day of the calendar (symbolizing events) even though I have no events for those days.
Now - I KNOW about the issue with the recurring/repeating events as well as events that "begin" after they "end." That said, I have checked EVERY single event I have in the phone and in the calendar in Outlook and NONE of the events are repeating/recurring and all of them are set up properly with correct start/end times.
From my searching, the above seems to be what's commonly known to cause this problem. Those don't fit MY problem.
The odd thing here is, if I go backward in the month view on the calendar on the phone to February, there are no dots. There are also no events. However, if I go to March on the month view in the calendar, every single day has dots (and continues). The really weird thing here is if you look at the calendar in the month view while it's on March, you can see the last week of February at the top. And in that last week, while in the "March" view, the last week of February ALL has dots. But again, if you move back to "February," all those dots that were there disappear.
So...I'm at a loss now. I've wiped the events off the phone. Edited/pruned/etc. events in the Outlook calendar, and then re-synced with the order to overwrite that which is on the phone. Still no luck. Is this a glitch that needs to be corrected with new FW? Would a restore help? I just don't really know anymore..

I am having the same issue. However, I am syncing my calendar to my work computer and the issue presented itself when I upgraded to Office 2007 from 2003. I have since removed Office '07 and did a restore to my iphone which cleared the issue. Then did a sync again to Office 2003 and the issue re-appeared. Not sure if '07 added something to my calendar that is hidden but it is very frustrating.

Updated to iTunes 11.0.1 on my iMac 10.6.8 and it crashes every single time on launch.

As above, I foolishly updated to iTunes 11.0.1 after a software update prompt on my iMac 10.6.8, thinking I was doing a good thing getting my machine ready for my daughter's new iPad mini tomorrow.
As it stands, the iPad is going to be such a let down as iTunes is crashing every single time on launch, never my own frustration having no access to my tunes. Thanks a bunch Apple.
Can someone please state in easy to follow instructions how I might repair iTunes.

What I have ended up doing is
purchasing Snow Mountain 10.8.2 & installing
doing the disk repairs as you stated
rebooted
and eventually things seem okay with iTunes having synced an iPod, viewed playlists and played a load of tunes.
Disappointed Apple have again failed with a piece of software and have taken £13.99 that I needn't have spent but pleased to not be letting the daughter down tomorrow.

[CS3] Is there a way to stop the modal alert on EVERY SINGLE ERROR during a bulk update?

I've inherited quite a mess I'll admit -- I've got ~ 8000 pages each with different dreamweaver templates with the entire site being in a varying state of disrepair. I need to perform a global change -- I'm thinking the way to go about this is to update the templates (thre are ~40 of them, not nested) and let the process run through. However, I've encountered difficulties.
After about ~2300 files loaded into the site cache, dreamweaver crashes -- there is no error, it's an unhandled exception.... it consistently crashes at this point. I'm not sure if this is a specific page causing the problem, or if it's that I'm trying to load 8K files into the site cache.... So anyway, with it crashing consistently trying to build the site cache, I basically press "stop" whenever it tries, and that seems to abort the building and the 'update pages' screen comes up and tries to update the files.
My next problem is that there are countless errors in each of these pages and templates -- ranging from the 'template not found' when an old or outdated file is referencing a template that has been deleted -- to various mismatched head or body tags. Of course, and this is probably the most annoying thing I've ever encountered, this bulk process that should run over 1000s of files without interaction seems to feel the need to give me a modal alert for every single error. The process stops until I press 'OK'
I'm talking update 5-10 files, error... hit 'return', another 5-10 files are processed, another alert, hit 'return' -- rinse and repeat. Oh, and I made the mistake one time of hitting 'return' one too many times -- oh yes, this will STOP the current update because default focus is on the 'Stop' button, for whatever reason. and if I want to get the rest of the files, I need to run it again -- from the start.
Is there a way to silence these errors? They're already showing up in the log, I wouldn't mind going through it once the entire site has been udpated to clean thing up ... but I'm updating quite literally thousands of pages here, I would wager that 1/3 of them have some form of an error on it... do I really need to press "OK" two thousand times to do a bulk update with this program?
Any tips from the pros?

I have the same problem with my iPhone. I set up a recurring calendar event for every Thursday. That event is no longer happening during the summer, so I went in and chose one from the current month and selected Delete. Then it gve me two choices, one of which was to Delete All Future Events of this one, and that's what I chose. I figured, this way, I'll still be able to see the ones from the past, but won't have to see (or hear the alert) for the future ones.
The following week, my phone alerted me to the appointment, and even showed it on the initial screen, even though it wasn't in the calendar. I went in to the calendar and NOTHING was scheduled for that day. So why is this happening?
So I set up a new recurring event, for in the past, then went in and deleted all furture occurances, and it did the same thing... still alerted to an event that was no longer in the calendar.
I hope somebody else has found a fix, or at least a reason for why this is happening.

Having to render every single little change I make!

I know this has been asked before and discussed before and I've gone over every instruction that people have posted but I still have the problem of having to re render every single little change I make. If I shorten a clip I have to re render it if I move it a little to the left I have to re render it. Even making changes to one clip can then mean I have to re render all the other clips that I haven't even modified. I've done everything people suggest to do. I convert my footage to a format that FCE likes and will work with yet I still have to keep re rendering every little thing I do which makes the simple task of editing a music video together take forever.
Can anyone please suggest anything that I may be missing as this is getting really frustrating!!??

Cool, as soon as I can get back in front of my Mac I'll get that posted up for you. In the mean time I just thought I would post up the process I've been following and maybe you'll spot something that I'm doing wrong.
Firstly the Camcorder I'm using films in 720p HD in mpeg4 H.264 format in widescreen/16:9. Now I read on another forum that the H.264 is no good for editing in FCE so I would need to convert to something compatible. I was pointed to a program called "Mpeg Streamclip" which is what I now use to convert to an acceptable format. If you are familair with the program the process I follow is to Open up the clip I want to convert and select the option "Export To QuickTime" It then gives me the options available for this. Firstly I choose DV-PAL from the dropdown list and then slide the quality slider up to MAX. The DV-PAL option defaults at 4:3 so in another dropdown menu I change that to 16:9 to preserve my widescreen. I then select "Make Movie" and it creates a copy in .mov format and DV-PAL. I have FCE setup to work with DV-PAL (all formats) as previously mentioned and from the instructions I've followed I should now be able to work with clips un hindered by having to re render.
Now I am doing green screen footage and using the Chroma Key filter which I understand does need to be rendered but from what I have read I should only have to render once and from then on I should be ok without having to re render.
I am very new to video editing and am a music engineer mainly but in the interest of being an independant artist I'm trying to do as much by myself as I can.

Clip looks different in every single editor/player? (Canon Vixia)

I have a new camcorder and am trying to understand how things work...
I recorded a short clip and then realized it looks notably different in every app I play it back in, even if they're all set to 100% zoom. While it doesn't look incredibly different, it does look noticeably different, even though one might've thought it should look exactly the same.
The clip was made with a Canon Vixia HF R300, which is capable of Full HD, but the clip used the camera's lowest AVCHD setting of 1440x1080 ("LP" mode). It's a small MTS clip of 69.4 MB for 82 seconds of video.
In DivX Plus Player 9.0.2, it makes a very crisp clean display of 1440x1080 (measured) - but it is also clearly stretched vertically; circles are ovals and people are tall and thin. It's not ridiculously stretched, but it's unmistakable, side by side to an unstretched version. I can't find a place where DivX says what it thinks the clip's properties are.
Despite the stretching, DivX clearly gave the best-looking replay. Very crisp looking.
Premier Elements 11 says the clip's Properties are 1440x1080 with pixel aspect ratio 1.33, but at "100% mag" it actually plays as 1920x1080 (?!) and it looks grainy. But it's not stretched vertically.
In Windows Media Player 11.0, it is blown up to approx 1832x1039 even when set to video size 100%. It says the clip's properties are 1440x1088 with Aspect Ratio 1.76:1(?!). It is a little grainy, but not stretched looking.
RealPlayer 16.0.2.32 won't give clip info (it's grayed out, for some reason), but at size 100% it has the oddest thing - a very clear border (within the full-screened player) of 1440x1080, and then the video itself is playing within this border, letterbox style, at 1440 by ~808. (That's an aspect ratio of ~1.78.) This replay was not as crisp as DivX, but was probably better than the other two.
So, every single player actually plays the same clip differently. One stretches it vertically, another letterboxes it, and the other two blow it up much larger than its original 1440x1080 - even though I set every single app to 100% magnification.
What's going on here?
My theory is that perhaps the Canon used some funky way to achieve its lowest resolution AVCHD, and the various players don't know how to deal with it, and/or they have problematic / hidden / non-obvious defaults.
Possibly the camcorder actually made a 1440x808 clip, but in a 1440x1080 container. Look at how Real has an apparent aspect ratio of 1.78 - and that's what WMP says it was using, even though it didn't make sense given the dimensions. And, if DivX mistakenly stretched 1440x808 to 1440x1080... well, that's what DivX looked like.
Maybe both WMP and PE11 somehow converted it to 1920x1080... and in doing so, they did some things right, and others wrong. They correctly dropped the useless white space, if it's a 1440x808 in a 1440x1080 container. And correctly kept the proper 1.78 aspect ratio (the same as Full HD). But they incorrectly magnified it to 1920x1080.
Comments on the above... Does it sound like any of this could be possible? It's pretty amazing that a "simple setting" didn't translate to a SINGLE ONE of these popular video players/editors!

When you are dealing with 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9, that frame size is stretched to 1920 x 1080 for display after encoding. So its playback on a player is often dependent on how well or poorly or if at all the player recognizes and/or has problems reading the 16;9 flag. On the other hand 1920 x 1080 16:9 has no flag. It is what it is 1920 x 1080 16:9 square pixels.
I suggest that you go by the book with regard to Premiere Elements project preset matching the properties of your source media. So, if you import this 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 into Premiere Elements, use the appropriate 1440 x 1080 HD anamorphic 16:9 project preset. However, when it comes time for export, then use one of the 1920 x 1080 16:9 exports so that you will not have to depend on your player reading a 16:9 flag.
The results that you report regarding your camera's video in various players seems to confirm what I have just tried to say. Unless you have a special reason why not to, shoot at the highest quality settings your camera has to offer. That will be a 1920 x 1080 16:9 setting.

Same thing here with Mavericks and M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. Very easy to reproduce, Apple. Set your audio interface for the external device, try to record Photo Booth video. It will crash. Every. Single. Time. Always.

Spawning my own JPopupMenu breaks every single JComboBox in the application

That's pretty much it.
I have determined the problem is in no way caused by the contents of the popup menu, but rather the popup menu itself. I have a popup menu which contains only a button which does nothing (I've tried this same thing with just a checkbox, just a radio box, just a text widget...same thing happens). If I bring up the popup and then hide it right away, everything else works fine. If I bring up the popup and click the button, every single combo box in the application (there are dozens) is suddenly in this weird state where even though you can bring up their list popups, selecting items there won't change the contents of the text portion of the widget and in fact an action listener won't even report that an event has taken place.
When the CBs are in this state, you can use the keyboard to select items. You can also click and HOLD the mouse button and release on your selection and that will properly select the item, but clicking to select list items doesn't work.
Somehow, the JPopupMenus are swallowing all the mouse pressed events for any other popupmenus in the system. Sounds like a REALLY low level java bug to me...
OS: Win XP, Win 2000, Win ME, Solaris, FreeBSD, Linux.
JVMS: Pretty much all the ones you can run on those platforms.

Of course it's been a while since the original poster brought up this problem, but I was just having this same issue. It had nothing to do with mixing light-weight and heavy-weight components though.
In my case, I was using a JPopupMenu with some buttons in it as a sort of toolbar flyout, and whenever you would click one of the buttons, all combo boxes in the application would cease to allow simple mouse selection of items in the list. This behavior is evidently related to bug #4492892 and supposedly only applies to the Windows look and feel.
I think I've found a reasonable work-around. Setting all of the components in the popup menu to be non-focusable (ie. button.setFocusable(false); ) seems to do the trick. Just hoping others might benefit from this solution. Cheers.
