EXIF description data lost or damaged by PhotoShop Elements

Hello,
When editing a photo in PhotoShop Elements, I have, depending on the case, one of the two following issues:
- EXIF description is lost in the file saved by PhotoShop Elements
- National characters (é, à, å, ö, ø and similar) are damaged (replaced by é, à , Ã¥, ö, and à respectively).
Feeedback from a different discussion thread says that in order not to loose EXIF description, it is mandatory to use Adobe Organizer for editing photos with PSE.
As we have named more than 100.000 photos using EXIF, I would like to get any advice from other users about how to solve this topic before starting to use extensively Adobe PSE.
We believe 30-50% of descriptions contain at least one national character.
FYI
- As we edit photos on two different hard disks and exchange them both ways, Adobe Organizer is not of much help. Only the description stored in the .jpeg file will be correctly synchronized between the disks, whereas information stored in organizer will not be correctly copied.
- In parallell with PSE, we use an old software Microsoft Picture it for editing photos. This software does not recognize IPTC description, so unfortunately use of IPTC (handled correctly by PSE) is not a solution. By the way, anybody knows how to copy EXIF description to IPTC description for 100.000 photos?
- We systematically copy the date + description of the photo into the file name (using XnView to rename files) in order to make this information visible in Windows Explorer. This method seems to be incompatible with the way organizer works (renaming is not recognized by organizer).
- We have two computers, one on Windows XP and the other one on Windows Vista, so solution must be independent of Windows version.
Thanks in advance for any help or ideas about how to efficiently store descriptions of photos and make them visible in Windows Explorer.

  • EXIF data dropped when editing in Photoshop Elements 6.0 from iPhoto 8.0?

I've seen various posts about EXIF data issues, mostly about geo info. My question is:
Does iPhoto not include the EXIF data when you have it set to edit your photos in Photoshop Elements 6.0? The reason I ask is because I can easily see the EXIF data in iPhoto but when I choose to view the file info in PSE, it's not there - or at least in the detail that it was in iPhoto (i.e. camera make/model, aperture, ISO setting, shutter speed, etc.).
Anyone else notice this? What's going on here? Is this an issue with iPhoto 8.0?
Thanks for any insight and input.
    Best regards,
    Jason

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

I believe is you use PSE this way and then export out of iPhoto as Terence suggested you'll get the metadata.

  • Faces lost after editing in Photoshop Elements 6

I just upgraded to iLife '09. I use iPhoto 8.1.2 to organize my photos and Photoshop Elements 6 to edit them externally. My problem: when I edit a photo that has Faces data in PE 6 and then view the (updated) photo in iPhoto, the face data is gone and I have to reassign it manually. I don't think this is how it's supposed to work, otherwise what's the point of using an external editor. I've rebuilt my iPhoto Library a couple time to no effect. Appreciate any help on this.

How are you editing with PSE in iPhoto? I may be preaching to the choir here but FWIW:

  • Secret data sets and variables in photoshop elements.

In photoshop elements 4 thru 8, you can use data sets
and variables, with the actions recorded for them in
photoshop and then installed into photoshop elements.
They work exactly like they do in photoshop and in fact
there is already a menu item in photoshop elements,
under in export menu, called export data sets as files.

Not sure a I read you correctly but if I understand you
what you have to do is make the first two images as dynamic variables using the variable panel and save it as a data set
then replace those two images and save those as a data set
So now you have data set one and two.
You can save that as an variable library (xml)and that can be loaded into other documents.
The question is can it be actioned?
It can be scripted and do you want the same two images to replace the same two image in each document.
I think you really have to tell us more.

  • Lost serial number to Photoshop Elements 6

Can someone help?  I am trying to install my purchased (but not registered) version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6, but I lost the serial number.  Can I get a new number from Adobe.  I can not find it on the registry of my old computer, because the old one no longer has internet access.  When I try to look up the number, it gives me 20 numbers instead of 24.  Very frustrating.  Thanks for any help.

  • Organizer links between Premiere and Photoshop Elements 7.0

Has anyone experienced that Organizer in Premiere is using the data in the Organizer of Photoshop Elements?  I loaded over 15,000 photos in PSE and now they are showing up in Premiere where I don't want them and it is really gumming it up.  Very Slow and with memory issues.  Called Adobe and after the tech researched it he said the two programs are linked and there wasn't anything I could do about that and suggested I not use the Organizer, just go straight to Edit and New Project.  Anyone had problems from this lame Adobe programming?

I have a well maintained computer and I saw the same slugishness with the Organizer.
I always use a different catalog in PRE than I do in PSE.
You will need to create a new catalog in the PSE Organizer. Then when you open PRE, from the file menu you can choose to select a differnet catalog. Find the one you just created. PRE will need to restart and when it does you will have a blank organizer, which will get filed as you add media.

  • Re getting a 2011 version of Photoshop Elements

My friends..... I purchased a downloaded version of Adobe Photoshop Elements 9 in 2011.  More recently, due to some problems with OSX Mavericks, I had my operating system re-installed.  During that process, I lost said version of Photoshop Elements 9.  I am trying to find a way to find a link to it on Adobe's Web site.  Can any of you point me in the right direction?
Also, if one owns a license for Photoshop Elements 9, can one buy the latest iteration (Photoshop Elements 12) for a discounted price, based on owning a license to a prior version?
Sorry if the simplicity of these issues sends some of you into a towering rage, it is just that I am not endowed with Adobe-related omniscience, and I am just trying to work through this state of information deficit.
    Many thanks.

I have Photoshop Elements 2 on a CDwhich was installed on my Vista computer. I had to reformat the computer because of malware and I lost all the Adobe photoshop Elements files. Now when I put the CD in and  try to re-install it I get as far as clicking on the button to install Photoshop Elements 2 but nothing happens. I do not get any error message. I do have the serial number. Is there any way round this please ?

After you copy the files to your hard drive, go to the Adobe Photoshop Elements folder
