Expanding network with TC and access question

Hi All
I need to look at a new external hard disk since my current 160gb is just getting too full, so I figured it might be time to get a Time Capsule, probably the 1tb.
I've got two questions before I do..
1. Currently I have Sky Broadband. I've read a lot of people saying that it is not possible to make TC part of the existing network through wifi so have to connect. If thats the case I'm probably better off with standard network drive. Has anyone managed to do this yet? Im wondering if the reviews I've read are just that people couldn't work it out?
2. I assume this is the case, but can I access the HD as a standard network drive for general storage? Is it possible to define how much space Time Machine can use say 500gb, and leave 500gb for general usage?
Many thanks for any answers

The issue I have is that Sky Broadband forces you to use their router for broadband access. They hide the user name and password on a chip so it is not possible to configure.
Besides my phone is downstairs and my printer is upstairs in the little office. My plan was to have TC upstairs, with printer connected. Have both the TC and Sky Broadband router all part of the same network.
Then I'd use a cable to do the first backup and use wireless for incremental backups.
It does look as though I can't use this configuration. But its a bit strange, I thought it was part of standard wireless networks that you could use access points to extend them. I assume then that apple are not using all of the standards?
If that is the case, I'd have to plug it into my router as a wired option, in which case any external HD with a network interface will do half the job I need.
I'm just trying to find out if anyone has managed to get it extended from sky (or other router). Note I can change my sky router settings so in theory could change the sky one to use the apple settings, does that make a difference? Anyone had success that way?

    Its not Dreamweaver, or Access, its your servers locale, its
    set to US
    format, not the UK.
    On your page at the top use:
    <% Session.LCID = 2057 %>
    This will force the page into using UK formatted dates. Use
    it on any
    page that needs to format the page correctly.

  • Unable to connect to network with Safari and Software Update

    A user I support has encountered a problem with networking. He is unable to connect to the network with Safari and Software Update, but IS able to connect and surf with Foxfire and some other programs. Another unusual symptom is that he actually can connect to one web site (which is in his Bookmarks Bar) with Safari, but can't connect to anything else. He's also unable to navigate off of that one site he connects to. When he runs Network Diagnostics, he gets all green lights (no problems). He has fixed permissions, deleted Safari Cache and .plist, rebooted - not fixed yet. He's using 10.4.8 on a PowerPC G4. Any ideas appreciated (this is the wierdest I've seen in a while!).

    Here's what he did. After reading your post, he created another location in his network preferences, entering EXACTLY the same info that was in his old location (he even used the old DNS addresses), except using a new location name. Then he chose the new location and "everything worked". It's one of life's great mysteries. Thanks for your help - it is appreciated.

  • Full mesh VPN solution for on MPLS network with PE and CPEs

    Hi,
    We are trying to evaluate some best solution for Hub-Spoke mesh vpn solution in a MPLS network. The VPN hub router will be in PE router and all the VPN spoke will be in CPE.
    Can someone please let us know what will be the best vpn solution, we understands that there will be some technical limitations going with GETVPN but still we did counld find any documenation for possiblity of using DMVPN.
    How about the recent flexvpn, can fex-vpn work on this requirement, where can i get a design/configuration document.?
    thanks in advance.

    Hello,
    GetVPN is intended for (ANY-to-ANY) type of VPN communication, over an MPLS network with Hub and Spoke Topology, your best Option is to look for Cisco (DMVPN) implementation where this type of VPN is primarily designed for Hub & Spoke.

  • Can I expand an expanded network with airport express and extreme?

    Hi, I would like to know, what happen if I have 1 Airport Extreme and 2 Airport Express.
    First, my airport extreme is creating my wifi network in my house, and i have an airport express, expanding my wifi signal.
    What happen if I want to add another airport express, like expanding the expanded network, something like this:
    Internet
          |
         |
         |(Ethernet Cable)
         |
         |
    Airport Extreme
         |
         |
         |(Wifi)
         |
         |
    Airport Express 1
         |
         |
         |(Wifi)
         |
         |
    Airport Express 2
    So, can I expand my signal, just adding more airport express?

    So, can I expand my signal, just adding more airport express?
    No, since Apple will only allow you to "extend" the signal one time.
    It is possible to have multiple extenders, but each extender must connect directly to the "main" base station....not to another device that is already extending the network.
    Apple's extend setup works like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main base station is the "hub". Each extender resides at the end of a separate "spoke", and as such it communicates directly to the "hub"......not to another extender at the end of another spoke.

  • P1006 - networked with XP and VIsta-64 not printing more than 2 pages

    Hello - I have a dilemma with my HP P1006.  I have the printer directly plugged in (USB) with my XP (32bit) PC.  I have a Vista-64 PC networked with it.  Both (XP-32 and Vista-64) are plugged in directly to the router (not wireless).  My question is why can I not print more than two pages at a time with items opened on the Vista-64 PC?  I CAN print more than two pages with items opened in the XP-32.
    Things I've done:
    1 - uninstalled everything & reinstalled the latest drivers for the XP-32.
    2 - marked the printer as "sharing" on the XP-32.
    3 - confirmed the printer is marked "enable bidirectional sharing" under the printer properties on the XP-32 PC.
    Things I perplexed about:
    1 - why won't items (docs, webpages, etc.) print more than two pages at a time from the Vista-64 PC?
    2 - is there any reason that I should download a driver for the Vista-64 OS? If so, which PC do I download it to?
    3 - I have another printer (Lexmark inkjet) connected in the same way (except it is a serial port not USB) and it can print more than two pages of a document at one time with no problem from either the XP-32 or Vista-64 PC?  Why?
    Any thoughts on this situation?  Any suggestions are greatly appreciate.
    Thank you - Jane.

    Hi!
    I just get a system message at teh bottom of teh screen saying "output cannot be issued " and it remains on teh same screen . I goto t-code va23 and enter my quotation number and on the top I select sales document ...issue output and select my output type and print preview or prnit , it comes out of that screen into the first screen and at the bottom gives msg "Output cannot be issued". I beleiev its not allowing the smartform to display when there are more than 2 pages , because I tried it with a contact which has 2 pages and it shows output but when I try with the one having more items i.e more than 2 pages it comes out of it . Its a smartform issue and something in the smartform is causing problem I beleive.

  • Backing up with SuperDuper and CCC question

    I just got started with SD and CCC and have tried to use both of them to back up over the network but haven't had any luck.
    What I'm trying to do:
    -- Open SuperDuper or CCC (not at the same time) on Mac1 then log-on to Mac2 and tell SuperDuper or CCC to back up from Mac2 onto Ext.HD1?
    Does this technique work, or do I have to open the SD/CCC on the Mac whose drive I want to backup and copy to the external HD from there?
    Also, when SuperDuper requires a DiskImage to backup, do I have to create the disk image in DiskUtility first, or does SD do that in preparation to the backup process?
    Thanks for helping me get clear on this. First time using backup software.

    The instructions on how to make clones are fairly clear; and if you
    stick to one or the other, doing so should be fairly easy. I use CCC
    most exclusively, and the Bombich web site has helpful instruction
    on how to do most things in the header; menus beneath the icons
    are generally adequate.
    Over a network, the issue may be in how the drives and computers
    are seen; since you can assign an ethernet address to most any
    thing networked (especially printers, and computers) so maybe this
    could be something to check into; or avoid if that complicates clones.
    You can use the native Mac OS X Disk Utility to make back ups and
    disk images; and you can restore from a disk image created by D.U.
    So, you have three ways to make backups of the system or move it.
    I use Carbon Copy Cloner, since it was an early favorite and it works.
    You have to make a clone from the one you want to copy/clone; so
    you will have the data saved on the other drive. The question is not
    one that I'd consider; but I learned how to make clones as a part of
    a hardware failure troubleshooting interval, which took me a month
    after the authorized Apple tech could not find problems with my iMac
    yet I could repeatedly find and reproduce the fault; so I did all I could
    and then discussed the matter direct with AppleCare; for a real repair.
    So, now I clone both computers full drive contents to an external FW;
    and eventually wipe both computer's drives, after saving a new clone.
    And while I have them wiped; I have Disk Utility zero-overwrite them.
    That way, there is no fragmentation and I reclone the content back.
    Maybe you could explain what steps you are having issue with in the
    clone or backup process, and to simplify this, use one of the methods.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Setting up network with newer and older AirPort Extremes

    Okay, I thought this was going to be so simple. I have a newer (like a year old - square) Airport Extreme that I have three computers wirelessly hooked up to in the house. Great... so now, I want to hook up the old iMac in my son's room that doesn't have a wireless card to the network. It is too far away to use the ethernet cable into the back of my newer Airport Extreme station so I figured I'd dust off the old saucer type base station, plug the ethernet cable into that in my son's room and then just easily get the old base station to network with the newer one wirelessly.
    Not so easy. The newer one has no reference how to make a network with other base stations whatsoever and the old book describes how to with the Airport Admin Utility which is not available to the newer version, just Airport Utility and it does not have the WDA options listed. I tried to extend the network and then Doh! The whole network disappeared.
    Is this a compatibility issue with the older and newer base stations? Would it just be easier to put in a wireless card to my very old iMac, if that's even possible? Has anyone successfully networked an old and new base station together? If so how?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the discussions!
    When you have an older "g" device (the flying saucer) and a newer "n" device (the square one) in order for them to communicate using wireless only, you must configure both of them in what is known as WDS configuration.
    This is a quite tricky setup for most users. The best set of instructions that I've seen for this comes from expert user Tesserax in this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
    If you elect to try this type of setup, you will probably need to hold down the option key on your Mac while you click on the Wireless Mode selection box to get the WDS option to appear. (My guess here is that Apple "hides" it because it slows down the network substantially). But, it's the only way to do what you want to accomplish with and old and new device.
    Other options would include the wireless card you mentioned for the iMac. Even better might be a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. One adapter goes near the AirPort Extreme and the other near the iMac. The AC wiring in your home transmits the ethernet signal of the powerline. Works great, almost no configuration required and better than wireless in many cases.

  • Using MAP on networks with AIX and Oracle

    Im new to MAP. We have an environment with Windows and AIX hosts which i want to use MAP on. I see plenty of references to MAP being compatable with Linux and even HP-UX.  But will it also discover AIX hosts too?  In particular, Oracle databases
    on AIX?  Thanks!!

    Some distros of Linux and HP-UX for UNIX are what is supported, but it may be possible for MAP to inventory AIX, but no guarantees. For Oracle, when MAP inventories a Linux/UNIX machine, it queries for the RPM and DPKG installations then looks for ‘Oracle’
    in the vendor attribute. Any application that is not listed in either of those queries is not discovered by MAP.
    Therefore, if Oracle was installed by some other means then it is unlikely to be discovered through this method. Admittedly, I have almost no knowledge of how these services work and if they register software or something else.

  • Flex AdvancedDataGrid - ColumnOrder With Formatter and ItemRenderer Question For Experts

    I have a advanceddatagrid that has around 15 columns. Some are string,
    some are numbers. I have shown 4 columns below.
    The number columns have formatting done for zero precision and 2
    digits precision.  The itemRenderer is just to show Blue Color if the
    number is +ve and Red Color if the number is -ve.
    It looks something like below
    <mx:columns>
    <mx:AdvancedDataGridColumn dataField="Name" textAlign"left"/>
    <mx:AdvancedDataGridColumn dataField="Time" textAlign="right"/>
    <mx:AdvancedDataGridColumn dataField="Score" textAlign="right"  formatter="{zeroPrecisionFormatter}" sortable="true"   itemRenderer="ColorRenderer" />
    <mx:AdvancedDataGridColumn dataField="Average" textAlign="right" headerWordWrap="true" formatter="{twoPrecisionFormatter}" itemRenderer="ColorRenderer" />
    I am trying to save the users setting of column order  when he closes
    the application and reload with the same order when the user opens the
    applications. I am using SharedObjects and below is the code.
    for(var i:int=0; i< adgrid.columns.length;i++){
         var columnObject:Object = new Object();
         columnObject.columnDataField = adgrid.columns[i].dataField as String;
         columnObject.columnHeader =adgrid.columns[i].headerText as String;
         columnObject.width = adgrid.columns[i].width;
         columnArray.push(columnObject);
    and then I save the columnArray to SharedObject.
    I retrive them using the below code
    for(var i:int=0;i<columnArray.length;i++){
        adgrid.columns[i].dataField =columnArray[i].columnDataField;
        adgrid.columns[i].headerText =columnArray[i].columnHeader;
        adgrid.columns[i].width = columnArray[i].width;
    How can I save and reload the Formatter and ItemRenderer data .
    I am having trouble saving the formatter and itemrenderer and
    reloading it again.
    I would really appreciate if you can shown the code.
    How can I reshuffle the columns but can preserve all the properties of it to though  sharedobject and recover it again

    I would bypass the DataGrid all together.  Using the DataGrid , you have to mess with itemrenderers and indexes ... not
    very fun when one can avoid it.  Instead , I would do my calculations off of the dataprovider.  Then it becomes an elementary exercise of a for-loop and [Bindable] values.

  • Best way to extend WiFi network with extreme and express using access contr

    I just got my new AirPort Extreme and configured it to use 2,4 and 5 GHz. I also would like to use Access control. When I configure my AirPort Express to extend my network I see two strange things happen.
    1. On both devices I have to configure access control. I figured this is an extension of the Extreme, the Express uses the same list
    2. When I finished configuring I see the Extreme and Express flash heavily green and my wired network is becoming extreme slow. I think the two devices are talking to each other, but packets are dropping??
    I tried a hard and soft reset of the both devices, no solution.
    Does anyone recognize this problem and maybe you can tell me what the best way is to configure both devices.

  • Problems when trying to expand network with airport express 1st generation

    Hi, I have an airport express 1st generation that never actually worked, so I lent it to a friend. Now I try to install it, in Order to expand my already existing network. Whilst airport express is trying to connect to the existing network, the airport utility programme tells me that suddenly there is no response by the airport express. When I then try to restart it, there is no sign of connection at all. I tried to download an updated version of the firmware but thats not possible since I can't get a connection to the network. Any suggestions??!
    Many thanks in advance, Dominic

    A first generation AirPort Express cannot be used to "wirelessly extend" a network without resorting to configuring a WDS, a horribly inefficient compromise. Furthermore, you will need an older version of AirPort Utility to administer it from a current production MacBook Pro.
    Read this post for instructions: How to Configure an old AirPort Express
    You can use it as an additional access point in a "Roaming network". To do that requires that you connect it to your primary router with an Ethernet cable. That would be its most effective use. This KB article provides instructions: Wi-Fi base stations: Setting up and configuring a roaming network (802.11 a/b/g/n)

    They will register your domain and I've done it both ways,

  • Wireless Network with Time Capsule -- 2 Questions (5 GHz? 2nd Network?)

    Hi all:
    First off, thanks to all of you for being there. Apple Discussion Boards are the best!
    OK, to start with, here's my gear list:
    -iMac 27" QC (bought Dec. '09), 2.8 GHz, 8 GB RAM, running 10.6.4
    -Time Capsule 802.11n, 1 TB (bought April '10)
    -Airport Express 802.11n (bought April '10)
    -iPad
    -iPhone 4
    So I set up the Time Capsule a few months ago, and paired it with my iMac and with the Airport Express (to stream AirTunes), and everything has been working fine.
    The iPad and iPhone are also working fine. (In Airport Utility > Advanced > Logs, the iPhone shows a rate of 72, signal -60, and noise -94. And the iMac shows a rate of 300, signal -47, and noise -96. Don't know if that is good or bad or normal.)
    So, here are my questions:
    First, in Airport Utility > AirPort > Wireless > Wireless Network Options... should I check the box that says "5 GHz Network Name"? It is currently not checked. Would that increase performance? (All my devices - iPad, iPhone, Airport Express - are "n" devices, right? Does that mean I should check that box? Is that even an issue?)
    Second, when I first set up my wireless network I named it "MP Network." But I notice in System Preferences > Airport > Advanced that there is another network that apparently was set up when I first set up the TC. Its name is "Apple Network" plus 3 letters and 3 numbers.
    What is that? It doesn't show up anywhere else. Should I delete it? Is it using up bandwidth by being there?
    (Both networks appear in that same place on System Preferences, and both are WPA2 Personal.)
    Thanks to anyone for any input/advice. And apologies if any of the above is confusing.
    Matt

    +So it sounds like I should leave the network as is, right?+
    Yes, this makes sense for most users. Some users sometimes have trouble with a new computer that sometimes connects to the 5 GHz network and sometimes connects to the 2.4 GHz network. They want the computer to always connect to the 5 GHz network so they assign a separate name to that network and configure their computer to connect to that network first.
    +The iPhone being "g" does not reduce my overall performance, right?+
    No, because it's using the 2.4 GHz band. Faster devices use the 5 GHz band.
    +And my TC broadcasts dual band so the "n" devices get what they want and the "g" device gets what it wants...correct?+
    Yes, but you need to remember that "n" devices can connect at either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz.
    +(The 300 Mbits/sec I am getting on my iMac is good, right? And is 72 for the iPhone good, too?)+
    300 Mbps is outstanding. Most users average 220-270 with a good connection. The iPhone is a "g" device, which means it can operate up to 54 Mbps, so I'm not sure what you are seeing here.
    +As for the other issue of the "out of the box" network name, I think I will delete it. (I am of the school that enjoys things clean and avoids unnecessary clutter!) But will that create any problems for me? Is it as simple as clicking the "-" (remove) icon in System Preferences > Network > AirPort tab?+
    That's all you have to do.
    I can't remember if the password for the Apple Network xxxxxxx is stored in Keychain Access.
    Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
    Look for a listing of the Apple Network xxxxxx and delete that entry if you want to remove all evidence of that network.
