FaceTime audio half duplex / doesn't work simultaneously

I gave my parents a new iPad Air for Christmas.  Note: They are 'older' and have a lot of trouble operating electronic devices.  Before sending it to them I did check for recent updates, set up their email and contacts, installed some apps that I  find useful and uploaded some photos.  Otherwise it's a fresh unit right out of the box.
Yesterday we tried facetime with them.  The video worked as it should.  The audio seemed to be in a 'half duplex' mode on our device.  Meaning, they could hear us perfectly and normally on the iPad.  We could only hear them when we were perfectly quiet.  Any sounds or talking on our end would mute their transmission during and about 1 second after speaking.
We tried multiple calls.  (I called them and then they called me).  We tried an iphone 5 and a MacBook, the problem was consistant in all cases.  During one of our calls on the mac, my brother placed a facetime call to my phone and his connection worked perfectly, while my parent's connection continued to have the issue.
I sent them the following instructions, in hopes that it may fix the issue, but I'm doubtful.  I don't have an iPad handy (only iphones and the mac in our house) so there may be some settings that are present on the iPad and not on the iphone that they should try.  Any and all help would be appreciated!   They live on Kauai, HI so if there are any places there that would be helpful that they could visit, I would appreciate the recommendation.
Go into settings, scroll down until you see facetime. Select it. There will be some settings for facetime. One simply says facetime and there is a small green slider button next to it. Touch the button. It should slide and turn white. This disables facetime.
Go to settings, then general, then software update. It should say "checking updates" and then will either display your version (7.0.4 ?) OR it will say there is a new update and you can download it. If so, download/install. (Should be a button asking and just hit yes or ok).
Next, do a network reset:
Go to settings, general, scroll down to "reset". Select reset and then select "reset network settings". It will ask if you want to do this and yes, you want to do it.
Next, After all this is done, reboot the ipad. This is done by pressing and holding the top (power/sleep) button and the home button down at the same time. Hold it for 30-seconds maybe longer until the screen goes black and then the apple logo appears. Then let go.
(If you hold just the upper button for 5 seconds a red slider will appear to allow you to turn off the ipad. For a reset just ignore that and keep holding down the buttons).
Once it reboots, add yourself back to your network. It may ask on its own, but if not :
Go to settings, then wi-fi. Select your network and enter your password.
Last, go into settings, general, facetime and turn it back on by touching the white slider button. It should turn green.
I found two other cases that sounded like mine:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/22705969?searchText=Facetime%20duplex#2270 5969

My parents called apple tech support.  I'm not exactly sure what they did, but I think they just rebooted the iPad again, as done previously.  It seems to be working better now, although it does still cut out now and then from sounds on my end of the line.
Another thing that seems to have helped, I determined that my parents had left it in the original plastic packaging and then crammed it into the case I gave them, which may have slightly muffled their microphones.
Anyway between these two things it is working better.  We can speak on this end and still hear them talking.  But now and then it still cuts out.

  • Audio out port doesn't work well

Hi, I have a Macbook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011. Since I bought it I always use my Mac whit headphones, but since a month it only works well the left headphone. I think that the problem it was my headphones but no, because I used it on my phone and workes well. So i come to the conclusion that the audio out port doesn't work well. What you think? And what you recommend to me to fix this problem?

Probably still under warranty, but not for long. Take it to the Apple Store or AASP to have it checked ASAP.

  • Embedded audio in PDF doesn't work

    Hello,
I have a PDF-file with embedded MP3-files. I am up-to date with the latest versions of adobe reader and flash player. I just updated the software, even restarted the computer. But the audio in my PDF doesn't play..nothing clickable...
I am using Macbook Pro and running mountain Lion.
    Anybody anny suggestions?
    Regards, Sven

Hi Eric, thanks for your answer.
Yes I have,  originally I always used preview to read pdf's. I have now installed acrobat reader, because of this audio problem. But in Acrobat it doesn't work either.

  • Update audio in library doesn't work

I'm using Captivate 6.0.1.240 and the Update function for audio in the library does not work. To replace audio, I must delete the existing and import the new audio. I've tried every way I can think of; just doesn't work!

    Sreekanth,
Yes, I did try the methods that you mentioned. Plus, I tried double-clicking the audio file on the timeline. In the “Slide Audio” dialog window, I chose Add/Replace, selected the same name file from the directory, and selected “Yes” when asked if I was sure I wanted to change the audio file. It still maintained the old file.
Trying further to resolve this, I discovered that the “Update” function DOES NOT work when using .wav files. So I converted all of my audio to mp3 format. It DOES work as it should when using .mp3 files.
    Thanks for your interest.

  • Optical out and RCA audio out -- do they both work simultaneously?

On teh Apple TV, does audio get output over the digital optical output and the RCA audio jacks simulatenously?

Optical and HDMI sound works simultaneously as well. You can use an optical to SPDIF converter to convert it to coax, then send across the house via cheap RG6 satellite cable and convert it back if necessary to optical if you want your surround amplifier in an equipment closet somewhere or away from your wall mounted TV.
When you don't want surround sound, you can simply turn the TV speaker volume back up. I haven't tried the RCA jacks, but it appears that all audio outputs are active simultaneously.
When you activate volume control, the apple remote will modify the volume level of the optical output as well.

  • Audio crossfade tool doesn't work?

    Hi ,
Maybe its a well known bug but reading in the Apple pro training book by Martin Sitter , I noticed that the fade tool in the Arrange window doesn't work.
Or am I doing something wrong?
(B.t.w. This tool isn't discribed in the standard manual??)

  • Internal Audio Output suddenly doesn't work.

My internal speakers no longer work. When I go to the Sound control panel and select Built in Speakers, I get a message that says "The selected device has no output controls." The menu bar shows full volume as does the Control Panel but the volume control area is grayed and I cannot adjust anything. The same is true for the Internal Microphone setting in Inputs. I plugged a set of headphones into the jack, and get the same message. I think it must be a software error. I have restarted the computer but no luck. I repaired permissions, what else is there to try? Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Your speaker volume is kept in System Preferences under sound. Probably worthwhile double checking that.
Then, reset PRAM, which houses speaker information:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
If that reset doesn't fix it, reset the power management unit: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
Please post back if those two actions don't change it's behavior.

  • Video doesn't work on my iPad3 when I connect to Facetime or Skype, Video doesn't work on my iPad3 when I connect to Facetime or Skype?

Whenever I start Facetime, my camera just shows a black screen. Same thing happens with Skype.   Camera works fine by itself: taking photos, recording video. The problem is just with Facetime and Skype.
I'd appreciate very much your tips and input to help me solve this problem.
    Thanks!

  • Setting HP LaserJet 2200d Duplex Doesn't work

Machine is fully updated via Software Update as of 7/15/2008 (10.5.4), including the 7/15/08 HP Drivers.
    Printer: HP LaserJet 2200d
    Interface: USB
    Driver: /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/HP LaserJet 2200.gz
I installed the printer and ensured it is using the correct driver.
Open the print queue, select Info, select Driver, set the Duplex Unit checkbox and set the RAM to 8-15MB to match printer's 8MB RAM.
    Open any PDF using Preview.
    Command-P to print
Set pages to print From 1 to 2 (to save resources, has no effect on this behavior)
    Open Layout
    Set Duplex to Long-edge binding
    press Print
Resulting job is printed single-sided on two sheets.
I use Preview and PDFs as an example application. Every application I have tried prints single-sided when long-edge is set.
Interestingly, if I issue the following shell command, duplexing is properly enabled:
    lp -P 1-2 -o sides=two-sided-long-edge samefile.pdf
Also, when I print to this print queue over the network from a Tiger 10.4.11 machine, duplexing is properly enabled.
    Is there a fix?

Yes, I was using a "No banner" preset here at home, too. Not exactly sure why.
Printing using "Standard" then setting two-sided worked.
Exiting Preview then using "Last Used Settings" also resulted in duplex printing.
I wonder if this has something to do with a printer preset being migrated from a 10.4 account or something....
Since deleting that preset, I haven't been able to get it to fail either. Even creating new presets, selecting it, then adding duplex.

  • Importing audio from iTunes doesn't work

GarageBand won't let me import audio files (unprotected) from the media browser. When I try to drag a file into the GarageBand window, it simply snaps back.
When I right-click on the file and select "Show in Finder" it tells me, the file can't be found.
When I go to the same file in iTunes and select "Show in Finder" iTunes has no problem shown me the file.
Dragging the file to the desktop from iTunes and to GarageBand from there works.
    ???

I had the same issue recently.
I found a workaround which resolved in my case, which was to drag the (DRM protected) file from iTunes to my desktop and THEN to GB.

  • Audio Line-in doesn't work....

When trying to use my audio line in port, i.e. in Logic Express, or using Amplitube, all i get is a popping when i try and select the line in as the audio input instead of the built in mic. Also in Logic Express/Pro i have no record function and i cant seem to get it to recognise the audio in port in that either.
I was running Logic pro and before that express on my emac about 2 months ago and i had no problem, and used the same copy on my iMac...

    Hi,
It's been a while since I've used Logic, but to remedy the clicking/popping try increasing the amount and size of Disk Buffers (Process Buffer Range). Also, play around with the Audio Buffers (I/O Buffer Size) or reduce it: particularly if it is already set at 1024 samples. You can find these under Audio Preferences and Drivers - Core Audio in Logic.
The clicking and popping noises when you use the built-in line on your iMac sounds like a lack of RAM. If you're not using a Universal version of Logic then it will use more RAM and Processor time on an Intel-Mac due to having to run through Rosetta. The amount RAM you have and the amount of Audio Buffers the programme can handle are in direct correlation - the more RAM you have, the higher the buffer sample rate you can use.
And to remedy the issue with no record function - you need to set up your Audio In and Out as an Aggregate Device. If you don't know how to do this already:
Go to Macintosh HD/Applications/Utilities and launch Audio MIDI Setup. Once open press ShiftCommandA or go to the audio menu on the start bar. The Aggregate Device window will open and display any devices already created (I assume that there won't be any). Click on the + button just below the top pane to create a new device and the - button to delete a device. Click on Aggregate device in the top pane (if it's not already selected), and in the bottom pane check the use box next to the Audio Devices you wish to include (in this case Built-in Input/Output. Next to each Audio Device the number of in's and out's will say 2 - this is normal as the Built-in In/Output are capable of both Analogue and Digital signals.
Back in Audio MIDI setup you can adjust the properties (bit rates/frequency etc.) for the Aggregate Device. The next time you open Logic the Aggregate device should be visible in the Drivers pane of audio Properties, which you can then choose to use. If not, go to sound in System Preferences and set your default In/Out to Aggregate Device.
    Hope that helps.

  • Upgraded no print duplex doesn't work

I have a HP laserjet pro 1102w printer which is still in stores.  I upgraded to Mt Lion and now my printer will no longer duplex.  The printer used to allow for manual duplexing, but now I would need to print each page individually to instead of having the duplex happen.  I have verified with HP that I have the lastest driver installed, and I do.  I have also tried deleting and re-adding the printer multiple times.
Anyone find a solution to get this important function back?  The option is visible, but grey so I can't change it to duplex.  I'm guessing it has something to do with the AirPrint.
Thanks for your help!  I really need to do some course printing today.

I knew if I posted a question I'd figure it out.  It was Airprint.  Uninstalled the printer and installed not using the Airprint option.  Duplex option is now available again.

  • Hi, I have an iPod and my cousin has a MacBook Pro, but whenever we try to FaceTime each other, it doesn't work. Plus, we don't know what to put besides our names in our contacts. What do I put for his contact number?

How can I FaceTime him without getting, "This person is not availible?

Settings > FaceTime. Be sure you have an Apple ID on file, and you should also see a header that says "You can be reached for video calls at:" where you can add an email address. The email address that is entered here is the email address you should use to FaceTime the other person.

  • People can FaceTime me but when I try to FaceTime someone it's doesn't work. How can I fix this?

I need to be able to FaceTime people please help me

This link will take you to the help article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4319
Troubleshooting is mentioned at the bottom of the page:
    Additional Information
    Troubleshooting FaceTime calls
If you're unable to activate or make FaceTime calls, try turning FaceTime off and on again using the following:
    iPhone: Settings > Phone
iPad 2 and iPod touch (4th generation): Settings > FaceTime
FaceTime for Mac: FaceTime > Preferences
If you can't place a FaceTime call to a particular contact, try the following:
Verify that you have the correct phone number or email address.
Use the correct method of contacting the person. If you are calling:
An iPhone 4 user: Use the phone number
An iPad 2, iPod touch, or FaceTime for Mac user: Use the email address
Check that each person has an active Wi-Fi connection. If you are using router, firewall, or security software that restricts Internet access, verify that port forwarding is enabled.
Verify that the date and time are set correctly on your iOS device or Mac.
The Apple ID you are using to register FaceTime on iPad 2, iPod touch, or FaceTime for Mac must be an email address. If your Apple ID is not an email address, you can change it on appleid.apple.com. This article provides instructions on how to change the Apple ID.
When calling someone using their email address, they must verify that email address for use with FaceTime and be signed in to their Apple ID account. They can verify they are signed in using:
iPad 2 and iPod touch (4th generation): Settings > FaceTime
FaceTime for Mac: FaceTime > Preferences
Note: If verification is pending, follow the instructions in the email that was sent to that email address to complete verification.
