Does anyone know when Final Cut Express will be switching to a Universal software so it can be used on the new iMacs?

The 13" will do the trick for what you describe as your needs, Be sure to consider how you will backup your data -- need an external drive?
Also be sure to check with your college or division of study to see what they recommend. If they are hostile to Macs, you may be on your own for finding support. But in most major cities, that will not be too hard.

You can get a new third party battery fairly cheap on eBay. Every MacBook from 2006 through Mid 2009 except the Late 2008 Aluminum Unibody and the Late 2009 and 2010 White Unibodies use the same A1185 battery.

Option for university

I am going to university next year and it is a small uni. There is group work and presentations for assignments that will need to be done during tutorials. I have a dell desktop (4 years old) and a dell laptop (loaned from my high school, which i am returning). Basically after next month, I will only have a desktop.
I will be commuting to uni which is in the city, Sydney. My textbooks will be available as e-books. I will handwrite notes in lectures (including the use of a stylus if necessary) and commute one hour every day. My uses include typing up papers, internet, email, music/movies, photos, video chat and an organiser.
The only times I need protability is for group work, making powerpoint presentations and library (if no computers are available). I would like a laptop, however the costs add up for a case, cooling pad, security locks. My concerns with getting a laptop only include if it gets stolen and the heaviness of a larger screen (i would need 15" if it is my only device).
I would love an iPad 2 if it would suit my needs
I came up with a few options:
1. iMac 21.5" + ipad 2 16GB
2. Macbook Pro 13" only
3. Macbook Pro 13" + iPad 2 16GB
4. Macbook Pro 15" only
5. iMac 21.5" + a cheap dell laptop or netbook.
Which option would be suit my needs?

What about a 13" MBA? The same number of pixels as a 15" MBP but in a 13" screen size.
You say you have a desktop PC, you can use the display as a monitor for your MacBook. PC displays usually have more than one input.
The iPad 1 is still available if you want to save a few more dollars.

SSO does not work in Universe Designer

I have a problem getting an error within Universe Designer the error is :
"DBD: Unable to connect to SAP BW server Incomplete logon data"
Installed below :
BOBJ XI 3.1 installed
SAP GUI 7.10
SAP Java Connector
SAP Integration Kit
All is run on the server machine.
SSO setup i CMS etc. and i works fine in the beginning and i can go into Universe Designer and create a SSO connection which responds etc. and i can create universes which is fine. I can go to webi and create an new report using the universe and select som measures and dimension and execute query, but it only works a couple of times then it starts to fails with an xml error. After that going to universe designer an into connection i cannot longer get in touch with my Bex query in SAP BW ! and that is where my problem allways ends, so now i cannot connect using SSO in Universe Designer.
Found technote 1250890 but it only says that i need to install integration kit on my client, but my installation is all i one and is installed.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated !

Help! Lost all Captured Video Files Using FCE 3.5 and Lacie 1TB Drive

Hi all...
I was wondering if anyone here could advise me on a most dissapointing occurence...
A few weeks ago, I started learning Final Cut Express 3.5. I began by setting my scratch disk to my new Lacie 1TB drive and loading about 5 tapes to the drive via the capture function in FCE... all went well. I then spent the next couple of days organizing all the clips and subclips into bins that I made based on the kind of clips I had shot (my first doc attempt on a local photographer).
Editing a trailer of sorts to practice in FCE, I slowly but surely came to understand the power and functionality of FCE... things were going well. Along with the clips, I also added folders on the hard drive with still photographs, title cards made in photoshop and sound clips that I had made of traffic noises with a mp3 recorder (all sound files were converted to aiff files in quicktime pro). All these files from the hard drive were then imported into FCE and put into their own bins in the browser to keep them seperate from everything else.
Late last night, while opening FCE for another session, the software reported that all of my video files were "offline" and "did I want to reconnect them". I'd had this warning before, but only when my Lacie drive hadn't been turned on while starting up FCE... this time it was on and I was still getting the reconnect warning.
Now I find that ALL of my video files are gone!! The 200 GB of space they took up on the Lacie drive has been regained... either deleted by FCE or by the drive itself... I don't know which. The weird thing is, that the folders containing the sound, and still photos that i put together are still fine, both on the Lacie drive AND in FCE. You'd think if it was a faulty drive that all files would be deleted, or if it was FCE going beserk, that it would kill all bins, not just the video files...
This issue really is difficult because I just don't know which item is at fault and I'm reluctant to try downloading all my data again because I don't know piece of hardware is killing my files... My FCE is not a pirated copy... am using a mac book pro 15" 2 years old w/OS 10.4.11.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated!!!

Problem solved - I had deleted all the necessary preference files. I did not reinstall Quicktime, thanks for the suggestions, though. I called Apple Care. A very helpful person on the other end of the phone directed me to trash the preferences (again). No luck. He asked me to create a new user, which I had not done, the problem was still there. The fix was a reinstall of FCE HD. All's good now. Thanks, Apple Care!

Hi there, I will be going to university later this year and am hoping to take advantage of the apple store's "back to school scheme" to buy a new laptop.
I will be doing a business economics degree so laptop will primarily be used for:
- Word processing, writing notes/papers etc.
- Surfing the internet (research/more casual use eg twitter etc)
- iPhoto (personal use)
I don't tend to use any "professional" applications or anything so I am debating whether to go for a MacBook Pro or a MacBook Air.
Aside from price, which would you recommend as the best laptop for a university student?

Best mac to get for general university tasks?

Im going to university in September and like the sound of the MacBook air. However I'm just worried that I wont have enough memory even though I am doing animal science it will be mainly written tasks than anything more production like...

If you want something to carry around campus the MBA is a great computer - I'm totally happy with mine. Dominic's suggestion for the 256GB model is spot on and 8GB of RAM should see you safely thru your undergraduate years.
I've started seeing more and more students carrying iPads with keyboard covers and I took that route myself this spring at a convention. I needed to travel extra light so I left the computer and charger at home. The MBA has great battery life for a full notebook but doesn't come close to matching the all day goodness of an iPad. Add a mini or iMac in the dorm and you're all set.

Initial view of Universal Worklist has no tasks.

We have a universal worklist with one tab only (Tasks)
When a user logs on and goes to Universal Worklist iView, there is no tasks displayed,
Once he clicks on the tab (Tasks) all the messages start to appear.
Please suggest some settings that would enable Universal Worklist to populate all the tasks when user goes on to Universal Worklist first time.

We are on Netweaver 2004 s SP17
to give you some more background on this, we have changed and uploaded a new configuration file to shows Tasks tab only on UWL,
I am not sure this issue was existing before we updated because there was Alerts tab which had not data and everytime, we had to click on the tasks tab.

Filipino going to Uni in UK?

I signed up with the intention to buy a year of Spotify for my cousin for her birthday. However, I was searching this forum and now I am confused whether I should or not. I am Filipino as is she, but she will be going to University in the UK come October, then back here for like a month in Decemember, then back to the UK till June, and then back here for 4 months. Rinse and repeat for 3 years. Is it a waste of money to buy her Permium? Will her subscription work in the UK and, if so, will it work again when she is back home for breaks? Any gotchas or hoops she will have to jump through that would make this unfeasable or overly annoying for her? Also, my account says I am in the US. Why is that? How do I fix this? Thanks!

Hi silkshadow. It all depends on how you will be buying premium for your cousin. If a UK method of payment is used it will be no problem, and she'll have no issues coming back to the Philipenes if it's just for a month (though offline listening will be the safest bet). I don't know if giftcards are locked to specific regions, but if I had to guess, that would probably be the best way to go about it. Again, I'm not 100% sure though, so hopefully somoene else could chime in.
As for your account, if you're using a VPN or a proxy that's the most likely reason you're in the US. Otherwise, if you have a free account you can edit your location through your profile settings, or, as a premium user, through your payment method.

HT3835 Will final cut express 3.5 run on the newer mac os 10.8 or 10.9?

I am going to be purchasing a MacBook Pro when the newest model is released. I am wondering if I can run my Final Cut Express 3.5 with the latest operating system.

I've been using it with Lion and Mountain Lion and it is working well. It was updated to 3.5.1 via Software Update.
However, you will have a problem with the installer as I got the "PPC applications are not supported" when I tried to install it in Lion after doing a fresh install (although FCE is a Universal application, the installer appears to be PPC). So, I followed the file locations in this article and moved every file from my Snow Leopard partition to the Lion partition into the same folder/location. Restarted and it has been working since.

Pay for upgrade only to use on intel mac?

I upgraded from FCE 2.0 to FCE 3.0 HD earlier this year (paid $99). I did this mainly because after upgrading to Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) keyboard shortcuts started to crash FCE when using local keymap (finnish). I also thought, that by doing so I would not have to pay so much than for upgrading later to 4.0 or and so on. Usually upgrades tend to be cheaper, if you have more recent version from which to upgrade.
Now I have new, shiny intel mac (macbook 2GHz) and I'd like to use my FCE HD on it for now on, because I was told that all apple applications were already universal-versions by now. They are indeed, but it seems that only version 3.5 of fce hd is universal, and I would have to upgrade again, only to get the software working again (like last time, when keyboard shortcuts stopped working). However, it seems that upgrade from 2.0->3.5 costs as much as upgrade from 3.0->3.5. So upgraders who have already upgraded once (or even twice for that matter) have to pay the whole upgrade price again. And you can't get universal version of fce hd from software update.
Is this the way apple is rewarding its loyal customers who actively buy product upgrades? I'm not against paying for upgrades, but i'm not willing to upgrade twice a year only to keep the software i've already paid for running on my computer. I was planning to upgrade again when version 4.0 with serious upgrades comes out, but i'm not going to pay $99 then again, because it seems that upgrade price from 3.0->4.0 or 3.5->4.0 will be the same.
Meanwhile, I'll seek cheaper sources to keep my paid software running on my mac.

FCE 3.0 was introduced nearly a year before the Intel Macs and it was never claimed to be a UB version.
Unfortunately many people bought it thinking it would work on the new machines.
To be fair to Apple, if you read the small print on the box, you will see that as a system requirement it needs a G4 or G5 processor.
The poor customer was left to infer that an Intel processor would not work properly.
Definitely a case of "Caveat Emptor".
You probably can use FCE if you press the "esc" key whenever, you get the error message.

Error While Registering a system in UWL

Hi
I have configured a system in UWL after going to Universal Worklist Administration -> Configuration Framework Page -> UWL Systems Configuration.
Now when i am registering it, it shows the following
error:
System SAP_YY_XXXX: com/sap/portal/services/api/connectorgateway/IConnectorGatewayService
Though the corresponding entry for the gateway information has been made in the services file in the drivers/etc:
sapqw41 3341/tcp # SAP Systems Gateway
But still the same error is coming.
Is there any other step which is being missed out.
Any information in this regard will be helpful.

It is giving the same error in the backend also.when i click the workitem it is giving the "error while executing the workflow Close Window".
Is there a problem with the workflow template or the UWL Configuration.

Satellite A100-049 - CD ROM drive no longer found

My satellite A100-049 no longer sees my CD rom drive, It won't auto play any discs, and when I double click a shortcut to a program that uses a disc it says 'no cd-rom drive found'.
I've tried updating the driver but I already have the most up to date one. It was fine yesterday, before I installed Norton 360- I don't know if that has anything to do with it. My operating system is vista home premium.
I really need help quickly as I'm going to university in under 3 weeks and the cd rom drive is vital to my course.

Its very strange that your CD/DVD drive does not work longer after the Norton 360 installation. For me it looks like the Norton 360 has modified some registry keys and therefore the drive malfunctions.
I would recommend removing the CD/DVD drive from the device manager.
Then restart the notebook. After new reboot the windows OS should recognize the new hardware (CD/DVD drive) and should install it again.
Then start the registry and remove the upper and lower filter values from this registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
then reboot and test again!
