FCP 3 TO FCP 5

I am planning to buy a new Dual-core 2GHz PowerPC G5 and just found out that I won't be able to use FCP 3. Can I upgrade from FCP 3 to FCP 5, and how much will that cost me ?
Thank you,
Nelson

You either need to either:
1) use the following hack -
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/feedback/finalcut_pro_on_oldmacs.html
or
2) Upgrade to FCP 5

  • FCP-- MOTION-- FCP WORKFLOW

I've posted a variation of this question in the QT forum but I think that the MOTION experts might provide valuble input for this quandary. Here's what's happening (I've read the posts under long render times in the FCP forum but nobody has really spelled out what the problem is.):
I opened up a new project in FCP and imported a large still (TIFF pixel dimentions:2880 X 1920). I created a new sequence and then placed the clip of the still frame in the timeline. I then SEND TO -->MOTION PROJECT and embed it so that it feedsback any changes to FCP automatically. Now in MOTION I select the layer with the still image and REPLICATE so that there are 50 copies of the same obeject arranged in a stack and then adjust the scale so that the topmost object has a scale close to zero and the last object has a scale around 350%. Lastly I add a attract to behavior so that the objects become animated and kind of look like a warping vortex. Theres also a mask thrown in somewhere. So that's it:1 large still, 1 replicator, 1 behavior, 1 mask, 2 layers for about 60 seconds. Everything in Motion moves fine. I think the playback stutters a little and it does drop a couple of frames, but I get the main idea and I can monitor in real time on an external monitor. I save and then move back to FCP. Back in FCP things slow way down. It takes FCP about three minutes just to get back up to speed and display the current playhead frame. I cannot playback the clip at all because the program just kind of hangs and is not responsive at all. I have tried using QT Conversion with this clip and tried to Export to IPOD. It estimated 15 hours to do the job. A MPEG 2 export using COMPRESSOR with all settings on best and highest took 24 hours to complete. That's around 45 minutes per frame!!
Can someone detail the actual specifics of how motion and fcp differ in accessing/reading data and then how compression actually works as well?
    Any takers?
    Please enlighten me.

    Thanks for the tip Patrick.
The scary thing is that I've already checked out that material. I obviously need to re-read it(maybe a couple of times). The nuts and bolts section spells out really the ins and out of Motion and the way it is hardware based and and GPU dependent. I understand that it was overkill. I get that. I'm definitely looking at this as a how can I learn from my mistake angle, not a this computer *****, or this software is buggy angle.
It might sound worse than it actually was (for Motion that is). Motion was totally functional accessing and modifying the clip. I could add a MIDI behavior and modify the scale of the layer or object. It was a little slow but it was responsive. FCP on the other hand is where I ate dirt. Not only in the compression stage but also just playback. Like I mentioned before after modifying and saving the embedded .motn clip in Motion and bouncing back to FCP it takes FCP about 3-5 minutes just to read and display the current frame. Before that the pointer just pinwheels. How is it that Motion is able to read the clip while FCP almost crashes trying to read one frame?

  • FCP X : FCP's folders in a subdirectory on my external hard drive ?

    Hi,
I wanted to have my videos and projects for Final Cut Pro X on an external hard drive. I tried with the one I had and it didn't recognize it (apparently because it's used for Time Machine). Anyway, I bought a new one and now FCP recognizes it.
Final Cut Pro X create folders (Final Cut Events, Final Cut Projects...) at the root of my hard drive. I would like to have those folders in a subdirectory called Final Cut Pro X, because I want to add other things on that hard drive.
    Basically here's what I would like :
Hard Drive > Final Cut Pro X (folder created by me) > Final Cut Events
Hard Drive > Final Cut Pro X (folder created by me) > Final Cut Projects
How can I do that ? Sorry if it's basics 1.0.1, I'll keep trying to find an answer to that while waiting for a answer.

I've read in other posts that those folders should be at the root of the hard drive... but it really looks messy.   Do they have to be at the root so that it works or is it an advice so that it works better ?

  • Fcp - color - fcp ALL BLURRY in PAL Anamorphic - any ideas?

ok, so admittedly i'm not working on my normal system but i've been using color (and final touch before that) for a while on a number of small and large fcp projects (dv, hdv, prores) and now i'm working on a small tv show for austrian broadcasting.
naturally the project is in pal and it is in standard pal anamorphic.
when i send to color everything looks ok, my viewer is squeezed (there is no pal anamorphic setting for color it seems, just regular pal 4x3) but checking the geometry it all looks good so i wasn't concerned.
i do a correct on a 2-minute section to test everything and it all looks good in color.
i render everything out and send it back to fcp and lo and behold EVERYTHING is BLURRY.
as if a defocus filter has been applied.
i've tried a bunch of different settings, i've removed grades, de-interlace, everything and it still comes back blurry.
    any ideas?
    thanks,
    nick.

    FCP issue?
Check the rendered clips OUTSIDE of FCP, ie in Quicktime. There may be a scaling/RTE/proxy thing happening if there is not an exact match between the rendered material and the way FCP wants to handle it. Check Audio/Video settings. The anamorphic nature may be throwing a curve.

  • FCP- Motion- FCP?!

    HI ALL,
    1) FCP for Scale-In the video will be unsharp ; Motion will be the best tool for Zoom-In (Scale-In)?
    2) Say, Mastered/Edited video in FCP then send to Motion for further effects processing and now do the video be able to return to FCP after saved in Motion?
    Thanks for now and appreciate!

GAH!! I just now realized what you were talking about with the camera zoom quote above.
I thought you actually meant a CAMERA's zoom!! No no no... in Motion, you can zoom in the virtual camera if you have something in 3D space created in Motion!! That's what that was talking about.
No... just 'zooming' in on a video won't be any better in FCP or in Motion whether you make it a 3d world or not.
Ok... sorry for the misunderstanding. But hopefully the render got it to something you like. For me... anything over 133 scale is really bad. 133 is what I used to do to make a 4:3 video into a 16:9. It worked just well enough not to care, but I'd never want to do that for professional broadcast.
But then again... I've also scaled something a lot more and used it as an 'effect cut' if you grunge it up a bit and make it desaturated it can have a nice (though over used) effect on an interview. The grunging up hides the soft nature of the over-scale.

  • I'm trying to install FCP, but FCP option dimmed

    Hello,
I'm attempting to install FCP on Macbook Pro. I put the FCP install disk in computer. For some reason when it gets to what is going to be installed the Final Cut Pro option is dimmed so that I can't check it as an option to load. I have attempted to clear the computer of all FCP studio suite files and re-install but nothing has worked. I don't have logic on the computer.
    Can anyone help?

Full install. It's not checked despite it being dimmed. Yes it is a MBP 4 gig 2.66 mhz. I've owned it less than a month. I have installed FCP several times on several computers over the years. This is my 1st install with this program on this computer and I'm having all these problems. Sorry for the rant...

I started a project on FCP and wanted to continue the project at ome on FCP Express. I troed to open the project but I got "-error 41"
    Any suggestions would be great!

    Hi(Bonjour)!
FCP can open FCE's projects, but FCE cannot open FCP's one.

  • FCP HD ---- FCP 5.1 (Universal)

I've just recieved my new FCP Studio (Universal) from apple to use on a G5 quad. I currently have FCP HD on a G5 dual. My question is whether or not my projects from FCP HD will open in FCP Studio 5.1

If you do need backwards compatablity, read up on XML.
...and keep your expectations low. XML can be used to backwards, but it will not be seamless.

  • Looking for FCP - Avid - FCP workflow suggestion

I work with FCP on projects where we capture an entire film (two reels, about 20GB DVPal), then edit this down to 30 or so sec spots and then online at Blackmagic 10bit. Right now we have some freelancers who will be working on their own computers at home using Avid Express HD on Mac laptops, and then delivering us an edl of their cut. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a way where we could capture the film here and then transfer to an external drive for the freelancer to cut the promo that would work in Avid. I gave them a clip captured at DVPal to test, but it took over 5 minutes to convert a clip to OMF?? for use in Avid, and the clip was only 1min30 long, which isn't much use when we will be giving them a 90 min film. I know this seems like an odd way to do it, but we're trying to create the least amount of work at both ends.
I don't know anything about Avid but figured since the workflow begins in FCP, I should post here, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, and Automatic Duck isn't possible due to cost restraints, not sure if it would help anyway.

Since avid uses the OMFI format then there is no easy direct way to xfer media between the two. You can take the diged files from FCP (which are quicktime) and import them into Avid but they are transcoded to OMFI and I am almost certain (but not 100% - and not at my Avid this month so I can't test) that you loose timecode.
The couple of time I've had to do just this I had the material dubbed to DVCam for capture in Avid. Simple, cheap. Timecode is fine. Capture in Avid, make the edit, export EDL (taking care not to use fx and things that won't transfer), then recapture from originals in FCP. Good luck.

  • FCP to FCP without backgrounds

    Hello.
In doing the lower third titles for a video project, I had an intern create the titles on a computer in our office other than my own (where I am editing the final project). She used an imported QT graphic for the animation of the lower third, and then used FCP title tool to put the text on top of it. Now I want to bring those titles over to my computer to edit in. The problem is that if I do a QT output FCP creates a black background and then you can't see the subject, just the titles and graphic. So I tried sending the FCP Project File over using our server, thinking I could just re-link the media and re-render. But when I try to open it on my computer it gives me the "General Error".
Is there a way to do this? Is there a way to export from FCP without adding in a background (as there is in LiveType)?
    Thanks,
    Ariel.

Not to jump in on X's answer, but you Export using QuickTime Conversion... and select the codec as Animation with the colors set to Millions+ (the + is your alpha channel). Also you must export it unrendered or you won't get your alpha channel...
    Or...
Just export it as a QuickTime Movie... and put that lower third animation on V2, the exported movie on V3 and set it's composite mode to Travel Matte Alpha... (presumably your sequence is on V1). It will then use the alpha channel of that lower third animation you've got on V2.

  • Round tripping fcp motion fcp problem

    Hi, FCS3...
i have 2 timelines in the same fcp project, I sent the first one to motion, added some titles/graphics, saved in motion and upon returning to fcp the changes were present, only requiring render.
with the 2nd timeline i followed the same procedure, send to motion, added titles etc & saved. However on returning to fcp the changes do not appear. Have tried this 4 or 5 times now and the changes are never reflected. My only way out is to render out in motion which is fine for what i require, but it is bugging me why the difference. The two timelines are composed of the same source material, just different edits.
    Any ideas?

Are you making sure that "embed Motion project" is checked in the Send To dialog box every time?

  • Fcp - soundtrack- fcp

started with an fcp project. sent to soundtrack. want to send back to fcp. put .aif ending on soundtrack project being sent. fcp says 'can take this xml project'.
start with fcp & go to import xml and can import from soundtrack but all the media isn't there.
    what am I doing wrong?

    re-phrase;
all tracks r transfered to strk but most of them appear offline.

  • Fcp - stp- fcp

I've sent a project from fcp to soundtrack and have done my work. now I have to send back to fcp. the file has an aif extension and yet after export fcp says 'can't except .xml files.' why can't I get my stp proj back in fcp?
    thanks

Not sure what's going on as I've never worked this way, however, you can just find the aif files you've exported and bring them manually into fcp and add these to your sequence (muting your original audio).

  • FCP X & FCP 6

I use FCP X and like to do a preliminary edit before sending to a professional editor - he uses FXP 6. Is there any way of creating a project in FCP X and then editing further in FCP 6?

This will get you to FCP7:
    http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xto7-for-final-cut-pro/id487899517?mt=12
From there you might be able to open in FCP7 and export an older version XML to go back to FCP6.  YMMV

  • FCP vs FCP express and XDCAMex

    Hello everyone,
I want to use 4 Macbookpro with fcp express to do transfert of excam EX clip ( with the sony plugin ) once clip are capture do only in and out to clip in my bin. After that close the project and let a editor open the same project but with FCP to finish it. After the people with final cut express want to reopen the project and see it. and may be do some minor correction
1- Does FCP express support XDCAM EX CODEC video ?
2- Does FCP can open a FCP express project ?
3- Does FCP express can open a FCP project ?

    It solve all.
we need to buy fcp for the news departement
    thanks

  • FCP 6.0.1 hangs...

After I capture for my HDV device (Sony), FCP gives the spinning wheel of death and I'm Forced quit on FCP.
FCP seems to be very fragile when it comes to capturing video/audio -- still.
So for the heck of it I open iMovie HD and it recognizes my camcorder without any of my input, I click on Import and it captures the footage. Can't belive a product that came with my MacPro actually does a better job than a $1700+ product?
What the heck is going on?
    Rob.

I'm a software engineer and I know what a user error is and having a spinning wheel that never stops spinning with NO information ever provided to the user is MOST DEFINITELY NOT user error.
There are two basic approaches to managing user input:
    1. Don't let them shoot themselves in the foot
    2. If you do let them shoot themselves in the foot at least trap for it and let them know which foot they hit
Neither of these is happening in FCP 6. I don't see how you can equate a spinning wheel and FCP not responding to being "user error" -- simply because FCP has stopped responding (you have no way of knowing anything).
I agree FCP is not simple and that is fine, no complaints there -- it's a great product and I love it for what it can do. But when it comes to working with other devices it was fragile in FCS and is fragile in FCS2 -- it should at the very least "timeout" if it is having a problem working with the device/camcorder. I define "fragile" as meaning if something is NOT configured exactly right (aka user shooting themselves in the foot) FCP should not go to never never land (spinning wheel of death) with the only way to come back to reality is with a Force to Quit.
But regardless of whether this is or isn't user error (which really is NOT relevant), no information is provide to help the user avoid the situation or even attempt to fix the situation. For what has cost me $1800 -- connecting to an external device/camcorder should NOT be a roll the dice situation.
    $1300 FCS + upgrade to FCS2 $500 = about $1800 actually.
    Rob.
