File Server and Permissions

We are using Coldfusion 8.  Does anyone know a way to set permissions on a file server so my users in my cfapplication are the only people that can access the files in a specific folder on that server?  I ask this because we have a lot of public folders on this server and now we want to add some private folders only accesable via people using the application.

If what you are asking is "how can I setup a folder on my fileserver so that files that are accessed through my CF application using tags such as CFFILE are the only ones that can access it" then the answer is to 1) Change the login information for the CF services from the local system service to a domain account, being sure to give that account admin privs, 2) on the file server only give access to the domain user that you just created in step 1.
However, if your CF app is allowing users to access that folder via mechanisms like HREF links (ie, where the account accessing the folder is not the CF account, but the user that is logged into windows running a browser), then you need to put those users in a group and give that group the sole access to the folder.
Scenario #1 presumes that your CF app is doing some sort of authentication so that it knows who is allowed to use it to get to that folder.

  • Replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 files server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished

I am wanting to replace a 2003 (not R2) File Server with a 2012R2 file server and preferably keep the same machine name and IP when finished.  For the moment I just need some "high level" guidance, little details can be worked out once I know
which direction I will go.  I was considering that DFS might be a way to help get through the process although when finished the 2012R2 Files server will be by itself with no other file server planned at this time.  DFS can stay installed for maybe
future purposes but clearly I wouldn't need the DFS Replication with only one machine.
Here's a few details of the environment....
    1.  DC's are 2012R2 but it is still 2003 DFL because the old 2003 DCs are still present.  But likely they will be gone and the DFL elevated before I start on the File Server project
    2. Nearly all machines in the facility have a shortcut on the "All Users" Desktop that points to the existing old File Server.  Editing or replacing that shortcut would be a major pain,...hence why I want to keep the same machine name at least,
and maybe the same IP if not too much trouble.  This way the existing shortcut would continue to work with the new 2012R2 File Server.  The UNC path represented in that shortcut is also configured into one or more of our major business applications,
futher emphasizing the need to keep the UNC path the same throughout the process.
    3. The facility runs 24/7/365 but is "light" on weekends.  The political environment is such that there is little to no tolerance for any down time at all.
    4. Would DFS (based from the 2012R2 machine) be a good tool to get where I need to go?
    Thanks for any suggestions.

    Hi Sharon,
I've done some more reading and have a few new ideas to run past you....
Yes regular DFS wouldn't help and the Namespace would still be different than how it was with just the old server. However I was thinking DFS Replication could replace the purpose of RoboCopy and it would keep the two locations "in sync" until I was ready
to flip over to the new server.  DFS Rep can exist independently of a DFS Namespace, so a Namespace is not even needed. It needs a minimum of 2003R2 for the "later & better" DFS Rep but I believe 2003 can do an "in place" upgrade to 2003R2, so I would upgrade
the old server to 2003R2 first.  As long as the DFS Rep on 2012R2 and 2003R2 will properly interact I think that will work.
Thanks for the reg info on the Shares.  I'm debating if editing that would reg file would really be much better than manually creating the Shares on the new server while the DFS Replication was doing its job.  I'll probably export that Key as a
safety move whether I use it or not.
Once the DFS Rep is fully in sync and the Shares are in place on the new server, I figure I would then:
    1. Remove the DFS Replication Object (optionally remove DFS Services completely)
    2. Rename the old File Server to something else and set it to DHCP
    3. Rename the new File Server to the name I want to use and give it the IP the old server had.
    How does that sound?

  • Unable to download from AppStore, updates, etc.Messages 'the installer is damaged' to 'there might be a problem with file ownership and permissions.' I am the owner and only user of a new MBP. What could be going on?

Is anyone having the same type of problems I'm having with Lion. I have a new MacBook Pro, received 7 weeks ago, preinstalled with Leopard 10.6.7. I didn't migrate anything from my old iMac, wanted a clean install from the Apple Store. While there, I asked for the upgrade to Lion 10.7, however their system was down.
I  installed it myself, wirelessly about a week later, and Apple emailed me a receipt. Now, I've had to call support directly last week when I lost Mail, Address Book, was unable to open Preview or iTunes, among other problems. Seemed fixed after a session that baffled even the store tech.  Now I am unable to download or install the recent Mac updates for Lion, from the App Store, could not install Adobe Reader, etc. Messages range from 'A network error has occured - Check your Internet connection and try again' to 'The Installer is damaged and cannot open the package. There may be a problem with file ownership or permissions.'  All fail and I'll probably have to call Apple again. I am frustrated beyond words.  Logs 'Install's runner tool is not properly configured as a setuid tool', domain errors, 'attempt to write a readonly database, and on and on. I have barely done a thing on this computer except search online for help with these problems. Safari gives me a 'You are not connected to the internet' too often. Diagnostics disagrees. I do see wi-fi problems in the forum. Disk and permissions were fine at the beginning of the earlier problems, checked first by support tech. I'm not sure if support tech even knew. I was just happy they were fixed. Anyone have these download and/or install problems after a 'clean bill of health' so to speak, only a week ago?

Let's try the following user tip with that one:

  • Implementing a file server and backup solution

Hi there - Looking for sage advice from the experts! Here's my dilemma:
I have a 1st gen Intel iMac, and I recently picked up the 13-inch aluminum MacBook. Both have 250 Gb drives. I have a fair amount of media and software using all but 9 gigs of space on the iMac. One more Final Cut project should eat the majority of that:-)
Before I start moving media over to the MacBook and run into the same space issues, I'd like to come up with a storage and back up solution that does the following:
    1. Provides one centralized location for all media (music, photos, video files)
    2. Keep back ups of centralized location AND backups of both iMac and MacBook--I don't want to lose any work in progress.
I'd love to hear how others manage this problem. Can a Time Machine solve the problem? Am I looking at a RAID solution?
    Thanks for your help!!

In a case where the same workbook is saved locally and on the application server and this error happens, what is the decisive factor? Meaning why does this happen for some workbooks and not for others? Is it a question of size, number of queries, other?
Do embedded excel functionalities and update links also interfere?

  • File Server and Port 21

    Hi Guys and Girls
Just a quick question here. To be able to use the File Server functionality do I have to open up port 21 in the main router? I was previously looking at NAS devices which require port 21 to be opened but my Dad wasn't too keen on opening the port on his router.  I've watched a few setup videos and they don't mention anything about port 21. I just want to double check before I spend $400+.
Any input would be greatly appreciated

    Pros
    • Freshened interface
    • USB 3.0 for expanded storage
    • Easy remote access without port forwarding
    • 3 licenses for Smartware Pro backup software
    • Apple Time Machine backup
    • NAS snapshot backups
    Not according to smallnetbuilder.
    Says explicitly without port forwarding..
    Hmmm Interesting...
You do need upnp of course.. but upnp is available on all routers nowadays.. (except apple ones of course).
Does this involve messing with the router in anyway?
If you are accessing it 90% of the time from LAN.. then you need faster access than TC USB drive. And really faster access than WD MyCloud then you need a real NAS.
I have actually just shared my 2TB WD USB 2.0 drive on my network and connected my Windows Laptop to it via IP and the speeds are 100% fine. Absolutely no lag. It's running like a native drive.

  • High availability for file server and exchange with 2 physical servers

    Dear Experts,
I have 2 physical server with local disks only. I want to setup below on same with high availability, please advise best prossible options. We will be using windows 2012 R2 Server..
    1. Domain controller
    2. Exchange 2013
As of now I am thinking of setting up below:
    1. Install Hyper-v on both and create 3 VM on each as
-On Host A- 1 VM for DC, 1 VM for File server with DFS namespace and replication for file server HA and 1 VM for Exchange 2013 with CAS/MBX with DAG and DNS RR for Exchange HA
-On Host B - 1 VM for ADC, 1 VM for File server DFS member for above and 1 VM for Exchange 2013 CAS/MBX with DAG member
I have read on internet about new features called scale out file server (SoFS) in Windows 2012 Server but not sure that will be preferred for file sharing.

    Best regards,
DFS is by far the best way to implement any sort of file server. Because a) failover is not fully transparent and does not happen always (say not on copy ) b) DFS cannot replicate open files so if you edit a big file and have node rebooted you're going to
lose ALL transactions/updates you've applied c) actually slows down the config. See:
    DFS for failover

    DFS Performance
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/08/22/windows-server-dfs-namespaces-performance-and-scalability.aspx
SoFS a) requires shared storage to run and you don't have one b) does not support generic workloads
(only Hyper-V and SQL Server) and c) technically makes sense to expand SAS JBOD or existing FC SAN to numerous Hyper-V clients over 10 GbE w/o need to invest money into SAS switches and HBAs and FC HBAs and new licenses FC ports. Making long story short:
    SoFS is NOT YOUR CASE.

For now you need to find some shared storage to be a back end for your hypevisor config (SAS JBOD from supported list, virtual SAN from multiple vendors like for example StarWind see below, make sure you review ALL the vendors) and then you create a failover
SMB 3.0 share for your file server workload. See:

You can do what you want to do just fine. Hyper-V / Windows Server 2012 R2 can use SMB 3.0 share instead of a block storage (iSCSI/FC/etc). See:
    Deploy Hyper-V over SMB
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134187.aspx
There would be no shared disk and no CSV just SMB 3.0 folder both hypervisor hosts would have access to. Much simplier to use. See:
Hyper-V recommends SMB or CSV ?
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/d6e06d59-bef3-42ba-82f1-5043713b5552/hyperv-recommends-smb-or-csv-
You'll have however a limited solution as your single physical server being a file server would be a single point of failure.
You can use Storage Spaces just fine but you cannot use Clustered Storage Spaces as in this case you'll have to take away your SAS spindles from your R720 box and mount them into SAS JBOD (make sure it's certified). So you get rid of an active components
(CPU, RAM) and keep more robust all-passive SAS JBOD as your physical shared storage. Better then a single Windows-running server but for a true fault tolerance you'll have to have 3 SAS JBODs. Not exactly cheap :) See:

Alternative way would be using Virtual SAN similar to VMware VSAN in this case you can get rid of a physical shared storage @ all and use cheap high capacity SATA spindles (and SATA SSDs!) instead of an expensive SAS.

  • Files locks and permissions

    Hi,
I've just started a new job and taken over a Mac Pro. I've been given a new login as an admin but i've got problems saving files etc. everytime i come to a folder i haven't touched i only have read permissions so i can't re-save files, or save new ones in these folders. So at the moment i'm having to keep going to 'get info' clicking the lock at the bottom, entering the password. and allowing admin to Read and Write so that i can save files.
To be more specific it says this in the 'sharing and permissions':
Edit 1 (not me) - Read and Write
admin (is me including) - read only
    everyone - Ready only
I'm getting slightly annoyed with this, is there someway to give me full read and write access straight away or am i going to be click the blooming lock icon forever?
    Thanks
    Mark

First move any important data/files from the old user's home folder to /Users/Shared. Then make a new user account for yourself in System Preferences -> Accounts. You will have to get your system administrator to do this for you if you don't know the admin password. Log in and use the new, fresh account. You will have read-only access to the files in /Users/Shared. Do a Command-D on the files to make new copies of them, with correct permissions so you can edit them.
Reinstalling everything is still important; make sure you do it at the earliest opportunity.

  • AD Credentials, File Sharing and Permissions

I've created a sharepoint on an Xserve G5 running Mac OS X Server 10.4.5. This sharepoint is to be shared to both Mac and Windows clients using Samba. A local group was created that is comprised mostly of Active Directory users. This local group was given Read&Write access for the share. The users in this group can all mount the share. However, whenever the group users try to delete existing files, or add files to the share they receive an error stating:
"The operation cannot be completed becaue you do not have sufficient priveleges for some of the items."
I've verified that the correct users are in the group, that the group has Read&Write access, and that the users can mount the share. I just can't figure out where the permissions would be wrong to give that error. Everything looks right, to me.
    Help?

I've seen this error message before; these links may be of interest, even though they don't solve your problem:
A similar posting to which I've replied: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=409444&tstart=0
My original observation of this problem in Mac OS X 10.4.2: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=647624
Your situation may be similar; however, I would also check to be sure that the "ignore permissions/ignore ownership" box is un-checked in the Info window of the volume that houses the share point. Occasionally, I've seen situations in which that has caused the failed copy error.

  • File Sharing and Permissions ANNOYING!!!

I'm trying to share files between my macpro and macbook pro, both running 10.5.2. The files appear to share fine between the 2. I throw a file into the public folder and it pops up on my other mac, even opens fine. But when I go to save it, it says I don't have sufficient privilages. It seems that by default any file that is shared is the property of the sending mac and automatically denies me write privilages on any files I send between my macs. The only way to fix this is copy the files once they reach their destination mac, which is annoying when you're dealing with large files and whole directories full of large files.
What I want to be able to do is copy a file or folder from, lets say, my macbook pro to my macpro and automatically have full privilages on it, without the need to re-copy it. I even set up a folder outside of the public folder and set that up as a shared folder. That didn't work. When I connect between my macs I do it via direct ethernet and I don't use the guest account.
I'm a digital graphics artist, so this is **** trying to keep my assets available and up to date on both my machines.
Oh, and I can't use target disk mode unfortunately (has to do with license servers, floating licenses and lengthy 3d renders).
thanks for any help on this,
    kvb

The easiest way is to authenticate as a valid user on each box.
    For your MacBook Pro
Click on "Connect as..." on the MacPro icon and enter the username and Password of a valid user on the MacPro.
    For your MacPro
Click on "Connect as..." on the MacBookPro icon and enter the username and Password of a valid user on the MacBookPro.
That should work, with full access.

  • Mac mini as file server and Mediacenter

I have bought a Mac mini with Lion and want to use it as a fileserver and a mediacenter. After formatting my external disks and putting the data back on I have now been able to share them on my network (mix of Mac and PC). My problem is the Mac mini will freeze up quite often and and therefore I cannot get access to my files from the other computers in my network and it will stall every no and then when watching a DVD.
Is there a power saving option I have overlooked? When it goes into standby mode I cannot always wake it up again but have to make a hard reset.
I am using XBMC as mediacenter software. I also have IDrive running as online backup and Evocam as videosurveillance software.

You say disks.  How many and what brand and how is the connection
    made (USB/Firerwire)?

Can you post your settings that you currently have?

Can you disable IDrive and the Evocam software for a while

as I use it on multiple Macs without a problem.

  • Accessing files stored in Common Server and share drive with  SAP DMS

    Hi DMS Gurus,
We have a requirement, apart from retreving the data from content server storage, the client also wants the documents stored in common file server and Share drive also to be accessed through DMS,
    1) one option for this may be upload all the documents in the existing servers to DMS Content servers to get the full funtionality of DMS i'm i right? please suggest.
here again they have lacs of document so this may not be a ideal solution, now 2nd option is
    2) create a data carrier and Mount points with the existing server if i'm right, but by just doing this what funtionalities will this provide
i have a preassumption that this existing common server can be used as a storage area for DMS (as vault or common server), but only those documents which are stored in to this common server or shared folder through DMS can be retrived by DMS., again i'm i right?
but how can we access all the lacs of file which are already existing there for years.
how can we see all the documents in SAP DMS which are stored earlier in this common server before DMS,
is migrating all the necessary preexisting documents to SAP DMS the only Solution for this.
any solution for this please suggest.
Points sure for any clarification given

    hi Priya
This is an old thread but nevertheless would like to give some inputs.
your point .. common file server and Share drive also to be accessed through DMS,
    1) one option for this may be upload all the documents in the existing servers to DMS Content servers to get the full funtionality of DMS.
<The option 1 is an ideal option as in future u would one day need to migarate the documents if u intend to use SAP DMS as the DMS system in ur org>
Alternatively if the documents would still need to be retained in the file server but also would need to associate to SAP business objects u could use the Define data carrier external DMS.
This again depend on what kind of documents are stored in the file server & are they relevant to be associated to SAP objects/ Transactions.
The point here is u still want to use SAP DMS to view the file , all though there are other option as Archive link, Service for objects etc. Using SAP DMS option will still call for creating DIR in SAP & assigning the file path hyper link using LSMW /upload prog.
So as for a temp sol till u clean up the file server u can use the hyperlink and later migrate to Content server.

  • "empty file" error with CS5, linux server and mavericks

    hello to the community,
i'm the owner of a small online marketing agency.
we have been using different macs here since 10.6. until mavericks with adobe CS 5 and a linux server for years.
today i got a new MBP retina with mavericks and since now i have the following problem:
    - when i try to open a photoshop file on the server i get a "file is empty" error, when i open an illustrator file on the server illustrator crashes und when i open a pdf on the server with acrobat pro there comes a message that the file is corrupt. with acrobat reader i can open it.
    - i can open the exact files with all apps when they are on a local storage not an the server
    - i can open all files on the server with another mac with os x 10.6.
so there must be a problem with the combination cs5-files, server and os 10.9. it's weird because with my old MBP i with also using mavericks and there was no problem.
can anyone help me? it's really a problem!

i found a workaround that seems to work!
instead of connecting to the server with "smb" i connect with "cifs". so i force mavericks to connect using the old smb 1 instead of the buggy smb 2.

  • Migrate User Profile Disks to new File Server

I'm looking for some guidance/best practice/advice on moving my user profile disk share. My goal is simple enough, we have a share with UPDs on a stand-alone file server. I'm in the process of configuring a scale-out file server and would like to migrate
my UPD share to that cluster once it is running smoothly. I'm running a 2012 R2 RDS farm. Is the process as simple as changing the UNC path in Server Manager and migrating the data? If so, should I copy the data then change the UNC path or the other way around?
On a related note, is there any problems of hosting the UPD share on DFS? I'm not necessarily looking to replicate the share, but it would ease a similar migration in the future if necessary as I could replicate it or use the DFS migration toolkit without
needing to alter the UNC path in the farm as the client facing path wouldn't change. Just an idea I'm toying with and would love some feedback.

I would think in a simple/flat scenario, you change the UNC path and the wizard will automatically setup the share on the target folder with the correct root permissions
then you can do a robocopy.exe /mir to move the individual UPDs over while retaining their unique permissions for each user
regarding scale out file server, you actually can't use SoFS for just a general file share workload and SoFS + DFS combination also has limited capabilities
for now, SoFS is only compatible with clustered Hyper-V, IIS, VMM and SQL workloads
you can use the old fashion clustered file server role with SMB 3.0 for the UPDs however, as 2012 now allows for proper clustered share aliases that allows you to natively use a virtual name under a clustered file share option which works nicely in your
    case
setting up DFS with the above scenario seems to be supported although I haven't done it before

  • Mac mini w/Lion Server as a file server on a windows network

I would like to run a mac mini server on a windows network as a file server and a office wiki server (no internet)
Do I need a router or a switch?  Does the mini support client data backups?  Are the users & permissions setting robust and easy to use?
SMB is the protocol?  It is my understanding that this is easy with xp but more difficult with windows 7, has this been resolved?
    thanks

Anything the AppleTv can play-the mini can.
Playlists from the iTunes store videos can be done on AppleTV, but not
on the Mac Mini. There are third party solutions, but they are hardly easy to setup. I'm working on a setup right now where it is quite a bit more complicated on the Mac Mini:
