Can you clarify what you are trying to achieve as the underlined is contradictory. Assuming you mean that you can't see an ftp server on your home machine via the internet away from home then you need to check a few things. Is your ftp server set to passive or active mode? Have you forwarded port21 to the appropriate machine (passive) or ports 21 and >1023 (active)? Are you using a dynamic DNS service such as DynDNS as your IP adddress will be dynamic? Have you opted out of CG-NAT?  http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/44044/~/ip-address-translation%2Fsharing
Yes, you can use any third party router you wish. It will need to be a VDSL modem/router if on Infinity.

  • How do I transfer files via Filezilla ftp behind a linksys router?

I have allowed access for my ftp client though my firewall, but I cannot figure out how to allow access for the Filezilla ftp client. Your help is appreciated.

Make sure it works from modem directly. To forward ports manually, open setup page of router using http:// 192.168.1.1 in the address bar by giving password admin keeping username blank.Go to Application & Gamings tab & forward ports for assigned static ip of your computer on which you want to access the filezilla ftp.

    Thanks for posting here.
I would like to know how you're trying to change File permissions. Is that by using FileZilla or something?

  • Which is better for newbies?

Which is better for newbies, Jgrasp or Netbeans? I need something that explains errors more thoroughly than Jgrasp.

Here's my code with 3 errors. Now bear in mind that my program has compiled completely and ran correctly up to this method. All I'm trying to do with this method is get the average of all grades in a multi-array. I researched and found some code that was similar to what I needed to do but it's not working out yet. All other methods in my program work perfectly but I can't get this one to compile.
    public double getMean(int allGrades[][])
              int total = 0;

  • Best FTP for iWeb produced websites after Mobile Me?

best FTP for iWeb produced websites after Mobile Me?

If you're asking about an FTP client there are several very good FTP clients.  YummyFTP and Transmit are two commercial clients that provide two finder like windows of your local website folder and the online site folder.  That makes it very easy to drag and drop or do automatic syncs.
Cyberduck is a free FTP client and provides a Finder like window to the online folder.  You can open the local Finder window for the web site for dropping and dragging. It will also do an automatic sync.
As for hosting sites IMO the two best are HostExcellence.com and ixwebhosting.  They are owned by the same company and operate essentially the same.  The only difference is that HostExcellence has a free customer support phone line for customers outside the US. Both offer excellent ear to ear customer support.

  • Use Active FTP for signature updates

Is it possible to use active ftp opposed to passive when upgrading IDS signatures? I am running 4210s with v.4.1. During signature updates for some reason the FTP connection uses a random ephemeral port instead of port 21. When I ftp manaually from the service account with the PASS command to turn off passive ftp, the file transfers fine. ACLs are blocking the connection because the port always changes and I don't want to open up the ephemeral port range.
    Thanks,
    Joel

As far as I know, you can only use the passive ftp for the sig updates.

  • CONFIGRE  FTP  FOR  RHEL  AS  4.0

    Hai,
how to configure ftp for linux server.

Can you elaborate on what you are trying to ask here?
FTP is the name of a protocol, which consists of a server part and a client part. It's probably safe to assume you want to setup a ftp daemon/server, but it also could be you are trying to configure ftp to be usable as client.
Let's assume you mean setting up ftp as a daemon:
On rhel4, there is no ftp server installed by default. To install a ftp server, install the vsftpd package. After installation, the daemon can be enabled using the following command (as root):
    service vsftpd on
To enable the daemon in runlevels 2,3,4,5 on startup automatically (as root):
    chkconfig --level 2345 on
(please mind it's not setup as a server with anonymous ftp enabled)

  • HELP ME GUYS WITH CREDIT ADVICE FOR NEWBIE

Thanks for reading!  I just want to ask you guys, I'm looking to help my girlfriend open her first credit card.  I have plenty with all of the creditors and I began with Capital One.  I believe at that time I had my student loan reporting though.  She has nothing on her report aside from a few inquiries (AT&T and a few store card HPs).  She said some of her friends have been approved for a low CL Discover It card.  I don't know if there is a Discover It offering for newbies or if they must just have something on their report.  I recommended she get a Cap1 card.  That way she can have her son on the card image and I know that since I've heard they triple pull they're pretty leanient.  What do you guys think?  Any advice on what secured card she should get should it come to that?  Thanks very much again!

    HappyCamper123 wrote:
Do NOT cosign for your girlfriend. If you break up, your finances could get messy.
Have her apply for an It card, they love clean, thin files. If that fails, go for a secured Boa card or Cap One credit steps. Maybe make her an AU on an Amex of yours to build history (you can artificially set a limit to limit your liability).Amex is the one I called first about AU and then Citi.  I almost did it with Citi because surprisingly the rep for Amex wasn't very helpful.  Should I (she) even be concerned with inquiries when she literally has no score anyway?  Do they really impact a score that doesn't exist or do they hurt a score once one becomes available.  The whole thing is I was just concerned that we'd apply for stuff and she woulnd't get approved and that she'd have another senseless inquiry.  As I said, she already has several.

  • Online systems configured for newbies to experiment

Why does SDN not have online systems configured for newbies to experiment online.
Will this pose too much of an administrative task? with the skills available in this forum it should not be a problem.
or is it a question of making profit through the training academies which are not affordable to individuals not backed by their companies to learn on the technology?

An interesting thought, however with so many users we would need a server farm of test systems to handle it.  And with users wanting to try so many different things it would be rather difficult to maintain the servers and have some sort of schedule for maintenance, resets, etc.

  • TFTP or FTP for backup

Is there any advantage between the two?

Rick is quite correct about the inherent FTP efficiencies compared to TFTP. However, the one he mentions about "in flight", usually isn't very noticable on LANs due to the minimal latency, unlike a LFN. In fact, once the sender has expanded it's send window to match the receiver's receive window, TCP (e.g. FTP) also "self clocks" on ACKs (NB: also the major reason TCP's performance can be much slower than expected on LFNs.)
Since FTP uses TCP, there are other advantages over TCP, but many of these deal with possible sequencing or lost packet issues that often are very useful across WANs, not so much over "typical" LANs.
You didn't describe what was to be backed up. If you have something like small device config files in mind, across the LAN you probably wouldn't see much performance difference between TFTP or FTP, unless saving some milliseconds was important to you. If you wanted to backup something much larger, e.g. IOS images, here I would lean toward FTP (for reasons such as Rick's or other TCP improvements), but on a LAN, if you were reading/writing to flash, flash I/O would likely be the bottleneck and you might still not see any major transfer performance difference.
Another major difference between the two, TFTP servers are much simpler to implement, primary reason, I believe, for "trivial" in the protocol name.
    [edit]
BTW, another valid issue Rick raises is different block size supported between FTP and TFTP, but TFTP's 512 octet limitation is addressed by later TFTP RFCs, although being an option, I wouldn't presume both sides would support it. Although TFTP that supports > 32 MBs, i.e. TFTP Option Extension, might. (In other words, TFTP that doesn't support > 32 MBs, I believe, can't support > 512 octet blocks.)

  • Tomcat Wiki: very important for newbies

    Hi everyone!
I have a very important suggestion (important for newbies or ... me) for the tomcat wiki. To work with tomcat without problems you must have permissions on the configuration files. So i think the wiki must have something related to permissions and groups like
    gpasswd -a <user> tomcat.
All the configuration files bundled with the tomcat package doesn't have the permissions for any user to read its content. The only easy way to have access to this files is adding your user to the tomcat group.
    I hope this helps.
    See ya!
PD: sorry if you notice my poor english.

Would that fix this mod_jk problem? Do you mean to say that I have those permissions when I actually edit those files?
I think the wiki is also mistaken assuming that JAVA_HOME is in the /opt directory.

  • Cannot configure wrt54gs v6 router for use with filezilla FTP client

I am new to working with FTP and very rusty on networking in general.  I just downloaded filezilla to create a FTP client on my desktop.  When I run their wizard, it says the connection is tainted by my router.  All the forums for filezilla say I need to configure my router to allow traffic on either port 21 (ftp) or a range of ports ( they suggest 50000 to 50100).
Please let me know what I need to do to make this work
    thanks in advance
    ldygunner

To answer your other questions, the tutorials have it all wrong. What they really need to explain, but fail to do so, is that the only situation where a FTP client would need to use active mode (the PORT command) is where the FTP server can't accept inbound connections on arbitrary port numbers. But that's a pathological case anyway: the FTP server can always accept connections on some well defined set of port numbers, to keep its own local firewall or NAT router happy. Consequently, there is really no need at all for a FTP client system to open up any ports to support active mode, rather than always operate in passive mode (as browsers do.)
The fact of the matter is that if passive mode works in a browser for you, it will work for Filezilla also.
And the configuration tests it runs are brain damaged. Even though the wizard recommends passive mode, it never tests for it. And it doesn't really test active mode either. What it really tests is whether anything between the client and the server is "transparently" translating IP addresses and port numbers. Such a test is broken, because the mere fact of port numbers being rewritten in TCP packets is irrelevant to whether PORT (active mode) will succeed or fail.
For completeness, in case someone decides to get pedantic, there is a case where a FTP client system would need the active mode PORT command to work, but that case is now of historical interest only. It's a scenario that FTP servers no longer support, for security reasons. (What is it? When the FTP client is operating as a controller to remotely transfer files between two servers: it tells one server to use passive mode, and sends the address/port it gets to the other server in active mode, which in theory would make the second server open a connection to the first. This, in fact, is why two modes, active and passive, were originally defined in the FTP standard!)  And it still wouldn't need open ports on the client system.

  • FTP question for newbie -- How to access external volume?

I have set up an old Mac (running Tiger) as a server on my LAN; attached to this Mac are several Firewire disks. I want to use FTP (with retrospect Express) to automatically back up from another computer to these disks.
I can successfuly mount these Firewire disks using AFP on the other computer. But when I use FTP, I seem only to access the user account I use to log in. How do I get FTP to go those Firewire disks to transfer the backup files?
Please forgive me if this is a naive question... Thanks in advance for any advice!

To configure the FTP server in Tiger requires creating and editing certain files using the terminal application. So if you have no prior UNIX or command line experience you may find this tricky and you would need to read the man file for ftpd.
So I would suggest you try out PureFTP manager which is a front end application for an alternative FTP server.
I have used this Application and found it quite straightforward to use.
