I would like to install google toolbar, but cannot with firefox 5.
How can I install firefox 4 so I can then install google toolbar?

Firefox 4 is not secure; Firefox 5 is a security and stability update for Firefox 4. The only currently supported versions of Firefox are Firefox 5 and Firefox 3.6.19 (support to expire in a month or two).
As for the Google toolbar....
Google decided that they will no longer produce the Google Toolbar for Firefox beyond Firefox 4.

If you did not make a backup of the old version of the app before you deleted it, there's no way you can get it back now. The current version should still work on your iPhone 3GS, though. You just need iOS 4.3 or later, so if your iPhone still has an older version, update to the latest iOS.
If, however, you really have an iPhone 3G, not a 3GS, then unless again you make a backup copy of the old version of the app, there's nothing you can do until you're ready to get a newer iPhone since iOS 4.2.1 is the final version your iPhone 3G will run.

Firefox will not easily allow you to downgrade to firefox4, because that is now unsupported, however if you install an additional add-on the compatability reporter this will allow the google toolbar to work. Extensions for Firefox, such as the Google Toolbar, include a list of compatible Firefox versions. Currently, the Google Toolbar only goes up to Firefox 4. However, people have tested and it actually works on Firefox 5, so there are two workarounds:
(1) Edit a file to revise the range of compatible versions
(2) Install an add-on that lets you ignore the range of compatible versions

I'm surprised you get no message when you attempt opening the Excel document in Numbers.
I'm assuming Numbers 3.1, since you are running Mavericks.
Does the Numbers file that opens show any content?
Does it contain a table?
How large?
Does it contain more than one tab (indicating more than one sheet)?
Do those other tabs contain a table?
Have you checked those tables for data content?
There have been cases in the past of imported documents opening with white text on a white background, giving the appearance of containing nothing. Check for this by selecting a block of cells, then applying a Fill colour or a Text colour using the Format button (paintbrush).
I'd also suggest attempting to open the Excel files using LibreOffice, which can be downloaded from the linked website.
