Fireworks vs. ImageReady

Need a little help in transitioning from ImageReady to Fireworks.
In ImageReady I would have a PSD image from PS CS2 with all my states preset via multiple layers with effects.  Three layers (normal, over, down) each with its own effects.  I would pop over into ImageReady and generate my rollover states and then export it as an html page.  Then load it into my design in GoLive.
In Fireworks (yuk!) I have a PSD file created in PS CS4 done the same way as before.  And boy was it fun figuring out the differences for assigning states to a layer. <grin>  I export the html file and all I get is a small file with no rollover states other than the raw "normal" image.  Even then it took a while to figure out to export a png file instead of a gif file.
And I thought it especially nice, having spent my hard earned dollars for Creative Suite 4, to read in the Fireworks CS4 generated html button file that it is actually Fireworks CS3 with a "purty" picture and a FW CS4 splash screen.  When will Adobe ever learn.  Probably after the bigwigs screw their employees and us into the bargain!  ImageReady is a more intuitive program and worked better.  But then of course Dreamweaver does not accept a html file created in ImageReady.
And don't buy their Fireworks CS4 Classroom in a Book.  Of course it did not go into creating a button ported over from Photoshop.  That made real sense.  About as much sense as their online training for creating buttons with rollover states.  Morons!
In the Windows version of FW CS4 what ever happened to the good 'ol tried and true "ctrl+F4" to close a file?  Any program I've used over the years "ctrl+W" was generally used to write a file to disk!  So much for integration across the suite.  And did I forget to mention that you can no longer pop directly over into the web graphics program from Photoshop.  In PS CS2 it was right there in the File menu.  Again, Morons!
So in closing — how do I create a three state button and export it as a html file from Fireworks CS4 using png files?
Thank you in advance for the assistance.

Morning Lorraine & Jim,
You are both correct in most regards.  The one overriding concern, and this is the way I have done it for years, is to preserve the editability.  Jim mentioned this in his opening paragraph:
Fireworks does not support adjustment layers. However, if you do not need to return to Photoshop with the design, you can import the file and flatten the adjustment layers, thus maintaining the "appearance" of the adjustment, but not the editability.
Preserving editability is why I design my buttons in Photoshop and create the Internet images and code in ImageReady.  As Jim indicated the Photoshop Live Filters in Fireworks are not robust.  I should quantify this and say they suck!  There implemention is a subset of the blur, noise, adjust color, other and sharpen tools of Photoshop.  For that matter there are freeware programs out there that do these functions better.  I chose not to use them.
Meanwhile what I have been referring to is Photoshop's Layer Styles which is something totally different.  And, as Jim was kind enough to indicate, is far superior to Fireworks' Filters options.
Things have gotten a lot more complicated for those accustomed to having used ImageReady for all these years.  What in ImageReady was created with a couple of clicks and an Optimize command has been replaced with a hidden plethora of obscure commands.  This is obviously a moot point if you wish to be limited by using the "symbols" and styles in Fireworks.  If you still desire to use the editability of creating a PSD or TIF in Photoshop and then creating your rollovers in Fireworks you need to learn these commands.
However, if you are satisfied with the results, and I call them glaring for want of a better term, then go ahead and forget Photoshop.  Create your buttons and rollover effects in Fireworks.  I detest the term "symbol" in Fireworks as it clashes with the usage of symbol in Photoshop.
Following are the steps needed in Fireworks for creating a button ported over from Photoshop.
Create your button in PS and assign the Layer Style for your appearance.  Name this layer normal.
For ease of use name each subsequent layer over, down, etc.  Create a Layer Style for each different from the preceeding one.
Save the file with some illustrative name, i.e. infobutton.psd.
Open this file in Fireworks Duplicate the State as many times as needed naming each state the same as your layers.
Select each state and turn on or off visibility of the same named layer.  Turn off the layers not needed.
In the Layers panel click on the "Slice" layer and add a slice to the Web Layer.
Add a Behavior to it. Use the Swap Image and select your "over / State 2" state.  Make sure that the Preload Images and Restore image onMouseOut are selected.  Check that the behavior has defaulted to onMouseOver.
Create another Swap Image behavior deselecting the onMouseOut radio button.  Change the Events drop down to onClick.
Follow the procedures for Export in the html page. (Unfortunately this does not make a html file usable by Dreamweaver in all cases—additional steps are needed.)
Make darn sure that in the Export | Options | HTML style dropdown window that you have Dreamweaver HTML / XHTML selected.  For some unknown mysterious reason Dreamweaver will not accept a Fireworks generated html / xhtml file if that file is saved as a generic html / xhtml file.  This demonstrates the not too nice interaction of Dreamweaver and Fireworks.  Dreamweaver should read any html file.  You really need to see this in operation to understand the ramifications.
As I said there is some integration between the two programs.  Not much, but enough that they are at least image editing programs of differing behavior and interoperability.  The inconsistencies can be tolerated with workarounds, I hate that term, and some forethought.  The days of ImageReady are long gone if you want to use Dreamweaver as your HTML coding program.  To use Fireworks in the same fashion as you once did with a Photoshop and ImageReady workflow entails additional at times confusing steps.
If however your desire is to create all of your graphical site develpment in Fireworks it is indeed a powerful program if a bit obtuse from other similar programs.  Fireworks is trying to do too many things similar to Photoshop, i.e. with it's Filters selectors, that are drastically toned down subsets of the originals.
Why would I have slices in Photoshop if they are not recognized natively in Fireworks?  Photoshop automatically has a Slice 1 for each and every file with the ability to add additional slices as needed.  This Slice 1 not recognized in Fireworks.  Create an additional slice (Slice 2) in Photoshop and save the file.  Open the psd file in Fireworks and only the second slice is recognized.  This easily demonstrates inconsistencies between the two programs.
Lorraine was kind enough to offer her assistance.  As she indicated there are "some" options.  However they do not include the creation of PNG files. as shown in her screen capture.  That being said she has two additional options that do not appear in my FW CS4.  I am referring to the RL-image and RL-thumb selectors.  It is likely something I missed.
Yes, she was very accurate in stating that Fireworks defaults to saving the image files generated along with the associative html file.  Whatever the prior image format was is what all succeeding ones will be.  A caveat however is that in the File | Export Image | Options | Document Setup the example file naming still shows the GIF image format as what the images will saved as.  Another, in my honest opinion, inconsistency.
I hope this may be helpful to others migrating from ImageReady to Fireworks and appreciate the assistance of all those who have participated.  It has been an interesting learning concern that should not have been required.  Perhaps a tutorial demonstrating just how to port over a PSD button file created in Photoshop to Fireworks would have answered all my questions.  At least for those of us more accustomed to ImageReady who have now migrated by force to Fireworks.
Respectfully submitted.

  • Duplicate web layer

    Hi all,
I've been searching and can't find the answer to this. I have
tried to move on to Fireworks from Imageready now I have no choice,
but I am having trouble finding the same features that imageready
    offered... Could anyone tell me:
    1. How do I duplicate a sub-layer in the Web Layer? I have a
set of buttons with rollover states. In Imageready I could create
one set with the OFF state, then duplicate that and it would keep
all the slice names the same. Then I could just change the OFF bit
to ON at the end of each title. Does anyone know a good way of
    doing this in Fireworks?
    2. If I duplicate a slice, can I keep the filename the same?
    Thanks for your help.

But they will. The frames are where the stacks are located,
    not the web
layer. The web layer rides on top of everything.
Here's a description that might help to get your head around
    the concept
of the way frames work in Fireworks.
Frames are like the cells of an animation, but instead of
    being in a
strip, as they are in a film, they are stacked on top of each
    other, as
they are in a flip book. On each frame you can have many
    layers--the
background layer, a tree image layer, a house image layer.
    Unless you
instruct Fireworks to share these layers across the frames,
    each frame
will have its own discrete set of layers.
When you draw a slice over frame one, the slice creates a
    cutting guide
that affects all the material on the frames below frame 1 as
    well. Let's
say you have 6 frames. Naming the slice on frame 1
    automatically names
all the images stacked under it in frames 2 through 6 as
    well. Each
frame will be exported as a separate image, named
    sequentially, as
    myimage, myimage_f2, myimage_f3, etc.

  • Zoom resizes window

I have been using Imageready for years, and now trying to

be here a lot to ask questions...
My first one is: Is there an option to automatically resize
the window if you zoom in or out with Ctrl-+/-
In Photoshop you can set it in the preferences: General

On PC's, document windows don't resize in any program unless

I'm not sure what you mean by images behind it. If you mean

  • Associate PNG with Fireworks instead of ImageReady?

No matter what I do in Windows XP's "File Options" dialog I
cannot cause PNG files to be associated with Fireworks. Fireworks
does not show up in the list of programs that can open *.PNG. If I
manually browse and point to Fireworks.exe as the program to open
PNG then PNG is associated with ImageReady (I have PhotoShop too).
This is very frustrating - I prefer to open files via Windows
Explorer rather than within applications. Thanks for tips you can
    share.

    Mark,
In Folder Options, instead of using the 'Change' button, use
    the
'Advanced' button. There you can change the Edit, Open and
    Preview
options. Browsing to Fireworks.exe from there should work.

  • Converting Photoshop/Imageready CS2  files to FIreworks CS$

I recently upgraded from CS2 to CS4 (Windows). I understand
that ImageReady had been dropped in CS3. I have a web site that was
designed using Photoshop/ImageReady (CS2). It has plenty of
rollovers. When rolling over text, the text is underlined. In
ImageReady I created the rollovers by turning the layers on and
off. When the slices were exported, all them (the on/off rollover
graphics) were all exported at the same time. It doesn't seem like
I can create rollovers like that in Fireworks. Does anyone have a
solution? It seems you have to have a separate graphic to swap out.
In Imageready, I copied the layer of text, underlined it, then when
I created the rollovers using the web tools, I turned the layers on
and off. There were no external graphics to insert or to copy and
paste. I know you can create that rollover effect in Dreamweaver
using css but this site has strict guidlines and I don't think I am
allowed to do it that way. Any info on this matter is appreciated.
    thanks,
    LT

Thank you for your response and for the link, which by the
way, I already have a copy of that file. What I am trying to do is
to utilize what I have already done in Photoshop/ImageReady. My
files open fine in Fireworks, everything is there---all the layers,
etc. except for the rollovers. The information that you provided
tells you how to create rollovers using buttons or graphics. I am
not using buttons. I am using plain text. When you roll over the
text it becomes underlined. In ImageReady the way I did it was by
using layers. I created the rollovers using the available web tools
for that and I turned the layers on (for the underlined effect) and
off for the regular effect. I sliced the text and the background
that it is on. When the slices were exported all the graphics for
my rollovers were created. I did not have to create two separate
graphics. ImageReady did that for me. Here is the link of the web
site. https://www.nfc.usda.gov. so you can see an example of what I
am talking about. The top navigation and left and right menus are
done using ImageReady tools. This whole page is layed out in
Photoshop, then sliced in ImageReady and the graphics exported
(with the rollovers created). Each rollover is a slice. I hope I
didn't make this sound too confusing. :)
    Thanks,
    LT

  • Simple Tweening in Fireworks? ala Imageready..

    Hello
I used to use Imageready - to make simple animated gifs.
I would take 2 frames in the animation - and Select add Tween between, pick a number and it would tween one frame into the next.
I'm trying to do this in Fireworks, but it's asking about Symbols, States, and other overly complicated things - what's an easy way to do this?
I have so far a file with 4 states.
I want to put 5 frames of tween between each state.
I will end up with an animation with 24 frames (4 originals, 20 tweened frames).
Perhaps there is an Imageready-friendly FAQ or guide how to do this somewhere?
    Thanks!

Perhaps I'm making it out to be more complicated than it needs to be, or maybe I'm not understanding some of the terminology, let me elaborate:
I have 4 photos - that I would like create an animated gif out of - a sort of slideshow gif - but not something that 'flashes' each image - I want them to blend into each other - kind of like a slideshow where one image fades out as another fades in, pauses for an amount of time, then fades in/out to another image - make sense?
One good example is how if you set your desktop to change at regular intervals in Mac OS X - it slowly blends each desktop photo/image into the next - so it's not flicking by - if that helps at all.
Not really looking for anything shape/vector related - just a simple slideshow with nice transitions - and the default way Imageready CS/CS2 would do this was perfect - it did it with just layers/frames.
Do I need to pull in the 4 images I want to use, convert them to 'States' then try and tween those States together? I'm looking to be able to streamline this workflow so I can produce these small "slideshow gifs" as I call them whenever I need to.
Hope that helps clear up what I'm after, thanks for your replies so far.

  • ImageReady alternative...?

I hardly used ImageReady when I had CS1 and CS2, but sometimes I needed to make a animated gif and ImageReady was perfect for that. Today someone asked me to change one of the gifs I made, and to my utter surprise I found out ImageReady has been discontinued...! (Which tells how 'often' I sued it. ;) )
So... is there an easy, quick and cheap solution to edit or complete redo an animated gif on a Mac...? Installing ImageReady CS2 is not possible with CS3 installed and I really don't want to reinstall my entire system for this...

On the windows side you can still open a gif with all its frames using File-Import-Video Frames to Layers. The catch is that instead of using the limited pull down menu for file formats (in which gif as an option has been removed), you have to enter *.gif in the file field so that the windows OS will display all gifs as an option. Then you select your gif and the animation opens with each frame in its own layer. The code to open animated gifs is still in photoshop, it's just that the gif option was removed from the GUI. (to encourage more people to buy fireworks, perhaps?)

  • DISGUSTED! ImageReady functionality lost for producing smart objects in GoLive!

It is ABSURD that the rollover/layer-based slice capabilities feature of ImageReady was eliminated and instead replaced by way of mediocrity using manual copy and paste functionality within Dreamweaver. What kind of step-backward mentality is this? I am beyond disappointed and feel betrayed by Adobe, not to mention unbelievably, inconsiderately inconvenienced. Does the title "industry standard" require bowing to irrational development or is this mere laziness on Adobe's part?
Previously I had been able to develop multiple series of rollovers within Photoshop using layers and then switch to ImageReady in order to automatically produce rollover code for a set of images...AS ONE IMAGE FILE. These images could then be placed into GoLive (another hot-button issue!) as SMART OBJECTS - gee, what a concept! - where the targets, if necessary and not already entered within ImageReady, could be linked to any page within the the site folders. Now I can't access the secondary image anywhere at all. It appears that the only solution for us lowly GoLive CS2 users is now to be required to TRIPLE THE AMOUNT OF WORK AND place multiple objects within a page layout, leaving (no pun intended) room for pixel space errors and requiring multiple manual page adjustments when the work was ALREADY DONE IN PHOTOSHOP! Layer-based slices are a work of genius, but NOT without the added capability of automatic rollover detection. How am I supposed to work this out in GoLive?
NOW, only NOW am I discovering that this "merged capability" within Photoshop is missing one of THE MOST INGENIOUS FEATURES EVER and now I am scrambling to find some garbage workaround in order to capacitate the need for a string of visual interface objects. This is the kind of move I EXPECT from Microsoft, but NEVER have I been this put out with Adobe. NEVER.
Is this the only solution? Bend to the will of the Dreamweaver cabal and join the ranks of the Microsuck copy-and-paste zombies? Not only is the new CS3 series "upgrade" cost-prohibitive for most anyone that isn't within the realm of the design elite or corporate ladder-climbing ranks of internal design group budgets, the tools appear to force anyone without the time necessary to learn the intricacies of manual HTML tagging to create nothing but the same garbage website in an infinite spectrum of ineptitude.
Is the new GoLive 9 supposed to accommodate this ridiculous shot-in-the-foot move or am I REALLY going to have to resort to a complete reload of CS2?

Dave and Buko, that's my entire point...I shouldn't have to be using CS2 after purchasing CS3. I have full versions for both thankfully and for this very reason but I don't know if I can install CS2 in addition to CS3 without causing some system file issues. I did briefly read about someone else trying that in another forum.
IR does indeed work great with GoLive CS2. My issue is that the rollovers in the extended Photoshop CS3 do NOT work and don't export code at all. It's damn frustrating that after making the purchase, I feel duped.
And Buko, no, I never even bothered with Dreamweaver. I attempted to learn it several times and was just put off completely. I previously owned both Macrodmedia Studio Professional and the complete Adobe CS2, but the upgrades for the combined product sets which made sense for me and didn't break the bank like purchasing the "Master Suite" didn't even include things like Fireworks, which supposedly has some sort of workaround for rollovers when setting multiple targets in an image file.

  • How to get ImageReady CS slices into Photoshop CS3??

I have several website interfaces designed in Photoshop CS and sliced in ImageReady. I update these sites weekly and need to work within the established slice areas. I now have Photoshop CS3 and none of the slices come with the file when opened thanks to Adobe dropping ImageReady.
    Am I missing something here?
Please help. Updates long overdue to these websites while I try to figure out this problem.
    Thanks.
    Kirk

The slices are for the entire interfaces on database-driven ecommerce sites, so when a product photo changes, etc. I need to replace it and the new one needs to be the exact same size obviously. Given that the interface is built by the database, the various areas that make up the interface (page top, side navigation, etc.) are not in a single document. This makes the option of redrawing all the slices and getting the resulting HTML back into the database very unattractive.
Isn't there some way of getting the existing slices out of ImageReady and into CS3 or Fireworks? Export as something and bring in as slices? Something?
    Thanks.

  • Photoshop Layers to Fireworks Layers

So I just downloaded Fireworks CS6. I have not used Fireworks in a few years, but I was hoping integration with Photoshop was much smoother by now.
I have a PSD with a background and about 50 text layers that I want to open in Fireworks so that I can export each layer individually along with the background and use save for web compression. Sadly, Photoshop does not allow either of those things in its export layers to files script.
However, when I open my PSD in Fireworks, the layers do not come in as layers, they come in as SUBlayers. This is quite baffling to me. Why on earth would Adobe program such nonsense? If I open a PSD in Fireworks why would I want Photoshop layer to EVER be brought in as sublayers unless I actually put them in a layer group in Photoshop?
So then I looked for an option in Fireworks to make all sublayers into individual layers, but I could see no way of doing this. Can anyone please help me figure this out.

I can understand your missing ImageReady; that seems to be a thread that pops up with some regularity.
But I've got a tip for you: Be sure that everything in your original Photoshop file is grouped. Period. If anything is not in a group, then assign it to one. If you do this, the file will open in Fireworks as a series of layers instead of as a series of sublayers.
Keep in mind a few key differences between Photoshop and Fireworks. Photoshop uses a "layer" model where "groups" (i.e., folders) are optional; Fireworks uses an "object" model where "layers" (i.e., folders) are required. If you have no groups in your Photoshop document, it'll import into a single default layer in Fireworks. Add a few groups to your Photoshop document, but leave a few things ungrouped, and Fireworks will still require a layer to contain those ungrouped items, hence the introduction of sublayers to accomodate the existing groups.

  • Imageready 7.0 imagemaps in Photoshop CS3

I work at a company where we have occasional need to publish web pages to our intranet which have irregular shaped slices as links to other pages.
Previously we always used the simple rectangular slice in Photoshop 7.0. Sometimes I would switch to Imageready to make irregular shaped image maps with links to other pages from them.
We have recently "upgraded" to CS3 and I only have access to Photoshop CS3 and Bridge CS3. Upgrading to CS5 is not an option unfortunately.
I have psd files which were last saved in Imageready and contain imagemaps with links in them and all had nice little rollover actions.
Now, I need to use the existing file and links and add a few new imagemaps and links to it using Photoshop CS3.
My understanding from a brief Google search is that I can not actually do what I need to in Photoshop CS3 and in fact need to have Fireworks or Dreamweaver.
This posses a few problems for me:-
    1) Can I open the old imagready file which conatined imagemaps and links in Photoshop CS3 so that I could maybe make simple slices for my new links whilst maintaing the old links based upon the irregular shaped imagemaps?
    2) Am I correct in thinking that I can not make irregular polygonal imagemaps/hotspost in Photoshop CS3?
    3) If this is the case what would you suggest is the best option to an occasional Phothops user such as myself with no current skills in Dreamweaver or Fireworks.
    Any suggestions are much appreaciated.

    3) If this is the case what would you suggest is the best option to an occasional Phothops user such as myself with no current skills in Dreamweaver or Fireworks.
Learn HTML and CSS? Seriously, image maps are just coordinate lists and can be hacked in any text editor, if no UI-based tools are available and that is perfectly doable just with basic HTML as is any stuff with simple links. Of course you can find quite a few free web design tools such as Mozilla's SeaMonkey, so failing other alternatives, it may be worth a try...

    No.

    Yepp.
Again, learn HTML for what you need. You're falling victim to the old misperception that any of this would be dependent on specific tools and features, when all it requires is to understand the specification.

  • What happened to ImageReady?

I used to use ImageReady to create rollovers for web sites.
ImageReady no longer exists in CS3.
Ive looked through the Video Workshops and the help files on
    both Photoshop and Dreamweaver.
There is little or no mention of creating rollovers in
    anything but Dreamweaver.
Is Fireworks (which is not included in the CS3 Designer
Suite) the only app that allows for rollover creation outside of
    doing it manually in Dreamweaver?

I wish Adobe had a price-break update package for contents of
    Macromedia's
    Studio MX:
    Dreamweaver
    Fireworks
    Flash
And InDesign subbing for Freehand (which is developmentally
    dead).
Why InDesign as a sub for Freehand rather than Illustrator?
    I'm one of many
who used Freehand primarily for its desktop publishing
    features rather than
vector drawing. Any graphics I needed could easily be done in
    Fireworks and
    imported.
DW, FW and Flash I use for web work. I really dislike having
    to buy packages
that contain software I have no immediate or projected use
    for. It's similar
to having to shell out for Apple's iLife suite when all you
    really need or
want is an upgrade to iPhoto to organize your graphics. IDVD,
    iMovie and
Gargeband...why should you have to pay for four programs when
    you only need
    one?
Adobe would be doing everyone a favor to allow more
    flexibility in package
    selection and pricing.

  • Where is old ImageReady Layers to Files functionality?

Back in CS2 in ImageReady (now long gone from the Adobe lineup) there was the ability to efficiently export the layers in a Photoshop doc to individual layers. It did this very very quickly and it gave you a TON of control on how the files were named and saved.
Does this functionality exist anywhere in Creative Suites now? I mean OTHER THAN the Export to Layers javascript in Photoshop. That script is insanely slow and has no real control over what files are named.  Right now, I have a Photoshop file with a measly 45 layers and it takes Photoshop CS5 8 minutes to run the script - plus it adds a bunch of spurious characters to the layer names that need to be removed after the fact. Image ready would have run it in less than 30 seconds (and that's in computers from 5 or 6 years ago) and the names would be exactly what they need to be.
I've also tried Fireworks and have had no better luck. Apparently, it will only output Layer GROUPS as layers.  (Honestly, after having Fireworks for several years now I still don't know what it's good for.)
I hope I'm just being grumpy and stupid and have somehow missed something obvious.
    Thanks

    @ Jeffrey
I just checked (I dumped my old machine to a VM) ... ImageReady preserves masks (layer & folder), but ignores adjustment layers.  It also ignores any other layers which are visible.  So in terms of raw output it is very similar to the current CS5 script (apart from CS5 occasionally cropping in to closest fit ... perhaps a feature?).
The ImageReady feature that scored so highly for me was all the presets and file naming combo options for "layers to files" - including sequentials with leading zeros, etc etc - enlightened.  For my line of work (game assets) this workflow is critical.
    Best regards.
