First time ordering - a few quality questions

I am making a book for my mom that will have many pictures that I have scanned in and them imported into iPhoto. Has anyone noticed that printing a photo book greatly reduces the quality of their photos? The scan quality is OK, but obviously not as nice as original digital, and I don't want half the book to look like total crap.
Also, I read thru most of the threads here and noticed a lot of people talking about the dust covers in iPhoto 08 vs. canvas sticker covers (??) in previous versions. I have computers with access to both old and new versions of iPhoto and am wondering which to use. I want a hard cover book that looks professionally done... do the dust covers really not let you have an image on the front? Is it just a blank page? And does the older hard covers really have a sticker of the photo on the front??
And overall, what do you guys think of the quality of the hard cover photo books? Is 10 pages generally too thin? Should I try to beef it up a few pages? Do the pictures ever get wrongly cropped by Apple's manufacturing of the book? Do books look good?
Thanks!!

hiddenmuse:
I had a V6 theme book in progress when I converted over to V7. I looked at the new themes and the dust covers and decided that I really like them better than the glued photo cover. The dust jacket gives you some addition space for dedication and/or other information.
As far as image quality, I can't vouch for V7 as I've not ordered one with V7 as yet, today or tomorrow, but my other hardcover books were very good. Don't expect the quality you'd get in a commercial coffee table photo book as the printing is entirely different. When inspecting the photos in a large hardcover book under 10x magnification I could see the halftone pattern (dots). But not with the naked eye.
I found that the medium books had a halftone pattern visible under strong illumination with the naked eye. The newer softcover books are supposed to be printed at the same resolution as the large so that may not be a problem anymore.
Occasionally users will get oddly colored photos in their books due to some problem at the printers but Apple as been very good a correcting such problems in a timely manner.
As to the quality of the books, IMO they are excellent. I contacted Apple about printing quality and got the following response regarding materials and printing:
I contacted Apple and asked for information that I could pass on. Here's the reply I received from Apple:
"Thank you for contacting the Apple Print Products Customer Service.
I understand that you would like to know the printing process that is used and the color mode the files should be in, so you can better advise users in the iPhoto forum.
iPhoto version 4 or later, allows you to import and print files through the Apple Print Product service as RGB, grayscale, or CMYK color space. JPEG files with RGB color space are recommended for best results.
While iPhoto 2 can import files of various formats, including RGB color, grayscale, and CMYK, this version requires JPEG files with RGB color space when printing photos and books.

Here are some of the technical specifications for the books, cards, and calendars. I hope this gives you an idea about their quality and form.
BOOKS
All iPhoto books are printed using acid-free paper for long-lasting image quality. The photos are printed at a high resolution (300DPI if you use iPhoto 6). There is no external modification--such as sharpening or contrast adjustment--of the photos; what you see in the application is what is printed in the book.
Hardcovers Books
The cover is hard-bound and covered in linen. You select the linen color during the book-ordering process. The hardcover books have a solid, stiff binding that is glued and crimped. The internal pages, measuring 8.5 x 11 inches, are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock.
Softcover Books
The softcover books come in three sizes:
- Large 8.5 x 11 inches
- Medium 6 x 8 inches
- Small 2.6 x 3.5 inches
All of the softcover books have internal pages that are printed on McCoy 100# Text Gloss paper stock. The large softcover book has a white cover (Kromekoteplus Folding Cover, 16 point) with a cutout on the front that reveals the cover-page photo in the book. The covers for the medium and small softcover books have the cover image and title printed directly on the cover. All of the softcover books have a glued binding and feature a thick cover of McCoy 100# Cover Gloss paper stock.
CARDS
All cards are printed on McCoy 120# Silk Cover paper stock. The postcards measure 4 x 6 inches, and the greeting cards measure 5 x 7inches.
CALENDARS
All calendars measure 8 x 10 inches and are printed on McCoy 100# Silk Cover paper stock.
To ensure the best print quality, we have chosen to use Kodak NexPress technology. The press uses a dry toner, which is fused to the surface of the paper. Please see NexPress' site for more information:
KODAK NEXPRESS 2500 Digital Production Color Press
I hope you find this information helpful in answering questions on the iPhoto forum."
Also, users expectations will vary considerably. But every book that I've given as a gift, large hardcover or softcover medium were received with much enthusiasm. I don't think your Mom will be a bit disappointed.
For every book I give as a give I create an iDVD slideshow of it to give also. Tutorial #6 describes the procedure.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

After much back & forth, I’m about to take the plunge and do my own build.  It seems similar to many others here have done, and is pretty close to the VideoGuys DIY build, but it’s my first time and I do have a few questions, so I thought I’d post and get comments.  Here are my specs:

I plan on overclocking using the ASUS auto overclock feature.  From what I’ve read 4.3 seems to be a reliable speed to shoot for.  The videos I’ve watched on the auto overclocking with the UEFI interface look straightforward.
I’m going to use the 670 to power 2 editing monitors via DVI, and an ASUS P24A6 via HDMI as a client monitor.
For the foreseeable future, I’ll be editing AVCHD footage.  Don’t do much motion gfx work, mainly cuts & dissolves, with a fair amount of color correction & grading applied.  How does this system look to do with this configuration with this workflow?
Also, any feedback on cooling appreciated.  It looks like the Noctura has some compatibility issues with this board fully populated with Crucial RAM, so I’m going with the Intel liquid cooler, which looks easy to install and was recommended by ADK.  With this case and this cooler, will I be good or is there any other type of cooling I should add to cool the RAM or the PSU?
Anything else I’m missing?  Thanks much to all who post here.  Special thanks to ADK, their participation here is invaluable and the advice they gave me was much appreciated.  Were this system my main source of income, I’d buy from them for sure.

    Stu,
Looks like you have done a lot of work for this to be your first pass here as a build list; there is a lot more that looks right than wrong.
Regarding how is this system for your workflow? This PC would certainly do what you want it to do.
Regarding cooling, RAM and PSU will be fine.
Regarding is anything missing, yes a Blu-ray burner.
You did not state whether you want to A) build this and leave it alone for years, or B) make some upgrades in the future. If B), I only have a suggestion for your RAM choice. If A), I do have some suggested tweaks to how you spend your budget for this build.
You've heard it here before, but it is so true that Adobe has mastered the ability to tax just about all of your PC components (cpu, RAM, bus, drives, and video card) with Premiere Pro CS5 and above in order to make HD editing fast and fun. This makes balance important and in some ways a system is only as strong as its weakest link.
Your current plans strike me as:
    CPU = A+, RAM = A+++ on paper, but possibly a bad idea, Drives = B-, GPU = A-.
My only strong suggestion is to go for 32GB of 1600 RAM. You want to do a moderately strong OC on the CPU and the memory controller of the 3930k is not strong enough to pull this off.
Minor suggestions: A) more drives - go for at least one 2x1TB RAID 0 array for media, projects, and scratch (adding one more drive). B) SSD for boot - for spending as much as you are here, I think your build deserves a 128GB SSD for the boot/OS drive - no this will not help after Premiere Pro has started and you are editing, but it will make the PC faster for lots of other things that most users do.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • First time linking from FCP. Question regarding normalizing.

    Hello,
I am linking from FCP for the first time. I would like to normalize a number of clips of dialogue. I can do it clip by clip, but when I select a series of clips at the same time, the Normalize feature is grayed (inaccessible). Is there a way to normalize multiple clips at the same time?
    Thanks.
    DG

Even if you could normalize all the clips at once, I don't think you would want to. If they could all be normalized together, you would be normalizing based on the highest peak on one of the audio clips, which would raise or lower all of the audio levels inconsistently. That is unless all of the audio is near identical.

  • First time upgrading, a few questions..

I'm an existing Verizon customer with the original Droid I got when it first released and looking to get the iPhone 4S when it releases.
I plan on pre-ordering it tomorrow on the 7th. I'm not gonna wait until 3:00 EST, but will do so in a reasonable morning hour.
    A few questions:
1.) My contract ends sometime in November (Whenever the Droid 1 came out). I am still grandfathered into the unlimited data plan, correct?
2.) When upgrading to a new phone, are there other fees I should be expecting? (Just so I can get the pre-rage out of the way.)
3.) When I pre-order from the website, I am pre-ordering through delivery, correct? I can't have it put on hold for me at my local Verizon/Apple/Best Buy/etc.?
    Thanks in advance.

Your data plan should not change.  That's what I was told.
2.) When upgrading to a new phone, are there other fees I should be expecting? (Just so I can get the pre-rage out of the way.)
No, just the cost of the phone.
3.) When I pre-order from the website, I am pre-ordering through delivery, correct? I can't have it put on hold for me at my local Verizon/Apple/Best Buy/etc.?
Apple's website specifically says the phones will be delivered.  Can't really find any specific language on Verizon's site, but I think they also will ship the phone directly to you.
    Thanks in advance.

  • First Time Network/Server Set Up Questions

    Hi,
I need help setting up my new Mac Pro including installing and configuring OS X Server (10.5) and setting up the appropriate IP and DNS settings. From reading various posts on this board, it seems like it can be quite complicated. I have no experience setting up a network and was hoping a description of the current set up and the desired set up along with what I think I need to do would be enough to get some input from folks on this board. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Currently, I have a Verizon DSL connection. The Verizon provided modem is connected to an airport extreme base station (latest model). And, there are 4 iMacs connected wirelessly to the airport base station. The connection is a PPPoE connection. My ISP does not provide me with a static IP address. The iMacs connect to the base station using WPA 2.
Are there any other pieces of info that would be helpful to know about the current setup?
I would like to set the server up and add it to the mix. Initially, I only expect to access the server internally. However, I would like to eventually access services remotely. From what I understand, I should set it up "right" from the get go in order to be able to access the services I want remotely at a later date. Otherwise, I might have to reinstall the server and start from scratch later. Is this a possibility?
What I'm thinking is to still have the DSL modem plug into the airport base station. Then have the server connect by ethernet to the base station and still have the iMacs connect wirelessly. I'm thinking that having the airport between the server and the internet makes sense (and offers some additional protection). Does it? Or should the server be between the DSL modem and the base station?
Assuming that setup makes sense, what info do I need to have in place before I try to set the server up? Specifically, what do I need in order to make sure that the iMacs can "see" the server and that the server is accessible remotely over the internet? Is that last bit even possible in the absence of a static IP? And, what should I be able to pull from my iMac and base station and what will I need to reach out to Verizon about?
I also have what I'm assuming is a much simpler question compared to the above ones. The system is not preinstalled with the server. And, I do not have a monitor for the server. What are the steps I need to take to install the Server OS on the Mac Pro remotely? I believe I can do that by installing the Admin Tools on a 10.5 client. This might be a ridiculous series of questions, but do I turn the Mac Pro on first? Do, I put the Server install DVD in the Mac Pro or the client? Any other "obvious" things I should do? Do I need all of the networking info available when I install the Server OS or can I do that in 2 steps?
    Thanks!

Stephen, You might find the $150 DVD on Leopard Server from Lynda.com helpful, or you can subscribe to the site and look at it on line. I am in your same situation. Let me know if you get any good help! I just started the DVD and so far it does answer some of your questions. It also looks like dyndns.com can provide you DNS services that stay in sync with your dynamic IP address. I am calling them tomorrow to figure that out.

    Hi,
U did not mention in which version of Solaris u r installing IWS 4.1
    Try these steps:
(1)Have u chosen the option to install jdk with IWS setup or u manually added the classpath after installation?
(2)Make sure you have the latest operating system patches installed. You can download them from Sun's web site.
(3)It may also be that the environment variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH isn't set. It should probably be set to "/usr/lib:/usr/ucblib". Make sure it is set correctly, and try the installation again.
then try to start the server again

  • Norton antivirus says my licence have expired when switch my computer on for the first time.

I just bought new touchsmart 520-1002 ru (LN649EA). It had norton antivirus preinstalled when i started it for the first time. After few hours of working antivirus informed me that the licence have expired. But before it was like 60 days. What to do? I'm affraid of sirfing the web without antivirus protection. So i'm using iphone. May be i should return it and buy second hand mac?

    Hello Karuser:
Welcome to HP's forum  and your new computer. Nothing to worry about. That was a trial verson. What ever time limit they gave it has expired. I think you miss read it It flashes a reminder all the time. You can still use your computer. Until you purchase or install an anti virus software. The only thing Norton will not do is up date it's self but it will still scan your computer when you open it up and click scan. Try to get anti  virus software. Titanium Maximum 2012, McAfee, and Norton are the top choices to choose from. Try to stay a way from the real cheep ones like Kerpsky that will not protect your computer. My freind installed Kerpsky asked to fix his lap top. Well I did fix it first thing I did was get it on line and run Trend House Call it found over 250 different virus. Some of the worst ones I had to manually removed. Trend House call is a free scan. Trend.com are the one who make Titanium Maximum Security 2012.
You just bought this computer Mac's are great computers but you are very limited to what you can do on them. This one will last you for a very long time ounce we get the bugs out it. My Touchsmart 600-1050 is going strong going into it's third year now. Just had it's frist full recovery done now my computer runs faster and much better then when I first bought it. Yes I had some minor issues fixed on it at first like anything you buy today is not perfect HP covored it all during the one year warranty. My recovery was performed because I picked up a new virus that no anti virus on the market could delete it had to be manually delete it but to much damaged was caused in the operating control software. Otherwise I would be still using Oginal set up.

  • HT1551 Content now plays half way after device froze for the first time

After my device froze for the first time (just a few weeks after I purchased it), it seems
that the device is now malfunctioning. Content from Netflix or purchased from iTunes
only play half way. Sometimes it stops after 30 mins or 1hr, depending on the length,
and most of the time it does not resume, it takes me back to the beginning of the feature.
At first I thought it was a network issue with Netflix, but it happens with iTunes purchases too.
I have my PC and phone connected to the same wifi connection and the signal has never dropped while the
issue occurred with the Apple TV. I have reset the settings on the device and also reentered the wifi info but problem persists.
Any suggestions to fix this issue?

  • First time build questions

I am quite a way through my first build - quite time consuming but a good learning curve. I have a few questions which I hope you could help me with.
    MSI MS-7030 nForce 3 K8N Neo Platinum
    AMD 64bit 3000
    Corsair (VS1GBKIT400) 1024MB (2 x 512MB Matched Pair), DDR400 / PC3200 non-ECC, Unbuffered, CL2.5

Mitsumi 7-in-1 Floppy Drive / Media Drive
Windows 2000 Pro or Windows 2000 Server
    Microsoft PS2 Internet Keyboard
    Microsoft Optical mouse
    Tablet Wacom Graphire 2
Wireless ADSL Router (wired to desktop) D-Link DSL 604
Bios - The basic building tips mentions going into bios before loading Windows. Have not changed much in my bios except boot order. My Seagate Sata 160gb was detected fine as was everything else except a cd drive where the cable had pulled out on the MOB.
Should I change other settings in the bios before installing Windows or later. And if so which are the key settings to change and how do I work out what to change them to? (I am a bit green on bios) I looked at the link breaking through the bios barrier but other than reading every single item... Not sure where to start.
I also flashed the bios to the latest version - should I have done this? Or waited till later?
Windows I am using quite old versions of Windows 2000 Professional and Windows 2000 Server. In both cases including before flashing the bios the setup of devices phase seems to freeze, the blue bar does not move. If I reboot setup quickly moves to where it left off, moves a bit further then freezes again. If I repeat reboot about 4 or 5 times I eventually get Windows working OK.
But the last time I did this I installed Windows 2000 Server over the top of Windows 2000 Pro. Not sure this was a good idea as the MSI drivers won't load. The install program opens and does not seem to do anything.
I am inclined to format the os area of the drive and install Windows again. One of my colleagues suggested that using Windows XP Professional might resolve the problem of Windows 2000 appearing to hang when installing.
Reference material I have read a couple of Build Your Own books before starting this build but found they were a bit light on detail and out of date. There is a lot of helpful information on the Interet but I think I could do with something which would improve my knowledge. Would the latest edition of Upgrading and Repairing PCs  by Scott Mueller be a good choice? How well does it cover bios for example which I understand only superficially or would I be better (poorer financially) buying individual books on different subjects e.g. "Breaking through the Bios barrier" by Adrian Wong.
I don't plan to build PC's on a regular basis but would like to understand more than I do at present.

    Thanks for all the replies.
I will take the advice on bios and leave well alone at this stage.
Will reformat tonight and install Windows XP and see how it goes.
Couple of immediate questions. On my current PC I have 4 different boots but only really use one. My current PC has Windows 2000 Pro with 2gb, 20 gb for apps and the balance of the 80 gb drive for data. Also an 8gb drive which I hardly ever use.
Current plan on my new PC is to initially use the 160gb SATA as 20 gb combined partition for OS and apps and the balance for data. Or are there really benefits for keeping the operating system separate from apps? Using Partititon Magic fast to set up although currently it is only seeing 132 GB although the bios is correctly reporting 160GB. Presumably this is something I need to adjust in Windows once fully installed.
My 80gb drive has IBM ontrack overlay software. I managed to transfer everything to the new drive using PcAnywhere via the router. Which was great as the first time I have got two machines to talk to each other via the ADSL Router. (This was a great relief as I could not PcAnywhere to work via a serial cable!)
My inital intention was to use the 80GB as the OS / Apps drive but based on the other problems I have had, now decided to build and use the system based on a single 160 SATA drive first then when I am sure it is stable go to plan B with using the 80GB IDE drive as the Windows and Apps drive. I then need to reformat the 80GB drive as it currently has IBM Ontrack overlay software because my previous PC bios could not see 80GB otherwise. Considering at that stage installing Windows 64 bit beta on the 160GB drive.
I don't think I need Raid at this stage although I have a little bit of experience as my SQL Server has two Raid drives (0?) plus a hot swop drive stored in our fire proof safe.
I use AVG free antivirus and have the latest version ready to install.
Regarding firewall - confused as to what is required. Was under the impression that my ADSL Router has a hardware firewall. Also the motherboard has a firewall as well doesn't it? Do I also need a software firewall? There is a free one recommended on the AVG (Grisoft site)
By the way. I was a bit apprehensive when doing the build and took hours over it being very careful to read and follow the steps in motherboard, CPU and case (Antec Sonata) manuals step by step - a very slow process. All the cables in the case looked very intimidating at first.
The whole thing is extremely straightforward and towards the end everything became very logical. All the parts I used seem extremely well designed and easy to use. The only part where I had doubts was pushing down the plastic lever on the AMD retail heat sink. I wondered whether I had understood it correctly and whether it was going to snap.

  • Inside Back Cover Fold-out (first-time question)

Hello,  I have a new project that I will be starting in a couple of weeks in which I will be creating a 150 page booklet.  What they are requesting is that the back cover fold out so that a floor plan can fit.  What's going to happen is that there will be an ad on the inside back cover but attached and able to fold out will be a floor plan. However, the edge of the Inside Back cover will be perferated so that the floor plan can be torn out, if so desired.
I have created plain, saddle-stich magazines before, but this is my first go at a perfect bound booklet with a fold out like this.  So these are my questions.
    - Again because this my first time doing this, I was wondering if there is formal name for a back-cover fold out...How is usually referred to?
    - They are unsure if the floor plan is going to take up 2 extra folds or 3 folds beyond that back cover...because I am unfamiliar with this process, i don't know if the printer has to set the amount of folds or if I can make it as many as I want depending on how the floor plan fits.
    - (this question is about setting up the indesign file)
In normal magazines, the pages are setup in 2-page spreads, with the back cover being by itself.  In order to set up this up, (and let's say the floor plan is set to 2 folds beyond the inside back cover), do I just add 2 pages to the right on the second to last page, and 2 pages to the left on the last page (which I know I can do by unchecking "Allow selected spread to shuffle")?
Thanks a lot for any advice,  I surely appreciate it.

If your cover is the only thing with a flap/foldout, you can save yourself a whole lot of time by creating a seperate file for the cover. And you can set as many folds as you want, as long as budget isn't an option (folds cost money and using a bigger page size usually affects the cost).
Set up the cover as one sheet with fold lines (setting a slug area is good for this). The folds for your map need to be smaller than the page size. This link might help: http://indesignsecrets.com/amazing-folding-calculator-pdf.php
