Inside Back Cover Fold-out (first-time question)

Hello,  I have a new project that I will be starting in a couple of weeks in which I will be creating a 150 page booklet.  What they are requesting is that the back cover fold out so that a floor plan can fit.  What's going to happen is that there will be an ad on the inside back cover but attached and able to fold out will be a floor plan. However, the edge of the Inside Back cover will be perferated so that the floor plan can be torn out, if so desired.
I have created plain, saddle-stich magazines before, but this is my first go at a perfect bound booklet with a fold out like this.  So these are my questions.
- Again because this my first time doing this, I was wondering if there is formal name for a back-cover fold out...How is usually referred to?
- They are unsure if the floor plan is going to take up 2 extra folds or 3 folds beyond that back cover...because I am unfamiliar with this process, i don't know if the printer has to set the amount of folds or if I can make it as many as I want depending on how the floor plan fits.
- (this question is about setting up the indesign file)
In normal magazines, the pages are setup in 2-page spreads, with the back cover being by itself.  In order to set up this up, (and let's say the floor plan is set to 2 folds beyond the inside back cover), do I just add 2 pages to the right on the second to last page, and 2 pages to the left on the last page (which I know I can do by unchecking "Allow selected spread to shuffle")?
Thanks a lot for any advice,  I surely appreciate it.
Kdubbie

If your cover is the only thing with a flap/foldout, you can save yourself a whole lot of time by creating a seperate file for the cover. And you can set as many folds as you want, as long as budget isn't an option (folds cost money and using a bigger page size usually affects the cost).
Set up the cover as one sheet with fold lines (setting a slug area is good for this). The folds for your map need to be smaller than the page size. This link might help: http://indesignsecrets.com/amazing-folding-calculator-pdf.php

  • 24p Advanced on P2/Hard Drive - First Timer Questions

I'm getting ready to edit a project that is going to be shot on a Panasonic HVX 200- onto 8 gig "P2" cards, downloading them on set to a mini mobile editing system to a Digital Hard drive. The production company is going to send me the hard drive. It will apparently be shot 24p advanced. Normally, everything I've worked on for years has been shot on 35mm or 16mm and transferred to beta or Dbeta for me to edit with. I will not be finishing this project - only offlining, but I have some questions:
I can edit 24p Advanced HD with FCP, correct?
Since It's only going to be on a hard drive, should I transfer it to my CalDigit SATA RAID to edit with?
I use an AJA io SDI box and the new JVC flatpanel HD/SD broadcast monitor. Will I be able to output this on my monitor with this setup?
Anything special to look for when outputting 24p EDLs?
Basically, any advice on workflow with this would be greatly appreciated. I'm an old-school, film and Avid convertee and I hope to make a smooth transition to HD.
MacBook Pro, FCP 5.1, AJA io, Caldigit SVRDuo 1.5TB, Lacie Rugged FW Drive   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Other Macs/Editing Systems Owned

The raw P2 files. They're in a folder with the job name. It's listed "Card 1", "Card 2", etc... I'm copying them over as we speak to the RAID.
No no no. STop...stop now. That is NOT what you are supposed to do. You need to import the footage FROM that drive using the P2 IMPORT (or Log and Import...whatever the FCP 6 term for it is)...LEAVE the raw on the Lacie. Importing them converts them to Quicktime files you can edit.
You gotta watch this tutorial before you go ANY further:
    http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/pagewrapper.cgi?forumid=8&page=http://www.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/p2workflow/index.html
When I create a Capture Scratch folder, I tend to get several "Capture Scratch" folders inside of that folder (as opposed to having them all in the OMFI folder in the Avid). How do I keep them all organized into one folder (or do I need to do this?)\
Stop thinking in Avid terms now. Get that out of your head.
When you choose the CAPTURE SCRATCH, choose the drive itself. NOT A FOLDER ON THAT DRIVE. This way you'll have all the right folders on the base level of the drive.
How do I keep them all organized into one folder (or do I need to do this?)
Click on Underdog to get to my blog...then click on the DVD on the right hand side. This is my tutorial DVD on how to organize yourself in FCP. FCP does things VERY differently from an Avid, and if you take the Avid approach you'll get lost and burried, FAST. Buy this DVD (shameful plug) and watch it. But watch that tutorial first.
Again, this will be conformed elsewhere, but hopefully, my EDL and ref tape will do the trick.
Get this figured out now. Talk to who is finishing it because this workflow is VERY different from a tape based one. There is no offline, you are cutting at full resolution. There is no conform, as there will be no recapturing of the footage. It is unnecessary. They need to talk to the finishing house now and get this figured out before you do something you shouldn't.

  • Time machine would back up only the first time after I shut off my imac and started it up again.  Then it would fail or claim it could not locate my external Hard Drive even though it's icon was showing in the time machine dialog window.

Time machine only ever backed up the first time it runs immediately after I start up my computer after it has been shut off.  All other back up attemps fail.  Recently it stopped recognizing the icon for my external hard drive in the time machine dialog window where you select the hard drive to back up to, and turn on and off the time machine function.  Now the external HD icon only shows up on the desk top but no longer in the dialog box. I just tried shutting the computer off and turning it on again and now the light is on, on the external hard drive but the icon does not even appear on the desk top.
The external hard drive is a 1TB Seagate. The drive still has plenty of unused capacity.  I ran a diagnostic test on it. It said the disk needed repair but the repair function would not work. The message stated that it could not be unmounted and repair is not available because the disk can't be written to. The Mac OX utility said the disk can still be opened but can't be changed nor repaired.  The external HD is not S.M.A.R.T. supported.
I haven't tried replacing the cable yet. Is that the next thing I should try?

What Mac OSX version are your running ("iOS" as shown in your profile cannot run on a Mac computer)?

  • Time Machine: Repeated errors when backing up for the first time using a new external firewire drive

My Iomega 500GB firewire external drive failed on me last week and I have just replaced it with an identical model. I used to use the old drive with Time Machine on my MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 with no issues, until the drive had a hardware failure and stopped spinning up, hence the replacement.
Two days ago I tried using Time Machine for the first time with the replacement external drive. The backup failed and each subsequent backup attempt has failed since then with a different error each time. The drive cannot be ejected using Finder (Finder says disk is in use and cannot be ejected even when no processes are running except for Finder and Time Machine has been disabled), by dragging it to the dock (hangs computer which can only be fixed by a hard reboot), in Disk Utilities (drive cannot be unmounted) or in Terminal ("no such file or directory").
The first backup attempt failed after 3 hours of "preparing" with the message "The backup was not performed because an error occured while creating backup directory".
I tried repairing the disk in Disk Utilities and Disk Utilities said the drive was OK ("the volume Time Machine Backups appears to be OK"). I tried ejecting the drive (hard reboot of computer and disconnecting the drive), plugging it back in again and trying again.
This time it started backing up, then failed after a few minutes with the message "an error occured while copying files to the backup volume". I had a look at the troubleshooting suggested on http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/C3.html and followed instructions. It failed again, so I did a full reset as per http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/A4.html.
It failed again, so I tried reparing the drive again in Disk Utilities and again it said it was OK. I tried using different cables and ports (Firewire 400 instead of Firewire 800), and backups still fail.
I have turned off anti-virus scanning (Sophos). I have tried excluding it from Spotlight but this causes an error message from Spotlight. I have tried trashing the com.apple.TimeMachine.plist file and rebooting. I have tried selecting deselecting the drive as the back up in Time Machine preferences, selecting "None", then "Stop Backing Up" then quitting preferences, rebooting, disconnecting the drive, reconnecting the drive and selecting the drive again as the backup disk in Time Machine preferences. I have tried erasing the drive completely, rebooting, and trying to back up again.
None of these have worked. This is a brand new drive and I do not want to have to replace it again if I do not have to.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you.

    Hello, some possible clues...
Should you click “Start New Backup”? Not yet! If you see the dialog above, your existing Time Machine backup is corrupt, and you might not be able to recover data from it. But you can save a copy of the corrupt bundle and, perhaps, extract some data from it if needed.
Ask yourself if Time Machine has saved data you might need before deciding what to do next:
If you are sure you won’t need anything backed up before today, click “Start New Backup” and let Time Machine do its thing.
Otherwise, click “Back Up Later” and save a copy before letting Time Machine start a new backup. Just look for a file called “computername.sparsebundle” (for network backups) or “Backups.backupdb” (for local ones) and create a copy with a different name. You can open sparsebundle files with DiskImageMounter and browse them like any other disk. More information is available here.
There you go. If you click “Start New Backup” when you see this dialog box, Time Machine will erase all of your old backup data and start a new bundle. It won’t be corrupt, but it will be empty.
Note that you can manually initiate a Time Machine backup integrity check by option-clicking the “Time Machine” icon in the menu bar and selecting “Verify Backups.”
    http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/08/11/time-machine-completed-verification-backups- improve-reliability-time-machine-create-backup/
According to This Time Machine resource   “This appears only on Snow Leopard, and started with the Time Capsule Backup Update 1.0 in mid-May of 2010.  It also seems to have been included in the 10.6.3 v1.1 update and 10.6.4.”
So, what can you do about it?  Grin and bear it, it seems, until Apple fixes it.
One thing you can do to make the backup take less time is to connect your machine to your Time Capsule or other backup drive via Ethernet for the duration of the initial backup.

  • Error message on iphone 3GS when initiating back-up for the first time "icloud backup failed - how to fix

When initiating back-up of my 3GS to icloud for the first time, I repeatedly receive an error message reading:
    "iCloud backup failed
There was a problem enabling iCloud backup"
I cannot find a solution to this problem amd no amount of checking and rechecking account settings etc. has made any difference. Does anyone have experience of how to overcome this issue. The iCloud back-up initiated on my iPad without any problem so I do not think the problem is account related.
    Thanks.

    Same problem here...
I just upgraded my 3GS to iOS5 and signed into iCloud using my Apple ID...
Every time I click "Back Up Now" in the iCloud preferences on the iPhone, I get "There was a problem completing the backup.  Please try again later."
On my wife's iPhone 4, I just performed a back up and there were no errors.  I tried this also on my wife's iPad 2 and it worked perfectly.
    I have tried the following:
    1. In iTunes, when my phone is connected, I selected "Back up to iCloud" on the summary tab
    2. Reset my phone using the steps in the above post
    3. Deleted the iCloud account on my iPhone and logged in again
    4. Tried to backup from 3 different wireless networks
None of the steps above fixed the issue which has been going on all day for me...
Any other help would be great - thanks!

  • Publishing Site First Time Question

    Hi,
I just got Dreamweaver 8 and have a domain/hosting service
with GoDaddy.. I understand that you can FTP the site using
Dreamweaver by defining the site and moving the folders there with
the blue arrow in the files menu. Sorry for the basic question, but
does this happen immediately if I move my index over? I'm not
exactly sure of the process of it.. This is my first site.. I do
have Dreamweaver experience, but not publishing experience.. Thank
you so much for your help..

    > Sorry for the
    > basic question, but does this happen immediately if I
    move my index over
    not sure what you mean-
Yes- if you select a local file, and click PUT, it FTP's the
    file to the
remote server. It immediately puts a copy of that file on the
    host.

  • First time question

I have imported a mix of movie and stills into elements 4 and most are good but some of the stills turn black as soon as they are moved to the sceneline. Any ideas out there please?

Do you mean Premiere Elements 4? PRE has its own forum and it's usually best to ask PRE questionst there, because that's where all the video mavens hang out:

  • Annoying click coming from iPhone 3g's back cover

    Hi,
I seem to be having a minor annoyance with my iPhone 3G.
The problem is the back cover, approximately where the bit that says 8gb when depressed, it makes a annoying clicking noise.
This is most annoying when I press the Home button, and it causes the back cover to click every time.
Is there any fix to this?

As already provided, if there is an Apple store nearby, you should make an appointment first.
You take the iPhone in, explain the problem, and if it is determined that your iPhone needs to be exchanged, you remove the SIM card and you will place it in the iPhone provided for the exchange. If activation is required which is likely since the SIM card needs to be "married" the iPhone's IMEI number, the Apple store should be able to do this for you.
With an exchange, you will receive an iPhone only provided in a white unsealed box. You don't need to take everything included in the retail box when your iPhone was purchased new since your iPhone is being exchange only.
One other thing if your iPhone is exchanged under warranty, before handing your iPhone over for the exchange, go to Settings > General > Reset, and select Erase All Content and Settings. This is a secure erase and takes about an hour or so. Make sure your iPhone has a good charge before taking it to the store for the secure erase option.

  • Issue with First Quiz Question

When I try to go back BEFORE answering the first quiz
question, when I move forward again to the first question, it tells
me that "You did not answer the question completely"and it will not
allow me to answer this question or any additional questions. (I
have set the option to use the BACK button in a quiz.) If I answer
the FIRST question, it allows me to go backwards on any additional
questions. Why can't I move backwards before I answer the first
question? Is there something I am missing?

As Mzedella said, my understanding is that backing out of the
quiz (going backwards past the first question) costs the user an
attempt, so if you've only allowed one attempt, the questions are
    considered not answered....
We have a mix of content and questions (not a single block of
quiz questions), and wanted to allow backward movement. We solved
this problem by making the first slide a question. That way, the
user is always in the quiz and they can move backward as much as
    they like.
If you can't think of a good question for the first slide
(often a question about their background knowledge is good), you
can always make it 'are you ready to begin?'. A little clumsy, but
you get the functionality you want.
We further required all questions to be answered, so users
can't skip ahead past unanswered questions. By removing the nav
bar, but including a menu (via skin), users can easily review the
material, but are still required to at least click through all the
slides. This works for our application, but you many want something
    different.

  • First Time Backup Using Ver. 7

After inserting my 3rd blank DVD during backup, the msg "tfswctrl.exe - wrong volume" (Please insert vol. Backup 2006-08-17 into drive E) appeared. The itunes screen indicates that music/data is still being written to the DVD. Am I safe to assume that itunes is in fact backing up? I responded to the msg with "continue".

Your post is confusing me a bit.  You say you were backing up, but a backup is making a second copy of files in case you lose the first copy.  Why did you then move the media folder to the trash?  Drag it back to your iTunes folder.
Which tutorial did you follow?  A link would help.
To properly back up iTunes the first time you would quite iTunes, copy (drag) the whole iTunes folder in your Home > Music to the external drive, disconnect the drive, then start iTunes as normal for continued use.
Perhaps you were trying to move your library to the external drive but if that's the case you need to say you want to move it, not back up.

  • Perform a first time install again???

i recently bought a Nokia E63... and set it all up and did the first time install. I found out the charger didn't work so i formatted the E63 and i was going to return the phone. Turns out they just gave me a new charger.
i lost a few applications that came with the phone during the first time use/install period when i first turned on the phone... applications such as games and i cant remember what else. Is there anyway i can get all my applications back and do another first time install?

Most of application u can get back from OVI store.
but you wont be getting the Advance call manager full version now.
You have to purchase now as it is available for trial just only for 15 calls.
    Applications came with E63:

  • Computer keeps Configuring and setting up for first time use

I have a toshiba A505-S6980 that has been working fine for a couple years.  Recently I had performance issues and suspected virus, spyware so I did a recovery with the original discs I made when I first got the computer.  Four of the six discs reloaded fine.  It did not ask for the last two discs "Environment 64 bit and Applications and Drives.  I also have a System Repair disc.  After loading the four recovery discs the computer now keeps recycling between preparing for first time use, configuring system, reboot and then back to preparing for first time use, etc.  I think I'm close to getting this, but need a last bit of help.
    Thanks

It's been a couple days since you posted this problem. Did you get anywhere, or are you still stuck in that loop? If it's still stuck, you may just want to perform the recovery again.

  • Dropped iphone 4s and back cover has a huge crack. any way to fix the crack

I accidentally dropped my iphone 4s and the back cover has a crack, how can i fix it?

All you can do is get the broken back cover replaced.  First call would be one of your carriers shops or Apple store, other than that loads of repairers on the web. And then get your self a good quality Case for your Idevice
i.e. Otterbox Lifeproof etc saves a lot of hassle

  • E72 Back Cover detachment/heating problems

I have E72 which is about a month old. I am having peculiar problem of the back cover coming out automatically (especially when put down and again picked up). It should be something to do with the press lever which gets activated when kept down, I think.
Also the mobile heats up every now and then without ant sufficient activity.
Does anybody else have such problems?

Is the back clicking into place properly? In my experience sometimes E72s have the opposite problem of not being the easiest things to open.
As for the heating, this model has a large proportion of its outer casing made of metals which will hold and transmit heat more than their plastic counterparts. If the heat seems excessive or appears to affect the operation of the phone, then there would be a problem in which case you are best having it checked by a Nokia service point.
