First turn-on for new 27" iMac Retina?

My current iMac is 4 years old and still running 10.6.8.  Where can I find "foolproof" instructions for initiating a new 27" Retina with data transferred from current iMac? I wish not to have "cloud" storage at this time.  I've been putting this decision off until now after finding that TurboTax 2014 will not run on my current iMac!

When you first boot up your new Mac it will ask if you want to transfer your files, etc. at this time.  This is the easiest time to do that.  Just be sure you have a TM drive connected or other suitable device.  I've done this several times and no issues.

  • Vesa Mount for New 27" iMac, does it exist?

    Hi,
Has anyone found a solution for mounting the new 27" iMac? The Vesa mount apparently doesn't fit the new computer.
    Thanks!

I found this but I don't have confirmation that it works, nor can I find out how to dissassemble my iMac to do so:

If anyone thinks this might work (or better still if you've tried it), please let me know.

  • Displayport video input support for new 27" iMac

Does anyone know if the new 27" iMac just released today has support for displayport video input like the previous generation 27" iMac does? Please tell me you haven't taken this awesome feature away in the midst of the change to Thunderbolt ports etc! I'm asking because in the previous gen iMac specs it clearly states that displayport video input is supported but it doesn't mention it in the tech specs section of the new iMac.
Could someone from Apple please let me know? Thanks.
    Mike

I am tempted to go out and buy a new HDMI to mini-displayport adapter and connect it to a new iMac at the Apple store to see for myself........
I'd hold up on that.  I don't see a mini displayport on the new iMac.  Looks like it goes through the Thunderbolt interface.  Scroll down to connectors.

  • ITunes Match - attempts to turn on for new iPad Mini result in dreaded Transfer message

Let me start by saying that I did  search these forums for an exact match to my issue, but did not find anything acceptable.
First, let me be clear, this is a brand new iPad Mini w/Retina Display.   It's replacing my wife's older iPad 3rd Gen device. We restored it via iCloud with my wife's Apple ID.  This same id is what is entered in the iCloud settings on the new device.  iCloud Keychain and Find my iPhone are both on and associated with this same Apple ID.
However, for iTunes and App Store purchases, we are using a different Apple ID (mine), which is the same id we used on the prior device for iTunes and App purchases (mirrored settings).  For all intents and purposes, the two device are configured identically (iCloud - her id, iTunes and App purchase - my id).  We are able to download updates, buy new apps, etc.  And, during the restore, all apps were re-installed using my id.  This is normal, and the second scenario described on Apple's support web site page for iTunes Match (using different Apple IDs for iCloud and iTunes Match). Also, just to note that iTunes Match was enable on the old iPad.
The fact that new iPad is configured for iTunes and App store purchases with my ID, I would think that turning on iTunes Match would be as simple as toggling the switch from off to on.  And, at first, it does.  I get the usually warning about erasing the iTunes libarary  and I click ok.  But a few seconds later I get the dreaded Apple ID transfer message for iTunes Match to work, the whole 90 day timer thing, etc.  You can either cancel the operation or Transfer.  So, my question is as follows:
Why would I need to transfer the device to the iTunes and App purchases Apple ID for the iTunes to work, if it's already configured to use that same id for iTunes?  The last thing I want to do is transfer the device (iCloud) Apple ID to mine just to turn on iTunes Match.  Makes no sense.
And, just as an fyi, I've check all the limits (10 total computers and ios devices) for iTunes match, and I'm well below that limit.  I see no reason why enabling iTunes Match would require me to transfer the entrie device to the iTunes and App associated Apple ID.
Anyway?  At least explain to me that if I hit Transfer, all it will do is allow iTunes Match to work and not effect the iCloud Apple ID setup?

    Stuart Levine wrote:

This is correct. iTunes Match and iCloud are separate services and do not depend on one another. You can have distinct Apple IDs for each one.

  • Turning on brand new 15 inch retina display MBP

I have just got a new MBP (2 days old) . To turn it on, once it has been shut down, I have to hold down the power button for abnormally long time....is this normal? You have to keep your finger pressed down on the power button until it switches on (much like the time you have to hold it down if you were to force close a frozen screen). Surely this isn't right?
The mac has been working perfectly apart from this and the fact that on the first day I was working on it, suddenly the mouse cursor disappeared/became invisible. I could still move around the screen but without being able to see where the mouse was. After a few minutes it came back.  Wasn't really thrilled with this happening to a brand new top of the range computer, but maybe it is nothing to worry about?
I am just a bit jittery as my old macbook pro (3 years old) just died on me. Started with fuzzy screen jumping about, then screen split in half and mirrored (left side was on the right and right side on the left) then few days later screen went stripy, then days later went blue (worked on odd days in-between) then finally froze on a white screen and wouldn't turn on.
Going to see a Genius isn't really an option as I am a flight and train ride away from any Apple store.

OS X Mavericks updates the power button behavior on Mac computers.
Using the Power Button to Sleep & Wake
Tap the power button in Mavericks to put your Mac to sleep or to wake it up:
Tap the power button once to put your Mac to sleep.
Tap the power button again to wake your Mac.
Press the power button for a moment to sleep or wake your Mac.
    Accessing the Shut Down Dialog
Press and hold the power button for 1.5 to 2 seconds to see additional options
Forcing your Mac to turn off
Hold down the power button for 5 seconds to force the computer to turn off.
Important: You may lose unsaved documents if you force the computer to turn off this way.
Use this method of turning off your Mac only if it has become unresponsive for an extended period of time.
Normally you should shut down the computer by selecting Shut Down from the Apple menu, or from the shut down dialog pictured above.

  • Supported resolutions for new 27" iMac

Would someone with a 27" iMac please do me a favor and go to System Preferences -> Displays and post back the list of supported resolutions?
I took the resolution down a notch (from the default native resolution) on my current 24" and it will make the desktop fonts larger - albeit just a tad less crisp, but it's a whole lot better than having to squint.
In any case, I just spent 40 (!!) minutes on hold with the Apple store until my phone battery went dead - he put me on hold because he didn't know the answer to that simple question.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess Barbara isn't wanting a Mac Pro. Let me guess ... Price. By the time you plunk enough money for a 27 inch iMac to suit your needs, the Pro won't look so expensive. If you know what you are doing "under the hood," there is a seller of used Macs in your neck of the woods. Check out PowerMax in Beaverton, Oregon. Not long ago, the Pro could be downgraded and priced out at something like $1700 new. Why did that have to stop? I can see Windows better. Used W7 Beta and RC on this iMac and could see if fine, once I bumped up the DPI to 125%. Audio drivers didn't work correctly, among other BootCamp issues. I absolutely hate 10.6 and have returned to 10.5. Windows ain't so bad ..... honest. At least you get to have the box your way. Guess we both must have what suits our needs. You could get the 21.5 iMac (newest) and hook it up to an external screen. Um, how silly is that? Steve isn't doing either of us justice. Stubborn old goat!

  • Best and easiest B/U device for new 27" iMac?

I'm going to be using BootCamp for playing games on the Windows side of my my iMac. I read somewhere that you can't b/u Windows with TimeMachine. What would be the best external HD for the money to b/u both systems?

You can back up your Windows volume with Time Machine, but it's turned off by default and the Windows backup with Time Machine is near useless.
Instead, you can use WinClone > http://twocanoes.com/winclone/ Or just use the Windows backup system. Any external drive will work, but the main advantage of WinClone is that it makes easier the process to store both OS X and Windows backups in the same external disk, in different partitions

  • First post, looking for new Demand5 eps

    Hello forum
As stated first post so keeping it simple. Where is the last Walking Dead episode (25/08) on Demand5 in Catch Up section. It has regularly been accessable by 12pm Monday since season 3 aired but no sign of it today.
I noticed the new Once apon a time and The Barrior are on and wondered if someone had forgotton to update it.
    Hangnail

Don't normally add to my own posts without reply but wanted to update.
I see that channel 5 has replaced the Monday repeat with Under the Dome. Can anyone at BT confirm that this precludes them from showing The Walking Dead.
Any information, even a head scratch would be something at this point. Thank you

  • Cool Down Options for New 27" imac i5

Ok, so the i5 gets pretty hot after some heave use and my CPU fan speeds up to keep things cool. My question is what is better to do for cooling down after heavy use?
+1. Put the computer to sleep, no fan running.+
    Or
+2. Shut down all apps, let the fan run and let the computer do its thing. Going from screen saver 5min.- display sleep 15min.- then to full sleep 45min.+
Cuzz with option 2, the fans have time to run to cool the computer down and then go to sleep. But with option 1 it just sleeps and natural cools over time.
What would be better practice to do? and i am sorry if this has been posted before. I searched and could not find anything. Just shut down v.s. sleep.

    Hi Oc Bro
None of the above, I would keep working or playing..... Just because a fan or fans kick up there is no reason to stop what you are doing, the iMac should continue to cool or maintain a safe temperature even if you continue to use it.
However #2 if I was done using it, except that I would only Sleep the Display (no Screen Saver) for a short time prior to Auto Sleeping the Computer.

  • Suggest test for new iMac

I've been using iPhone and iPad for some years now and have decided to change from PC
    to Mac.
After reading in this forum I'm a little confused about what to expect from the new iMac. So I'd like to understand
if this machine will be buggy or worth the effort to install all SW as well as making all adaptions.
I wonder if anyone kindly could advice me what parts of hardware (possibly also SW) to give a check and how to test them.
While asking, what is the best set up for best performance according to you?
I've ordered an iMac, with the 27 inch screen, 3.2 GHz quad core, 8 GB DDR, 1 TB fusion drive, GeForce GTX 680MX with 2 GB and Time capsule plus an USB superdrive.

No checks are necessary however if you feel you must  then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and that should be about all that's needed. However to be totally honest IMHO that is a complete waste of time. What I'd recommend you do is get your PC ready to migrate your data, when you first turn on the new iMac it will start a process called Setup Assistant, part of that is asking if you migrating from another Mac or PC. Pondini does an excellent job explaining SA and how to migrate successfully in Lion or Mountain Lion Setup Assistant tips
Also as a new person to OS X I would strongly recommend bookmarking and using Mac 101 .

  • I am thinking of getting my first Macbook pro for uni and was just wondering which one would be the best? The macbook pro or macbook pro with retina display? or even wait for the new release in 2013 ?

I am thinking of getting my first Macbook pro for uni and was just wondering which one would be the best? The macbook pro or macbook pro with retina display? or even wait for the new release in 2013 ?

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences.  If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section.  Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.
    Ciao.

  • How can I turn off that Maveriks at iMac is scanning continuously for new devices?

Hi, I have a iMac (early 2008) updatet to 10.9 Maveriks with Bluetooth mouse, mousepad en keyboard. I listen at home to music with a Onkyo TX-NR626 A/V receiver (with Bluetooth) via my iMac, iPad and android device.
When I startup or wake up my iMac, Maveriks is always staring to scan for new Bluetooth devices?!. Than every time, my receiver (also when the receiver is turned off) is turning on and change to Bluetooth mode.
I can't turn off the Bluetooth function at my Onkyo TX-NR626 A/V receiver. With Mountain Lion, I didn't had this problems.
I want to turn of the continuously scanning procedure after startup or wake up on my iMac.
    My question is:
How can I turn off that Maveriks is scanning continuously for new devices?
How can I turn off the detection mode of my iMac?

Kinda funny... I found this article while searching for an answer to my question:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93610
At the very end of the article, it mentions the "bug" that only one app on Windows can play direct sound at a time. That's exactly the "feature" I'm looking for on the Mac. Funny how one person's bug is another's feature.

  • Fix permissions for external WD drive on new iMac retina 5K

    Hello there!
I have an external drive (WD - My Passport 1T), NTFS formatted, has worked (and still works) perfectly with my old MacBook Pro.
I've purchased the new iMac Retina 5K, and connected my external drive to it, but for some reason I can only read from it but not write on it (when I check information under "Sharing and Permissions:" it says "You can only read".
I can still write on this drive when I connect it back to my old MacBook Pro...
I didn't change any definitions that might have any effect on this... How can I fix this?
Thanx in advance for any help...

If you installed an emulator such as Parallels Desktop, it may have bundled the NTFS-3G drivers, Paragon NTFS, or a different program which enables the Mac to write to NTFS drives with it. This program needs to be installed on the iMac.
