First Volume Alias in Login Items Aways Fails

I am using OS X 10.4.5.
I have a number of Volumes in my list of Login Items. The first one always fails to mount, but the others mount without any problems. It doesn't matter which Volume I put first in the list - it always fails.
The Volumes are share points set up on the server, OS X Server 10.4.5.
Any suggestions?

When I look at the path of the CLOSET in Login Items, it reads /Volumes/CLOSET, so I can't even figure out how Mac knows how to find it and connect to it.
Another strange detail is that when you try to open one of the applications that has a database in the CLOSET, the CLOSET connects immediately. I haven't tried to create a text file or something in the CLOSET and try to connect to it, but I will try that.

  • All Network Volumes set as Login Items open in Finder on EVERY startup

    ...after updating to 10.5.8
I have a Mac running on an otherwise all PC network. Before updating to 10.5.8 I had 5 network volumes set to "connect" on startup automatically (System Prefs / Accounts / Login Items). This worked perfectly and connected to these volumes silently without me having to ever worry about it. I didn't even have to check the "Hide" boxes.
After updating to 10.5.8 however, it became completely annoying. Now it still connects to these volumes, but opens up every single one in Finder upon every startup. That's 5 windows I have to close every time I startup my computer. It may not sound like the worst thing in the world, but mind you I have to log out and back in every day for work. Even checking the "Hide" checkboxes don't do anything.
Anybody experiencing the same problem? Anybody know a workaround or fix? My company has a rather large and complex network so staying connected to certain folders that I use is a must. Thanks.

Thanks to both of you. I guess the search I ran wasn't good enough as I didn't find the discussion that you posted.
One of the possible workarounds posted there was to use a third-party program that I found difficult to understand and use. Instead I took V.K.'s advice and made an AppleScript and then made that script launch at login. Works like a charm.
Only difference is that my AppleScript isn't located in the Utilities folder (10.5.8), instead I got to it by going to Applications / AppleScript / Script Editor.
sorry, my mistake on the location.
Then I made a script and saved it as an application. I then put that application in my Login Items (System Prefs / Accounts / Login Items).
If you're having trouble finding the mount volume (or server) address, here's how you can find it: If you are currently connected to the volume(s) that you want to use, left-click it and hit Cmd+I (or right-click, Get Info). Use the address next to "Server:" - That's it!
Hopefully Apple will fix this bug soon so people don't have to make AppleScripts just to make the OS work correctly.
I wouldn't bet on it for leopard. leopard development has stopped now after snow leopard has been released. historically, Apple only releases security patches for old OS versions once a new one comes out. Interestingly, this bug is present in snow leopard too! or maybe they don't consider it a bug and this is how it should work. one can make a case for this, I guess.

  • Preferences - Accounts - Login Items : rearrange fails, result is removal

This should be considered a bug report, but =i'm rather new to the apple community (user for a year, but only recently trying to help in forums) i am not aware of a legitimate bug-report tool for apple.
as the subject indicates, rearranging items in the Login Items preferences causes them to simply vanish from the list. I have about 8 items launch at startup, and some of them take a while to load (like iCal) and i'd prefer those to load at the END. the only workaround i've found is to remove them all, then add them one at a time in the order i want them to start up. this is clearly a bug.

    Hi Jared,
You're right, this should rather be considered a bug, as it used to work perfectly well in Panther...
Smart (?) reasons like "this is because of how launchd works" or "sending feedback requires some membership etc..." certainly do not look very "Macish", "user friendly", the way we were used to by Apple's legendary quality.
Here is the place where to send your feedback:
(and many users have sent the same comments about login items, since Tiger's launch last May...)
Thank you for helping with your own form!

  • "Shared" volume alias won't delete & causes SuperDuper to fail

Using SuperDuper to keep my backups. Problem: when it got to a certain file, it fails. Read the error log, turned out to be /var/.../spool/qmaster/E71DE744-5EA5E572/shared
I use Qmaster for Compressor, etc. The date stamp for the enclosing folder was around the time I was messing with some Qmaster settings, and thus probably created it then.
"Shared" is a volume alias that "can't be found". It won't delete.
How can I get rid of this busted volume alias?
    Thanks!

Yes, I'd appreciate the Terminal command.
Launch Terminal, then issue the command "cd /var". (This and all other commands should be entered without the quotes.) As you wish you can then use the command "pwd" to track your progress through the hierarcy and "ls" (that's a lower-case letter "L") to display what's in each level. Use another "cd" command (without a leading slash) to descend through each level. Once you've reached the level with that alias, issue the command "ls -l shared". The resulting line should show either the letter "l" (another lower-case letter "L") at the left end indicating that it's a "softlink" or an "@" symbol at the right end of the first group of characters indicating that it's an alias. It should also show a pointer to the unmounted volume at the far right.
Now try the command "rm shared". Given your earlier experience, that will probably fail. Then issue the command "sudo rm -i shared". You'll be prompted for your administrative password. Enter it and press <return>. The "-i" flag will then cause it to ask you to confirm whether you want to delete "shared". Enter the letter "y" (without quotes) and press <return>. It should now be gone.
I've put doubled spaced between command elements to improve readability, but the extra spaces aren't necessary.

  • Login Items Remote Volume, always open window on Boot

I've set up connecting to a drive on a network, and then dragged the volume into the Accounts/login items. So that everytime it reboots it connects to theses volumes, however each time it does it also opens a window for each of them. I have ticked the hide box next to them, but neither makes any difference.
    Thanks
    Matt

Yes, that is one way to do it. I usually make a shell script and package it as an application using Platypus.
To do so you would use a text editor (I prefer pico) to create a script file with the .command extension and make it executable. The syntax is as follows:
    mkdir /Volumes/yourvolume
    mkdir /Volumes/anothervolume
    mount_afp afp://username:password@server/yourvolume /Volumes/yourvolume
    mount_afp afp://username:password@server/anothervolume /Volumes/anothervolume
Of course you can leave out username:password@ and you can use mount_smb as well as other protocols.

  • Why don't network volume mounts (login items) configured in Profile Manager show up

Using Lion server and Lion clients.  Bound both the server and client to Active Directory and successfully got Profile Manager up and running.  All I really need from Profile Manager is the ability to mount network volumes so when the user logs in it mounts their home directory.  Please note we do not specify any home directory paths in AD.  I can login with my AD accounts on the Lion client and get other Profile Manager settings to work, however when I try and mount a network volume via login items nothing happens.  I am using SMB for this.  If I try to manually connect to the same path via Go -> Connect To Server it works fine.  For a simple test I even created a folder on one of my Windows servers D drive and shared it and within profile manager configured it as SMB://server/share and still nothing.  I tried setting it in the Dock section as well which I read in another post somewhere but all I get is a question mark.  I have tried all variations of server name, FQDN, ip address, etc.  I know it's not permissions since it works when I try it manually so am really at a loss here.  Is there any way to log what happens at login to see if it's even trying to mount the volume?  I do know the client is getting the profile since i can see it in system preferences but it never works.  Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

@bkma did you find any solution? i run into the same problem.

  • Losing Login Items

I have been having problems when I will shutdown into Boot Camp or just normal shutdown and then reboot my login items have been deleted from System Preferences so I have to reenter them all. It is very annoying as I have my system setup how I like it and I have to remember everything it was set to.
This happens very often, once every week or so.

Try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist file. Reenter your desired Login Items in Accounts preferences. See if that fixes the problem.
And, just as a precaution do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.2 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (5.x.x for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Cannot delete login item "You cannot change this item because it's managed by your system administrator"

We migrated a server (ldap and file serving) to some new machines, which have new names.  We've got all of the login and file sharing functionality working on the new machines, but wherever we have a mount of a share in the Login Items for a user, we can't get the old machine out of the Login Items.  It's not fatal, but it does make login take a lot longer because it has to fail first.
We can mount the share from the new server, and save THAT in a NEW Login Item just fine -- it's just that when you click on the old defunct one the minus sign is greyed out, and the mouseover says "You cannot change this item because it's managed by your system administrator."  There is a yellow triangle next to the item in the list.  Went into the user's ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginitems.plist and it's not in the file.  The /Library/Preferences don't have anything that looks like a plist of the right name.
Where do I find it and how do I get rid of it?

In response to ManishBhatt94's post today, I may have some information that may be useful to you. I called Microsoft's 800-642-7676 and spoke with a technical representative with questions pertaining to my particular issue. I also have friend that has the
same issue with her computer running windows 8. A representative from my ISP told me how to go into 1)Tools, 2)Internet Options, 3)Connections, 4)LAN settings and uncheck the proxy settings box. However after restarting or shutting down my computer it reappears.
It will also reappears while I play games on Facebook not allowing me continue until I go back into the proxy settings in LAN and uncheck the box AGAIN and AGAIN. A local owner of a computer repair shop told my friend that it was a virus. After speaking with
Microsoft today I was told the same thing/it was more than likely a virus on my personal PC at home. As most people likely do,  I use wireless internet in my home on the affected computer. Solution; as suggested by Microsoft rep was to have the virus
professionally removed either by someone or to use their remote service for a fee of $149 which comes with several guarantees and does not require you to re-install software or documents. I hope that my response was of some help to you. I also kept trying
to fix this problem but wasted a lot of time. He also suggested to Google the proxy problem to see if ANYONE has any alternatives to fixing this problem!

  • Blue Screen; Login Items

Excuse me if this posted twice by accident -  I was interrupted by an Apple temp out of order message...
My g5 iMac stalls at the blue screen upon startup. This machine was purchased new in 2005. It has a 500 GB HD. I've searched thru other posts and have tried many suggestions. It does run fine in Safe Mode. I have tried Guest Login, which has never been used, but that did the same thing. Could somebody take a look at my Login Items to see if any look suspicious, or at least tell me which ones I can delete?

Have you booted from your install disc and run Apple Hardware Test?  Have you run
    Disk Utility?
       1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
       2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
       3. Click the First Aid tab.
       4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
       5. Select your Mac OS X volume.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in safe mode.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below to select it:
    for k in /Sy*/L*/Ex*/{,.?}*.kext; do test -f "$k/Contents/Info.plist" && /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c "Print :CFBundleIdentifier" "$_" | egrep -qv "apple|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|CalDigit|HighPoint|hp-fax|JMicron|print|SoftRAID|stex" && echo $k; done
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered. You can do that by copying and pasting as well. Omit the final line ending in “$”. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    ls -1A /e*/mach* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts 2> /dev/null
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 3
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' 2> /dev/null
Remember, steps 1-3 are all copy-and-paste — no typing. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Mac Pro not seeing network login items

    Hello
I have seen similar mentions of this issue, but no satisfactory answers- I have a Mac Pro on a windows network. I have put several networked drives in the the login items so they will auto-mount, but it is totally random which drives mount and which don't upon login. Some of them are different partitions of the same physical hard drive!
Of course the bootcamp (win XP) side sees the drives properly upon startup. I never have problems mounting these drives when I go to mount them from the finder.
    Any Ideas?
    Thanks

Yeah, me too. I have an Xserve dealing out 6 volumes to three workstations. I just added a Mac Pro tower. The other machines (Powerbook G4, Quicksilvers dual-gig & 733) mount networked volumes at login as per a longtime setup. Only the MacPro won't mount them properly.
It displays a "Connection failed . . . blahblahblah" dialog. Click OK and most -- not all -- the intended volumes instantly mount.
I reckon "too fast for the network" is the problem. (I tried changing MPro's network address from DHCP to static IP; no dice.) Tomorrow I'll try an Applescript that will run at login, mounting the volumes after a short time delay.

  • Connect to Server Login Item

On my dual 2GHz Powermac, I set mine up by connecting to the server via AFP. Once connected, I drag the server from the desktop to the Login Items window. Has worked perfectly for me for about six months.
Now I'm setting up a new dual core 2GHz Powermac for a co-worker... Used the same procedure but get an error dialog saying "Connection failed...The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and try again." It's almost like the it's trying to connect before all the protocols are turned on. This only happens when I first start up the computer. If I start up, then log out and log back in to the account, it connects automatically just fine.
Can anyone enlighten me on my problem?
    Powermac Dual Core G5 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Thanks Kevin.
Appletalk is active and I did connect to the server using the method you described. The problem persisted. For a quick fix, I just turned off automatic login and gave her a blank user password. So when the login screen comes up, all she has to do is click once on her name. This seems to offset the timing just enough to allow the Connect to Server login item to work correctly.
This new computer must just be too fast for its own good!

  • Delay Login Items?

    Hi,
I have a computer (Com1) that's connected to another computer (Com2) via Firewire, in order for Com1 to connect to the internet. There's a folder (CLOSET) on a server that all the computers connect to on login. All the other computers in the school connect just fine to the folder, as I dragged the folder to the login items after I had connected to the server. The normal computers simply mount the volume CLOSET at startup, without having to connect to the server. However, the computer connected to the internet/network via Firewire starts up with the message that it can't connect to the server. I want to delay the login items to ensure that Com1 connects to the network before trying to mount the CLOSET.
I have tried using a third-party app (DelayedLauncher) to mount the CLOSET after 15 seconds, but it can't seem to find the volume, considering the CLOSET lives on the server that Com1 is not yet connected to.
Mac's Login Items finds the CLOSET just fine, so I'd like to find a way to simply delay or re-run Mac's native Login Items feature.
If this is not possible, is there a way to write a script to do the mounting the way the Mac remembers how to do it? The problem is that to connect manually, you must first connect to the server. Then you must select Guest. Then you must hit "Connect." Then select the volume CLOSET to mount. I can't figure out how to navigate through all the necessary selections in AppleScript.
    Thanks for any help provided.

  • How can I stop Preview from opening at startup even though it is not listed in my Login Items?

When I log into one of my user accounts in my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion), Preview is always open. The preview window itself is not open but the application name is active in the menu bar in the top left hand corner. The Preview item on the taskbar is also lit. Both of these indicate to me that Preview is running. However, I checked my Login Items repeatedly and Preview is not even listed. I also make sure that when logging out, the "Reopen windows when logging out" is unchecked. But Preview still always opens whenever I log into this particular user account -- it does not do it in any of my other user accounts. How can I fix this?

Thanks. I got to the bottom of it by checking Login Items. I had Flux, iTunes Helper, and Dropbox. I removed the first two from Login Items, leaving only Dropbox. However, when I rebooted and logged in, Preview was still open and Flux and iTunes Helper were back in the Login Items. To find out which application is the culprit, I looked under Flux's Preferences settings and disabled it from opening at login. I was intending to do it for every application until I find the culprit, but doing so to Flux solved the problem.
