Flummoxed by Microsoft - advice needed...

Hi all,
I need some help here. I recently purchased a Lenovo X200 notebook at auction. As is their want at these places, they removed the hard drive for 'data protection' purposes, so I basically purchased the laptop without a hard drive.
"No problem", I thought, I'll buy a new hard drive and reinstall Vista.
Here's the rub:
After buying the requisite hard drive, I tried installing Vista using an Anytime Upgrade disk matching the version with the license on the bottom of the Lenovo. All went fine until I tried to activate - no go.
After being passed from pillar to post by Microsoft, they told me theat the Lenovo license was OEM and I needed to contact IBM/Lenovo to obtain the correct installation media and would not activate Windows for me!
What's the best way around this? - can I get hold of a Lenovo Recovery Disk for reinstallation, or am I stuck with buying a retail version of Windows even though I have a perfectly good license stuck to the bottom of my machine?
Thanks in advance,
Geoff

Geoff, welcome to the forum,
You could try and get hold of an oem installation disc from somewhere as it should work with your license number. The easiest option would probably be to call Lenovo Support and request a set of recovery discs.
Usually the discs would be free during the warranty period, (hard drive died or recovery partition became corrupt), but in these circumstances there may be a charge for handling / postage etc. I can't say how much this would be, but in the US, according to forum posts, it seems to be around 40 USD + shipping and tax. ?? maybe 30 Quid??
Hope this helps

Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to open Microsoft documents in SharePoint 2013.
I recommend to Run the following PowerShell in OWA Server :
Remove-OfficeWebAppsHost # To Remove any restriction
Or
New-OfficeWebAppsHost -Domain <String> # To allow specific domain Name
In addition, you can allow OAuth via HTTP using the following commands:
$config = (Get-SPSecurityTokenServiceConfig)
$config.AllowOAuthOverHttp = $true
$config.Update()

• Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.

I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
• You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
• You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
• You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

• Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

When we apply the Microsoft-provided patch, is there any way to know it need OS reboot in advance ?

Thank you.
It is not about specific patch.
I would like to know how to identify the microsoft-patches need OS reboot or not , perhaps from information from Microsoft web site.

I am using InDesign CS5. I have a body of text which is ranged left with tabbed indents. My client now wants the copy to be justifed, keeping the tabbed indents. Help and advice needed please!

Hi
That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.
Hope that helps
Paul
PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

• Advice Needed - Migrating to Macbook Air

This is a multi-facited question and I am seeking advice most of all.
I have a 2008 iMac
I would like to retire it and use my 2011 Mac Air as my primary computer (With a Thunderbolt Display)
If I use the Migratiion Assistant - will I have to delete the files currently on my Mac Air?
Is there a way to merge them?
My concern is also space. With x free
I have 256 ssd hard drive on my air. with 80 free
The drive on the iMac is 320 Gig HD with 170 Gigs free
I have important programs such as CS6 on my iMacs drive - I would prefer not to have to reinstall them.
I have heard that there are issues with booting and updating an OS on an external drive.
I have considered using Super Duper to move my iMacs system to an external drive and selectively boot to it as needed.
Is that a good idea?
Any advice is truly appreciated.

A Basic Guide for Migrating to Intel-Macs
The Knowledgebase article Intel-based Mac: Some migrated applications may need to be updated refers to methods of dealing with migrating from PowerPC chips to Intel with the Migration Assistant safely. The authors of this tip have not had a chance to verify this works in all instances, or that it avoids the 10.6.1 and earlier Guest Account bug that caused account information to get deleted upon use of the Migration/Setup Assistant. However, a well backed up source that includes at least two backups of all the data that are not connected to your machine will help you avoid potential issues, should they arise. In event it does not work, follow the steps below.
If you are migrating a PowerPC system (G3, G4, or G5) to an Intel-Mac be careful what you migrate. Keep in mind that some items that may get transferred will not work on Intel machines and may end up causing your computer's operating system to malfunction.
Rosetta supports "software that runs on the PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor that are built for Mac OS X". This excludes the items that are not universal binaries or simply will not work in Rosetta:
1. Classic Environment, and subsequently any Mac OS 9 or earlier applications
2. Screensavers written for the PowerPC System Preference add-ons
3. All Unsanity Haxies Browser and other plug-ins
4. Contextual Menu Items
5. Applications which specifically require the PowerPC G5 Kernel extensions
6. Java applications with JNI (PowerPC) libraries
See also What Can Be Translated by Rosetta.
In addition to the above you could also have problems with migrated cache files and/or cache files containing code that is incompatible.
If you migrate a user folder that contains any of these items, you may find that your Intel-Mac is malfunctioning. It would be wise to take care when migrating your systems from a PowerPC platform to an Intel-Mac platform to assure that you do not migrate these incompatible items.
If you have problems with applications not working, then completely uninstall said application and reinstall it from scratch. Take great care with Java applications and Java-based Peer-to-Peer applications. Many Java apps will not work on Intel-Macs as they are currently compiled. As of this time Limewire, Cabos, and Acquisition are available as universal binaries. Do not install browser plug-ins such as Flash or Shockwave from downloaded installers unless they are universal binaries. The version of OS X installed on your Intel-Mac comes with special compatible versions of Flash and Shockwave plug-ins for use with your browser.
The same problem will exist for any hardware drivers such as mouse software unless the drivers have been compiled as universal binaries. For third-party mice the current choices are USB Overdrive or SteerMouse. Contact the developer or manufacturer of your third-party mouse software to find out when a universal binary version will be available.
Also be careful with some backup utilities and third-party disk repair utilities. Disk Warrior, TechTool Pro , SuperDuper , and Drive Genius work properly on Intel-Macs with Leopard. The same caution may apply to the many "maintenance" utilities that have not yet been converted to universal binaries. Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail are now compatible with Leopard.
Before migrating or installing software on your Intel-Mac check MacFixit's Rosetta Compatibility Index.

6. Transferring data with Setup Assistant - Migration Assistant FAQ
7. OS X Lion: How to use Migration Assistant to transfer files from another Mac
Because Migration Assistant isn't the ideal way to migrate from PowerPC to Intel Macs, using Target Disk Mode, copying the critical contents to CD and DVD, an external hard drive, or networking will work better when moving from PowerPC to Intel Macs. The initial section below discusses Target Disk Mode. It is then followed by a section which discusses networking with Macs that lack Firewire.
If both computers support the use of Firewire then you can use the following instructions:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions using Disk Utility.
2. Backup your data. This is vitally important in case you make a mistake
or there's some other problem.
3. Connect a Firewire cable between your old Mac and your new Intel Mac.
4. Startup your old Mac in Transferring files between two computers using FireWire.
5. Startup your new Mac for the first time, go through the setup and
registration screens, but do NOT migrate data over. Get to your
desktop on the new Mac without migrating any new data over.
If you are not able to use a Firewire connection (for example you have a Late 2008 MacBook that only supports USB:)
1. Set up a local home network: Creating a small Ethernet Network.
2. If you have a MacBook Air or Late 2008 MacBook see the following:
a. MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) and MacBook Pro (15-inch,

c. MacBook Air - Remote Disc, Migration, or Remote Install Mac OS X and

Copy the following items from your old Mac to the new Mac:
In your /Home/ folder: Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites folders.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder) /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder) /Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft.
Credit goes to Macjack for this information.
If you need to transfer data for other applications please ask the vendor or ask in the Discussions where specific applications store their data.
5. Once you have transferred what you need restart the new Mac and test to make sure the contents are there for each of the applications.

• URGENT: advice needed re Oracle SOA Stack

Astonished and perplex was I when I came across the following, a metaphor with Windows/Word is used here for a quick and better understanding.
Picture us at the beginning of this millennium, the following translation is used in this picture:
Oracle - Microsoft
Application Server - Windows
OC4J - DOS kernel
WLS - NT kernel
SOA Suite - Word
AIA - Spell checker
PIP - Grammar checker
We want to buy a word-processor and we are looking which version of Word we should use in our company. Microsoft says in a statement of direction that new versions of Windows will be based on the NT-kernel, the DOS-kernel is considered End-of-Life. The latest Word versions available are 10.1.3.5 for windows 98 (DOS kernel) and 10.1.3.5.1 for windows 2000 (NT kernel). Here we choose windows 2000 as the platform with the supported Word 10.1.3.5.1, in order to follow the same direction as Microsoft states. So far so good.
But now we would now like to buy the spell checker available for Word, Microsoft supports the spell checker for Word versions on Windows 98 and NT4 (all though NT4 only with spell checker, not the grammar checker), but it appears there is no supported spell checker for Word on Windows 2000 available!
Furthermore Microsoft tells us it will not support a spell checker for the supported Word on Windows 2000, only the new version of Word coming later this year for Windows XP will have a supported spell checker. But that's not all, even it appears there will be no spell checker supported for the (last planned) release 10.1.3.5 of Word for Windows 98, only for the older Word version 10.1.3.4 (patch 8 or higher) for Windows 98.
So in conclusion if we want to increase the quality of our work by using the AIA on top of the SOA Suite, we have to un-install SOA Suite 10.1.3.5.1 with Oracle Application Server 10.3 (WebLogic Server 10.3.1) and install the End-of-Life Oracle Application Server 10.3 (OC4J) with an older version of the SOA Suite (10.1.3.4 with patch 8 or higher).
We can not wait for the AIA & PIP's for SOA Suite 11 to be released end of 2010 because we need our SOA environment ready asap (yesterday).
This is the story I heard, now the question to you is how to advice this fellow to move on, what are the options and alternatives if there are any???
Thanx in advance,
Cheers,
John

Hi John,
I can totally picture your perplex since we are also in similar situation. The answer to your question really depends on what your immediate needs are. Is it spell checker or the grammar checker you need yesterday?
If you need spell checker then I think it's better to wait for few more months (Feb-Mar) and go with latest spell checker (AIA 3.0) on Windows XP/Vista/7 (WLS 10.3.2)
Or if you really need grammar checker now for your business needs then you have no choice to go with grammar checker (2.4/2.5) on DOS (OC4J) then look to upgrade to grammar checker 3.0 on Windows XP/Vista/7 later this year or next year. DOS or NT should not be a big deal with this option as you need to do some kind of upgrade to 3.0 grammar checker in future anyway.
Those are my 2 cents

I am very interested in SAP O&G! I have basic software knowledge (microsoft office etc). I want to learn SAP O&G, what kind of software exposure do i need. What path should i take that would best help me understand it. Are there prerequisites i need before I even attempt to learn it? I do not have any work experience (just internships and a couple summer jobs). I'm also currently enrolled in Supply chain management and logistics masters program. i also have a bachelors in petroleum engineering which is why i'm attracted to the idea of SAP O&G.
Any advice on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Dami,
Pleasing to know your interest in SAP and SAP IS OIL. As you mentioned that you are relatively fresh in the area of SAP, i would recommend you to start learning the basics of SAP first. Although this is not a pre-requisite, but it will definitely help you to start learning the specialized IS OIL solution. Otherwise it will be quite complicated to directly start with IS OIL.

• Advice needed on whether to upgrade or not...

I am trying to decide whether to upgrade my operating system from Mac OS X v.10.2.8 but am worried that some applications may not work if I do. I am using Adobe Photoshop 7, Microsoft Office X, Macromedia Dreamweaver MX... I haven't upgraded the OS yet because I'm not technically knowledgeable and it's all a bit over my head! One of the main reasons that I am considering upgrading is that I can't get certain podcasts because I can't get itunes u, because I can't upgrade my itunes because I need OS X v.3 or higher. And I have also noticed that Software Update hasn't found any updates since Jan. 2007 and I'm wondering if this is because there aren't any more updates available for OS X v.10.2.8 because it is old? I would be very grateful for any information or advice. Thanks in advance!

At this point with all of the current complaints of the OS X 10.5 release you might want to wait. Not only are there some issues with 3rd party apps, but currently there are enough issues with Leopard itself that I would suggest holding off until they fix most of the problems. I am finding it hard to troubleshoot if the problem is with the application or with Leopard itself. I figure that since Leopard can't even view JPEG files properly as thumbnails, in cover flow, or even in Preview properly, who knows what else is wrong with it right now.

• Dealing with frequent disconnected states (replication) - advice needed

Hello,
We have a very complex environment and I was wondering if anyone out there in the SQL community had ever dealt with, or had ideas on how to deal with, this unique sort of environment. We support two "homegrown" SQL Database applications over
a geographically dispersed area. The remote locations are currently connected via T1s. But, it doesn't end there... At the remote locations, there are vehicles that are often disconnected for, sometimes, months at a time, where folks on those
vehicles are entering and accessing data from the applications. We currently use SQL 2008 Merge replication, and, it works... but, it, lately, has had some issues. But, it DOES work... It just doesn't feel like the ideal solution. The
way we have it now, our main SQL DB is in our main datacenter... then, at each remote location, there is another SQL server that houses a copy of the database using SQL merge replication. Then, on each vehicle, we have servers that have everything on
them (they are domain controllers, SQL servers and web application servers) and, also on the vehicle is a laptop set up to access the application from that server over wireless. When the server on the vehicle can see the domain and the DB server at the
remote location, merge replication handles synching those two.
Does anyone have a better solution to this? I guess an example of our situation would be something like if NASA wanted to use our applications and they needed to be able to continue using the application even if they did not have internet or any, for
that matter, connectivity.
Thank you in advance for any advice/ideas.
Charlie

Merge replication was designed for this.
The question is where are you stumbling. You said it works, but now have some unspecified problems. What is the nature of the problems you are seeing? Keep in mind that merge replication is designed to be resilient to failures. I have some clients where
90% of their sync's fail, but the 10% that work replicate their data within the design parameters for the application.
I did have a client with 4000 subscribers hanging off one publisher. It worked well, but they decided to use XML diffgrams for their change detection and data transfer and run Oracle end to end. This change was driven by problems they were having with
their data integration requirements.
NASA would likely implement a custom solution using open source technologies, because that is their way of doing business (at least with the part of NASA I have worked with).

• Advice need - Tuxwdo/ Win2000

Hello,
We are in the process of porting our product (a high end repository)from
VMS to WIN2K/NT.We are not
very happy with COM+/MTS performance and flexibility so we are
thinking of replacing it with Tuxedo.
None of us have any experience with Tuxedo. Here are my questions:
1. We want to use the existing data access layer (‘Microsoft
embedded SQL) to access SQL7 server. Are
there any problems in terms of Tuxedo SQL facilities that would
prevent us doing this ? (Looks like
in NT you cannot enlist a distributed transaction with DTC unless
you use ODBC or OLEDB)
2. MTS provides a resource dispenser called Shared Property Group
used for
keeping/sharing variables between servers. Is there anything similar
in Tuxedo ?
3. Is there a Tuxedo clustering solution for NT/Win2k ?
4. How is the deployment made in NT/Win2k.Are there any tools
available ?
I know that some of my questions sound vague but I would highly
appreciate any thoughts or pieces of advice regarding TUXEDO/NT
development.

Hello Friend,
Pl find my cents for the port/migration:
1. BEA Tuxedo and SQL Server XA Interface
I remember reading a doc pointing out some limitationsof XA
with SQL server!!!.
These limitations are imposed by SQL Server XA library
and not by the BEA Tuxedo product. Pl check out thedetails
to analyse possible
limitations. It would be a better idea to call upBEA Customer/Technical
Support.
2. You can use ur existing data access layer (MS Embedded
SQL)
Tuxedo components can be developed using MS VisualStudio.
ESQL/C code base can be re-used to generate Tuxedoservers.
Your Application clients may need to be modified asthey need
to Tuxedo clients
to access and use the Tuxedo application. 3. Shared Property Group
I am not sure Tuxedo has any built-in way of achievingthis.
An implementation strategy
would be having a Tuxedo Server/Service maintain allur Global
Parameters.
Every other service uses this service to get and setthese
parameters.
(Pl devote sufficient time in designing this serviceas this
could become
ur system bottleneck)4. FailOver/Load Balancing/Clustering Solutions
Tuxedo provides built-in features to allow failoverand load
balancing. These are totally
configuration settings and invisible to applicationdeveloper.
That means, developer need not
worry abt these implentation issues at time of coding.
FailOver - Refer MP Configuration (UBBCONFIG)
Though the above feature of using MP is sufficientfor Machine
Failover too. But a
Clustering software is always recommended to ensurea high
availability application.
HP has one for its HPUX - MCGuard. MS Cluster Servershould
prove a possible candidate
in MS Windows platforms. You can also consider othersolutions!!!!
5. Deployment
A Tuxedo application deployment does not require anyother
tool except BEA Tuxedo.
But ofcourse, you may consider using the above mentionedClustering
solutions. And
don't forget ur database MS SQL Server...
(R u looking for this info or some other!!!!)Do write back incase u need more help in some specific
area.

Hello,

very happy with COM+/MTS performance and flexibilityso
we are
thinking of replacing it with Tuxedo.
None of us have any experience with Tuxedo. Here aremy
questions:
1. We want to use the existing data access layer (‘Microsoft
embedded SQL) to access SQL7 server. Are
there any problems in terms of Tuxedo SQL facilitiesthat
would
prevent us doing this ? (Looks like
in NT you cannot enlist a distributed transaction with
DTC unless
you use ODBC or OLEDB)
2. MTS provides a resource dispenser called Shared Property
Group
used for
keeping/sharing variables between servers. Is thereanything
similar
in Tuxedo ?
3. Is there a Tuxedo clustering solution for NT/Win2k
4. How is the deployment made in NT/Win2k.Are thereany

I know that some of my questions sound vague but I would

• Multiple device syncing advice needed and appreciated.

Hey everyone, happy holidays to everyone
I need some advice from you Apple lovers out there if you can spend some time replying. Thanks alot in advanced
My devices and current status
13" Macbook Pro with 8gig RAM with lion OS - Mosty used for word processing, DJing, low Internet usage now that i have Ipad, photo management, DVD ripping etc etc - i use this as my main device to organise emails and i purchase most apps, music and films on this device too
Ipad2 - Mostly for media content, web browsing, Youtube, playing games, FB, watching films. I use this device for fun not functionality or work related things
Iphone 4 - Usual phone usage, I use my phone as my main device for iCal, contacts, checking emails/messages on the move
2GB time capsule - brand new in the box as yet unused
Generally speaking i get confused or change my mind frequently about what to sync to which device, i started off using icloud but then things got confusing and i had things real messed up, multiple same contacts, apps on differnet device, differnet music on all 3 devices so now for the moment i think of my Macbook as the main device with both my iphone and ipad backed up to the Macbook. I then back up all of this on a regular 500g external Hard Drive.
So my questions are as follows
1. Can and should i use icloud to back up my devices and if so how should i do this effectivly
2. What syncing procedure would suit me best
3. How should i integrate Timecapsule to my devices
Any other suggestions would really be apreciated
Thanks again

The second part puzzles me - excuse me (but i honestly don't know) do both units give off a wifi signal of roughly equal 'amounts'?
Yes. Since both are connected by "Ethernet" each base station is its own wireless network and you have a few options on how best to configure them.
One of those options is to give both wireless networks the same Network Name (or SSID) so that you can, for example, "walk" a laptop from one to the other and stay connected. This is known as a roaming network.
If this is something that you don't desire or have a requirement for, then leaving them as two separate wireless networks would work just as well.
So what i am asking - i guess - is can i increase the distance the wifi signal reaches of the second unit (the time capsule - that is wired to the airport extreme)
To extend the wireless range of the Time Capsule (TC) you would need another 802.11n AirPort, like the AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). This should get a stronger signal out to the garden. Of course, it would really depend on the distance from the TC to where you would like to place the AXn to get the best results.
Let me know if you need help configuring the base stations.
