Font Conflict with Helvetica Neue

I used Helvetica Neue font for about 10 years. With Leopard, there is a conflict with an existing system Helvetica Neue. But I need my old Helvetica Neue. To solve this, I have followed the steps in that article: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6365831 but I still have conflict problem. For example, the font used in Gmail is not the good one and characters overlap. I use Suitcase Fusion.
What can I do?

Currently, the only way is to remove Apple's supplied versions of Helvetica. They have exactly the same internal names as the PostScript versions. Follow the instructions in section 4 of my article, Font Management in OS X, to see how to do that.

  • Problem exporting a PDF with Helvetica Neue

I am using InDesign CS6 on Mac OSX 10.8.4. I have a PDF with Helvetica Neue in it. When I export this file to a PDF my client claims that the text is jumbled and appears to be widely spaced/leaded. I've read it's an issue with Helvetica Neue as a system font, and found the following solution, but wondered if there was a simpler answer that does not involve messing with my system fonts.

I am sorry this is the simplest way if you need to use exactly that font.

  • Weird issue with .Helvetica Neue DeskInterface

Yosemite uses ".Helvetica Neue DeskInterface" as the system font. It shouldn't be accessible as a regular font; plain old "Helvetica Neue" is there for that. It should be impossible for me to format text in a document in the system font and yet it since at least December 2014 it has shown up in my list of fonts in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Specifically, it shows up as the following fonts:
    System Font Heavy
    System Font Medium Italic P4
    System Font Medium P4
    System Font Regular
    System Font Thin
    System Font UltraLight
Tipo de letra del sistema Fina
Interestingly, the Bold, Bold Italic, and Italic versions of the system font are not shown. Why the name of the Light version is appearing in Spanish is a total mystery.
So I know something's amiss but can't figure out what. So far, I haven't found any actual problems to be caused by this improper appearance of a system font among regular fonts but it makes me uneasy. I've cleared and rebuilt all font caches but it hasn't made any difference. I created a clean new user account but the behavior appears there as well.
Yesterday I did a clean install of Yosemite (wiped drive, installed OS, migrated settings from clone of HD) for unrelated reasons. Much to my bafflement, the .Helvetica Neue DeskInterface fonts are still showing up in Word and Excel.
Can anyone make any suggestions to help me figure this weird situation out?

The ones with "System Font" as part of their name are indeed part of the font family name of some (but not all) of the 10 fonts in the HelveticaNeueDeskInterface.ttc font package. Why they're showing up is another matter. I also installed Yosemite from scratch on an erased drive. Office 2011 does not show any of these fonts on my system. Which it shouldn't since the file name begins with a period. Are you using Office 2008? That may be the difference for that font. I can't test it right now.
Tipo de letra del sistema Fina appeared with 10.10.2. I was thinking maybe that one of the system fonts has an extra FOND entry which causes it to show up. But none that I can get a resource view of show it. That's where Lucida Grande CE and CY come from. They and the "normal" Lucida Grande are actually all the same font. The CE and CY FOND entries point to the exact same set of glyphs.
I have yet to find where Tipo de letra del sistema Fina is hidden. It is a different font, though. If you type anything in Word and then switch between this font and Helvetica Neue Light, the kerning is slightly different. So while they are very similar, it's not the same font. Basically, just ignore that one. I wouldn't use it in any project.
Do the HelveticaNeueDeskInterface.ttc fonts appear in any other app, or only Office? Word in the only place Tipo de letra del sistema Fina appears for me.

  • Font conflict with Mac OS

    Hi there
I hope this is relevant to this forum…
I'm having trouble with a version of Helvetica that seems to be conflicting with the Mac system fonts. So, the client sent us a packaged document with the fonts and all but we can't get them activated and recognised in InDesign. I suspect it's to do with a Suitcase / Mac OS conflict and not an InDesign problem, but I'm not sure where to look for help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! Sorry, things are pretty chaotic so I'll need a little more time to work through and figure it out, but that link looks like it'll be well worth reading through. The problem is happening on a colleagues computer, so I'm not 100 percent sure about software versions etc., but I can see how knowing that would be helpful.
So, the saga continues on Monday…
    I appreciate your help!

  • Khmer Unicode 2.0 font conflict with Adobe suite

I just downloaded Khmer Unicode 2.0.  After I did, the Microsoft Word doc that supplied a Khmer translation read correctly.  When I tried to copy and paste the Khmer into any Adobe apps (I tried 3, so have concluded it will be true of all) the font moved the letters around, deleted vowels, and generally messed up the phrases.  It did it the same way every time I tried new things.
I even tried copying the font into the Adobe FONT folder, and that didn't make any difference.  What could be creating this problem... I need to resolve it right away since I am trying to finish a project by the end of today.
I have 3 files to send someone, but don't see an option to attach them here
I am using Windows XP and Adobe Suite CS3
    I just found this:
you should already know the answer to this. btw it's not just khmer, it's any
    unicode encoded text.
first the usual suspects: what db driver? 100% sure you're using the correct dsn?
then this caught my eye: SET khmerReadWriteTest ='#form.text#'
uh either use cfqueryparam (good practice besides you turned on unicode in the
    dsn anyway) or unicode hinting.:
    SET khmerReadWriteTest=N'#form.text#'
But I have no idea where you do any of this.... Help please!

Is there a Windows machine on the network? It might be a conflict with non-Unicode symbols fonts used by them.

  • Hinting problems with Helvetica Neue

I seem to remember I asked this before and the problem was font hinting, but it continues to plague me and I'm wondering if anyone has any kind of workaround.
Helvetica Neue bold doesn't render properly in PS (or Illustrator) so that the x-height is getting miscalculated for some letters.
    See attached image for sample:
Above you can see where the 'v' is shorter than it should be (and the 'u' too). It drives me nuts - I like to use Helvetica Neue a lot and it looks terrible.
Create outlines cures it, but I need to keep text editable as I design, so that's not a good solution.
    I'm using CS5 on 10.6.5

I have just the same problem. I'm using Leopard 10.5.8. This occurs to me on InDesign CS4, not sure about Photoshop or Illustrator. When I zoom in close to the text it seems that this hinting disappears.
It is quite irritating and its difficult to make designs on screen when the letters looks so odd.
Im quite sure that this is only a screen problem and it will be shown properly on print.
Do someone have an answer to what may cause this? And if there is some way to solve it?

  • Helvetica Neue Pro -- Mac to PC font conversion (and vice versa)

I have a designer I exchange files with -- she's on a Mac, I'm on a PC (don't judge). Everything is seamless because we're both using Illustrator files created in CC. The one issue we're having is with fonts, specifically with Helvetica Neue Pro font family. They don't substitute automatically because the PC version names of that font family do not precisely match the names of her Mac Helvetica Neue Pro family. I have compatible (visually speaking) Helvetica Neue fonts (LT Std) that you can 'find and replace' each time either of us opens a file, but it's a pain. Is there a way around this without having to purchase the (very expensive) Helvetica Pro family OpenType fonts? And if I purchase that font family, will it even solve the problem? Or asked another way, is there a Helvetica Neue font family that is named the same in both PC and MAC versions?
Thanks for any advice or guidance.

  • After installing Helvetica Neue font onto my PC (Win7) it now appears almost everywhere online in the interface of websites?

I installed Helvetica Neue recently onto my PC and ever since that font is being used on most websites I visit, and even in the google website's troubleshooting settings. Ive also noticed the font used for the number of likes on a likebox on my website has changed and is all being displayed in Helvetica. It is very annoying and I have no idea how to resolve this issue. Here are a few examples:

Unless a web page uses a “web font” that it supplies itself, web pages typically provide a list of fonts, in priority order, of fonts to be used to render text. Typically, this list of fonts represents “system fonts” of MacOS, Windows, iOS, and Android - fonts that can be counted on being installed. Helvetica Neue is a MacOS system font that is not typically found on Windows systems. And even if a user licenses recent versions of Helvetica Neue OpenType fonts and installs same on Windows systems, they are in the “Helvetica Neue Std” family which would not match “Helvetica Neue” which is native to MacOS. Thus, I suspect that the Helvetica Neue you have installed on Windows is an older font offering.
    There are three issues here:
The first is that web pages provide a priority list for font usage. I suspect that the web pages you are seeing Helvetica Neue actually used on your system are requesting fonts in the order of Helvetica Neue and then Arial. The typical MacOS system would display the content with Helvetica Neue and the typical Windows system would display the content with Arial. Since you have Helvetica Neue on your system, you are getting rendering similar to what a MacOS system would have.
The second issue is that there is no way to force a web page to reverse the order of priority of the fonts it lists.
And finally, the third issue is that there is no way to hide a font selectively by application.
The only way you can avoid Helvetica Neue being used on web pages preferring Helvetica Neue to let's say Arial or any other font on its list for particular text rendering is to uninstall Helvetica Neue.
That having been said, other than perhaps personal type design preferences, are there any other issues with regards to use of Helvetica Neue for display of these web pages?

  • Helvetica Neue PostScript fonts not appearing in font list

Just curious if anyone else out there on a Mac (I'm on 10.5.8) is having trouble with Helvetica Neue (or any other System fonts) being accessable from the Fireworks CS5 font list?
I expect that I should see a whole slew of Helvetica Neue typefaces (PostScript) in my list (from 25 Ultra Light on up to 107 Extra Black Condensed Oblique) but instead all I get are the TrueType options that you see in the image below:
Also, Helvetica Neue appears in my font list twice... but both options give the identical TrueType font choices.
The crazy thing is that I can copy/paste a string of editable text from Photoshop and it will display the correct typeface AND maintain its editability within Fireworks CS5 but, the second drop-down menu appears blank. It's almost as if the system knows I have the PostScript font installed and available, but Fireworks doesn't know how to let me choose it.

I'm having this same issue. I can fix it by removing the system version (dfont) but then my browser won't show the font properly (outlines). I've got the whole creative suite and this is the only program that has this issue.
When I migrated from CS3 to CS5 this happened. Fireworks won't show the Post script version unless you remove the system font.
Adobe should use the same text/font handling throughout the suite.

  • Helvetica Neue Fonts

    Hi all,
I have a pdf which has Helvetica Neue Roman, Helvetica Neue Bold fonts. If I buy Neue Helvetica 55 Roman and Neue Helvetica 75 Bold fonts. would I be able to edit that PDF? I have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.
    Thank you
    Palak

    It is embeded Subset.
I do not have any of those fonts. I am going to order them. but still when I try to edit them by using touch up tool, it says " all part of the selection has no available system fonts. you can not add or delete using currently selected fonts."  Touch up tool works when I try to edit any PDF which has Times new roman or arial fonts.
Is there any other way to to edit that PDF with Helvetica Neue Roman fonts, even if I do not have them?
Some times I convert them to a word document and edit them but then it changes the whole document fonts and other things like check box fields, table lines, etc...
and sometimes I put the Text Box over the text I want to edit.
Thank you so much jacob for you time and effort to answer my questions.. I really appreciate that.

  • Font Availability/Possible Font Conflict Problem

I have InDesign CS3 on a Windows XP SP3 machine with the following problem: I have a document I am reprinting for one of my clients and it uses Helvetica Neue Condensed Bold font. It seems that this font comes into conflict, probably due to its name, with Helvetica Neue Bold. If I delete the latter from the Windows\Fonts folder, then in all other Windows programs, the Condensed Bold font shows up. However, *it does not* show up in InDesign CS3. Furthermore, the latter thinks it still has access to the Bold font even after it has been removed from the Windows\Fonts folder. I assume this may be due to InDesign CS3 accessing fonts from elsewhere, but there is nothing in the "Fonts" folder for the main InDesign program folder. I would be very happy is someone can tell me what exactly is causing this font conflict problem, and how I can work around it.  But mainly, I need to know where InDesign informs the user about where it looks for fonts (I can't find anything like the specification in Distiller that restricts where it looks for Windows fonts). Any help would be *most* appreciated, as I need to get this out in the next two days and must leave town early Wednesday.

Fonts for Indesign can be stored in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\Fonts and they will only be accessible by Indesign.  I've had problems with different versions of Helvetica too, but only when they were from slightly different families, or a mixture of types.  Now I've got the whole set it works fine, you may have to experiment with your mix of fonts.  Bear in mind too that fonts display differently in the Indesign font list than they do in Word for example.

  • Helvetica Neue not displaying properly

I have a problem with Helvetica Neue in Indesign - at certain zooms the characters are different heights. Think this might be called 'hinting'. It's also a problem when exported to PDF and looks awful. The only solutions seems to be to use a different font!

Hi, you can either use Cocktail on a Mac, which is simple, or there are manual details on how to do that here:

  • Helvetica neue in lion

I'm about to upgrade to Lion.
As a graphic designer I currently use Suitcase Fusion 3 to manage my fonts, and have always cleared out most system fonts and used suitcase to launch postscript versions of HelveticaNeue in place of Apple's system HelveticaNeue.
From what I read, this won't work in Lion - Address Book will refuse to launch.
Which means switching between postscript fonts and the dfont to use address book - which I use all the time while I work.
Has anyone encountered this? And is there a workaround? This sounds like a nightmare...

Helvetica Neue has been a system font since Leopard, I think, so you cannot change it just like that. The solution is to disable font protection, delete Helvetica Neue, install yours, then activate again font protection. For this purpose, do not use Font Book, just locate where it is, and delete fonts from the Finder. Helvetica Neue in Lion is a lot better than previous versions, first of all with a richer repertoire (fully covers European diacriticals for Latin-based languages + Cyrillic). Nevertheless, supposing you DO KNOW what you want, do like this:
    - open Terminal
    - type
    atsutil fontprotection -off
    press Return key
Make changes, then, in Terminal, run command in reverse order
    atsutil fontprotection -on
    Press Return
I repeat: I do hope you know what you do. Affecting system fonts may lead to fatal system collapse. Give a try to the new generation of Helvetica Neue included in Lion, maybe you will be satisfied with it as is.

  • Key Command for "Bold" / Helvetica Neue is "Bold Cndenced"...

As the title reads...with Helvetica Neue the command "shift+command+b" is set to bold in my preferences....but with this fond it changes it to condensed bold...as I've read this might be implanted into the font itself......anyone have some ideas how I can set a key command to bold this font?? I have tons of bolding to do .... =(
    thanks

@Emperor1212 – I bought an additional keyboard with a numeric keypad because of this and because of the problem that I cannot work the enter key to start a script from the JavaScript console in Acrobat Pro (and there is no button for executing code from that console!) without the numeric keypad.
    Hm, what else…
One could write a script for changing formatting of a selected text to a specific character style or a specific formatting.
That script could be assigned to a keyboard shortcut.

  • Strange character in facebook in Chrome. After messing with Helevetica neue

    Hi everyone,
I have this strange character in facebook in chrome.
First of all, before this problem arise, I was messing around with helvetica neue font to display properly in google chrome, and also I deleted many international fonts using monolingual program.
What is seems the problem? How do I get it back to normal.
    thanks.

    alimx wrote:

Those are characters from Apple's Last Resort Font.  It indicates you have deleted stuff you should have left there.  I recommend you not use Monolingual and similar apps.  The risk of serious damage to your OS is not worth any possible benefit.
