Forcing Epson driver to update to 3.5 (Universal Binary)

I was having problems with an Epson Stylus Pro 7800. When printing from Photoshop CS3, all of the custom printer options such as "Print Settings" and "Paper Configuration" were unavailable (they were there, but crossed out with a strikethrough). If I selected one of them, I was told that the Epson PrintSetting version 2.7 wasn't compatible. Presumably because I was on an Intel iMac and the drivers weren't Universal. A FAQ on Epson's site confirmed this. Non-Universal programs could still use the custom options.
So I downloaded and installed the latest drivers (3.5). The installation went fine, but the problem never went away. I looked in the System Profiler, and the drivers were still listed as 2.75.
I looked through the Library folder and found the drivers. Sure enough, the old driver (2.7) was still in:
/Library/Printers/EPSON/SPro7800.plugin
I found the new driver (3.5), split into two parts here:
/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinters/SPro7800.plugin
/Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinters/PrintingModule/SPro7800_Core.plugin
If you view the package contents, you'll see that the two new drivers together hold all the contents that were in the original one, so I made a new SPro7800.plugin that contained the combined contents. Especially important for this problem is the "PDEs" folder. To reflect the new location of these PDEs, I had to edit the PDEs.xml file found in the Resources directory.
Finally, I took out the old driver and replaced it with the new one I made. Upon restarting, System Profiler recognized the new version and Universal apps could now access the custom print options.
So anyway, that was kind of a pain, but I figured I'd post it here in case someone else has the same problem. But really, Epson needs to fix their updater.

An easier approach:
1. Delete the Epson folder and all of its contents. (All of the existing ones will be for non Intel Macs.)
2. Restart the computer
3. Install the OSX Intel Epson driver of your choice.

  • Epson R280 printer won't print after Apple Epson driver update

I have a 27" iMac running Mountain Lion. I use an Epson R280 printer to print directly onto CD/DVD media. Have used this printer daily for over three years. After an Apple Epson Driver update, I get a 'communication error' message and cannot print. Uninstalled and reinstalled printer. Power cycled printer and rebooted iMac. No Change. Hooked up same printer to my MacBook Pro running Mavericks and printer works. Ideas?

Thanks, Eric. I had tried that previously, but had no luck. I would add the printer back in after Reset, and it still didn't work. The real key step which I found from a previous solution was taking the existing print drivers in Library/Printers/Epson and trashing that folder and then emptying the trash. With those drivers gone, when I rebooted and then powered up and added the printer, Apple prompted me to download new drivers, and 'Voila!'. Back up and running. Thanks much.

  • Epson Printer Driver/Apple Update Conflict?

The Apple Epson Driver 2.15 update (Snow Leopard) was in conflict with the installed Epson  Printer Driver on Epson WF-2530 causing a permanent printing failure. Epson reported that "their staff was working with Apple  Staff" to eliminate the conflict. Epson Technicians warned not to install 2.15 or I would lose printing capability again. Recently an Apple Epson Driver download was announced (2.15.1 @30.9 MB). Does that eliminate the problem? Should it be downloaded?

If I were in your position I would not rush to download the new update. Presumably it was intended to address the conflict, but if you restored your printer to operating condition and it is now working acceptably, I'd be inclined to let others be the guinea pigs.
Determining the reason for the update will be difficult or impossible. Apple generally provides a brief, though not necessarily complete, list of problems OS X updates are intended to address, but such information is not generally provided for printer driver updates: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1398

  • OS X 10.5.2 Epson Driver Update and 1.4.1

I've experienced the problems of Lightroom, Leopard and Epson, and managed to get to passable prints having performed a full system restore a couple of weeks ago!!
Now everytime Software Update runs it offers an 'Epson Driver Update'. Have other people installed this? I'm a little worried about updating and going back to poor print quality.....
Also having seen a couple of other posts reporting problems, what are people's experiences with 1.4.1 and Epson?

I don't what all it updates; it's in an installer that gets run auto if you say o.k.
It regressed the 3800 driver, but reinstalling the beta again was easy enough as I keep printer driver installers handy.
Calling it an update for some printers is misleading, and sorry I don't know how you could find out except by installing it- which I don't recommend if everything is working all right.

  • Latest update to epson driver

Since the Epson drivers were updated earlier this week, the printer is not resetting after the completion of the document. In order to print again, I must turn the printer off and on again.

    Hello Jerrila,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and I believe I have dug up a helpful resource to troubleshoot your printer. Here is an article called OS X Mountain Lion: Troubleshoot a USB printer, you can find it here: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11140?viewlocale=en_US.
I recommend the part at the bottom:
    Replace a corrupted printer queue
If none of the previous solutions work, the printer’s queue may be corrupted.
In Print & Scan preferences, delete and set up your printer again.Edit your list of printersSet up a printer
If you still can’t print, reset the printing system. This removes all printers from your list of printers, deletes information about completed print jobs, and deletes any printer presets.Reset the printing system
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • OSX 10.7 sporadic freezes (because of Epson driver?)

    MBP 17", SSD 256, OS X 10.7.1, Epson driver version 5.2
The display often freezes wenn using the epson printer AL-C1900 (Network-Printer) in different appliances for printing (the print-job done by the printer is ok). Nothing is working after this event, even the appliance-managing-task (cmd+alt+esc) doesn't work. Only the emergency-stop by pressing the on/off-butten for a while and restarting the machine helps. But sometimes, in the same situation, the printing process workes very well.
The installed Epson driver is the latest version from apple recommended.

Have you tried checking with Epson to see if they have a newer driver yet?  Sounds like you need an updated printer driver, and Epson is the only one who can provide that.  Unfortunately, "wait until Epson releases an update and don't print until then" is not much of a solution, but the only other one is to downgrade to an older system that their driver will work with, and that's a lot of work and inconvenience.
BTW, note that every time you force restart your machine, you may be damaging data on the hard drive.  You need to repair it, or at least verify it, with Disk Utility every time that happens.  Hold down command-R while starting up to enter Lion's recovery mode, then use Disk Utility from there to repair the hard drive.

  • Epson printer software update 2.14 killed my printer

On Mac OS X 10.7.5  - after epson printer software update 2.14 my 9890 started printing images "smeared" out of register across the page.
Over an hour with Epson tech ended with trashing the /Library/Printers/EPSON folder and downgrading to the previous driver. This fixed the 9890 but left my R1900 disabled. R1900 software is no longer available as a stand-alone install - only through Sofware Update. But that will kill my 9890.
Epson tech said it's Apple's fault and they need to fix it.
    Apple, where's the fix?

I had the same problem and after untold hours working with Apple & Epson we got to the problem with the Apple software update 2.14.  I was told I had to decide if I wanted my 9900 to work or my office printer (Workforce 610) to work. I was incredulous that I would be forced to make this choice but of course chose to get my 9900 back up and running.  This  fix was given to me 3 weeks ago tomorrow and we still no resolution from Apple / Epson?  Are you kidding me? I am considering throwing my Epson 610 in the trash and buying another brand of office printer so I will have no conflict with my 9900. Seems like a pretty stupid solution I must admit.
I called Epson back again on Friday and got a horrible run-around. The guy from the Pro Graphics group (techs for the professional series printers) insisited I needed to talk to the consumer printers group. Once I got to them it was clear they had no clue about this issue. I left the phone totally frustrated and angry.  I ended up emailing a very capable guy from the Pro Graphics group I had worked with 3 weeks ago and he was nice enough to reply. The answer however was there is still no fix to the Apple update.  At t his point I am not sure how to know if the update has been fixed. The message I get from Epson is just keep checking back. The problem is that it seems few at Epson are aware of the problem so you have to go through a long explanation only to hope  you find someone that is aware.
Nothing like running a printing company and telling your customers you cannot print their invoice because your printer doesn't work!  Thanks Apple for the quick fix on this!

  • Epson Driver Problem with Mavericks?

After hooking up a new Epson-XP610 printer with my Mac Mini, Printers and Scanners in Mavericks System Prefs shows two printers -- one labeled as an Epson-610 Series with Driver version 1.0 and the other labeled Epson_XP_610_Series_2 with Driver version 9.14. The first one appears to be a wi-fi version since it has a trimmed down "lite printer utility" that directs me to a Bonjour page on Epson's web site, which tells me there is no software or firmware update for that printer. The second one has a more elaborate printer utility and appears to be the one that's hardwired to my computer. Epson's Software Updater tells me the Series 2 printer should be using Driver version 9.17 and the Mavericks page on Epson's web site also tells me I should be using Driver  version 9.17 for the printer while relying on Apple's software updater  for the scanner driver used by Image Capture. But when I download the 9.17 driver and click "install" the driver version shown in the printer utility still shows up as 9.14.  Why is Mavericks refusing to load the updated printer driver and forcing me to use the old 9.14 version?

My theory with the printer problems that people have with Mavericks is that the printer manufacturer applications and "utilities" are not very good. I think that the printer manufacturers still think of the Mac market as being of less value than the PC market, and as such, the software engineers that design their Mac software are not Rhodes scholars. Not the best and brightest. Kind of like Al Qaeda: they do not assign the smartest guys to be the suicide bombers.
    Try this:
Go to Applications > System Preferences > Printers and Scanners
Control-click on one of your printers and select "Reset printing system..."
This will delete all your print drivers.
Do a factory reset on your printer. You will have to refer to your printer's manual for how.
This is very important: uninstall all other printer manufacturer software, applications, and "utilities".
If you connect to your printer via WiFi, you will have to reconnect it to your network and enter your network password.
Go back to Printers and Scanners and let it download a print driver from Apple.
If this does not work then you may also have to reset your wifi network (if you print via WiFi) by powering everything down (modem, router, computer, printer) and then powering each item up. Power them up in that order (modem, router, computer, printer), and let each power up fully before going on to the next.
The same idea also works with misbehaving scanners: remove the printer manufacturer scanner apps and use Image Capture instead; let Image Capture download the scanner driver from Apple.

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:
Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.
If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.
Reinstall the driver directly from Epson's website.  If you are still having problems after the reinstall, you should contact Epson tech support for a solution and/or work-a-round.

  • Epson printer software update 2.11 crashing my computer!

    Hi there
Thanks in advance for the help. I have been trying for a few days to download and install the latest software update called "epson printer software update 2.11"
It will not finish installing and ends up crashing my computer. I have OS 10.7.4.
Additionally my Epson Stylus NX420 will not print from my computer. I get an unknown error message. The printer does work however. I can make copies and scan. The Network diagnostics from the printer states that there are no issues.

  • More software forcing Printer driver to use ColorSync

Now Canon's DPP 3.5.1 shows up and it is doing the same thing as LR2.1 and PSCS4.
Color Matching selections grayed out and forced to Colorsync.
We know that it affects some Epson and Canon printers/drivers. Even postscript laser printer and Adobe's PDF printer.
How many others is anybodies guess.
I sure hope there is a fix for this in 10.5.6

Trying to add our Epson 4800 after update 10.8.3 our iMac is shutting down and so is our Mac Book Pro. Any advise??

Thank you Linc. We just half solved our problem. The update 10.8.3 has a bug for using our printer with a special kodak proback firewire cable by don't giving a support. So we skipped the old way by downloading a new driver,
using an USB cable and adding our printer again and it works. The reactions of collegues and those on the Apple site showed us that the update 10.8.3 is having a major problem.

  • Epson 740 Inkjet won't print from Epson Driver!

    Hi All,
I've just recently upgraded to Tiger, from Jaguar, and all was well...until today! My colour printer is an Epson Stylus 740 and it was printing perfectly yesterday but now the all jobs are "Stopped"!
If I click on "Start Jobs" the progress bar appears then, after a couple of seconds, vanishes and I'm back to "Jobs Stopped" with the file still in the print queue. That's it! No other indication of a fault or problem.
I have now configured the printer via Gimp Print (V5.0.0) and it works fine. So the printer is ok but I'd like to use the Epson driver as I'm used to it and know how to get the results I want.
If this was OS 9 I'd suspect a corrupted file in the spool folder but, even though I've used OS X for years, I don't even know if there still is a spool folder! I certainly can't find one.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

There are tons of posts on similar problems in this forum. Do a search for stopped jobs and you'll see. There are a lot of suggested fixes, it sounds like some work for some people and not for others. Also, although it sounds like it's usually Epson printers, it's not always. And it's all different models. I have an Epson Stylus CX6600. I haven't had a chance to try all the fixes yet, but one that did work for a couple months for me was this:
Before printing, go into your application's "Page setup" option and make sure that the "Format for" says your printer and not "Any printer." I'm not sure why this works but it's even on the Epson tech support website in their troubleshooter. You will have to do this for every application and it quit working for me after I updated to 10.4.5, but maybe it could be a temporary fix for you as well.
Please post if you come up with a more permanent solution!

  • CS2 printing broken with new Epson driver and/or 10.5.5?

I've been using InDesign CS2 for fine art printing for the last year (CS3 printing was totally broken) to and Epson R2400. Originally, I had been using Photoshop, but I found printing from CS2 gave the same results and I had better control over crops, etc. within a specific framed size. InDesign CS2 and Photoshop gave the same great color results. Then, this last week, I updated both my OS (from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5) and my Epson driver (as 10.5.5 wouldn't see my R2400 via FireWire). Now, when I print from CS2, I get crappy prints. Not as crap as CS3, but WAY crappier than Photoshop.
Has anyone else experienced this? Such a bummer!!!!
I wonder if InDesign CS4 is broken too? Anyone know if they've fixed the printing issues in CS4 (not holding my breathe as I'm sure they were rushing to get CS4 out the door just as much as they were CS3).
    Thanks,
    Kristin.

Got it working again. All I did to fix it (and match the same output from Photoshop) was, in the driver, under Color Matching, I selected "Epson Color Controls" (and then turned off color management in Printer Color Management).
Not sure what has changed, but this worked for me. Haven't tested in InDesign CS3 or CS4 yet.

  • How do I remove Epson Printer Software Update 2.15.1?

I have two Epson Perfection 1670 Scanners. Epson Printer Software Update 2.15.1 installed today on my new MBP, and both scanners immediately stopped working. A hard reboot does not solve the problem. I had the same trouble on two other Macs running OS X 10.7 after similar software updates. The scanners still work on computers without the software updates, and on computers [including a G4 iMac] with earlier versions of OS X.
The symptom is this: I try to import a scan from Preview, and the scanner light starts, but the motor stalls at the start of a scan, and I receive the message 'Scanner is warming up', and then nothing more happens. If I try re-starting the scan, I have a message telling me that the scanner reported an error.
How can the software update be removed, and the previous software be restored? Will Time Machine do it? If so, then what needs changing, please?

    I was told by Epson:
If you have a Time Machine setup and a restore point saved for your computer that is earlier than the day you performed the update, Time Machine should take care of the problem.  It is meant to restore your computer to the way it was at the time of the restore point.  If you have any more detailed questions about time machine, I would suggest contacting Apple support.
Another option is to install an older version of the ICA driver.  If you would rather do this,  reply to this message and let us know so that and we can have the file uploaded and then send you a link to download it.
I opted for the second solution (the previous ICA driver) and they sent "ICA v530".  This too didn't work.
What DID work was manually replacing the current driver (version 5.6) with a version of the driver from my other computer. . . this computer had version 5.11 of the driver.
    To find the driver:
go to Library -> Image Capture -> Devices.  Go to file name EPSON Scanner. THIS is the driver.
"Get Info" will tell you what version you have.
What is interesting/odd is that all my computers are updated by Apple's "Software Update". Yet only one computer (attched to the scanner via USB), had the problematic driver version 5.6.
    Hope this helps.
