Frequent network interruptions

Our Sun Blade workstations running Solaris 5.8 have been experiencing network interruptions, resulting in unavailable internet service except intranet. PCs on the same network appear ok somehow. The interrupt lasts a few minutes occasionally. When it occurs, the on-campus workstation also becomes unaccessible from off-campus. The interrupts do not occur consistently from machine to machine. The network used to be okay. Any help is appreciated.

the same question to another forum on the same original day.
There was another contribution over there.

Hi, one of agents received incoming call and his call dropped within few seconds and error on CTIOS agent desktop was "CTI Warning: call has failed because of network interruption". I investigated and got info from icm database schema that this error is 26-U-Abort and caused due to network congestion. Network team shown the logs and no error regarding network found. What else could be the reason?

    mhchiang,
If you have multiple systems that all show the same symptoms,
then it is probably not a problem in the computers.
You may need to investigate the rest of your network hardware
    and your campus network software.
Your campus network administrators may have made some recent changes.
Ethernet switches may have power supply problems, or they're getting old.
Firewall software may heve had recent changes to its configuration.
If the cabling goes over long distances, from building to building,
there may be damage to wiring.

    Hi rosegirlmom,
Does this only happen when the router is reset?
Why is the router getting reset?
Have you tired using a different router to see if this stops the issue?
     Restore Network Defaults:
On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon ( ).
    Touch Settings .
Touch and then slide your finger up on the display to scroll to Restore Network Defaults .
    Touch Restore Network Defaults .
Touch Yes to confirm your selection.
Restart the printer, and then connect it back to your network.
You may need to run the Update IP address icon located in the HP folder in All Programs to update the computers with the new IP address assigned to the printer.

  • Folder Re-Direction And Network Interruptions During Folder Re-direction

    Good morning,
If a network interruption occurs (network connection is lost) when folders and files are being re-directed to a network share, will data be lost?
For example, folder re-direction has been configured for multiple users (30) on their workstations, and the folders begin to re-direct to the specified network share. About 10 or however minutes into the re-direction process the network goes down. Will the
files and folders that were being re-directed to the network share be lost forever?
Please explain how network interruptions affect folder re-direction? Will there be any data loss? How does this work?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi AquilaXXIII,
User settings and user files are typically stored in the local user profile, under the Users folder. The files in local user profiles can be accessed only from the current computer, which makes it difficult for users who use more than one computer to work
with their data and synchronize settings between multiple computers. Two technologies exist to address this problem: Roaming Profiles and Folder Redirection. Both technologies have their advantages, and they can be used separately or together to create a seamless
user experience from one computer to another. They also provide additional options for administrators managing user data.
Folder Redirection lets administrators redirect the path of a folder to a new location. The location can be a folder on the local computer or a directory on a network file share. Users can work with documents on a server as if the documents were based on
    a local drive.
The ability to redirect more folders in the user profile folders than in earlier Windows operating systems. This includes the
Contacts, Downloads, Desktop, Favorites, Documents, Links, Music, Saved Games, Searches, Pictures, and Videos folders.
Data that is stored in a network folder can be backed up as part of routine system administration.
If you use Roaming User Profiles, you can use Folder Redirection to reduce the total size of your Roaming Profile and make the user logon and logoff process more efficient for the end-user.
Offline File technology is supported by Folder redirection.
If you've ever needed to access important files stored in a shared folder on your network but couldn't because your laptop was not able to connected from the network. With offline files, you can access copies of your network files even when your computer
isn't connected to the network. You just choose the files (or folders) on your network that you want to make available offline.
Windows automatically creates a copy of each file on your computer.
These copies are called offline files. You can work with these files even when you're not connected to the network, and the next time you are able to connect,
Windows will automatically sync your offline files with the original files in the network folder.

    D. Wu

  • Steps to diagnose frequent streaming interruptions

I have an AppleTV 2, to which I frequently try to stream movies / TV shows from both a MacBook Air and an iPad.  Since a few months (hard to pinpoint when the issue started), we're getting frequent interruptions, where the screen simply goes to black and then jumps to the menu.  When playing from the MacBook, iTunes will typically give a spinning beachball when this happens (perhaps trying to restore the signal? unclear).
    Steps we have already taken:
    - We've checked the wifi signal strength on the AppleTV using the built-in check, which gave good signal.
    - We checked the wifi signal quality and consistency on the MacBook using iStumbler (after reading other posts here), which seems to show consistently good signal, no interruptions
    - We've synced a number of our movies from the MacBook to the iPad and played them from the iPad - no difference, we get interruptions no matter what the source device is
    - We gave the AppleTV an ethernet connection instead of wifi, which did nothing to improve the problem
    - We switched from playing the content on the macbook with airplay streaming to the AppleTV, to letting the AppleTV access the content through the MacBook's home sharing library - this seems to significantly improve the situation when playing from the MacBook, but doesn't help when streaming from the iPad.
I'm wondering what next steps we can take to try to diagnose what is going on?  Any tips appreciated.  All devices are running their respective latest OS.

Sounds like you already have diagnosed the problem.  Streaming video over WiFi rarely works well even when you have the high end WiFi equipment needed to support it.  In this case you are doubling the WiFi load by trying to stream from the iPad to the hub and then another WiFI connection hop to the ATV.  Stick to just using the ATV menus to select the content you want to watch.  That way there is only one connection instead of two concurrent ones.  You will also save your self a lot of headaches if you keep ATV connected via Ethernet.  If you want to use your IPad you can get the remote app and use it to control the ATV means to select the content you want.
    - We've checked the wifi signal strength on the AppleTV using the built-in check, which gave good signal.
That does not actually tell you anything.  It is just the strength of the radio signles but what you really need to know is the volumn of data you are getting across your connection and the number of dropped packets.
    - We gave the AppleTV an ethernet connection instead of wifi, which did nothing to improve the problem
But was the source device (iPad, MPB) still connected via WiFi?  Try it with just the ATV and the source device on Ethernet.

  • Network Interruption when Laptop connects

    Hello All
    - I have WRT54G V5 with firmware 1.00.6 connects to ADSL Sagem modem
    - 1 PC with Sitecom network adapter running on WIN XP Pro connect to Router through WAN
    - 1 vaio laptop with builtin Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG version 9.0.4.17 running on WIN Home connect to Router though WAN
The problem occures while I have my pc connected to the router, when I try to connect my laptop to the router the whole network iterrupts and it connects back automatically.
So I am confused why this interruption on the network when i try to connect my laptop to it. The connection goes back to normal when both PC and Laptop reconnect to the network.
I'll be glad to provide more info about the situation, but maybe someone could fill me up on why this is happening.
I have tried manual DHCP and automatic and still the same problem.Message Edited by ZinG on 08-21-2006 03:55 PM

Don't think it is the router's problem.
I've just found this symptom on Intel's website.
    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-022509.htm
But I am not sure if it applies to your Laptop, since it has a different Intel Pro Wireless version. But you can probably tell it is a laptop problem since it only occues from the laptop and not from any other Computers you try to connect.
Maybe I am wrong but you can tell us what is your Wifi adapter on your Laptop?

  • Portege R500 - Constant network interruptions

I have a Portege R500 with Windows XP (SP3 now, but same problem with SP2, and same problem before and after complete reinstall), and the network keeps getting interrupted. This is hopelessly irritating, because I work a lot over ssh connections, and almost every time the connection breaks I lose some work. The best case scenario is that I have to log in again and continue where I was.
This happens regardless of whether I am using WLAN or cabled network, and it happens regardless of where I am - home, office, internet cafe, whatever, so it is not my connection. The network is interrupted every 15-30 minutes, and sometimes it happens as I am typing or loading a page, while other times it just appears to happen. It's usually easy to tell when it happens, because all ssh connections instantly hang, all my messenger connections are broken, and Outlook complains that it has lost connection to the Exchange server. Outlook and messenger connections don't realise anything is wrong before the connection actually starts working again, which probably has something to do with TCP or ICMP messages finally getting through, but it is actually strange that TCP doesn't just handle the problem transparently - the physical connection is never broken for long.
I figure this probably has something to do with power saving, but I have been unable to resolve it by tuning power saving settings. Also, I have the same problem regardless of whether the laptop is powered or not.
It is (probably?) not a hardware failure, because I do not have the same problem under Ubuntu Linux, and memtest does not report any memory errors. (Speaking of which, is there a memory testing tool or self test tool built in to this laptop?).
Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have tried calling the local support number twice, but there's not much help to get there.

OK, my problem has now solved itself. I have had some trouble with F-Secure Internet Security 2008 (a process called fssm32.exe running for ages, using up to 400MB RAM, spending my battery quickly and making my computer _extremely_ slow for hours). I gave up and bought yet another AV-solution from AVG. After uninstalling FSIS2008 yesterday and installing AVG, I haven't had an interruption as described in my first post. I've had ssh connections up for hours, even when leaving the computer for lunch (which never happened before), outlook doesn't complain, and messengers stay logged on, so I now consider this problem to be solved.
    Thanks for your feedback.

  • Airport Extreme Intermittent Network Interruption when Downloading Large Amounts of Data.

I've had an Airport Extreme Base Station for about 2.5 years and have had no problems until the last 6 months.  I have my iMac and a PC directly connected through ethernet and another PC connected wirelessly.  I occasionally need to download very large data files that max out my download connection speed at about 2.5Mbs.  During these downloads, my entire network loses connection to the internet intermittently for between 2 and 8 seconds with a separation between connection losses at around 20-30 seconds each.  This includes the hard wired machines.  I've tested a download with a direct connection to my cable modem without incident.  The base station is causing the problem.  I've attempted to reset the Base Station with good results after reset, but then the problem simply returns after a while.  I've updated the firmware to latest version with no change.
Can anyone help me with the cause of the connection loss and a method of preventing it?  THIS IS NOT A WIRELESS PROBLEM.  I believe it has to do with the massive amount of data being handled.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • Frequent  Network Disconnects - VL600

I am noticing that my connection fails fairly randomly but too often.   The failure can occur from seconds to eight hours after a connection.  Typical disconnect after one hour or so.    This happens in both New York City and Boston.   I am not mobile at these times -  hotel rooms mostly.   If this continues I probably won't maintain my subscription to the 4G service since I can use the WiFi hotspot feature of my smartphone (on another network).

    Modem or router?
How connected - ethernet or USB?

  • Solution to "unable to resolve host" and frequent network drops

Like many, I just purchased a shiny new HP Touchpad 32GB.  Updated the firmware to the latest version, enjoy it's web browsing capabilities and some of the apps.
However, like many, web browsing often coughed or sputtered and would freeze often during network operations.  Web sites like Google or Bing would often hang and become useless.  A Google search of "Unable to resolve host" showed that I wasnt' alone.
The 'solution', or so it seemed, was to reset the network by toggling airplane mode.  But doing this every 5-10 minutes, or more often, was quite frustrating.  Also, other applications, such as Spaz HD for Twitter were really lethargic.
This was all a problem until I changed the MTU on my wireless router from the standard 1500 to 1300.  Rebooted the modem, all is now well.  "And there was much rejoicing...."
After this change, haven't had the need to toggle the Airplane mode even once.  Spaz HD runs much quicker, Google & Bing no longer lock up, complex pages such as the DailyCaller.com or Redstate.com no longer time out and work properly.
I would be curious to see if others who are having the same problem, can make a similar change, and if helps them solve this issue.
Post relates to: HP TouchPad (WiFi)

For me, it turned out to be somewhat different - my home wireless was working fine with several different devices/OSs, but it seems that WebOS stopped falling back to any DNS servers beyond the first one.  Whereas other devices (android phones, linux laptops, etc) still resolved DNS fine using the secondary/tertiary DNS entries, WebOS starting giving me the "unable to resolve host" error.  So I changed the (primary) static DNS entry on my wireless router to one of the Google public DNS servers (8.8.8.8) and now WebOS is happy again.  The only thing that changed for me (on the tablet) was enabling usbnet just to check it out, and even after I disabled usbnet, I still had the name resolution failures.  Go figure...

  • Frequent Network Lost Notification after upgrade to 3.1.3

I bought my iPhone in Saudi Arabia, there isn't an Apple Store here, not really too much technical support at the service provider I bought the phone from. I updated my phone yesterday to 3.1.3 and since then, I can't go through one hour without a network lost notification. I've had signal issues earlier as well, but they weren't nearly as bad. When I'm connected to WiFi at home through my phone, there are no network issues, for hours together, as soon as I disconnect, the notification is there again. Most people complain that they can't get through to my phone when they try calling. I have been using the phone in the same places as I was before the update.
    HELP!

I have this same problem and I am in America... I have random disconnects' and in my case it is WiFi disconnects. I never had them before 3.1.3.
    Any possible solutions for this??

  • Snow Leopard Not Correctly Reconnecting to SMB Shares after Network Interruption

Occasionally, my wireless connection will drop for a fraction of a second. When it comes back up (almost immediately), everything works as normal on my MacBook (Snow Leopard) except for the connections to the shares I have on my Windows 7 box. It shows the root folders and items as it should, but the folders are empty (and even labelled "no items"). Ejecting and attempting to reconnect doesn't work at all (Finder simply hangs). And to make things stranger, the drive I have shared from my Linux box (via SMB also) does actually reconnect properly. This also happens if, for some reason, I need to reboot my Windows box. The only solution I've found is to reboot the Mac. Which, as you might imagine, is a pain if you're in the middle of something. Any clues as to how to address this?
    Thanks,
    Sam

Renew your lease. Also try resetting the IP's. And unplud the router for a bit and restart it.

  • Hyper-V Massive networking interruption on host machine

    Hello everyone !
I have a little game server running on an Hyper-V Linux, which is hosted on a Windows Server 2012 R2 (I only have remote access on this machine).
To play on this game server, I've to connect on the port 6666. I've made a rule that let comes TCP and UDP packets on this specific port. After that I've made a NAT that redirect UDP and TCP from this specific port to my Hyper-V Linux.
The client can successfully connect to the server, and receive/send TCP request (menu side).
But when I launch a match, clients and the server have to communicate through UDP. At this moment, I don't know what happen, my client receives nothing from the server and I lose the connection on my Remote Desktop Session too, thats quiet weird isn't it?
Do you guys, have any idea about what the hell is happening?
    Thank you,
    Best regards,

About the bandwidth, It's okay, the server has 100Mbps and the game server don't send that much packets to player.
I'll try to check the other things you told, but I think that it is not the problem, it should be okay "normally".
By the way, thank you for your answser, I'll give you feedbacks, I'm going to try a few things based on the points you highlighted me :)

  • Timemachine only connects over wired network

    Hi
I have an iBook G4 running 10.5.8. Recently I purchased a NAS box (Buffalo Linkstation) with the intention of using Time Machine to back up my ibook. After a bit of fiddling around with setup everything was working fine, for about a month. Now Time Machine can no longer see the sparsebundle image on my NAS box even though I can mount the volume via AFP and Samba. As far as I know I haven't changed any configuration settings on either the NAS, the iBook or my wireless router.
I was all ready to blame the NAS and send it back, then I noticed a curious thing. If I connect my iBook to wired ethernet everything works fine again, Time Machine can see the volume, connect and backup no problems. Disconnect ethernet and turn on Airport, nothing works again. I don't think it is the quality of wi-fi connection as I have run some network quality tests and it is comparable to wired ethernet.
I am at a complete loss, does anybody have any ideas please? Any technical information on the mechanisms Time Machine uses to scan for backup volumes might also be useful?
    Thanks in advance

    MacMonsterUk wrote:
I got Time Machine to work with the NAS volume by changing the following command line setting.
    "defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1"
As that command makes clear, Time Machine does not work well, if at all, with most network drives. See this Apple article: Disks that can be used with Time Machine.
Use this at your own risk: First, since it is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
From a post in another forum (found by V.K.):
The technical reason why Apple limits Time Machine to 10.5 AFP volumes appears to be to prevent disk image corruption. There were additional features added to AFP in 10.5 to support Time Machine. These presumably allow the disk image engine to force disk image journal data to write out all the way to the disk. Without such features, a network interruption can result in a corrupted filesystem on the disk image despite journaling. Remember, journaling relies on the journal being written all the way to disk before the changes take place. If you can't guarantee that (e.g., because of network/NAS buffering) then the journal is useless. Time Machine appears to rely heavily on disk journaling to deal with network drop-outs, interrupted backups, and the like. Take this away and your data is at risk.
If the NAS you are using supports these features it should report them to the OS and you should natively be able to choose that volume. If you have to trick the OS to use the volume it means the NAS does not support it.
Since you had to use that command to get it to work, most likely you will not be able to do a full system restore from those backups.
To summarize: if you care about your backup data you should avoid using non-natively supported AFP servers.
That post obviously applies to Leopard; Snow Leopard appears to have added some requirements, that are also not supported by many NAS devices: some that were working with Leopard no longer work with Snow Leopard.
Since you had to use that command to get it to work, most likely you will not be able to do a full system restore from those backups (per #14 of the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum).
