Frequent speed drops and router resetting itself.

Hello,
Over the past month I have been having two problems.
One of which is my broadband speed will randomly drop from 30mbps to as low as 2mbps, this problem will stay until I restart the hub and sometimes even that will not fix it.
The second problem is randomly throughout the day, usually around 4 times per day at random intervals, my hubs lights will all turn off except the power light which stays orange. Then it goes through the usual start up but takes around 5minutes to fully reconnect.
Obviously this is unacceptable, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks,
M. Obbard.

Do you have a separate Openreach modem? What homehub do you have?
Are you connected by wireless of Ethernet?

  • Broadband Speed dropped and wont come back

Hi, I need help and advice please.
Background info first though, so please bare with me.
During last July 2011 I was fed up of very low speeds and managed to get a BT engineer out to check the wiring etc... He did a great job by finding a badly insulated cable between myself and the Cabinet in our village. He also changed our master socket to a newer version.
Over the next few days my broadband speed went from 0.74mb download to 1.95mb download. Fantastic!
This speed has pretty much been a consistent rarely dropping below 1.7mb and at times has even gone up to my highest recorded of 2.46mb. I thought this was brilliant, I could watch iPlayer no problems and xbox live was even bearable (most of the time).
The big problem where I live is sometimes we have power cuts. Sometimes lasting hours but mainly just for seconds. Even so it switches the BB router off. (I know, but not my fault)
When we had the freak snow fall the other month problems started to raise their head. The computers in the household found issues connecting to the router and to resolve this BT BB Helpdesk kept advising me to reset router to enable connection. After connecting new ADSL filters the speed returned but connection issues continued.
BT supplied me with a brand new home hub 3 which I connected thinking it would give me my 2.4mb speeds again. Oh No. To be fare I think I was getting 1.95mb but I wanted more, as most people would. Why cant I get 2.4mb most of the time I have had for a few months.
Anyway I contacted BT who were kind enough to send a BT engineer out. He Said to me the Broadband speed is put out at the exchange (4.5km) at 8mb and comes into our village at between 3mb and 4mb. He detected no fault on the lines and spent the next 3 hours renewing 'D' and 'E' I think side of cabling (found this out later). He mentioned the noise was high but did something to lower it. On leaving he said I had 2.5mb and was confidant it would rise to 3mb.
Great not drastic but should give me 250kbs to 50kbs extra.
The day he was at my house we had 2 short power cuts followed by another couple some days later. This has not helped I'm sure.
    NOW TO THE ISSUE.
My download speed since that day has not gone above 1.46mb download and every time I speak to the call centre they tell me my line is only capable of 2mb therefore 1.46mb is within acceptable range.
I am so tired of explaining that I was capable of receiving 2.4mb some 2 months ago yet now since the new hub 3 and line fiddling I am only capable of a 2mb downstream - 1.46mb DLS.
I know I have to wait 3 - 10 days but with power cuts its a nightmare, and they are so adamant about my 2mb downstream limit What the hell has happened.
Here is a link to my recorded (Speedtest.net) data over the past 11 months showing actual proof of receiving 2.46mb:
    http://www.speedtest.net/results.php?sh=19a6b38248773feaa954bcf8e17ae768&ria=0

    Hi JONNYYOUNG,
I'm not educated enough to help but it mat reassure you, as it did me, to know your circumstances are not unique.
Your story sounds very simialr to my experiende last November, speeds and line length being very similar.  An engineer said there was noise on my line so he switched me to another pair.  Did the engineer do that for you too ? Net result my speed dropped from ~2.3 to ~1.4Mbps.
Fortunately a 21CN upgrade at my excahnge has brought my speed back up to ~2.4Mbps.
I'm sure imjolly, john46 and maybe a mod if you need it will sort you out as well as they did me.

  • Community - My iMac keeps dropping and instantly resetting my wifi connection

Hey folks - I know a lot of people have been complaining about desktop issues and wifi connectivity, but this seems to be quite the variant from other folks' problems...
Every 2-20 minutes, my iMac is dropping, then instantly resetting my wifi connection. The actual wifi drop lasts no longer than 5 seconds, and instantly reconnects itself with no input from me... the problem is it completely interrupts any downloading, streaming, gaming, or anything else I might be doing that requires a constant internet connection. It seems to drop off just long enough to stop the connection, then it resets all on it's own.
I'm currently using a mid-2011 27 inch iMac intel core i5 3.1 ghz processor w/ OS X Lion 10.7.3. I have a Linksys router and a GCI issued modem, unsure of the brand as there are minimal markings on it. The internet/tv service (run by GCI) is smooth throughout the rest of my home, and no other items we own connected to the net seem to have the same problem...
I have tried soft resets on both the modem and router. I have restarted my machine several times and re-added the network location and wifi connection to my computer. I have unplugged both modem and router to let those reset and have unplugged and reconnected my coax cable for several minutes as well. No time of day seems to work well, and it's becoming quite difficult to work and do other fun functions like stream television or game.
Any help here would be super appreciated, and I need to warn folks right away that I am NOT very tech savvy, so any kind of messing with DNS or other what I would call 'advanced' settings may be tough :O Thanks and cheers!
    -Monty

Hi Monty, I know you're not tech savvy but if you can get an 802.11n router your iMac would be able to take advantage of the less crowded 5 GHz spectrum. The Linksys ought to have some markings on it which you could look up to determine if it is 802.11n capable or not.
The symptoms you describe are consistent with wireless interference. The ability to use 802.11n in lieu of the older 802.11g your Linksys router is probably using is one way to mitigate its effects.
The Apple AirPort Extreme base station and the Time Capsule can both create two simultaneous wireless networks: a fast 5 GHz one for your iMac, and a 2.4 GHz one for other devices.
I do not know why your iMac drops off and on but that may be one consideration.

  • Frequent SNR drops and high error rates

    Heya all,
As of the past few days, I've been having issues with my BT Infinity 2 connection suffering from long periods where the SNR drops, and error rates increase. I've contacted support on the phone, but sadly unless I'm using a Home hub, they won't help me, and I don't have one to use. I've offered to provide them with any information they require by email, but they say it's not possible to send them anything. They've tried several line tests and they insist that everything is fine with the line, and that I must have faulty hardware on my end.
For a bit of history; I've had this connection since March 2012. When it was first set up, I was getting no interleaving down or up, and I was getting over the 40/10 I was quoted. A few months later, I was given an upgrade to 80/20. The interleaving remained at 0 both directions, and latency was around 12ms to bbc.co.uk (as an example). As time went on, errors began to show in my modem logs, the speed began to drop, interleaving kicked in, and the latency has increased. I called them about it originally, and an engineer came out. They replace the face plate, gave us a new modem, and issues an line reset. This solved the problem completely for a few months. Around 2 months later, the same things began to happen again. I called support again, but this time, I was outside of my contract period, so they effectively refused to help unless I was using their Home Hub thing, and blamed my equipment. Since this last call, things have steadilly got worse, until recently when the SNR drops began to occurr...
All I want is my connection how it was when I first changed to 80/20, with no interleaving. Nothing has changed in my flat since the connection was installed. There have been issues with street lighting and roadworks in the past, but I believe these were resolved. I suspect that there is a fault with either our line down to the distribution box downstairs (BT's responsibility) or the wire from there to the cabinet (Ashton-under-Lyne, Cabinet 6) (also BT's responsibility). I would ask for an engineer to come out, but I know they won't find a problem (even though there is clearly one there) and I'll get charged for a call-out, and still have my problem! What can I do to try and get it back to how it was?
Asn additional note, there's a neighbor of mine around the corner who's got the same product, going to the same cabinet, and they don't have any of these problems.
This is the current state of my connection as of 2014/07/17 09:47:35:

    no phones plugged in
Line to modem is under 1m long
If there's any other information, at all, which will help diagnose my problem, please let me know and I'll do my best to provide it.
    Please help!

Can you try the above mentioned program in order to monitor the errors on your line ? You should be able to tell as and when the errors start to increase dramatically which in tirn, can make it easier to narrow down any problems.....

  • PLW400 Speed drop and other issues

    Hi..
I bought the PLW400 a while back and it's been working perfectly for months!.. but two weeks ago it stopped working.. so I turned it off and back on but still didn't work. So I did a full reset and reconfigured everything and it finally worked.. but the speed dropped from 20mb to 1mb!! and every few hours it stops working and appear to have lost connection or sometimes it works but with a super slow (dial up like) speed! and sometimes when it stops all of the sudden I see the LEDs blinking slow or turned off!
I've tried to plug it in different places and it was all the same, but when I tried plugging it in next to the main device in the same room I got 10mb.. better but still! my original speed when connecting directly to my router is 40mb!!  What's going on here?
Has anyone else experienced something like this? can someone please help me?

    Hi Husam,
Thank you for your questio.  However this community is for Cisco Small Business Products and the PLW400 is a Linksys product.  Here is the area that may help you further with your question. http://support.linksys.com/en-us/support/powerline/PLW400

  • BT Infinity 2 Speed dropped and now doesn't recove...

I've had BT Infinity 2 for a couple of years now and it has been working flawlessly. I use a Fritz!Box 7390 router and have had no problems at all with it.
That is until mid-January 2014 when I noticed by connection speed dropping down to less than 40MB/s and about 9MB/s on the upload. Now some may say that this is fine, and it does exceed my promised speed of 31MB/s by BT, which is true. However for the last two years I've constantly had speeds of 55-70Mb download and upload speeds of 13-18MBs.
Speedtest.net is reporting: 40Mb download and 10.3 Mb upload.
I do a lot of file transfers and remote server work so I notice the speed drop.
The Frtiz!Box reports some interesting statistics. Currently it is showing this:
                             Receive  Send
    Max. DSLAM throughput    44000   12000
    Min. DSLAM throughput    22000    6000
    Attainable data rate     46200   18176
    Current throughput       43984   12000
Now I know for a fact that prior to this issue the Fritz!Box has been reportinging a Max. DSLAM throughput of 79000 and 20000 with an attainable data rate of 81000 and 24000 respectively. I suspect that there is something wrong either at the exchange DSLAM or with the line in between.
From the above figures it suggests that I am only obtaining BT Infiinty 1 speeds on my line and not Infinity 2. However my account says Infinity 2 and checking with the BT guys they report that there is no problem because I'm getting more than that promised 31 MB/s.
Frustrating as I know this has changed in the last three weeks. What's more suspecious is that I have the Fritz!Box sete to disconnect/reconnect every day at 4am. This means that every day normally I get a varying speed e.g. one day it might report 60/14, the next 55/13, etc. However since I've noticed this problem the line speed never changes, constantly reporting 44/12 with no fluctuation at all. This has been happening for about 3-5 weeks.
I just wondered if there is anything I can do now to find out where or really if there is a problem. BT 150 telephone support in India don't want to know because they say I'm getting more than 31Mbs.
    Thanks,
    Gareth.

  • Huge speed drop and connection problem when answer...

About 2 days ago my internet speed dropped hugely and it's almost now unuseable.  I've run a speed test and the results are below. Any idea on what to do to get this resolved?
Also, every time I answer a call or disconnect a call the broadband connection is los which is very annoying! Again, any ideas about thats causing that?
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
    Download  Speed
    102 Kbps
    0 Kbps
    250 Kbps
    Max Achievable Speed
Download speedachieved during the test was - 102 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 50-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :2432 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps

AndyMc what you have supplied is the wireless connection rate between the router and your wireless adapter this is not related to anything from Bt. This is the connection rate which I am sure would be related to a channel issue more than the connection dropping. Here is a link to the help site that will assist especially the link with regards changing the wireless channels. http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11381/c/346,1887,1889
Make the change and then disconnect and reconnect the wireless and notice if the connection rate changes. I am sure you will get some interesting results. A good little tool you can use is an utility called inSSIDer just do a google search and install that, it will show you where there may be a conflicting channel issue,  the non shared channels are 1.6.and 11. If you need to diagnose the dropping connection problem then that is a different issue to the connection one.

  • Connection speeds dropped and noisy line

    Hi there,
We will be calling BT tomorrow about this as we have had some crackling noise on our phone line over the past few days and the noise margin has shot up and the speed dropped, broadband connections keeps dropping randomly and sometimes the speed drops to 2mb instead of the usual 18-19mb I get.
When I plug the phone directly into the socket I hear no noise on the line at all, when I plug the phone into the ADSL adapter I still hear no noise, when I plug the router into the ADSL adapter I start to hear noise when the router starts to connect up.
Dont have a replacement adapter tonight to test this theory so thought I would throw it out there for experienced users to comment on.
    Thoughts?
As I said before my noise margin has went up quite a bit since this issue.

The noise margin will normally fluctuate but only very small amounts. You should find that noise margin is higher about lunchtime and as it get dark and more use the phoenline then noise margin starts to reduce and get lowest about 11/12pm and then the cycle starts again

  • Why will my ipod play a song or two and then reset itself?

Earlier, I had an issue with synchronizing my iPod to iTunes - it kept freezing up. I reset and restored the iPod, then I re-installed iTunes and I finally was able to transfer music. Now, the iPod will play a song or two, then the music stops and the black "apple" logo shows up on the screen and resets itself. What's going on here? It is the 8gb iPod Nano Black.

  • Login password doesn't work (and repeatedly resets itself)

I've run across an odd problem maintaining my in-laws' Mac Mini running OS X Tiger (10.4.11). From time to time, one of the user (non-admin) accounts seems to lose its password--if I type the correct password in to log in, it's rejected. (Yes, it's the correct password, and, no, caps lock is not on.) Every time this occurs, it always happens to the same user account. I haven't been able to figure out any other way to restore access to the problematic account than logging in to an admin account to reset the password on the problematic account.
The most puzzling thing is that resetting the password works for a while, but then the problem reoccurs. This has happened at least once or twice a month for several months, and I'd really like to find the underlying issue. Just to rule a couple other things out, I'm sure they aren't changing their password, and I have tried running Disk Utility in the past to repair permissions with no effect.
    Any thoughts?

    Hi there,
Here is something that might be helpful - reset the password of the user by using your system disk. Put your Tiger CD in the computer and restart. As the computer is restarting, hold down the C key until you see the gray Apple appear. This will begin the "setup" process. Press OK for selecting your language and then at the top, look at Utilities for "Password Reset". Change the password to something you have NEVER used and click Save. Restart and open Keychain Access. Under Edit - click the "Change Password for Keychain" and then reset your password with the same password you used in the "Password Reset". Hope this helps. I've also found that disabling the airport card will usually allow me to login with problem account. First, I would login with Admin account, disable airport, then re-login with "problem account".

  • Speed drops and lack of BT response

    Hi,
Just venting my rage really, I have been attempting to get BT to recognise that something has happened to my connection and all I get is "it matches your IP profile". The thing is I have had 2 distinct step changes in speed, latency etc and they do not seem to recognise this is an issue. I got 40Mbps from December through to April with a rock solid connection, I have a samknows monitoring box connected direct to HH5 with gigabit cable so have good data summarised below. The connection was rock solid with very little deviation in speed until a big step change Feb equating to about a 15% speed reduction. This was all ok according to my line stats apparently, subsequent to that I have had another step change which has dropped it to 23% less than it was. I'm now on a HH5b trial and see another reduction but because I'm "within what's expected" BT don't take this seriously. I've never even had anyone suggest it's due to other factors such as more users and that it's just to be expected (which I coudl possible accept), I just get it's within stats.
The annoying thing is that any organisation worth it's salt should be looking at the rock solid nature of the connection early in the year and be striving to improve on it not reduce the service. I'm on the full unlimited service so it's not like it's cheap!
Anyone got any suggestions on how to get them to listen?
The usual things have been tried, new HH5, new cables, different computers etc!
    Cheers

Doing it's thing over a large period of time maybe, certainly during the stable speed period the HH5a did a couple of changes per day as seems to be the norm.  The 16 seems to have been a 'bad day' as I have several data points all low that day. It's of interest as it was immediately prior to the last drop.
    Current stats on HH5b are:
    Data rate 9801 / 324007
    Maximum data rate 9437 / 456828
    Noise margin 5.9 / 7.99
    Line attenuation 0.0 / 23.510
    Signal attenuation 0.0 / 0.0
and btwholesale speed test just gave
Download speedachieved during the test was - 30.69 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 25.09 Mbps-31.36 Mbps .
     Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 31.36 Mbps

  • Verizon DSL speed drop and constant re-connects

I was recently having constant (10 times?) dropped internet connection during the day.  After the standard several hour discussions with Bangalore, I was sent a new modem. Now, I connect at 4.5 download speed instead of 5.2- 5.7. Further, this modem (Dlink) seems to automatically reconnect when I lose connectivity. Nice... but does not fix my problem. I got back on with Bangalore (yea, not happy with this) and they told me that 4.5 is what I am paying for. Well, this is a monopoly. I am fatigued from getting ticket numbers that the next day are automatically closed out. My internet service is pretty cheap compared to Comcast. But now, it no longer works correctly. I have a contract. I am just ranting a bit. Anyone else suffering like this? Lemme know.

It's a bummer the newer D-Link modems as of right now don't have a known way of getting the Transceiver/DSL Line statistics from them. Right now it's up to Verizon to get those statistics and present them to the customer or to use their best judgement on them. If you have an older modem sitting around that can display the Transceiver Statistics, it would be nice to see them.
While you're at it, certainly double check all of your filters. Make sure they are not installed backwards or are otherwise not installed on devices that are attached to the phone line. Alarm panels and Satellite Receivers need to be filtered too. PA systems as well.

  • IPod 120gb isn't recognized by computer and keeps resetting itself

I have a iPod Classic 120gb and it has been playing up for nearly a year now so I gave up on it. The other day I got it out and started to try and fix it again, but still haven't had any luck.  It constantly restarts itself and only occasionaly tells me to conect it cause it needs to be restored on itunes, however when I plug it my computer doesn't recognise it (or if it does and I try to restore I get an error message (1933 i think)).  I have even tried to use Disk Utilities and it can never finish reformating or erasing my ipod.
Strangely my iPod often seems to think it is in Disk Mode also, and I have no idea why.  I have searched online but haven't found andy help and I have looked on many sites but none of the standard tricks seem to work, i.e. the 5R's.
Anyone had trouble like this in the past?
    NEED HELP URGENTLY!

My apologies. if my urgent help is 1 week old and you have already solved your problems, by throwing it out of the window.
After recharging it for at least 2 hours, do the iPod Disk Diagnostics, as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem but helps in troubleshooting.
The report, may tell us if it is recoverable using Disk Utility Erase, or have to replace the hardisk.
