Function in SQL expression

can we use function which has exception hadler defined in it in a SQL expression?

That's not too hard to try for yourself, is it?
SQL> create function a return number
  2  as
  3  begin
  4    return 1/0;
  5  exception
  6  when zero_divide then
  7    return 2;
  8  end;
  9  /
Functie is aangemaakt.
SQL> select a from dual
  2  /
                                     A
                                     2
1 rij is geselecteerd.Regards,

  • Which is correct Syntax for IN function in SQL expressions filters?

    Hi,
    I want to build a report which looks at the last 4 snapshot dates.
    I obtained each snapshot date using this filter
    Snapshot Date."Snapshot Date" =TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 7 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) A
    now the second one would be:
    Snapshot Date."Snapshot Date" =TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 6 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) B
    third one
    Snapshot Date."Snapshot Date" =TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 5- dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) C
    4th one
    Snapshot Date."Snapshot Date" =TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 4 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) D
    to simplify them let's call the filters A, B , C, D
    so, my sql expression should be like something like Snapshot Date."Snapshot Date" in 'A', 'B', 'D', 'C'
    I have tried to combine the below, with brackets and comma separated, without brackets, with single quotes and without, but I always get a syntax error.
    Snapshot Date."Snapshot Date" in TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 7 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) ,
    TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 6 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) ,
    TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 5 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) ) ,
    TIMESTAMPADD( SQL_TSI_WEEK,-10, TIMESTAMPADD(SQL_TSI_DAY, ( 4 - dayofweek(current_date) + 2), current_date) )
    It doesn't seem to like the IN function either.
    Any idea?

    G.

    Take each of these filters and union them in your answers report.
    This way, you filter down to exactly the last 4 days.

  • Regarding Restrictions on calling functions from sql expressions

    Hi all,
    While going through the functions of oracle 9i plsql documentation i came across restrictions on calling a function, i that i did not understand the following statement. can anyone explain me with an example. Please.........
    Functions called from SQL statements cannot contain statements that end the transactions.
    Regards,
    Sri Ram.

    Some where from google
    http://www.ucertify.com/article/what-are-the-restrictions-on-a-user-defined-function-that-is-called-from-a-sql-expression.html
    >
    •The function cannot contain statements that end the transaction. For example, the function cannot contain transaction control statements (such as COMMIT), session control statements (such as SET ROLE), or system control statements (such as ALTER SYSTEM). Also, it cannot contain DDL statements (such as CREATE) because they are followed by an automatic COMMIT.

  • SQL Expression in decode function or case statement?

    Can I put SQL expressions in decode function or case statement?
    For example,
    select le.profile, decode( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile, 0, 'N', 'Y')
    from element le;
    or
    select le.profile, case WHEN ( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile) = 0 THEN 'N'
    ELSE 'Y'
    from element le;
    None of the above work.
    Can anyone tell me how to make it work?
    Is there any workaround?
    Thanks,
    J

    You simply needed and END to your CASE statement;
    SQL> with profile_data as (
       select 'XXXX_AFTER' name, 1 object_id from dual),
         element as (
       select 1 profile from dual union all
       select 2 from dual)
    select le.profile,
       case WHEN ( select count(1) from profile_data where NAME= 'XXXX_AFTER' and object_id = le.profile) = 0
       THEN 'N'
       ELSE 'Y'
       END new_col
    from element le
       PROFILE N

  • SQL, PL/SQL Expression and PL/SQL function

    In a Post Calculation Computation field I wanted the following computation:
    if B is X
    then
    field = A
    else
    field = B
    end if;
    or as a decode
    Decode(B,X,A,B)
    I could not get this to work so I wrote a database function that simulates the decode. So when I put:
    My_decode(B,X,A,B)
    in the field it did work.
    Basically I am not sure what kind of code one is expected to put into SQL, PL/SQL Expression and PL/SQL function fields. Can someone give an example of each? Also the APEX help is sometimes incorrect.
    For example if you click the "Post Calculation Computation" label it says:
    The For example, if this item is named P1_X, you could use post calculation expressions such as UPPER(:P1_X), INITCAP(:P2_Y), MIN(:P1_X,:P2_Y-200), NVL(:P1_X,:P2_Y), or a function call such as return my_func(:P1_X); to set the final value of the item.
    But if you put return my_func(:P1_X); in the field you get an error. It should be just my_func(:P1_X);
    thanks Rene

    DECODE is only available in SQL, so would have to be used in a SQL Expression.Yes, that's what APEX keeps telling me when I use in in a field that has "SQL or PL/SQL expression" above it. So what do you put in the field?

  • First time an SQL expression is placed on report a DB SELECT executes

    The same problem can be created using the normal Crystal Reports XI Release 2 developer environment and/or code (not only a code issue). I'm using CR XI.
    Symptom:
    We dynamically auto generate SQL Expressions, Tables, Joins, Formula's and anything through C# and place it onto the Crystal Report through code via run-time user input in a web environment. I recieved a notification from one of my DB admins that crystal reports is causing massive memory consumption via unknown SELECT statements that have no joins and/or WHERE criteria.
    Some Detective Work/More Info:
    After using Microsoft "SQL Profiler" along with Crystal, I understand what is happening but don't know the "work around" to make Crystal stop executing the following SELECT scenario.
    Anytime I create a new "SQL Expression" for the first time and then physically "drag and drop" it onto the report then Crystal is executing a "silent" SELECT statement against the database in the design environment. I'm calling it "silent" because I need MS SQL Profiler to see it happen. I'm guessing that this is used for validation or something but this is causing problems when automatically generating a report in a production environment.
    Steps to re-create:
    1. Open MS "SQL Profiler" and get it running. (will show Crystal Engine silently executes the SELECTS)
    2. Add a new "SQL Expression" to your report.
    3. Drag and Drop your new "SQL Expression onto your report
    4. You will see that Crystal has created an SQL query and executed it against your database in design environment.
    The Problem:
    I can see under normal circumstances why you might want this funtionality (if it's actually used for the Crystal Engine to validate your SQL Expression). But, What also makes this functionality horrible is that on my behalf Crystal is creating these SELECT statements and using cross joins which is a major problem in a production environment. As a result, huge record sets are being created on our DB Server. I don't believe that this has any purpose in a production evironment when the cross-joins can create huge amounts of results just for the sake of Crystal Internally validating a new SQL Expression placed onto a report. It would be nice to disable this functionality in production. I don't know a "work around" since these SELECT queries are created on my behalf by the Crystal Engine at design time (via code auto generation in production).
    Questions:
    Can this functionality be disabled to prevent a production server from incurring the execution of these queries?
    Anybody else notice this and have a "work around"?

    Aren't these rules equivalent to "Monday this week, where Monday is the first day of the week"? In which case the PL/SQL Expression you require is:
    trunc(sysdate, 'iw')For example:

  • SQL Expression Question

    To the forum members
    In the Crystal Formula Editor, under Print State, there is a function called Previous.  This compares the contents of the current field to the previous one.  Is there a similar function in the SQL Expression Editor.  I'm trying to use a Case When statement to compare the current value in two fields to their previous value.  If these values do not match I need the SQL Expression to add 20 fields together and display the total.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Help on SQL expressions in IDT

    Hello experts,
    I have relational connection type universe connected to SAP BW multiprovider.
    I have 2 questions...
    1. I want to be able to derive the cumulative total by fiscal year period. In WebI, the function is runningsum. What expression can I use in IDT business layer to calculate runningsum.
    Example..
    2. In WebI, there is a function sum[amount] ForAll ([Fiscal Yr Period]). How can I acheive the same function in IDT's business layer SQL expression?
    Example..desired result is below highlighted in yellow colum
    Appreciate any help or guidance.
    Just to clarify, I need to keep the calculations in the universe and not in WebI report.
    Thanks
    Ann

    Ann,
    To be perfectly honest, I would advise against it unless you have a really specific requirement which you cannot do in Webi. Cumulatives like running sum are better achieved in Webi because it offers more flexibility. You build a universe to provide the flexibility of adhoc analysis - try and visualise in SQL terms what you want to do and then consider that this can be mixed and matched with other dimensions and it throws the granularity.
    What benefits do you perceive from doing it at the IDT level? Is it simply because the end users are struggling with the context operators?

    Hi Donald,
        The functionality of using a parameter in a function is only available in the formula editor and not in SQL Expression. Parameters cannot be passed to the SQL Expression, the main purpose of the SQL Expression is to make use of Database functions to make calculations at the database level but the current functionality of the product only allows you to use Database fields.
    There is an article that talks on SQL Expressions and can be useful http://technicalsupport.businessobjects.com/KanisaSupportSite/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=c2016184&sliceId=&dialogID=6018612&stateId=1%200%206020316

  • OWB10GR2 - Error when try to use 'MOD' function in an Expression

    Hi
    I'm trying to use the MOD function in an expression, e.g. mod(44,12), however, when I validate I get the error:-
    Line 2, Col 18:
    PLS-00201: identifier 'MOD' must be declared
    Line 0, Col 1:
    PL/SQL: Statement ignored
    Has anyone else come across this problem, and can anyone please suggest a solution?
    Thanks
    GB

    Not yet, thanks for the suggestion.
    If you use MOD in an expression or Constant, the expression does not validate but the mapping itself does validate, deploy and runs ok. So
    This issue has been reported as a bug therefore for the time being we can just ignore the expression validation message.
