Generate PDF crashes RoboHelp 7

Every time I try Generate PDF it crashes RoboHelp 7. I have
also tried enabling the PDF generation in the Printed Documentation
single source layout. Has anyone else experienced this and can you
provide a solution? I am trying this with the sample help project
Customer Care, as well as my own help projects. Thanks.

I continue to experience this problem. Most recently it
crashed with this in the alm.log file. Any advice out there?

  • Cannot generate pdf in RoboHelp after upgrading to Acrobat 7.0 Pro

I just upgraded from Acrobat 7.0 to Acrobat 7.0 professional.  RoboHelp will no longer generate pdfs.  Get error "Cannot locate printer driver.  Reinstall Acrobat 7.0"
Am using RoboHelp for HTML version 6.

I don't have a compatibility chart for the versions of Acrobat and RoboHelp, not sure if that could be an issue. I assume Acrobat is working otherwise - for example, if you PDF from Word
It was the case that RH had to be installed before Word. I don't think that extended to Acrobat but it could be worth trying an uninstall and reinstall.
Also try setting Acrobat's compatibility settings to something low such as Acrobat 5.
Ultimately you may have to settle for generating to Word and creating the PDF from there.

  • Generating pdf from RoboHelp gives "macro disabled" error

I'm using RoboHelp 8 -> RoboHelp HTML, and I have MS Word 2007 and "Adobe PDF Creation Add-On 9" installed.
To generate a pdf, I navigated to "Single Source Layouts" and double-clicked "Printed Documentation" (File -> Generate -> PDF should be the same), and I kept getting an error: "macros disabled. Please see printed documentation for enabling macros."
I finally went to Word 2007, pressed the "button" (upper left), selected Word Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center settings, and selected "Enable all macros." The default setting was "Disable all macros with notification."
When I selected "Enable all macros," I could now generate a pdf - but what does enabling macros in Word have to do with generating a pdf? Maybe this has something to do with the order that Office 2007 and the "Adobe PDF Creation Add-On 9" were installed. It appears I do not have a bonafide version of Acrobat 9 installed (just Acrobat Reader 9.3), and maybe that's the problem. Thanks for any help or advice, Len

    Hi,
I am hereby giving the explanation for this issue with screenshots:
I have opened one of my RoboHELP project and right clicked on the Printed Documentation option.
Here I found that the Set as Primary Layout option is disabled. Hence I clicked on Generate…
Then the following window is displayed.
    I have clicked Next.
Then the following window is displayed
    4. I have selected the complete TOC and clicked Next
Then the following window is displayed
    5. Again clicked Next
    6. Then clicked Save and Generate.
        The following window is displayed.
    7. Then, I have clicked OK.
After a while the following window is displayed.
    Solution
1 Open a Word document. Click File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings...
    Select the Enable all macros
Now, save the document and close it.
Go to your RoboHELP source files. Now you can generate a PDF and/or a Word document.

    Support says:
Since you’re unable to generate PDF in RoboHelp 7, here
    are the possible
troubleshooting steps that we could do:
    1. Make sure that you are already running on the latest
    version of
RoboHelp 7 (7.0.2). To check, go to Help > About RoboHelp
    HTML. If
you’re not running on 7.0.2 yet, please download the
    patch from the link
    below:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/robohelp/downloads.html
    2. Open Microsoft Word 2003. Go to Tools > Macro >
    Security and change
    Security Level to Low.
    3. Launch RoboHelp and generate PDF.
    4. Single Source Layouts Pod in RH, right click on Printed
    Documentation
and choose New layout. Save the new layout and generate from
    there. See
if you would still get the same behavior.
    5. If issue still persists, it’s possible that you have
    a corrupted
project. Please delete the xpj and the cpd file of your
    project. For
additional information about this, please refer to the link
    below:
Opening a Corrupt HTML Help Project

The step for RH X5 is still applicable for RH7.

    you have any

  • PDF causes Robohelp 9 to crash

Can you think of what elements might cause a PDF file to crash Robohelp every time I try to compile the help and publish?
I downloaded an Excel calendar template from microsoft.com. The formulas update the dates in the month areas when you select the year from a dropdown menu. Nothing too fancy, but kind of cool.
I rearranged the months around a little bit, used a custom font, and inserted the company logo.jpg. I set the print area to only print the calendar, NOT the dropdown, then saved it as a PDF. I uploaded it as a baggage file, and attached it to a topic. All is very normal. Then I compile and get an message telling me that Robohelp 9 encountered an error. When I click for more information, I get this - it goes on for days. I just copied the first page.
So I closed down other software, made sure no PDF files displayed in the live version on the server I was publishing to, removed the custom font, deleted the image, and tried some other diddling, but nothing worked. When I remove that file, the project compiles just fine.
Does anyone have any other thoughts? The next thing I'm going to do is try a different template, but I'm wondering if, after all my customization, I can still use this one somehow.
    Thanks!

Update: I tried to save other Excel templates into PDFs directly from the Microsoft site without making any changes at all, then added them as baggage files and found that NONE of them compile if they're in a Robohelp project. I don't know if it's a Microsoft issue or a Robohelp issue, but it's out there.
So, I did a screen shot of the calendar and created a .jpg, popped it into Word and saved it as a PDF that way. One does what one has to...

  • RoboHelp/RoboPDF freezes when trying to generate PDF printed documentation

    Hi,
I am using RoboHelp HTML X5.0.2 build 801 with Win2k and Word
2000. Whenever I try to generate printed documentation in PDF
format RoboHelp freezes and doesn't respond until I kill the
program. I also tried first generating the printed documentation in
MS Word .doc format and then tried to generate the PDF from within
Word. RoboPDF kicks in this time and freezes along with MS Word.
Any ideas why this is happening?

It works on anything we throw at it. You could try the
    supplied sample projects.
Have you tried creating a document directly in Word and
    creating a PDF from that?
Where is you normal template stored? Locally?
Take a look at Snippet 33 on my site. You should be getting
an error message if that is the problem but it might be worth
    checking the path anyway.
    Click
    here.
If that does not fix it, email me offline.

  • Can not generate PDF Output in RoboHelp 11

Can not generate PDF Output. I keep getting the same error message:
"Microsoft® Word has not been started on this computer.
Launch Word and click the 'Start using Microsoft® Word' option before generating Printed Documentation again."
I have MS Office 2013 32-bit and RoboHelp on a 64-bit Wondows desktop.
What do am I doing wrong?

Is the 32 bit version of Word the only version of Word you have on the machine?
Where does Word's normal.dot reside? On your local machine? Sometimes it gets put on a network drive and that can cause problems.

  • I am able to generate PDF from Framemaker file but not able to generate pdf from book in robohelp

    Hi,
Using robo help i am able to generate pdf  from a single framemaker file.
but when i am importing whole book then i am not able to make it.
And also it is not showing any error on console
It goes to hang like situation and i have to close it from task maneger.

Ok, silly question - why are you bothering to try and create PDFs from RH when you've got FM? FM to PDF produces great results; RH to PDF involves having to go through Word - i.e. RH - Word - PDF = too much work IMHO.

    Hi guys,
    i've got a little problem.
Everytime i browse with the finder to PDFs it chrashes, while generating PDFs in preview.
Also it takes ages to generate the preview for a PDFs with about 1MB.
any hints and tipps about that problem ?
    thanks in advance.

    Hello sponger:
If no one posts a fix for you, I would consider an archive and install (NOT an erase and install):
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Be sure you have a good backup/retreat strategy before you proceed. In my case, I make bootable clones of my iMacs on an external firewire drive using a little program called SuperDuper (www.shirt-pocket.com).

  • Cannot generate PDF with RH10

I have searched the forum and Peter Grainge's site and not found a solution to this problem that worked.
I have a new installation of RH10 on Windows 7 sp1. It was installed as a trial and then licensed. I do not have the complete Adobe Acrobat -- only the add-on that was installed with RH.
I used RoboHelp HTML to create a simple webhelp project and attempted to generate a PDF from it with the single source layout for Printed Documentation. The following error occurred:

RoboHelp can successfully create a PDF of a single topic. It can create a PDF with Review > Create PDF for Review.  It can successfully create a doc from this project, and Word is able to save that doc as a pdf.
RH can open the projects that it created but cannot open the sample projects. The sample directories are read-only and I cannot reset them. I do not know why.
I uninstalled RH and reinstalled it. The problem is still occurring.
I am baffled. I am an inexperienced RH user so the problem might be a simple one. I would be grateful for any advice.
    Best wishes,
    Juliette Curtis

I was also facing this issue and got the same error.  After much trial and error I found the following solution. So sharing that here. ( I am not sure whether this works for all the use cases. But in my case it worked. I am using Windows 7, RH11, and MS Office 2010.)
Open any Office application. (I opened Word)
Open File > Options > Add-Ins. (You will be able to manage your add-ins from this tab. When I browsed through the list I found the "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM" Addin was with the list of  "Disabled Application Add-Ins")
Select "Disabled items" from the Manage list. (This list is available at the bottom of the Add-Ins tab)
Click Go. The Disable Items window is displayed.
Select "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" from the list.
    Click Enable.
Click Close. The  "Acrobat PDFMaker Office COM Addin" is moved to the list of "Active Application Addins".
    Close MS word.
Now when you generate the Printed Documentation output from RH11, the error mentioned in the query is not appearing and a PDF output is generated.
    Hope this solution will help.

There is a warning about a malformed topic. I have seen projects  where there is nothing wrong with the topic but where the machine needed more RAM. What are the basics of your PC?
Also try turning off PDF and generating a Word document instead. If that works, PDF from there. Does that work?

  • Error in generating PDF output

Whenever, I generate a PDF output, RH goes through the process but displays an error message stating that the file_name.pdf is not found. It did the same thing when I tried generating a PDF of a sample project as well. Any pointers on how to resolve this issue?

I am just trying to see where there could be a problem. When you generate a PDF from RoboHelp a temporary Word file is automatically created in the background from which the PDF is created. What I was trying to get you to check was whether the problem is with the PDF creation or somewhere else. If you go through the same process to create a PDF but deselect the PDF creation option BUT select the Word creation option, a Word file will be created. If that works, it will have exactly the same fonts, styles as the PDF would if you can create it.
I am also a bit unsure what you mean. It sounds like you are generating a Word file, then changing the fonts and styles in Word. Why not just make sure that your fonts, styles in RoboHelp are correct and then just map these to your Word template when creating the Word file. Peter Grainge has some excellent tips on this on his site. It is well worth a read.

  • PDF Output: Why is "PDF Review" styled different than "Generate PDF"?

I am new to RH.  I have imported a folder of HTML files (used in an Eclipse Help plugin) into RH9 for HTML as a project. My goal is to produce a PDF document.
When I generate a PDF from Printed Documentation in the Single Source Layouts pad, many styles are incorrect. I've tried generating to Word and from there to PDF with the same effect.
However, when I use Create PDF for Review from Project Manager the styles shown in the PDF (fonts, alignment, etc) are nearly perfect! Is the PDF Review option using a different CSS?
I have tried exploring the CSS specified in the Generate PDF flow, but I am unable to make changes, perhaps due to my massive state of confusion.  So I'm losing hope that I could manually tweak to CSS that I think I use in the Generate PDF flow to appear like the "PDF Review" flow. I specified the same CSS used in the Eclipse Help system, but evidently there must be some defaults built into the Eclipse viewer that are not specified in the CSS we use.
    Thanks in advance,
    Charly in SJ

Here's what I think is happening. You say PDF review is good but printed documentation gives wrong styles. You also say you assume PDF review uses the Stylesheet (CSS) for each topic, yes it does. Now if that is giving the correct styles it tells you that is what you need when you generate printed documentation.
When you use a Word template you will get very different styles unless you have set up the template to mirror your CSS. Using the Map to CSS option you have two choices, you can select None when each topic will be printed according to the CSS attached to the topic or you can select one of the CSS files available in the project.
I suspect that if you select the None option, you will get the same as you are seeing in the PDF review.
If your document is not going to be worked on by anyone, such as a training department using it as a based document, then the CSS options are fine. If others will be working on it, then the Word template option is better as lists will be true lists and headings will be true heading styles.

  • Save pop-up instead of download window while generating PDF.

    Hello,
*Is it possible to allow the user to save the generated pdf right away instead of having them download first. (download option opens the PDF in a new window, and firefox 3.06 crashes upon opening the pdf).
One more issue is, can we control the View based on browser. If user opens in firefox, I have to hide button and enable a link to save the PDF (as requested above * ).
Currently I am using this code:
// Open the resource to save or in new browser
           IWDWindow window = wdComponentAPI.getWindowManager().createNonModalExternalWindow(res.getUrl(WDFileDownloadBehaviour.AUTO.ordinal()),
           res.getResourceName());
This works fine in IE 6.0.
    Thanks
    Srinivas

WDFileDownloadBehaviour.ALLOW_SAVE instead of AUTO should do the job

Now I generate pdf. But the generated pdf file, do not show bookmarks, I also checked in View-Navigation Panels- > but no bookmark icon is there.
I want bookmarks when I create pdf for my documentaion,

Actually my concern is that the elements, I would like to add like bookmarks in the PDF files are in some files of the book, but not all.
I feel that the problem is there.
But why i see some of elements, and not all ?
You do not have to physically use the elements in each file of the book; however, all the files in the book should use the same set of elements. My guess is that FrameMaker does not search through all the files in the book when it generates the list of available elements. It probably creates these things from the first file in the book.
Do all the files in the book use the same set of elements? If not, make sure the first file in the book uses the set that includes all the elements you want to be in the bookmarks.
In my opinion, all the files in the book should use the same set of elements. So, I suggest opening a copy of your template, select all the files in the book, and import the element definitions from the template to the files.
