Getting only critical updates

Hey,
I get error occasionally when trying to install package (don't remember exact error) but error is resolved with 'pacman -Syy' (sync repos).
Unfortunately almost daily updates to packages which work perfectly isn't my thing and resolving problems with updated packages isn't also my thing (I know I can switch back to old package easily since they are in cache, but still unnecessary problem(s) ) -- I just want to ignore those unnecessary updates.
How I've resolved this problem so far is by issuing 'pacman -Syy' -- syncing repos but not updating. But my concern is that I read in wiki that syncing repos without updating is bad (not sure why) and also I actually want to get security updates as fast as possible.
I'm running now 3.10.25-1-lts.
Pretty sure I have misunderstood something but have so much new after switching from Slackware and can't keep up.

Without being asked I will tell you my story: This week I changed from Debian Wheezy (used it from its beta to today, so around a year) back to Arch. It sounds that you want what Debian does: Only install bugfix-updates, dont updated to new versions if they are not absolutely required to fix security problems.
Before I switched to Debian I was an Arch user for some years. But I got unhappy because editing configs to get a sane setup and searching the Arch-Wiki for every tiny bit of required information to maintain my system felt wrong. Also I felt (just as you) that a rolling release model does not fit my needs for a stable system (I had a bad experience when updating Arch on a notebook that was unused for months... updating from that old state to the new one was more work than reinstalling the system).
Now, after using Debian exclusively for a while, I got to the point that I got unhappy about all the outdated software (I am a software developer, and it sucks if you have to choose between using debians outdated tools/libs or compiling every things including its dependency manually or just develop against outdated libs). Also I noticed that the update model of Debian does not guaranty a system without any problems: After installing it I had to compile a newer kernel on may own for a few weeks to get rid of a bug with my (then) new CPU, even after a year VLC still crashes every second time when I launch it for a folder, LXC templates where broken... The essence: Some things will not get fixed when you only accept critical updates.
Now I am back to Arch. This time installed inside a BTRFS subvolume that makes it easy to create snapshots and to roll back if an updated breaks something. In this case I will just restore the latest snapshot and wait until the problems are fixed before I retry the update. Not that I expect any problems: After all that time using Arch the only serious problem was that with the notebook that was not updated for months. But it feels good to know that I can always get back a working system if an update causes problems. This way I can enjoy the latest software versions without risking to loose my production environment (yes, it can break, but I can restore it within a minute).

Any way to get only new updates for disconnected WSUS?

I have two servers set up. One is online, getting the new updates correctly. The other one is offline where I successfully was able to transfer the approve updates from the online WSUS. My work requires me to get new updates and transfer the new updates
from the online to offline WSUS once in a while. The problem is that I cannot use any external hard drive for data transfer due to security reasons. I can only use DVD of which we only have duel layer (8.5GB max) as our highest.
My question is any way to get the newest updates only and be able to plug them in the WSUScontent folder in the offline WSUS? I rather not have to span 7-8 DVDs for a 61GB folder of all the updates each time. I would love any method or advice that can
be offered. I'm limited on what third-party software I can use as well unfortunately.

You could probably work something out, using ROBOCOPY and it's various comparison operators (such as Archive bit, or date/timestamp).
You'd need to have the "last file set prepared for the offline server" available, to do the comparison. Then, tinker with the comparison operators to determine the set which works for you. This should give you the "delta", and then you could
burn the "delta" files/folders to your media.
Depending on your OS in use, ROBOCOPY might already be built-in for you (so no third-party software needed)

Unable to get Office 2010 updates

I have windows 7 professional SP1 and Office 2010 ( Home and Business edition). In windows update I am getting only windows update & not office updates. All available options have failed. Microsoft chat agents several rimec checked my system remotely
however even they have not been able to address this issue. When I try ro check updates within office , again it refirects to windows update only. I am frusteted with this & finally planning to uninstall office and reinstall it.How can I download
product installer with updated build ? I am from india & there is no way I will get support from Microsoft india.
Pls. give me details of site ( I have heard that digital river of some other sites allow download after putting product key.

According to your description about unable to get Office 2010 update, you can check this setting and try again.
Go to Control Panel > Windows Update > Change Settings, tick the option of “Give me update for other Microsoft when I update Windows”.

Windows 8 critical update crashed lost browser and all history and tabs how do i get old browser

Install Windows 8 Critical update; computer crashed and lost everything; Microsoft OS will not let me back into programs, keeps blocking me and gives me a temp password so I can still use PC. Had to reinstall FIREFOX, can't recover old browser and my very important tab. I can't get to backup file and Microsoft is unable to fix the problem, so I am starting from scratch. Tried to use Profile information but it contains only my current profile.

If you do not have the original profile folder and its contents, or some backup of that; there is not anything we can do to help.
*Do you have any forms of backup at all ?
*Did you sync with another device ?
I am assuming the original hard drive has been reformatted, or is totally unusable.

Could you please let me know what version of OS are you using.
Also, go to Control Panel/System Preferences in Windows/MAC and check whether Acrobat 9 is shown under installed programs list.
You might also try running Acrobat cleaner tool to remove all traces of previous versions of Acrobat:

Then, install Acrobat X again from the link mentioned below:
Download Acrobat products | Standard, Pro | XI, X

I will try am explain what I see: I hooked up my I Pod Clicked on Music checked Sync Music 1909 Songs select Playlist, Artists, albums, and genres checked Include music videos Playlists checked 50's Music checked 70's Music checked 80's Music checked 90's Music checked 2000 Music checked 2010 Music These are songs that I downloaded onto my I Tunes. In Snow Leopard you update Java from Software Update (in the Apple menu). You can check your version by opening Terminal and typing
java -version
(don't get creative and type anything else)
The latest version is 1.6.0_65.

How to get only updated records for a column using loading type INSERT

I have source1 containg 3 columns bill_cd,bill_desc,bill_date and
source2 has the columns bill_cd,bill_key,source_id.
My target has the columns bill_cd,bill_date,bill_desc .
Now the requirement is, bill_cd in target should not repeated when we run the mapping more than one thime. it should get only updated records not the previous records using only INSERT Loading type(for target) not to use update/insert.
How can we achieve this logic in mapping level.
Anybody Please give me some solution immediately.

Here bill_cd is not unique. Yes,I want only new records using INSERT as loading type. Suppose when the map runs for the first time, bill_cd is loaded with values 1 to 5.
Now, in the source I have got new records 6 to 10 for bill_cd and when I run the mapping again I need to get only records for bill_cd from 6 to 10 using INSERT as loading type.
Is it possible to achieve this at mapping level?

Hello fuchs (guess), If you cancelled while downloading the 4GB Lion, no problem, download again. Snow Leopard should run (start holding the option key).
If you cancelled during the install process, I do not know. In this case you could try to start with the CMD + R keys pressed, and choose the restore, which may work if the creation of the restore partition of Lion has finished.
If that does not work, reinstall Snow Leopard with the CD (start holding the C key), after that download the Combo Update 10.6.8 to update the Snow Leopard completely, then redownload Lion (App Store, click "purchases" while holding the Option Key, find Lion, click "install"). If you want to have your own copy of the Lion installer, you have to copy the installer to a Memory stick or burn to DVD before you install, see else where.

Fine tuning my updates deployment and I saw that updates with the classification "Critical" in WSUS were not being pushed. Sure enough they had "None" listed as the severity. My ADR does not have "None" checked so
I understand why they did not go out however we want to make sure ALL critical updates are deployed.
We did not really way ALL updates with the severity as "None" to go out which is what looks like will happen if I check "None" in my ADR. Sort of silly MS does this. Why does MS flag a critical update as "None" and
what is the best practices to deal with those if you do not want to just push everything with a "None" severity.

Microsoft defines Critical Updates as "A widely released fix for a specific problem that addresses a critical, non-security-related bug." (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824684)
So, as Critical Updates are not security updates at all, they do not have a Bulletin ID to define severity (this is why in WSUS Critical Updates have an empty Bulletin ID field and Severity equal to "None").

I suspect you may want to try Microsoft's Mac Office support forums, since this appears to be an issue with their software.
What error message (if any) do you get if you try and start up Excel?
However, if it happened to me I'd probably remove Office and then resintall it from the original disks. That will take you back to the original shipping version of Office after which it should update you to the latest version.
Most likely when Microsoft's update software failed it managed to corrupt the Excel program files in such a way that they are no longer usable. So a resintallation of the program is likely the only real option to fix this one.

Major drama's after critical update

I purchased Windows 8 disc in the first 3 months of it being released. When 8.1 became available on line, I installed it also. I had my backups set for monthly and everything was running ok, I say ok, because I have found that Windows 7 seems to be a lot
easier for browsers hence, the internet is faster when using 7. In December I woke up one morning to find my system was turned off, I usually leave it on. Windows 8.1 would not boot, however post was/is fine. I did the usual repair attempts and finally restored
to just before last update. Next critical update attempt (that day) my system crashed. This time I could not restore so i used my system image, which was, at that time, two weeks old. The message I got was that the system image was different architecture and
was invalid. In the end I re-installed. However, I soon found out that my Win 8 disc was an upgrade so i had to start at Win 7 Pro, install with updates, then win 8 with updates, then 8.1. Lesson learnt, I thought, backups weekly WITH sys image weekly.
Fast forward to Feb 2015, critical update and win 8.1 is crashed AGAIN! Same routine only this time I could not get the updates to install for 8. So I re-installed 8, three times! Before updates would install. Because...unless Windows 8 is up to date, it
will NOT let me install Windows 8.1!
Then, this week my OS RAID array (5 x 240GB SandDisk Extreme SSD in RAID 0) failed...install AGAIN! Understandable...errors happen, discs fail, although is unexpected for an SSD less than 8 months old (intermittent failure that I have not gone into yet).
It just made matters feel worse AFTER the first two crashes!
Microsoft advertises that Windows 8.1 AND 10 are/will be free upgrades for those who have purchased 8 however, this is NOT the case because if I have to re-install then I need a product key, my Windows 8 key will not suffice. Can anyone help with this? I
don't see why I should have to pay for an error caused by Microsoft. I run Trend Micro Titanium and Malwarebytes Premium. I try to be proactive with my passwords so i am not suffering from virus, malware etc...but I am VERY frustrated and am for the moment,

As for failuring to install the updates ,have you got any error messages ? We can try the following steps to have a check(Turn off the antivirus software temporarily ):
1.Run "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth " to check the health of the system
2.Run the built-in troubleshoot tool to have a diagnostic:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories\Windows update
3.Clear the windows update cache.
Net stop wuauserv

Blue screen errors - critical updates - XP SP2 SP3 - device drivers

We initially had an internal program error on an XP program that caused it to quit running. We
started getting blue screen errors that I could not resolve.
(painfully) I reinstalled XP sp2 after:
removing the boot partition, ran delux tools (complete) with not errors, repartitioned boot camp
(the long way), reformated the windows partition, (long way).
I went back and forth getting the windows and apple updates after installing XP until it said I only
needed SP3, which I was not yet ready to go to.
I still got errors and crashes, even with no applications running except Norton antivirus (only).
I left the unit on over night and had 24 save dumps in the event viewer. I checked for win updates
again and express said only sp 3 was available. I decided tocheck for custom updates.
Custom told me there were 102 critical updates. I tried to install them. They all downloaded but
98 of them would not install.
I convinced myself I had done something wrong and repeated the process with the same result.
In that the updates would not install, did I really need them or was boot camp/windows misinformed?
I installed sp 3. (boot camp 2.1) Seems to be running OK but with some errors in the eventvwr and
some more crashes.
I compared with another unit and could not replicate the errors. The other unit (same setup) had two user accts. while my broken set up had one that came up right away with reboots.
I added a second user and the crashes (though not all eventvwr errors) went away. Is this another
boot camp/windows xp issue?
I wanted to know how to find which device drivers and which versions I am running. That seems to
relate more directly to blue screen errors if they return.

Hi and welcome to Discussions,
sorry to hear about such a misery.
Sadly Windows XP does not offer such a 'list' of hardware components and associated drivers.
Only way is to use the Device Manager (from Control Panel - System - Hardware) and click through the components to find out which driver version is used.
On a personal sidenote: I would stay away from any kind of Norton products either in Windows and/or OS X.
Searching around in these Forum you will find numerous mentions of problems with Norton products running.
