Ghosting fresh image of OSX W/O Time Capsule

I was wondering if there is a way to either Ghost an Image of OS-X using Symantec or better yet without Symantecs Ghost application such as using a USB External drive for a Bk-Up. I am new to Apple and I know this stuff in relation to a Windows machine but clearly have no clue for an Apple product but I am learning and want to know more. Absolutle a different and more attractive user friendly machine so far. " Less crashes to. LOL!!!" = )- Any and all positive input is welcome and appreciated from anyones experience to accomplish this goal. Also one more thing and it's nothing to do with the topic but when I open my pictures folder all my pics are jumbled one over the other. Is there a way to keep it from being so Chaotic cause man, it bites to highlight all then clean up. I know I'll be posting more information in the fuure so keep an eye out for me and thanks a bunch and have a great one...

There certainly is. In the Mac world we don't have "Ghost", but we do have a number of "cloning" utilities, foremost of which (in my opinion) is the excellent and free Carbon Copy Cloner. It will copy a system to another drive, keeping it bootable. Note that you can only boot from USB using an Intel Mac.
For your second question, if you're talking about opening your Pictures folder (or any other location) in the Finder, you can use View Options to "permanently" set a view. Open the folder, go to Icon View if it's not already active, then go to the menu View - Show View Options, and then customize as you'd like (eg, keep arranged by name, show preview, etc).

Ah, that's a new wrinkle to me.  I haven't tested the Server product, but there are a number of differences.  As far as I can tell, the firmware update solved this for most, but not all, users of standard OSX.
Are you still on Snow Leopard server?  It's quite different from later versions, I understand.
Have you tried selecting the base station, then Base Station > Restart via Aiport Utility's menubar?  That still disconnects everyone, but might work by itself.
Otherwise, sorry, but I'm out of my comfort zone.
Hopefully one of the networking gurus will have an idea or two.

Try just rebooting the TC.. or a reboot of the network..
Turn everything off and restart in correct order.. modem.. TC.. clients. 2min gap.
Try C9 in pondini for that error.

I generally make a nuisance of myself here by suggesting Apple names are more curse than help. Apple automatic naming conventions are causing havoc.. change everything to SMB compatible names.. ie windows networking which is the base common denominator of networking.. ie if it works with SMB it works on any OS.
Short.. less than 20 characters. 10 is usually plenty. Why type more than you need to?
No spaces.. spaces have to be removed even in apple names..
Pure alphanumeric.. some characters cause issues.. again the apostrophe is a nasty item to all other OS.
The -1 is stupid Mountain Lion.
    eg Jeffrey Brown's Time Capsule-1
    Change to JBTC

I,m getting this message, The backup disk image “/Volumes/terry bostock's Time Capsul/terry bostock’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use. What does this mean. I've upgraded to Mountain Lion, but it was ok till recently.

A constant bug in Mountain Lion.
Usually, simply powering off the Time Capsule, waiting a few minutes, and starting it back up will reset the network connection.
    Give that a try first.

  • Backup a dual boot iMac with OSX + Vista to Time capsule and USB hard drive

I have just bought a Time Capsule which is now working as my WiFi Network base station and backs up an iMac and a Macbook. The iMac has both OSX and Vista (using Boot Camp) and I was using a USB Hard Drive that has 2 partitions (HFS+ for the Mac; NTFS for Vista) to back up the iMac. Rather than leave this attached to the iMac just to back up the Vista partition I would like to move it to the Time Capsule's USB port and use it as NAS. The idea being that it becomes a NAS with one partition used to back up the Windows data when I run the iMac with Vista and the other partition to archive the Time Machine backups from both the iMac and Macbook. I tried to connect it as it was but got an error and reading the forum it seems that it won't work unless both partitions are HFS+ or FAT. If I reformat the NTFS partition to HFS+ will I be able to use the built in backup function of Vista to back up the Vista partition to the USB hard drive? I read somewhere else that Time Capsule takes care of the formatting for an external NAS drive and Windows will be able to read and write to it even though it's not NTFS. Any ideas comments appreciated.

This is crude but if you need a work around, just plug the USB drive directly into the iMac.. copy the files to it.. then plug it into the TC.
You also do not need to use the TC as an intermediary between your iMac and MBP.. just turn on sharing in the computer.. so you can directly copy files from one to the other.. Macs have public access directory preconfigured for each user account.
As far as mounting the TC..
In finder use Go, Connect to server.. and type.
    AFP://TCname or TCipaddress
Where TCname is the actual name of the TC.. I strongly recommend you follow SMB network rules.. ie if your TC has a name like
    Fred Blog's Time Capsule 2445566.
It is too long.. it has spaces and it has non-alphanumeric characters.
    Shorten it to FredTC
No spaces no characters that are NOT alphanumeric.
TCIPaddress is simply the standard IP.
You can also use CIFS://TCname which according to the article forces the connection back to SMB1 rather than SMB2 which as usual is broken.
But I would definitely use AFP if possible. I cannot understand the decision to move to SMB as standard.

  • OsX Mavericks and Time Capsule Drive not connecting

    Hi,
I upgraded to Mavericks today and I am now trying to access my 2 TB Time Capsule Hard Drive. I get an error that says: There was a Problem connecting to "XXXX Time Capsule" Server. I also use the Time Capsule for my wireless network, which is working fine. When I go into the AirPort Utility and try to see the Time Capsule info it constantly asks me to put in my password and once I do nothing happens, but the password request appears again in a few minutes. Both my iPhoto and iTunes libraries are stored on my Time Capsule as well as my Time Machine Backups. It has not been able to perform backups either, since it cannot connect to the disk. I am running a MacBook Pro 2010.
Has anyone else had this problem thus far? Is there a workaround for this or an update I should do?
    Thanks!!

    Howdy seanay89,
It sounds like you are unable to make a Time Machine backup becuse the disk is not connecting correctly. I want to recommend these links from the article named:

  • Time capsule problems after OS reinstall

After getting a blue screen on restart I had to do an archive/OS reinstall today. The reinstall worked fine but I am now having problems accessing my Time Capsule.
At first my computer didn't even recognize my time capsule. After restarting my time capsule, my computer recognized it. However, when I tried to open time machine to access the files, it stalled on "connecting to backup volume" for about 45 minutes and never connected. Similarly, the backup stalls on "preparing backup." I tried to stop backing up but it is currently stalled on "stopping backup." Finally, time capsule has disappeared from the menu at the top of my screen.
Any thoughts on addressing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem as well. I did an archive and install with OSX, then updated to 10.5.5 and now all the TC does is spin and say preparing. A sample from the console is

  • How to make more than one partition on Airport Time Capsule?

how to make more than one partition on Airport Time Capsule?

    Only for the very brave......
Open up the Time Capsule (voids the warranty)
    Pull the hard drive
Place the hard drive in a separate enclosure
Connect the enclosure directly to your Mac
Use Disk Utility to partition the hard drive
Reinstall the hard drive back in the Time Capsule
    For the rest of us.....
The next best thing might be to set up one or more disk images on the Time Capsule, which will allow you reserve a given amount of space for each disk image.
Open up Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click on the New Image tab
    Navigate to the Time Capsule
Set up the disk image by naming it and specifying how much space you want to reserve

  • Hard Drive size seems to include Files on time capsule

I recently used Whatsize to measure my hard drive space. I was surprised to see it includes some files i have copied to my time capsule as a backup. This measurement is the same with the about this mac hard drive measurement. Is it usual for these files to be included?

Yes, it should be OK to delete the folder - even if it contains some stuff that never got to the real Time Capsule, they should just be backup files for what should still be on the source drive. Just for added safety, though, don't empty the Trash for a while, until you know that the Time Capsule is functioning properly and you again have two copes of all your stuff.
There may be an additional issue accessing the Time Capsule after you do delete that folder. I'm not familiar with network drives, but in the case of local drives the presence of a ghost folder can cause the real external drive to mount on a path containing an extra number in the volume name. In other words, now, with wi-fi back on, the current paths in the file system might be:
    /Volumes/timecapsule/ - the ghost folder
    /Vollumes/timecapsule 1/ - the real Time Capsule
when you delete the ghost folder and restart, the Time Capsule will now be able to mount "normally",
    /Volumes/timecapsule
It's possible, though, that Time Machine and Deja Vue will still be looking for their backup targets at /Volumes/timecapsule 1/, a path which no longer exists, and will thus be unable to find the files on their previous backups. You could probably check for this in Time Machine just by entering it. If this does happen, I think you could probably recover just by re-choosing the target disk in Time Machine and in Deja Vu, but I don't really know the inner workings of Time Machine.
Again, this may not be an issue at all, but it's something to be aware of.

  • Backup to time capsule very long

I had a backup issue and had to delete the computer sparsebubdle image and backup again.
Time Capsule is 2T, available 1.60T. I need to backup 950G and it is VERY slow. Is has backed up only 75G in 2 days and it estimates to need 20 more days   Is it a normal spped? If not what should I do?
    thanks, Cris

Do you mean the TC (Time Capsule) and not TM (Time Machine)?
When you say the iMac is directly connected to the TC (your TM) do you mean it is phyiscally connected to the iMac by USB or Firewire cable? Or that the iMac is Wired to your internet Router and or Time Capsule by Ethernet cable. Because one it totally different then the other.
At most I get around 85 to 100+ MBs (that is Mega Bytes a Second) going over my Gigabit Ethernet LAN from one computer to another both with FAST drivers in them. When going from one of my computers to another that is older and has slower drivers sometimes I only get 35-50 MBs transfers.
If you take both of those numbers and divide them into your total 950GBs of data the time to transfer all of it would be DAYS if not weeks.
You are backing up 950GBs. That is Nine Hundred Fifty "Billion" Bytes (Nine Hundred Fifty "Thousand" "Million" Bytes) (950000, Million) of data. At any of the normal current transfer rates available to the Home and Small Business market, at a reasonal price, that transfer is goiing to take what you are seeing.
Even if you had a 2 or 3 Terabyte (That is Trillion or 1 thousand Billion) external connected directly to your Mac, even at USB 3 speeds or Thunderbolt speeds, the transfer would take almost as long. If you only had USB 2 speeds it would take longer. So no don't disconnect it just let it run.
But I suggest you go through all the files you have and find some you don't need or that you can off load to an external drives that do not need to be on your internal Mac hard drive. 950GBs of Data is a whole lot of Data.
I've been usiing computers for over 20 years and have most every file I have ever created, and do a lot of photography, along with tons of Work files and don't have near that much data on any of my computers.

  • My iMac Mac OS X v 10.7.4 won't recognize time capsule

I just bought a time capsule, my iMac can see it when I reset the settings on iMac and I can get through most of the stages to configuring it, but then at the end an unexpected error pops up and boots the time capsule set up out.
Once it gets booted out, my mac can't find it, unless i reset the time capsule again and the whole process starts over.
I made sure that my airport was up to date, it is. Does anybody know how to solve this problem?

I checked the pondini fixes and ended up doing the following - in case this could help someone else with an iMac, OSX Lion, and Time Capsule... http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
First, I downloaded and used Airport Utility 5.6 instead of 6.1 - BTW, I had to attempt download and installation THREE times before the program actually installed.  Be persistant.
Pondini #5: It's possible some names (of all things!) may be a problem.    See item C9.  I had to re-name my Mac, Time Capsule, network, etc... to remove all apostrophes and spaces.
Pondini #7:  If you have WD SmartWare installed on Lion, it's not compatible, per RoaringApps, and there are reports it can cause this problem as well.   Use Western Digital's uninstaller, or delete the app from /Applications and the files com.wdc.WDDMservice.plist and com.wdc.WDSmartWareServer.plist from /Library/LaunchDaemons.   There may also be a file in Library/Application Support.
I then had to shut down computer, unplug Time Capsule, unplug modem; plug everything in again, then reboot computer; then had to go to Apple- System Preferences- Network- and reselect my Time Capsule to connect to WiFi again.
Then opened Time Machine preferences again and attempted back up - it worked!
