Grub not reading my partitions
Hi all,
I'm trying to install Arch Linux alongside my Windows 7 partition. Using gparted I created two partitions, one for the ext4 filesystem and the other for the swap. In the installation, when I arrived to preparing the hard drive, I chose "Manually Configure block devices, filesystems and mountpoints". I selected the partitions I needed and went along.
My partition table (using sudo fdisk -l)
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 1 13757 110503071 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sdb2 * 13758 15539 14313915 83 Linux
/dev/sdb3 15540 15669 1044225 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sdb4 15670 30401 118334790 7 HPFS/NTFS
sdb1 is my Windows 7 partition, sdb2 is Arch installation parition, sdb3 is swap, and sdb4 is a data partition for Windows.
Then I installed Grub to /dev/sdb, following the documentation advice and not installing to sdb#.
When I came to reboot, the Grub menu loaded but when I hit Arch Linux or Arch Linux Fallback, I get this error:
"root (hd1,1)
error 22: No such partition"
I don't get it, root (hd1,1) means sdb2, right?
Here's the contents of my menu.lst grub file:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Arch Linux
root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/12bc8088-7ccd-4449-88e1-9e848862f9f8 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
# (1) Arch Linux

root (hd1,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/12bc8088-7ccd-4449-88e1-9e848862f9f8 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26-fallback.img
# (2) Windows
#title Windows
#rootnoverify (hd0,0)
#makeactive
#chainloader +1
(windows is commented out for now)
And this is the contents of my fstab file:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information
# <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
devpts /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
shm /dev/shm tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
#/dev/cdrom /media/cd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/dvd /media/dvd auto ro,user,noauto,unhide 0 0
#/dev/fd0 /media/fl auto user,noauto 0 0
UUID=12bc8088-7ccd-4449-88e1-9e848862f9f8 / ext4 defaults 0 1
UUID=c559a08d-2440-4149-95cb-928202048338 swap swap defaults 0 0
I reinstalled Arch yesterday using UUID to see if I'd still get the error, and yes, I did still get it. I should say that the Arch partition (sdb2) has the boot flag on it...might have something to do with it, I dunno.
Anyone know anything about this? I read through the documentation and I couldn't find anything that helped me out apart from arranging the order of the partition table with fdisk.
Thanks,
Mike

[Solved] Grub not showing windows partition
Hey all,
So I tried setting up my Win7/Arch dual boot system yesterday and I think I got the partitions right (correct me if I made any mistakes), but GRUB was not showing my main windows partition. I went into the menu.lst file and uncommented what I thought was my windows partition, but turned out to be my Samsung recovery partition. After a reboot, Grub now won't even load and automatically reboots the computer on failing. I'm sure that once I can figure out how to get back into that config file from my installer CD, I will be able to re-comment that windows entry, but I still am unsure how to get it to recognize my main windows partition.
Here are the partitions:
Name Flags Part Type FS type [Label] Size
sda1 (Boot) Primary ntfs [RECOVERY] 16GB
sda2 Primary ntfs [SYSTEM] 104MB
sda3 Primary ntfs 372GB (main windows7 partition)
sda5 Logical ext2 [root] 15GB
sda6 Logical swap [swap] 4GB
sda7 (Boot) Logical ext2 [boot] 100 MB
sda8 Logical ext3 92GB (home Linux partition)
Thanks for your help

Then I changed the windows line to "rootnoverify (hd0,1)," also with no luck. Grub still tries to load but crashes and reboots the system before presenting me with any options.
Here are the options, if this helps at all.

GRUB not loading, all partitions (including /boot) still present
I tried to set up Ubuntu on another HDD to boot alongside Windows and Arch, and now all that happens when I power my machine up is "Loading Operating Systems..." being displayed indefinitely. To complicate things, I have 3TB of data locked up with LUKS+LVM. I booted to a live disc, and the crypted partitions, along with /boot is still there.
Ubuntu sees the crypted partition, but when I give it my password to decrypt and mount it, it gives an error "unknown filesystem type: 'crypto_LUKS'"
Any ideas to get BIOS to see the boot partition again?Try taking a look at

SSAS 2008 R2 reading all partitions
Hi<o:p></o:p>
The report is very slow and we see in sql profiler SSAS reading all year partitions even we filter with one month and report is very slow. The
cube partitions are monthly. The cube size is around 150GB. A measure column is Last Non empty. The
cube performance is very slow. We read prefetching article and we tried the options no luck. How can we restrict not reading all partitions? Any help/suggestions
Thanks
SreeniHi Sreeni,
I hope I am wrong but I think sorting out this type of issue remotely is very difficult.
The book I can recommend is; -
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Analysis Services
Unleashed
The only other generic advice I can give is to narrow down the problem domain. In this case this means; -
1) Creating a separate copy of your BIDS SSAS solution with a minimum number of dimensions and a single measure group with two partitions.
2) Think of any other way you can make your separate copy of your BIDS SSAS solution as simple as possible whilst still being able to demonstrate the issue of unexpected partition scans, e.g. remove calculated members from your single measure group.
The likely outcome of this is that you are likely to be closer to a resolution. The worst case scenario is that you would need to contract a third party on site consultant where your joint efforts would be much more focused.
In short by creating a stripped down version of your cube you are much more likely to identify the specific area of your cube design which is causing the unexpected scans.
I hope this helps,
Kind Regards,
Kieran.

ERROR:Could not read archive file - during Processing Base System Part 2
Hi there,
What I have:
* I have problem with installation of the Mac OS X Panther v10.3 on iMac.
* I have 3 original CDs (black with silver X).
What I did:
* I made new 1 partition and formated disk as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) over the Disk Utility in the first CD as normal without additional options (if I tried to format disk with zero all data and 8 way random write format after 3 days computer freeze)
* I verified disk over this utility - that was ok - HFS volume verifed.
* Then I restarted the computer and ran installation from this first CD
What happened:
* installation did not finish, because there were some problems during installation process.
* i tried to customize installation just for essential work (without other languages support, printers etc), but it was still the same problem
Installation log:
After I choosed installation type, there was first error, but it did not look like important.. - root: bootstraplookup(): unknown error code

It seems like a problem with reading some data from the CD, but during the installation checking of disk was ok.. maybe it can be problem with the cd-rom..? Or problem with data on cd-rom - I mean bad archive file..? But it is original CD.. What do you think??

Windows error message "Setup could not read the CD you inserted..."
I partitioned my Macbook HD using bootcamp assistant and allowed 32GB for the partition. Then I tried installing windows using the assistant. I only get as far as verifying the windows CD (not far as which file system to use FAT32 or NTFS). Then I receive the error message, "Setup could not read the CD you inserted, or the CD is not a vaild windows CD." I am using the Windows XP Service Pack 2 version - not an upgrade. Also I tried booting up straight to the CD but that did not help either. Any suggestions?
Please disregard my question. Although my Windows XP Pro documentation and folder did not say upgrade I just looked at the CD for the tenth time and just saw Upgrade printed on the CD. I'm not making excuses but the holographic images make the CD a little hard to read. Sorry for the trouble. I guess I will be going out and buying the full version now.

Actually, I first meet this issue by following step.

write the partition table and raise the above error.
I don't get any error when writing the table to an nbd.
It's probably not relevant, but I load the nbd module manually with "modprobe nbd nbds_max=2 max_part=4"
I really load that module.
I also tried losetup file, it also raised error when write the partition info.
So i think whether i forget some module or service which is used by hot re-partition. -

Yes, did. Same result.
Sanity Check: Is it booting from LiveUSB/CD? I would not expect HDT/Reboot or Power Off entries from a generated grub config. I would expect those entries from a LiveUSB/CD.
From system itself, but tried all options (I knew) like 1) using fallback to install LTS and run commands, 2) live-CD, 3) kernel parameter systemd.unit etc
No worries, I am giving up on issue for some time.
EDIT:
Thanks

Xfce4 not detecting other partitions[SOLVED]
I have installed arch linux with xfce4, wine, java, libreoffice, opera and some other packages. The system is working well. However, I am not able to solve following problem:
The file manager is not showing other partitions of the disk drive. I think they can be added in /etc/fstab file but is it possible for system to detect them and show them so that I can mount them if I need to (as I have seen in other desktop environments like gnome on ubuntu and kde on slackware)?
I have tried to check the arch wiki (which helped a lot while installing all of the above) but not able to find solution. Please guide me in the right direction. I am really impressed by Arch linux and all the experts must have worked very hard to produce this fine distribution.
Last edited by rnarch (2012-04-10 14:03:09)exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4
It worked well. I can now access all partitions.
However, if I open thunar directly, I can see all partitions on the left sided pane. Here, I have to click to mount the partitions. This mounts but gives a message that I do not have permission to open this partition. Then I have to give command 'sudo thunar' . This instance of thunar does not show any partitions on the left sided pane but if I can open the /media folder and access all mounted partitions. Why does 'sudo thunar' does not show any partitions on left sided pane? -
Partition pruning not working for partitioned table joins
Hi,
We are joining 4 partitioned tables on partition column & other key columns. And we are filtering the driving table on partition key. But explain plan is showing that all tables except the driving table are not partition pruning and scanning all partitions. Is there any limitation that filter condition cannot be dynamic?
Thanks a lot in advance.

Could not read boot block (input/output errror) powerbook g4
Hello
My friend gave me a powerbook g4 and a copy of osx lion, I would like to install it but the internal hardive is not available within the "select Destination" area of the installation process. I tried to repair the disk which is labelled Disk0s1, but shortly after it is underway i recieve this message.
**/dev/disk0s1 could not read boot block (input/output error) Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. 1 non HFS volume checked, 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
Within disk utilities the Disk01s is grey, I can try to repair it but the above error occurs. Do you know what the problem is and how I can fix it?Since you are going to install system fresh, it sounds like, you should erase the drive. Boot from the installer disc, then select the language but do not start the installer. From the menu bar, you should have either an Applications or an Installer menu. From one of the menus, you can then start Disk Utility.
From the drives and volumes pane, select the internal drive hardware listing.
This will now allow you to partition or erase the disc. Now click the Erase tab and select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as the format and then click the "Erase" button. You can name the volume that will actually be created, like for instance "MacintoshHD" or whatever you want.)
Once the erase has completed, you need to check the information for the hard drive at the bottom of the window. Be sure that the partition scheme is Apple Partition Map. If for some reason it is something else, like GUID, you won't be able to install MacOS on it. You will need to click the Partition tab, click the "Options..." button and select Apple Partition Map, then click the "Partition" button.
Once this is done, then you can quit Disk Utility and you should be able to install Tiger on that HD. -
"NOT" statements in partitioning?
Can you use NOT statements in Partition Areas?I used member select whilst designing my partition area. In my source, I want to select all accounts, but not level zero and not any members beginning with a certain character string, say "AB*"The syntax by the partition manager came out with:( @IDESCENDENTS("Account") AND ( @LEVMBRS("Account","Lev0,Account") AND @MATCH("Account","ab*")))i.e. no "NOT" statement!!I tried various ways of getting the "not" into the syntax, all of which work in other areas of Essbase but can't seem to get a Verify in Partition Manager. Can this be done. If so, does anyone have the correct syntax. Thanks in advance.(V6.5)
Just this morning I attempted the same thing. With no luck, Member Selection evaluates the NOT correctly but Partitioning does not. I have submitted it as a bug.Corey BidmeadClarity [email protected]
