Half way through update and shuts down?

My mac gets half way through an update and then shuts down, suggestions anyone?

Hi WSMW,
If you are having issues with an OS X update, you may want to take a look at the troubleshooting steps in the following article (it specifies 10.6 and earlier, but the steps should be similar for all OS updates):
Apple Support: Troubleshooting Mac OS X installation and software updates (Mac OS X v10.6 and earlier)

  • My laptop won't restart? The bar at the bottom of the gray screen starts to fill up but half way through, my computer shuts down?

My macbook pro 2009 started freezing, so I tried to turn it off and back on, but it wouldn't get off of the gray screen. I went to utilities and tried to repair my disc but it said it couldn't be repaired and that leaves me here with a gray screen, a new bar at the bottom, and random shut downs.

If you reformat the drive, then everything on the computer will be deleted. If you cannot access the hard drive at all in order to backup your work, it will all be lost.
That statement means that if you are trying to reinstall Lion or later, then the installer is going to verify that you own the software by requesting your Apple ID and passwword.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks or Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
OS X Mavericks- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Erase and reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Erase and reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Windows 8/8.1 - No Option for "Install Updates and Shut Down"

We’ve got a handful of Windows 8 workstations and I’ve noticed that users don’t get the “Install Updates and Shut Down” option when they shut their systems down. Nor do they get the updates icon in the notification area.
Instead, all they get is the following message at the logon screen:
There is no way I can expect my users to do this.
I need to ensure that the updates are installed when the user shuts down.
There must be a way of configuring Group Policy to allow Windows 8 workstations to prompt to install updates when the user shuts down.
I cannot implement an option whereby updates are installed automatically without the user being aware. If updates start installing automatically then there is the potential for loss of work if a user is away from their desk for a long period of time and
their system just restarts to complete the installation.
Our current group policy settings are below. This works fine for the Windows 7 workstations.
I presume others have experienced this? Can anyone offer any guidance?
    Thanks

I am sorry but this is NOT an answer.
You're correct. It's not. Microsoft has some overzealous contractors who seem to think any response is "the answer". I've unmarked the post, because, in fact, it was merely "additional information" which may or may not have addressed the
    original issue.
I, like the original poster, have several computers that do NOT offer 'Install Updates' in any of the power menus and definitely do NOT install the updates during either a restart or a shutdown.
Now *THAT* is an entirely *DIFFERENT* situation than what the Original Poster has offered here, so the appropriate thing for you to do is to start a NEW THREAD and fully describe the environment and symptoms of the problem and what you've done (if anything)
to try to identify, isolate, or remediate the undesirable behavior.
The PCs I have are Windows 8.1 installed from a partner copy of Windows 8 and upgraded.
I'm intrigued with this "partner copy of Windows 8" thing. Have you asked "the partner" what they customized in the installation image before you actually installed the product???
Can someone please offer a SOLUTION as opposed to parroting what SHOULD happen.

  • Dreaded SP3 "Install Updates and Shut Down"?

Help!  My t400 just started insisting as a default choice "install updates and shut down" when I try to shut down.
It used to just go with the last thing I chose - so if I hit the off botton last time and said restart, that would pop up this time.
NOW, it wants to "install updates." What updates? I did something in windows update that was supposed to block the installation of Service Pack 3, but now I'm scared to death that SP3 is trying to hijack my machine.
Is there a way to a) find out exactly what updates it wants to install, and b) go back to how things were - when I hit the power botton my last shut down choice (sleep, restart etc) is what comes up?????
    Thanks!

My film I rented from iTunes has frozen half way through downloading and won't finish downloading, any ideas?

TRy to close itunes by double tapping the home button then slide up all of the open apps and try again.
another option is to turn off your ipad, logout from your itunes account and try again downloading the movie. If it still gives you error, call apple support and ask for itunes agent to see if there is something wrong with the movie you are trying to download

  • HT201272 songs quit half way through playing and next song begins

I just downloaded an album and each song quits half-way through and the next song begins  playing on pc computer

Other people have been having similar problems with songs over a number of days.
Depending upon what country that you are in (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) then try deleting those tracks from your iTunes library and redownload them via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page on your computer's iTunes : re-downloading.
If you aren't in a country where you can re-download music or if they re-download in the same state then try the 'report a problem' link from your purchase history : log into your account on your computer's iTunes via Store > View My Account and you should then see a Purchase History section with a 'see all' link to the right of it ; click on that and you should see a list of your purchases ; find those songs and use the 'Report a Problem' link.

  • Windows 8.1 Pro Workstations - Not Getting "Install Updates and Shut Down" notification for new updates

We've got a small handful of Windows 8.1 Pro workstations on our domain (SBS 2008).
The workstations show up in the WSUS Console list along with the details of how many updates need to be installed.
On the Windows 8.1 Pro workstations, at the logon screen they display "Important Updates Are Available. Go to PC Settings to install them".  If we go to PC Settings or Windows Updates via Control Panel the updates show as awaiting installation.
However, we can't rely on users to go into PC Settings or Control Panel to install Windows Updates. We need them to be installed as per Windows 7 and Windows XP - whereby when the user shuts down their workstations it displays the message "Install Updates
    and Shutdown".
Currently the Windows 8.1 Pro workstations do not show this - if you choose to shut down there are no update installation messages and the workstations simply shut down.
Has anyone else encountered this? What needs to be done?
    Thanks in advance.
I don't work for Microsoft - I just use their products.

    It does sound weird yes.
Id like to try and mirror your setup in my lab.
What settings do you have in your WSUS GPO?
Have you seen this, in the 'Configure Automatic Updates' setting?
On Windows 8 and later, you can set updates to install during automatic maintenance instead of a specific schedule. Automatic maintenance will install updates when the computer is not in use, and avoid doing so when the computer
is running on battery power. If automatic maintenance is unable to install updates for 2 days, Windows Update will install updates right away. Users will then be notified about an upcoming restart, and that restart will only take place if there is no potential
    for accidental data loss.
Automatic maintenance can be further configured by using Group Policy settings here: Computer Configuration->Administrative Templates->Windows Components->Maintenance Scheduler

  • A305-S6845 Running Way Too Hot and Shutting Down

Greetings!  Has anyone else had a problem with a Toshiba Satellite running so hot that it shuts down all by itself at least once per day?  That is what mine is doing.  The fan seems to be running fine and there is no dust or anything like that in the way.
How can I cool this thing down?  Around 60 minutes after startup, it is so hot that it is uncomfortable on my palms to use it.  It will normally run super hot like that for several hours and then shut down automatically, presumably to keep itself from melting or something.
    Thanks in advance!

Could be hair and lint in the processor heatsink or perhaps the thermal compound between the heatsink and processor has dried out.
Have it serviced by a competent shop.  If you are feeling brave, DIY following the instructions here:

  • 4s stuck half way through update

I started the update last night- connected to my Mac. This morning i still have the black screen with the apple logo and the update bar is only halfway through loading. It seems stuck there. I cant turn the phone off and there are no messages.  Advice please...

Try resetting the phone - disconnect phone from Mac, then press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button and Home button. Kepp them prssed down till you see Apple logo. This will reboot device. Same thing happened to me on my iPod touch - after resetting device, I was able to get into Settings and confirm that the update actually did install.

  • Windows 7 cycles through updates on shut down (all the time)

i have been having a devil of a time with my mac pro and am hoping this forum might have some leads on a problem.
i have a first generation mac pro and an installation of windows 7 using parallels and every time i use windows 7 it cycles through a windows update procedure. this is a minor pain now which takes about five minutes but in the past it was a very long procedure.
i recently had to re-install this setup due to a WD HD with "bad sectors" and i would like to solve this problem.
    can anyone advise?
    TIA
P.S. I had to use "Jowie's" method to install windows 7 on this computer. i am running Lion 10.7.5.
P.P.S. apologies for the apparently off-topic post but i have not gotten any leads on this on the windows forums or from the boot camp forums and i am almost at a total loss at this point in terms of getting this OS on this computer to work.

you like me face the problems post Vista SP1 with 64-bit versions.
Modifying and using Imgburn via Jowie is best I know of to get it to boot and install.
There are always issues with native Boot Camp Windows updates and a VM like Parallels as to whether you can or should apply any update whatsoever in a VM or stick to doing so natively.
Always have a backup image to restore from for ANY OS.
Paragon Software Camp Tune and the great Hard Disk Mgr 12 Suite which will perform an "Clone OS" migration to another disk drive.
For convenience never share a hard drive with Mac and Windows. Esp. for you and I. Dedicated drive only.
WD Lifeguard in Windows is great at mapping out bad sectors.
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to image your Mac and the Recovery partition to another drive also.
You would then never ever have to reinstall any or either.
There are people on the Boot Camp forum where I burned out that you and I well... we've been over this before to the point I stopped and left.
Apple's BootCamp 4.0 64-bit from my attepms (I run Windows 8) will not install and I guess needs CMD.exe and direct it at Apple installer MSI program or Setup. I would not normally and not needed except for data and time and the Boot Camp Startup  Manager in Windows.

  • My iMac updates at startup with the logo then once it's done it shuts down. So I restart it and it just restarts the update and shuts down again. Any one know why?

So I don't know why my iMac is doing this. It's a late 2009 model I believe. I was literally working perfectly fine a few minutes before this. I decided to reboot my Mac and this update started and I can't seem to get out of it. And I've rebooted several times and this update never seems to finish.
The most recent update as I usually update when the new ones come out..
None the less does anyone know why this is happening?

Okay. So the third or forth time resetting all those things didn't work. So I started up in safe mode. And currently it's spinning with a circle with the cross logo.
I have it running off an external hard drive. I think it's due to to that nhence the logo.
So I'll just let it sit he unless there's a way you know to make it pick up right away.
