HDV 720p60 Native Editing

Hi,
I would like to capture and edit HDV @ 720p60 natively, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do this in Final Cut Pro. Even if I set the project up to use the Apple Intermediary Codec, I still have to render all of my clips before I can use them. Ideally I would like to retain the timecode, but if I have to use the intermediary codec, can someone point out how I might be able to edit @60 fps with it?
Thanks so much.

I can setup for 720p30, Are you sure this isn't right for you. Are you sure you shoot 60 frames of HDV. Please give more details including versions of OS,FC, QT and computer, and camera/decks involved.

  • Why don't iMovie support native HDV capture and editing?

i would like to see iMovie HD 6 to support native HDV capture and edit. is it possible?

no, FCE-HD (what an abreviation!) uses the same trick as iM-HD, converting HiDef into AIC....
native HD is really more for the pros... yet! I think, the basic problem to be solved first is -r media, meaning, any HD/blue-ray-DVD-r disks, which make it possible for the average user to store his/her products.... but as far as I follow the discussion, right now the industry is caring more for commercial disks, and that HDMI "problem" (broadcasting can include a copyprotection, so no use of any HD/DVD HiDef recorders...!)... finally, we can record only our selfmade movies... maybe that's a little less joy...
actually, converting finished HDmovies into h264 with a high bitrate and storing that onto hd is the only realistic option........

  • HDV 720p60

I have been asked to edit using the sequence HDV 720p60, but that sequence setting is not available in FCP. (I'm working in Studio2 by the way.) Is there another sequence setting they're really referring to?

What version? I see it right there in the easy setups...FCP 6.0.4.

  • FCP support of HDV 720p60?

I recently acquired a JVC GY-HD250 HDV camcorder. So far so good, except for one thing. The HD 250 shoots HDV 720p60 but FCP 5.1.2 does not offer capture support for HDV 720p60. Does anyone out there know if an FCP patch or upgrade is in the works from Apple to provide capture support for native HDV 720p60 video?
If that answer is "no," is there a good, FCP compatible third-party application that will support capture of native HDV 720p60?
    Thank you.

jvc and final cut pro do not get along. you're going to have to use (buy) hdvxdv and use it to import from your jvc deck.

  • HDV 720p60 VS HDV 720p30??

This one should be easy but I have forgotten what all of those numbers mean. I noticed that when I try to use media manager to recompress a project using HDV 720p60 the project size ends up being half the size of the project if I were to use HDV 720p30. I always thought that these two aren't that different from each other after all. Can someone please explain why such difference between the two file sizes?
I would really appreciate it. Thanks!

  • Ideal export format for hdv source movie edited in motion

Until recently, pretty much all completed projects I've done have been exported to NTSC-DV, but now I'm editing in HDV.
My most recent project was done with 1920X1080 HDV source footage editing on a 1280X720 canvas in Motion.
I like to export a web version and then a version of the project for posterity -- ie. the final best-quality (within reasonable final size) version of the movie that I can keep on hand for future uses as yet unknown.
So, my question then is: what's a good final format to export to? Is there any reason to export to HDV just because I've started with HDV?
    Thanks.

I use h.264 for a review copy. It will give you a much smaller file size. I think Pro Res is intended to be used as a lossless format to take footage between applications, correct me if I'm wrong. If all you need is a copy to show people, h.264 can give you excellent quality (it's used on Blu-ray discs).

  • Native HDV versus Cineform editing - noticeable quality losses?

    Hi folks.
Is it me or Premiere CS3 feels more happy editing native HDV versus Cineform? With HDV it just renders A LOT faster and the program seems to run better (less stutter). The only downside is that it takes forever to load the project (versus Cineform) and the mastering output choices are smaller.
I really like Cineform, but in my computer it just asks too much patience(Win XP SP3 + P4 775 3.06 + 1024 RAM).
Editing in HDV, the quality is really that sacrified???? My editing routine consists of dissolves, magic bullet looks and classic effects.
What is your opinion? Thank you guys :)

    Thank you Steven.
Cineform does not render only if you use their effects. But if you need Magic Bullet Looks or GenArts Sapphire the story changes. I did some little test:
HD clip 1920x1080 50i of 4:10 seconds with "Basic White Diffusion" Magic Bullet effect takes to render:
    01:30 minutes in CFHD
    00:50 seconds in HDV
Can I export my HDV project to Cineform in order to preserve quality? What other options do I have?

  • HDV mixed format editing and mastering for broadcast TV

    Hi
I have HDV blues with regards mixed format and multi time base.
Any help advice will be greatly appreciated.
I have never handled HDV in multiformat and multiple timebase to Mater and output for Broadcast television.
I am hoping to master to DVD directly on the configuration ( details provided below ) to deliver to NTSC and PAL market for DVD retail.
However I would need to take to a post house, one or more quicktime file to Output to Digital Betacam for television broadcast for both NTSC and PAL formats.
    with regards
problems I am facing are on two fronts:
    1) I am unsure of best quality and workflow to output master on Digital Betacam tape for broadcast TV in NTSC and PAL both formats.
    2) With sequence set at HDV 1080 50i, and export setting as current setting, upon render and export of self contained quicktime direct from FCP timeline I face few troubling symptoms;
    - that the quicktime exports 3mins to 35 minutes of qt clip but not the whole program of 90 minutes as one clip. System crashes and I have to reboot.
    - Another symptom is that by doing above my time line shows aduio as out of sync to video. here i see that Audio tracks A1,A2 as being torn apart at cut edit points and have gap of 1 frame at random ( but not on all edit points ).
A3, A4 and other music and sound fx tracks have slipped off sync by few frames , again at random and also other places the edit comes back in sync with audio.
    - Of course I am having to re- render this sequence timeline a zillion times even though the previously rendered files still exist in relevant folder.
    Program duration: 90 minutes
    current sequence : 1440 x 1080 at 50i
edit sequence time-line consists following source material directly ingested from tape via firewire in native HDV and DV:
    VIDEO
    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 50i
    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 60i
    -PAL footage standard and widescreen
    -NTSC footage standard and widescreen
    - still images

Hi guys, thanks for getting back to me. My client has now changed her mind and so I'm just mixing XDCAM and HDV 16:9 footage which is absolutely fine. Awesome. Thanks for your help!
I have one issue - some of the XDCAM footage she has given me is .MP4 video (actually each clip is a folder with 5 files in it (.MP4, .SMI, .PPN, .XML, .BIM). Do I have to convert the .MP4 into .MOV via Compressor to work with it (presumably this will compress it somewhat) or can I convert it simply and losslessly somehow (perhaps using sony XDCAM software?)
    Thanks again for any help!

  • Use java edition and native edition at same time in a single java app

    Hi
I have a situation where I need to use both versions of berkeley Db at the same time. I have an external library that I use that requires the Java edition and my own code that uses the native version. Unfortunately the source code of the library is not available and I don't want to redesign my program to use the Java edition.
Some packages in je.4.0.103.jar and db.jar (version 5.1) contain the same naming structure and same classes eg. com.sleepycat.persist.EntityStore. I removed the duplicated packages in je.4.0.103.jar However it seems that the implementation is slightly different between the two version as I get
    java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: com.sleepycat.persist.EntityStore.<init>(Lcom/sleepycat/je/Environment;Ljava/lang/String;Lcom/sleepycat/persist/StoreConfig;)V
When I simply had both versions available my code for the native version kept using the packages from the Java edition and the external library kept on using the native version and as a result I got loads of runtime errors.
So how do I tell them apart. The problem is because both sets of packages have identical names and class names so Java does not know which ones to use. I am using eclipse so maybe there is some option where I can tell certain classes to use certain packages.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
We don't officially support using BDB and BDB JE from the same JVM process.
It's possible to work around this limitation by creating two [url http://download.oracle.com/javase/1.4.2/docs/api/java/lang/ClassLoader.html] Java Classloaders  that load one of the two jar files. When calling BDB or BDB JE methods, the call must be bracketed with calls like this that cause the correct classloader to be used:
    ClassLoader saveLoader = Thread.currentThread().getContextClassLoader();
    Thread.currentThread().setContextClassLoader(/* specify correct loader for BDB or BDB JE here */);
    try {
// do something with BDB or BDB JE
    } finally {
      Thread.currentThread().setContextClassLoader(saveLoader);
}We are not experts on classloaders and we don't have an example of doing this. We have not done it ourselves, we only know that users have done it.
    I hope this helps.

  • Pic image size & dpi with HDV/DVCPro HD editing

I'm editing HDV footage that is being converted to DVCproHD 1920 x 1080 at 60i. My concern is that I am scanning some photos to go with this project and I am used to the specifications for SD/DV editing; 720 x 480 at 72dpi. But what are the best aspect ratio settings for images when using them in 1920 x 1080? Can they be much larger in width & height and at a higher dpi? What is the max dpi I should use and what is the best format for rendering times? I normally use jpg, pict or png. Will TIFF and TARGA render faster?

See your previous post for answers regarding file dimensions. PNG usually works very smoothly in FCP, but I also like PSD (photoshop). Again make sure they are RGB, not CMYK.

  • HDV to be edited elsewhere

    Hello all!
I have a client with 40 HDV NTSC tapes. He wants to put them on a hard drive and send the drive(s) out to be edited elsewhere. The only problem is we don't know what they're going to be editing on over there so the Apple Intermediate Codec probably isn't going to be an option.
We've had limited exposure here to HDV and I was wondering how Final Cut 4.5 HD captures HDV material. Will it be a format where no matter what they're editing on they'll be able to bring it in lossless like if I were to do it in SD DV? Any reccomendations will be gladly received and thanks in advance for your replies!
    -Jim

On the first question, I am not for sure if FCP 4.5 supports HDV or not. I thought it began in 5, but there is someone else who can answer that question better than I, as I haven't worked with HDV as of yet.
The second question is kind of a catch 22. You can always export the footage, once it is in your editor, as just about anything. But say the other editor is using PP, for example. You can export the footage as a QT file, PP will accept this format, but will have to render it. And if you export it as an AVI, and they use FCP they will have to render it or export it as a QT file to save themelves from having to render the entire timeline all the time. So it boils down to a toss up on exported formats. But maybe someone else here has a better work around.
    Hope I helped some...

  • Right settings for HDV and PAL editing

I will be editing a HDV piece and I want to use the Apple Intermediate codec. What are the precise settings when capturing? is the pixel aspect ratio square or PAL and do I need to set the Field Dominance to lower like with DV. Please any advice. Thanks

I just noticed that you're cutting on a PowerBook, so that totally makes sense. I'm working on an HDV project where I'm capturing in HDV then recompressing to DVCPRO HD, then doing a final output to DigiBeta. I have a Decklink card so I can convert HD to SD for output.
Cutting in DVCPRO HD is basically the same as cutting in the Apple Intermediate Codec. All the effects and playback work in real time, all the frames are complete, etc.

  • AVCHD or HDV for your Editing?

    Hi,
when come to the Editing stage, which is the format that you work pretty well and easier, HDV or AVCHD?

what media are you using? solid sate? (non-tape)?
I use use HDV (SONY V1E) and AVCHD (CANON HF100) but edit both in ProRes. ProRes is a very high quality editing codec, up to about 145Mb/s or 225Mb/s (HQ) which is going to be way more than your source footage. You can only ingest material as ProRes not ProRes (HQ).. but this wont be an issue as mentioned above.
Once your material is ingested FCP will auto detect your sequence settings once you start to place your clips in the timeline.
Tip (slightly off topic): Check your sequence Render settings: bit depth, if you are working with high qulaity graphics or serious about colour correction best to use the higher 10bit setting (from 8bit or RGB), and set your render quality to BEST (from Normal).

  • Workflow suggestions HDV to DV edit

I'm not sure if there is better way to do this so I'll ask here. Shot a show recently in HD (Sony Z1U) and brought it into my system through the Sony HVR M10U downconverting through the deck for DV.
What capture settings are optimal and what project settings should I be using? This is going to be ouput to DVD.
Shot a few weeks ago in SD 16:9 and had no issues. There seems to be a difference in the screen real estate used.
    Thanks

I've just completed a project with pretty much that same issues: HDV on a Sony V1U with the eventual target DVD (SD, anamorphic widescreen). My computer is a G5 Quad running FCS 2 and OS X 10.4.9.
I captured in HDV using HDV60i preset and edited that way; I have no "green screen" type of editing to do: mostly cuts, opacity ramps, and some very minor color and "brightness" corrections. I then "rendered" which was mostly conforming (about 1.5 times real time on my computer), then exported "reference." I used compressor to do the down-rezzing to SD using mpeg2 4.5-7.0 "best quality, two pass" and AC3 2.0 (stereo). The result looks better than on older project using a Sony PDX10 DV.
I had some issues using ProRes422HD: jaggies. Maybe it was my work flow since I used Quicktime to do the conversions on some test footage, but they looked TERRIBLE. Maybe compressor would do better, or setting up a ProRes422 sequence. But the cost is LOTS of disk space compared to HDV.
I have tried the Bonzai solution in the past with FCS 1 and it did help; with FCS 2, it seems that compressor has solved it's little problem with resolution transcoding. I like to avoid converting to DV either in the computer or using the camera because you drop to 4:1:1 color space and that really hurts the video quality. Staying with HDV (or DVCPRO HD or DVCPRO50 or ProRes 422 are supposed to be even better) keeps the color space at 4:2:0 for less vertical banding.
But try some test footage especially with high contrast diagonal edges in the video, and especially with RED to (other) sharp edges. See what works for you and report back here...please.

  • HDV render before edit?

Just started editing HDV. I captured clips via firewire from Sony Z1U. Clips are fine. But is it typical to have the "unrendered" screen pop up when they are dragged into the timeline? Do HDV clips have to be rendered first before they can be edited or did I miss a setting somewhere?

I suspect you made the classic New Project error. You probably created a new project BEFORE changing the Easy Setup to HDV.
When you do that, the new project auto-creates a new sequence that has the properties in effect at that moment. That means the sequence is NOT HDV.
Try changing the Easy Setup to HDV 1080 FIRST, then create a new project. Then capture your HDV clips and when you edit them into the sequence, you will not have to render.
For now, though, make sure you've changed the Easy Setup to HDV 1080, create a new sequence and edit your clips into THAT sequence.
