Hdv/dv project.

I started filming a project in 16.9 on dv using a z1 (yes dv, yes I no its an hdv camera at the time I didn’t no Id be getting an edit system working with hdv!) part of the project has also been shot in 16.9 hdv using a z1. Am I best to down convert using the camera to dv and edit in dv or would I be best to capture the hdv part in hdv and the dv parts in dv and scale the hdv down in fcp?
Thanks for any advise.

the end product is going to be a sd dvd as well!!
Mr Chop,
a useful read for you:
http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/hdv_to_sddvd.html
I'd suggest you take 15sec of footage and take it all the way through the process a few times with different settings.
Read yes...but experiment by yourself too because each video even shot with popular format and settings has often a unique noise print (camera settings, lighting etc).

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 4.0-HDV 1080i-project

Do I get an improvement of a non-HDV-inputfilm if I open it as a HDV 1080i-project and finish it as an HDV 1080i-project compared with the case where I open it as a non-HDV-project?

I have recently completed 9 Export to Tape and Blu-ray Discs using Premiere Elements 4 (using the H.264 and HDV/mpeg-2 codecs) all were broadcast quality as seen on a split screen Sony 1920  x 1080 46 ". Even the non tape based Canon 5D mark II H.264 mov clips incorporated were perhaps slightly better than the Canon HDV Camcorder only because of the superior nature of the 35mm EF IS Lens used. Incidentally I use Premiere Pro to edit and go to Pro Tape but use the mt2 file generated by PP to go to blu-ray disc, it is a simpler process.there appears to be no loss of quality .

  • HDV 1080 project w/photos crashing

Got a brand new MacBook Pro and running into an issue with a HDV 1080i project.
I haven't even gotten to importing video, only working with photos imported from iPhoto. Photos range from 2MP to 8MP in size.
Problem is that whenever I make an edit that requires rendering a photo (adding a title, transition, effect, etc...) It's crapshot whether or not iMovie will crash. Most of the time it does. And when it does crash it seems o corrupt the entire project. Any further attempts to edit with a render anywhere crash the project.
I've tried DV and DV widescreen formats with no problems. Renders work and are fast. Haven't tried 720p yet.
I'm just worried if I'm having this much problems with just editing 15 photos that start of the movie project, what's gonna happen when the video portion comes (next week when I have the camera to import video.)
Has anyone come across this before? Are photos not recommended to use in 1080i projects even, and just straight 1080 video?
    Thanks in advance.

    Here's another example:
Import 3 of the exported iphoto pics.
    Dropped into timeline.
added Fade in, disolve disolve, fade out.
    Again, so far so good.
But now, I delete the 2nd disolve, to replace with, say a push transition. Delete the transition, drag drop the new one, and poof... iMovie quits.
It seems for the most part the first time around on any render is okay. But if you change something where it'll re-render a portion of the clip, that's when the trouble begins.
Again, maybe this is something with photos in 1080i projects. I'll be able to test wth video this weekend so to see how it works. But I'm really hoping to be able to mix photos and video in this project (my upcoming wedding .

  • Using 4/3 clips in a 16/9 HDV 720p project

    Hi everyone.
I am trying to make and iMovie project which combines photos and movies.
Since my TV, MacBookPro aso. are widescreen, and more or less HD, I chose a 720p widescreen format (which has to be HDV for iMovie)
    Photos look great.
Themes look great, using photos or clips.
However, I have shot all my clips in SD (and very average quality) 640*480, which is 4/3 aspect ratio.(shot with a Sanyo Xacti C5, they are MPEG 4 part 2)
When I use the clips in iMovie without themes, I have black bars on the right and left.
That is expected, but I cannot zoom and crop the top and bottom of the clips.
And I have not been able to find an iMovie plug-in that does it, and works on an Intel Mac.
I do not even know if an iMovie plug-in would be the best solution, since it seems that effects can only be applied to 10 seconds of movie at most.
I thought about exporting the bunch of clips using compressor (I have Final Cut Studio, but am not a pro do not want to get into sàmething complex this time, and I like iMovie's themes), but I have over 200 clips for 2Go, a quite small and full internal hard drive and really like the convenience of keeping the clips in iPhoto.
Any suggestions ? Thanks in advance.

How it displays on a television set depends on the playback device not the application. How are you planning on putting this on a television set?
If you edit your material in an anamorphic sequence that will give you correct widescreen material with pillarboxed 4:3 material. Or you can edit in a 4:3 sequence which will give you letterboxed widescreen material and 4:3 material that fills the screen. Which you do depends on how you are going to show this on a TV. If you're going to make a DVD for instance, the DVD player will control how the media is displayed.

  • Finishing HDV 1440 project

    Hi all.
I'm working in Final Cut 7. My project is a 79-minute documentary. 80 pct of the footage is HDV 108050i, 15 pct is SLR footage converted to pro res 108050i (we still have the original H.264 SLR footage), 5 pct miscellanous...
I started out editing in a 108050i HDV sequence, and later switched to a 108050i (i.e. 1440 X 1080) pro res sequence, which is what I am working in now.
We're finishing up the project and will soon need to make an SD DVD, Blue Ray DVD, hi res H.264 and possibly lay off to tape.
I'm looking for advice on getting the highest possible quality for these ouputs.
I'm thinking I should convert all footage to full 1920 X 1080 and also change my sequence settings to 1920 X 1080 pro res as well before finishing. Am I right to assume that this will make a difference in quality? If so, which of these options do you recommend for handling the conversion?
    1. change Final Cut sequence settings to 1920 X 1080 pro res and do a full render
    2. transcode sequence to 1920 X 1080 using Final Cut media manager
    3. transcode each clip to 1920 X 1080 in After effects and rebuild sequence in Final Cut pro res 1920 X 1080 sequence
    4. transcode a self-contained quicktime of entire movie to 1920 X 1080 pro res in After Effects, output to various formats as needed
    5. Some other option I haven't thought of
Also, does anyone know if there is a benefit for a project like this (mainly 1080i HDV footage, a few graphics, a bit of SLR footage) to converting to 422 HQ vs. regular 422?
    Thanks!

    >I'm thinking I should convert all footage to full 1920 X 1080 and also change my sequence settings to 1920 X 1080 pro res as well before finishing. Am I right to assume that this will make a difference in quality?
This will only matter with the DSLR footage that is 1920x1080. All the HDV that is 1440x1080...you won't see any difference.
    >If so, which of these options do you recommend for handling the conversion?
Don't.  Stick with 1440x1080 ProRes.  Changing the dimensions now will mess up any moves on stills, any footage repositioning...and will take a while to clean up.  Stick with 1440x1080.
Next time, use a full raster ProRes 1920x1080 sequence from the start.
    >Also, does anyone know if there is a benefit for a project like this (mainly 1080i HDV footage, a few graphics, a bit of SLR footage) to converting to 422 HQ vs. regular 422?
None. Both formats are 8-bit source.  HQ is meant for 10-bit source...even though all versions of ProRes are 10-bit.  Just use ProREs 422...you won't gain anything by using HQ...other than larger file size.

  • AUDIO LOSES SYNC ON ALL HDV IMOVIE PROJECTS

1- I have a HDV project in imovie, a wedding video about 80 minutes long
2- I "share " it in iDVD [ it burns as a SD project ]
3- It plays fine until a certain point, then the audio loses sync about 60 min. into it.
    ANY Help for this?

    Tony,
You mighty want to read through the following:
iMovie: Improving audio and video synchronization at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42974
Final Cut Pro 4: Irregular Audio Rates and A/V Sync in DV Clips at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93326 discusses why a DV clip may have an audio rate that differs slightly from the expected rate.

  • HDV imovie projects lose audio sync when burned in idvd

I have 80 min. HDV projects from imovie sent to iDVD, after burning them onto dvd they play fine then lose audio sync after about 60 min. or so.....

Painful in iDvd to do interviews when they happen to fall over the 60 minute mark, isn't it?
If it's of any consolation, it's more reliable in Apple's FCS2 / FCP => DVDSP.
Toast might be another option worth looking at....
    Good luck on this.

  • Why is sharing HDV iMovie Project back to camera not in real time?

The posting from Michel Raymond on Dec 22th, 2009 asked the question of why is the transfer of iMovie HD Project to camera so long. In his case a 50 minute iMovie Project would have taken 1300 minutes to transfer had he proceeded.
In my posting of Dec 18th I pointed that my 57 minutes 48 GB HDV Project would have taken 43 hours to archive back to camera on mini DV tape.
Bengt Warleby, in his reply on Dec 23rd to Michel Raymond's posting, said that " to copy back to camera (mini DV tape) should take same as movie duration".
So I carried out a simple check of this possibility by downloading 6 minutes of HDV original footage to make a new 6 minute 4.2 GB iMovie Project. No editing was carried. ie no voice-overs, no transitions, nothing extra at all to modify the original footage. I then shared this Project back to the same video camera from which the original footage had been downloaded.
The first stage , "Mixing Audio" was very quick, less than 1 minute.
The 2nd stage of "Encoding" TOOK 23 MINUTES!
The final stage of "Writing to tape" took 6 minutes.
SO, IT TOOK A TOTAL OF 30 MINUTES TO TRANSFER BACK A 6 MINUTE iMOVIE PROJECT TO CAMERA.
WHY? Why was further encoding required when no changes or additions had been made to the original footage? Why was it not transferred back in the same real time as it was downloaded?
HELP.! I really need to have some answers.

in iM09, choose Export using QT, and for SD choose dv-stream, HD choose QT/AppleIntermediate.. these are the only two codecs in use in iMHD6.. don't be surprised: ~13/40GBs/h ..
Is Apple considering an update to add the share to camera feature to '09 or possibly in a future version? It's a valuable tool for archiving to tape rather than DVD/HD.
speculation, esp. on future  products is not allowed as topic on this board..

  • Converting HDV FCP projects to burn standard widescreen PAL DVDs

I film and edit HDV footage from my sony hdr-hc1e on Final Cut Pro 6. I want to be able to burn PAL DVDs of my projects that will work on a normal DVD player.
In the past I have exported using quicktime conversion from FCP and used the size PAL 16:9 which gives 1024 x 576 size video files. Then my problem was these would not show up as widescreen in iDVD so i was advised to use an application 'Anamorphisizer'. That worked and i was able to make widescreen DVDs. I don't know what changes I've made but Anamorphisizer no longer works. I feel there should be a much simpler way anyway. Anyone know one?
    Thanks very much,

    Hi Ross
Just thinking but I started a PAL project
    Capture my material
In Browser - I expanded this on it's right side and far to the right I could select anamorphic. I did for each Captured sequense and the movie project.
Think that this worked after Export as QuickTime.mov
    • No QT-conversion
    • Not Selfcontained.

  • HDV PP Project YouTube... (what export format should I use?)

I've exported my HDV project to [640x480 Progressive MPEG], then uploaded to YouTube.
The video looks pretty bad on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9g808MHPmqU
The original (640x480 Progressive MPEG) located on my computer looks pretty good, the YouTube compression was pretty bad... as you can see.
Some YouTube clips look pretty good. What's the secret to uploading a video that looks good on YouTube?

  • Cannot make HDV in Project Settings

I am using Premiere CS5 and when I try to make a new project, I can only select "DV" in the capture dropdown menu. This is a problem because I want to edit HDV footage. Is there something wrong with the version I have and how do I fix it?
Also when I try to create a new sequence, I don't see any HDV options. Only the DV and DVCHD options, which I don't think will go well with my DSLR footage. Is there some preset library that I don't have for some reason?

  • HDV CS3 Project to SD Encore CS3

I have a HDV sequence I've edited in PPro CS3. I want to export the sequence to Encore CS3 in standard definition.
What is the best way to accomplish this?
Option 1: Export the HDV sequence from PPro to an uncompressed DV AVI in Widescreen format at 720 x 480 (1.2). Import that AVI into Encore and let it compress the video to MPEG-2 format. I've read about some people using this workflow - however I'm not sure if I need to de-interlace my footage. I chose to use the lower field first since I'm going to DV AVI format. Should I de-interlace if I use this option? Also I noticed some small black bars on either side of my video when I go with this option - is there a work around for that?
Option 2: Expor the HDV sequence from PPro to MPEG-2 DVD format. Will my video look better if I export right to MPEG-2 DVD format from PPro's HDV timeline?
I have researched forums on this question however I'm unable to find a definitive answer on this subject.
    Thanks
    Foochuck

Most people would find neither of your options acceptable. The absolute best method is to use Dan Isaacs' hd2sd script with AviSynth. Just search this forum and you will find a wealth of information. There is also a great tutorial on dv2film that will show you how to install the tools. Also see http://invertedhorn.axspace.com/hdv2dvd_basic.html for much of the same info.

  • How to export HDV interlaced project as progressive?

    Hello guys,
I have finished my video. It is sitting on my interlaced timeline waiting for export.
The video was shot and edited in HDV 1440 x 1080 i 60. Timeline settings are the same as video settings.
If I export it using Quick Time movie, I will end up with HDV 1440 x 1080 i 60 file with .mov file.
But how can I obtain HDV 1440 x 1080 30 progressive .mov file?

When you Export to QuickTime Movie, you don't have to use Current Settings. You can export to anything, including HDV 1080p30. However, this will merely set the field dominance of the exported movie to "None".
To get a progressive result you'll need to de-interlace your sequence with the "De-Interlace" filter. To avoid filtering every clip in your sequence, Nest your sequence first, then apply the filter to the nested sequence. Option-double-click the nested sequence to load it in the Viewer, then access the Filter tab and try the different de-interlacing options. Flicker Filter (max) gives the smoothest (but a slightly softer) result.
Finally, Export to QuickTime Movie, choosing a 1440x1080p30 preset. ProRes and HDV are your options here. However, only go back to HDV if you're:
    a) Exporting back to HDV tape
    b) Producing an HD-DVD disc with DVD Studio Pro
    c) Needing to keep a relatively small file for archiving purposes
    d) Not applying many effects or colour correction filters
If you're going to recompress or treat your sequence further, you'll probably want to export to ProRes 422 as an intermediate format. You'll probably also want to look at the Render settings under Sequence Settings and set the render codec to ProRes 422 for the same reason.
HDV native editing is great for most purposes. However, if you're colour correcting or using heavy effects (like a De-Interlace on every frame!) you can avoid recompression artifacts by rendering and exporting in ProRes.
If you really want the progressive look, try to shoot progressive in the first place. The Canon HV40 will do a great job if you're on a tight budget.

  • Advice on exporting PPCS3 HDV Project to file for WD TV player

I would like to maintain HD quality through the Export process to create a file that will be played on a Western Digital TV HD Media Player.  I have tried a multiple of export settings without success.  My goal is to play back using the WD TV player with the file stored on a USB drive...file size is not an issue.
I capture the HDV footage from a Canon HV30 camcorder into PremProCS3
I use the Project Settings preset = HDV, HDV 1080i30 (60i)
I have stabbed around with Export, Movie... as well as with the Adobe Media Encoder and can't find the magic
When I capture/edit in iMovie09 on a MacBookPro, I can easily export to a .m4v which plays back in great HD quality on my 46" TV via the WD TV player.  But I can't seem to find the right preset or custom setting within Premiere Pro to get the job done.  I greatly prefer the PP editing environment and want to stick with it.
The attached jpg file is a scan from the WD TV User Manual...supported video formats.
    Thanks, in advance.

Hey, I'm glad I found you guys.  This problem has been messing up my workflow for over a year.  Maybe you can help:
I'm shooting HDV with Sony HD1000, capturing with HDV split, editing in Premiere.  (So far, so good)  Problem is, exporting from premiere (HDV 60i project) produces "squashed" and letter-boxed video, and my graphics and titles are "mis-aligned" with the video.  It's like premiere scales down my video files, letter-boxes them, but leaves graphics untouched, which of course throws everything off.  My only work around is to edit in an NTSC project, and scale down every single video clip myself, which yields lots of rendering.  I thought I solved the problem, by importing the entire premiere project into after effects.  Export worked great, no loss of quality, but after effects doesn't recognize premiere time-remapping, titles or wipe transitions (and has issues with .m2t audio)!
I've tried every form of exporting from an hdv project  (adobe media encoder, straight to encore).  ALWAYS squashes and letter-boxes the video files, while leaving the graphics/titles as is (now appearing larger than they did in the program monitor and less crisp.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I love premiere for standard dv, I just can't get around this obstacle with HDV...

  • HDV project in CS3 refuses to make preview

Producing a set of 4 x 75 secs modules. Each require a lot of clever stuff so AFX  CS3 is required. The difference is I'm working in 1080 25i HDV instead of SD.
Imported off line edit from Prem Pro CS3 as usual and all seems fine (apart from the inordinate amout of time it takes to load up). It's when I go to do a short preview test that it all comes to a halt. On one occassion it offered a window saying something about Adobe: Dynamic Link...something or other. I forgot to make a note and that notice hasn't appeared since.
While it isn't rendering a preview, the whole thing freezes up, but after 10 minutes it unfreezes and I can work again, but not make previews.
I tried making a Movie of the same preview work area to see what happens and all is fine.
Interestingly, because of this problem I started another HDV sub-project to just make a few of the Fast Mo backgrounds. The preview worked fine with this. Might it be because I have so much footage loaded up as part of the main project?
I have 4gig RAM, Quad processors, but the project is on an out-board HDD.
    Any thoughts?

    Screenarena wrote:

A combination of circumstances, most likely. MPEG-derivatives get indexed/ conformed for use in Adobe programs, so the following things can happen:
    a) The MediaCache directories get full over time. Therefore
    b) Looking up the proper conform fiel for a clip may take very long. Plus
    c) If you did not change it, the conforms will be inside a sub-folder of your My Files folder, which as a system folder is already very busy.
Those 3 alone could already be enough. In addition, importing from Premiere would also include any conforms created there, which is the whole intention of the system, of course, but in your case may pose a disadvantage. There could be "tainted" parts from no longer valid clips and rendered snippets. So to cut a long story short: flushing the MediaCache and haven AE re-scan everything may solve the issue. I will not rule out, though, that the sheer number of clips could expose some sort of memory leak, so working with reduced project may of course be the only way out then...
