Help! Firewire vs. USB External Harddrive

People be tellin me, must get external drive to free up power and to avoid killing internal drive from many tracks frequent recording.
So i say meself, ok get a 80gb firewire 7200, but others say, you can just use a USB just as good for that purpose? are they on glue? What is the most economical way to use an external drive? thanks!
Also, because i have a firewire solo for an interface, and one firewire port on my mini, I will have good performance even tho i am going to have to daisy theM? :P

It's not necessary to get an external drive for that, but for best use it is benicifial to have the disk as empty as possible (fragmentation makes the disk slower which results in less tracks). So one option is to clean out your internal disk and move everything to an external disk. That can be either Firewire or USB, although Firewire is definitely faster.
For recording on an external disk, Firewire is the way to go. The protocol is more suited to the task than USB and delivers a higher performance. It costs a little bit more, but if you require the performance, it's worth it.
If you buy a big one (and why shouldn't you), create partitions. Use one partition for backup and the other for recording. That way you can keep the partition clean easily.

    hi,
is there a cable that i can connect my usb external harddrive to my macbook by firewire?

Unless the drive also has a Firewire port, then no. There's no such thing as USB-Firewire adaptors.

  • Firewire or USB external HD.. which is best?...

I've just lost most of the stuff on my iMac 2.4 Ghz computer. I've now got to buy an external hard drive in order to do an "automatic" back up...
I'm not a power user, but I do store a fair amount of photos. So, my problem is wether to get a USB or a Firewire 400/800 external hard drive. I know that firewire's faster than USB, but since its just "storing" why would I need a fast firewire versus a USB hard drive?
I'm at a total loss here and would appreciate any info. And yes, I've read some "horror stories" about external hard drives simply dropping dead!.. and I've also read that even the very best hard drives will eventually meet their demise!.. so now, I'm really confused as to which external hard drive to buy!.
USB is cheaper than Firewire. So, do I really need the speed of a Firewire that is "invisible" to my eye?
Again, I'd really appreciate any info. I usually buy from Amazon.com. Any help/info would be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

You might want to check these out; I currently have two and have never had a problem with either (or the older two I used to have):
    http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10033
I've also heard positive comments on the hard drives from OWC (I don't have one, but I buy all my RAM there):
    http://macsales.com/
Since any hard drive (internal or external) can (and, most likely, will at some point) fail, I have a complete clone of my system on both. Having a complete bootable backup (clone) will save a lot of time if you were to experience major problems on your Mac and/or had to have something replaced. Instead of having to start over once the problem is fixed, you can just boot off the external and clone your entire system back. I also have separate partitions on both with copies of my most important things (files, photos, etc). On top of that, I keep another copy of those important files on a DVD I burn, so even if all three hard drives were to fail, I still have my important files.
My newest LaCie hard drive has USB, eSATA, and Firewire 400 as well as 800 and I prefer using Firewire; I only use USB when there is no other choice. I've bought my hard drives from either Buy.com or Powermax.com; I don't buy from Amazon because they charge sales tax in my State.
    Hope this helps.

  • USB External HardDrive

    Hi All,
First post on this forum - go easy on me!
I've just purchased my first Mac, yesterday and getting on great with it.
One question though - I currently use 2 External HDD's to Back Up my Photographs. Currently they are connected Via USB, If I bought a Firewire lead for the HardDrive's will it run at Firewire Speed's or will it not work at all? I guess it depends if the leads are the correct size?
I look forward into hearing some replies, as I can't bear working from two HardDrives running at USB Speed!
    Best Regards,
    Simon Nicholls

Yes, as far as I know there shouldn't be any conflict as long as you're not connected using an older type keyboard with the 1.1 ports. This is the first iMac to have USB2 ports on the wired keyboard. You also have a Firewire 800 port on the back of the iMac, which needs to connect to a 1394b device to achieve 800 speeds, although it's backwards compatible with slower Firewire 400 (1394a).

  • Need help with homemade usb external hard drive

I got a usb external hard drive kit that you can put any hard drive into, and I have a 20gig western digital disk. I cant seem to get it to work on my gateway(333 mhz celeron) with windows 2000, but I am going to order a imac in 6 days. Do you think that the external hard drive would work on a newer computer like an imac? Also What jumper settings would I have to put it on? The current choices are "slave", "single or master", and "master with slave present". There are also 3 jumper settings that could be possible, but it is not labeled on the hard drive.
    thanks!

Rob, check the instructions that should have come with your drive kit, or check the manufacturer's website. Normally an IDE drive would be jumpered as 'master' or 'cable select' if it's used in a drive kit. BTW, that setting remains totally inside the drive housing, it is not visible or meaningful to the computer via the USB connection.
Whether or not your kit will work with a new iMac is hard to tell, esp. since you haven't been able to get it working so far. Have you checked to make sure whether or not you need to install a USB driver for your drive kit on your Gateway machine? (Win98 always requires USB drivers, WinXP rarely does, and I'm not sure about Win2K). For what it's worth, MACs rarely require special USB drivers.

  • HELP FIREWIRE TO USB

Hey all - I have an old external hard drive with FIRE WIRE ports only (has all my songs ) I now have the Macbook Air with USB Ports only!!! HOW DO I GET MY SONGS!!!! THANKS!!!

I have never heard of a USB to Firewire converter so I would say you have a limited set of options.
If you can easily remove the hard drive from its current enclosure you could purchase a USB to XXX adapter such as:
    http://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-USB-DSC5-3-5-Inch-Converter-Adapter/dp/B000HJ99DI/ ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312878326&sr=8-1
You could purchase an inexpensive hard disk enclosure with multiple i/o options for your current drive and mount it in that enclosure. Search amazon.com for examples.
If your MBA is a 2011 model with Thunderbolt you could wait until Sonnet releases their Thunderbolt to FW800 adaptor--rumored to be the end of September.  No pricing is available yet:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/news/nab2011/
You could also purchase a 2nd hard drive with a USB interface that has enough capacity to hold all of your data and have a friend with Firewire copy it for you.

  • Cannot open files from USB external harddrive in XP

Used this same harddrive in previous iMac OSX10.4 / Windows XP computer and it worked perfectly. Also used in computer labs for Macs and Windows at school. Never any problems. Fresh new Macbook pro and XP PRO install and while in XP the drive is visible but you cannot open a file directly from the folders in windows explorer. You can however drag a file to the desktop and it will open it there. There is something in the file path which XP / bootcamp is not liking? Files open perfectly from my XP on my HP. Ideas?

Went into administrative/disk management and poked around. Just changed drive letters and all is OK. Thanks anyway.

  • Need Audio Help - USB External Speakers

    This should be fun!
Need Audio Help!  My USB external speakers are recognized in Garage Band Preferences, but NOT in System Preferences. (I use the audio interface, US-144 Tascam)
    Which means:
I can only play my speakers using Garage band and not iTunes.
They were working in both iTunes and GB many times before.
I see that others have had problems losing their external speakers after updating their iMac.
I've called Apple for assistance (no help)
    Changed the order of connections
    I've shut down again, again...
    Help please

Open System Preferences/Sound and select the USB Speakers as your Output device
If that doesn't do as you expect, or you need to tweak them, run Utilities/Audio MIDI Setup and select them there then adjust the Format and Volume etc.

  • External Harddrive HELP

    Hello Apple community,
I recently purcased a Macbook with 120 harddrive, and yes I'm an idiot. I'm doing alot of editing and suprise surprise have run out of room. I was wondering what would be the cheapest and best option in regards to a 1 terabyte external harddrive? Furthermore, does this act as extra harddrive space, or like a USB key so to speak. what I mean is, say if I need 50 Gb of video data off the external hard drive, will it take hours to transfer it from the external harddrive onto my macbook?
    Anyone got any answers?

well there is a plethora of options for you.
just use as back up, or storage, or as a bootable disk, each has their own up and down sides. now on a macbook the fastest way to access the external drive will b via the firewire port.
i use mine to store my music files which will be extremely smaller than your video ones. when i want to use a file i transfer it to my mac (sometimes my imac and sometimes my macbook). this i find is the fastest way to work. also if while working i kill the file i know the original is still on the external so its no too bad.. transferring files back and forth is a pain but it helps as back up too. i try and keep all other file types off my macbooks hard drive (pics mp3 videos "these get stored on the external drive") so that there is plenty of space on it for my work.
50 gig will take about an hour to transfer to your hard drive working from the external drive will slow you down. its normally faster working on files that are on your internal drive thats y i transfer to there.
you can setup programs to read files from an external drive to use but if you are using alot of different files at once the transfer speeds may not keep up and your system will slow down.
    hope this helps

  • How to connect an external harddrive with firewire 800 to a macbook with firewire 400?

    Hello,
I just got the external harddrive "Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex USB 3.0 1TB" with a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Upgrade Kabel FireWire 800. I have neither a USB 3.0, nor a Firewire 800 on my white macbook (2008). I already know, that it's possible to use USB 3.0 with an USB 2.0 port, but I would like to use it with the firewire to spare the USB port for other devices. My question: Is there an adapter or cable to use the Seagate Firewire 800 with my Firewire 400 port? I don't know, where and what to look for.
    I'm glad for any advice.

There are many adaptors, try here

Have you tried resetting the BIOS to defaults? See if that works.
If not, try updating the BIOS.

  • E3000 shows "USB is not supported" error with External Harddrive

I have the E3000 router and recently purchased a USB WD (Western Digital) 2TB External Harddrive.  I plug the Harddrive into the router, open the router homepage (http://192.168.1.1/) then click on Storage > Disk and I get a "The attached USB is not supported" error - any suggestions on how to fix this?
    Thanks for any help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Likely Final Update:  WD Support sent me a link to download / install SmartWare and solve the problem I was having with the SmartWare software ("Drive Settings" was greyed out).  Once I got SmartWare back up and running I was able to change the "Drive Settings" within SmartWare.  As the last update suggested, I modified the sleep timer settings and security (password settings) and tested to get the following results:
Sleep Timer on / Password protection on:  E3000 shows "USB not supported"
Sleep Timer off / Password protection on:  E3000 shows "USB not supported"
Sleep Timer on / Password protection off:  WD Hard Drive seen and seems to function properly when connected to E3000
Sleep Timer off / Password protection off:  WD Hard Drive seen and seems to function properly when connected to E3000
So (other than maybe some inital problems with the WD SmartWare) it appears the "USB is not supported" error is due to the Password protection being turned on for the External Hard Drive.  This point should be highlighted in the Western Hard Drive materials but I don't see it anywhere on the box or in the manual (maybe its fine print in the manual).  Cisco and / or Western Digital are screwing us by not allowing password protection (or making this point known) on at this least model of Hard Drive!
Thanks again to everyone that helped with troubleshooting this!

  • USB external hardrive (should i get firewire instead)

    Hey all,
I have just bought a 150Gb USB external hgard drive because my imac G5 is a bit full and also it was a bargain. my question is this-can you change the USB cable into a fireweire cable? As in, there is a USB port on the external hard drive where you run a standard USB cable to the compute. Is it possible to buy a firewire cable thats fits into this slot and goes into the firewire slot on the mac? if not should i take this USB hard drive back and wait to see if i can get a firewire external drive? is there that much of a difference? i will be using it for movies, photos and music only, I'm worried about the speed thats all.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Tommy

Tommy, I think you should take the drive back and get a firewire one. First of all, you can't turn a usb drive into anything else, second, if you ever want to (and you should) back up and clone your system so that you can boot of it, you need firewire, usb will not work. Get hold of SuperDuper! and use it to clone and make regular scheduled backups. Try and get the largest drive you can afford, then you can partition the drive and use one part as a clone and the other as a scratch disk.
Let us kniw what you decide,

  • Slow data transfer to USB External Drive - Help

I'm running the WD MyBook Essential 160GB via 2.0 on an iMac FlatPanel 1GHz running OSX 10.4.7.
    Questions:
    1. I want to both (a) back-up my 80GB HD for on a regular basis in case of emergencies and also off-load media files (Mainly movies/photos) I may want to access later but don't want on my internal drive taking up space. Is there any recommended software that will do both? Do I need to partition the external drive to do this, i.e. one side for the back-up and one side for media file storage?
    2. I stupidly bought the USB2.0 version of MyBook when I should have got the FW. Is there a way to make transfers faster? The transfer rate is unbelievably slow. Is there any reason that transfer of 10G would take almost all night?
    Thanks for any help.

Assuming the internal drive of your USB case is Parallel IDE/ATA, this is all you need at $46 + shipping:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/MacAlly/PHR100AF/
If it is SATA, this is what you'd need, at $60 + shipping:
    http://www.cooldrives.com/combo-sata-drive-enclosure-firewire-and-usb.html
To tell the difference between SATA and Parallel IDE see these images of the back of the hard drive which I got off the Newegg store website for SATA (images are reduced for typical web browser page size, but still show the importance of the difference between the ports): and Parallel IDE .
I might add some SATA hard drives have the 4 pin power connector you see on the right of Parallel IDE drives in addition to the standard SATA power connector. Don't let this confuse you.
