Help me prevent restarting my RMI server

I choose the RMI framework because I thought that this would support dynamic loading of classes. Now I'm beginning to doubt this feature, hope someone can fill in the blanks for me.
The clients are built using Java Web Start. I use RMI for authentication and transactions (application events, files, etc.). The interfaces I use in RMI are very loose, they take an Object as parameter and returns an Object. I wrote it that way because I didn't know what functionality I would need in the future.
Main problem: Compatibility issues when I rewrite classes on the client side....:
java.rmi.ServerException: RemoteException occurred in server thread; nested exception is:
     java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling arguments; nested exception is:
     java.io.InvalidClassException: jflex.rmi.RMIPostEvents; local class incompatible: stream classdesc serialVersionUID = 7574722854925780076, local class serialVersionUID = 8717205828862885031
     at sun.rmi.server.UnicastServerRef.dispatch(Unknown Source)
yadayadayadayada.....
How can get the RMI server to reload the client classes when this exception occurs? If I have to restart the RMI server everytime I modify RMI classes on the client the RMI technique is useless to me.
Thanks in advance.

OK, now I understand, and this is an interesting problem.
I would have expected RMI to have annotated all remotely loaded codebase namespaces with a session id, to prevent this type of thing from happening. Not good. Unfortunately this issue is in the 'deep-water' of RMI internal implementation. The only expert on this I know on this forum is ejp. If you're reading this Esmond, little help here, please!
It would seem that you are forced to also change the name of the implementation class of the JFlexServerTask implementation, or derive from it, a bit of a hassle for sure. Does the server hold persistent references to the loaded tasks? If not, the classes might be unloaded when the DGC runs, but again I am not sure of this. Also, you can never be sure when DGC will run. Otherwise it seems like over the long term, the server runtime could get pretty congested with unused classes.
I guess I have not run into this problem before since I generally I do not allow servers to accept code from clients. The reason being that if there is an error in the client implementation, it can easily crash the server, accidentally or intentionally. Authentication I generally handle by sending the client a random value, which it then hashes with its password. (SHA or MD5 are good) Your present scheme could be easily cracked, unless you are running RMI over SSL, since your authentication object would be sent in plaintext over the network.
However, I am guessing you want to send batch jobs to a server, on a highly trusted network. I'm not sure how to resolve the problem, this stumps me, and I have been doing this for a long time :-)

    I am making a client server application in java /rmi
    I have four clients forming a group on theserver and all of them have some state . Now if one of the mlogs off
    I will get a remoteexception on the server . I would like to allow another user to log in in place of the this chap who logged off and continue from the last state of the object.
    any clues?
    even if I save the state of the object(some datastructures) when I first get an remoteexception ,

  • Need Help to Prevent DDOS at application layer to protect Web server ?

    Please guide the solutions for DDOS attack. I am facing this attack and after some investigation I  found some details what is up against me
    Here are some details of the attack which is most similar in my situation.
    In considering the ramifications of a slow denial of service attack  against particular services, rather than flooding networks, a concept  emerged that would allow a single machine to take down another machine's  web server with minimal bandwidth and side effects on unrelated  services and ports.  The ideal situation for many denial of service  attacks is where all other services remain intact but the webserver  itself is completely inaccessible.  Slowloris was born from this  concept, and is therefore relatively very stealthy compared to most  flooding tools.
    Slowloris holds connections open by sending partial HTTP requests.   It continues to send subsequent headers at regular intervals to keep the  sockets from closing.  In this way webservers can be quickly tied up.   In particular, servers that have threading will tend to be vulnerable,  by virtue of the fact that they attempt to limit the amount of threading  they'll allow.  Slowloris must wait for all the sockets to become  available before it's successful at consuming them, so if it's a high  traffic website, it may take a while for the site to free up it's  sockets.  So while you may be unable to see the website from your  vantage point, others may still be able to see it until all sockets are  freed by them and consumed by Slowloris.  This is because other users of  the system must finish their requests before the sockets become  available for Slowloris to consume.  If others re-initiate their  connections in that brief time-period they'll still be able to see the  site.  So it's a bit of a race condition, but one that Slowloris will  eventually always win - and sooner than later.
    Slowloris also has a few stealth features built into it.  Firstly, it  can be changed to send different host headers, if your target is a  virtual host and logs are stored seperately per virtual host.  But most  importantly, while the attack is underway, the log file won't be written  until the request is completed.  So you can keep a server down for  minutes at a time without a single log file entry showing up to warn  someone who might watching in that instant.  Of course once your attack  stops or once the session gets shut down there will be several hundred  400 errors in the web server logs.  That's unavoidable as Slowloris sits  today, although it may be possible to turn them into 200 OK messages  instead by completing a valid request, but Slowloris doesn't yet do  that.
    Please suggest any solutions with product that can help to prevent this problem with some guidance of the feature of that product to specifically prevent this type of attack. I already a many cisco devices like ASA, IPS, Cisco guard etc. just need some guidance
    An early response requested and it will be highly appreciated.

    Hello Haseen
    Any tool will have some sort of trend/chracterstic that can be used to filter or throttle it out. Take skype for an example; even with all its complexity vendors managed to find days to detect it on the network and take corrective actions. However its always a catch-up game, developers continually work to make their applications or protocols more stealthy and the vendors have to keep up with this challenge.
    So you would need to understand this trend/chracterstic of the attack, and then filter out using an access control mechanism, IMHO the most appropriate would be a web application firewall (WAF), Cisco used to have one but I think it is EOS soon:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps9586/index.html
    F5 Networks have their ASM module:
    http://www.f5.com/products/big-ip/application-security-manager.html
    Other vendors also have some good tools.
    Please rate if you find the applications helpful.
    Regards
    Farrukh

    I can access naming enumeration of registry and object bound to it.
    by following program.I shows corect objects.
    Context namingContext=new InitialContext();
    NamingEnumeration<NameClassPair> e=namingContext.list("rmi:");
    while(e.hasMore())
    System.out.println(e.next().getName());
    While when i start RMI server from simple java program i can access these objects from registry.
    I am not getting what is problem problem.Is there any other way to send request?

  • RMI Server issuing commands to clients - help please

    I am trying to setup 2 clients to respond when an RMI server sends them a message, however I have never done any distributed programming before.
    Can anyone please post up some classes which show how to have a client listening and a server connecting to them in order to activate a method. I would be extremely grateful. If anyone knows of a web site or another similar resource with an example like this that would also be much appreciated...
    Many thanks,
    drawdE

    Earlier responses pointed out something important:
    when it comes to real communications, the roles of
    client and server are frequently switched.Yes, but CONCEPTUALLY.
    What you mean to say really, is that a process can be ASKED for some resource (then it would be acting like a "server") or it can ASK for a resource (it would be acting like a "client"). Please note that i said it ACTS like something. It is not the same thing as it REALLY BEING that thing substantially. What i'm driving at is that when you design an app, objects that make it up take dual roles at THAT LEVEL of their own operation, but universally (when you look at the ENTIRE app), things cannot switch around like that anytime they want. An RMI Server is just that: A server. Clients connect to it, and there's no reason for the server to want to connect to a client of its own volition. When you start doing that, you're messing around with WHAT IT MEANS to implement client/server arch.....For instance, the objects that make up of that talk to bound remote objects on the server, CAN act out this dual role: but not when you have a bird's eye view of the entire app.
    Its bad design. Its bad practise.
    >
    At the "architectural" level - something I admit is
    vague - I suggest that in the application described by
    the original poster, the only distinctions between
    client and server are
    o There are multiple clients but only one server.What the original post doesnt seem to get is that there would be as many clients as servers if he succeeds.
    o A client can register with a server for on-going
    communications, In everything else i would agree, but not in RMI: its nature just forbids it, because it means implementing what is in the server-side......on the client-side, just so the client can be TALKED TO by the "one server", as you put it.
    but not the reverse.
    >
    This last point is key to server-initiated
    communications (using RMI). When a client registers
    with a server, it passes a reference to an object that
    extends Remote. The server holds onto this reference,
    and when it has something to say to the clientlike what? RMI isnt built that way! the client talks to the server. End of story.
    , then
    the server calls a method of that remote objectimplying another server on the client-side!!! doesnt make sense at all.
    >
    Finally, It bears repeating in this forum: With RMI,
    such "callbacks" will not work if the clients are
    behind firewalls.Correct, but irrelevant: firewalls or no firewalls, WHY are you trying to do it in the first place?
    It also bears repeating in this forum: RMI is client/server architecture in practice, but its the NATURE of RMI that forbids it from being used the way ANY OTHER C/S architecture out there is flexible.

  • Problem with lost of the access to the RMI server

    Hi to all.
    We have two applications. First one (master) provides to second (slave) through RMI service their data or other resources.
    In the ordinary way all works fine. But if we need for some reason restart master application, slave can't access to the RMI service and calling of the method Naming.lookup(...) throws java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is: java.io.EOFException
    Interestingly, calling of method Namig.list(...) at this moment correctly returns an array of the names bound in the registry.
    For completeness, in the time of restarting master application, classes of the RMI services are not changed and thus Stub/Skeleton classes are same on both sides.
    What is reason for this behaviour? It is way to restart/restore RMI access of the slave application to the master without restarting server (Tomcat) of both applications?
    Thank, Roman

    Thank for your reply, but your suggestion not helped me now.
    For registering and binding I used usual practices. Following snippets of code are inside method that perform initialization on application startup. I was trying three versions.
    First version creates registry and binds service classes only. Without any checks.
    try {
      LocateRegistry.createRegistry(rmiPort);
      String ip = Functions.getCurrentEnvironmentNetworkIp();
      if (ip.startsWith("?"))
        throw new Exception("Can't retrieve application IP address.");
      logger.info("Application IP address: " + ip);+
      RMIServiceCommonImpl rmiServiceCommon = new RMIServiceCommonImpl();
      String name = "rmi://" + ip + ":" + rmiPort + "/";
      Naming.rebind(name + IRMIServiceCommon.RMI_SERVICE_COMMON_NAME, rmiServiceCommon);
    catch (Exception e) {
      logger.error("Failed to register RMI services: ", e);
    }On first application start all is OK and client has no problem to access RMI service.
    But if master application is restarted, calling of the method LocateRegistry.createRegistry(rmiPort); throws
    java.rmi.server.ExportException: internal error: ObjID already in use
    Since that, client can't access to the RMI service and following code (method Naming.lookup) throws
    java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is: java.io.EOFException
      String name = "rmi://" + ConfigServlet.getProperty("rmiHostUrl") + "/";
      IRMIServiceCommon service = (IRMIServiceCommon) Naming.lookup(name + IRMIServiceCommon.RMI_SERVICE_COMMON_NAME);Second version checks if registry exist and trying to get list of registered services. If services not exist Register is created.
    try {
      Registry reg = LocateRegistry.getRegistry(rmiPort);
      String[] list = null;
      try {
        list = reg.list();
      catch (Exception ex) {
        // ignore
      if (list == null || list.length == 0)
        LocateRegistry.createRegistry(rmiPort);
      String ip = Functions.getCurrentEnvironmentNetworkIp();
      if (ip.startsWith("?"))
        throw new Exception("Can't retrieve application IP address.");
      logger.info("Application IP address: " + ip);
      String name = "rmi://" + ip + ":" + rmiPort + "/";
      RMIServiceCommonImpl rmiServiceCommon = new RMIServiceCommonImpl();
      Naming.rebind(name + IRMIServiceCommon.RMI_SERVICE_COMMON_NAME, rmiServiceCommon);
    catch (Exception e) {
      logger.error("Failed to registering RMI services: ", e);
    }Again, first start is OK.
    In this case, after application restart, calling of method Naming.rebind() throws
    java.lang.IllegalStateException at org.apache.catalina.loader.WebappClassLoader.loadClass(WebappClassLoader.java:1272)
    INFO: Illegal access: this web application instance has been stopped already. Could not load eu.arachne.rmi.RMIServiceCommonImpl_Stub.
    This exception is followed by similar exceptions, but differs in class names (stubs) - java.rmi.server.RemoteStub, java.rmi.server.RemoteObject, java.rmi.dgc.Lease, java.rmi.dgc.VMID, java.rmi.server.UID
    Of course, client application can't access to the service.
    The third version first unbinds all services and then performs binding again.
    if (list == null || list.length == 0)
      LocateRegistry.createRegistry(rmiPort);
    else {
      for (int ii = 0; ii < list.length; ii++)
        Naming.unbind(name + list[ii]);
    }But again, rebinding fail as I mentioning above.
    I don't know... :-( How I can solve this problem?
    Thank, Roman

  • Detect & re-register in Rmi Server

    Hi,
    I am running rmi registry in separate console. My application is registering an URL in RMI server. Now I am stopping rmi registry & restarting it again.
    Now rmi registry is a new process & all previous registration entries are gone. So my application has to re-register.
    How my application can detect that rmi server is stopped & restarted so that I can re-register it again?
    Any help?
    Here is my code where I am registering
    public void initializeExternalManagementInterface(String serviceURL)
    mbeanServer = MBeanServerFactory.createMBeanServer();
    String domain = m_mbeanServer.getDefaultDomain();
    String mbeanObjectNameStr = domain + ":type=" + EXTERNAL_MBEAN_CLASS_NAME + ",index=1";
    objectName = ObjectName.getInstance(mbeanObjectNameStr);
    Attribute serviceURLAttribute = new Attribute("ServiceURL", serviceURL);
    m_mbeanServer.setAttribute(m_mbeanObjectName, serviceURLAttribute);
    public void startManagementInterface(String jmxServiceURL, String mbeanClassName)
    env.put(RMIConnectorServer.JNDI_REBIND_ATTRIBUTE,"true");
    JMXServiceURL p_jmxServiceURL = new JMXServiceURL(jmxServiceURL);
    LoggerManager.getLogger().info("Starting JMX Server: " + p_jmxServiceURL);
    m_mbeanServerConnector = JMXConnectorServerFactory.newJMXConnectorServer(p_jmxServiceURL, env, m_mbeanServer);
    m_mbeanServerConnector.start();
    LoggerManager.getLogger().info("THE MANAGEMENT INTERFACE STARTED FOR SERVICE URL :" + jmxServiceURL);
    m_jmxConnector = JMXConnectorFactory.connect(p_jmxServiceURL, null);
    m_mbeanConnection = m_jmxConnector.getMBeanServerConnection();
    String domain = m_mbeanConnection.getDefaultDomain();
    m_mbeanObjectName = new ObjectName(domain + ":type=" + mbeanClassName + ",index=1");
    }

    Hi,
    My application has a Watchdog process. It monitors few managed & unmanaged processes. If any process goes down due to some reason then it is responsibility of watchdog to restart it again.
    Rmi registry is one of the unmanaged process for watchdog. So if Rmi stops or killed due to some reason then Watchdog restarts it successfully but the problem is my application has to re register again.
    I want to know how my application can find out that Rmi registry is restarted so lets register again.
    Note: Watchdog process has no way to communicate my application that rmi is restarted so my application has to care it self.
    Suggest me if you have any solution.
    Thanks & regards,
    Jack

    what do you mean by intranet address?
    If you use some NAT device (e.g, DSL, cable) that it is likely you won't be able to access the registry using the external IP address. In such case you need to open the registry port in the firewall.

    Do you have any application which is deployed your manage server? If you say Yes:
    There are three ways:
    1)If Sun JVM is used, then add:
    set MEM_ARGS=-Xms1280m -Xmx1280m -XX:PermSize=128m -XX:MaxPermSize=256m
    *** -XX:PermSize and -XX:MaxPermSize should be equal and quarter of -Xmx. (-Xmx should also be equal to -Xms)
    If BEA JRockit JVM is used, then add:
    set MEM_ARGS=-Xms1280m -Xmx1280m
    2) If you still get that error, increase your real memory of system.
    3) For last choice, contact with your developer to tune your application.
